Introduction
Thankyouforpurchasinga JBLCabaretSeriessystem.This
manualhasbeenpreparedtohelpyouachievemaximum
performancefromyoursystem.If,afterreadingthismanual,
somequestionsareleftunanswered,consultyourlocalJBL
dealer.Hehastheknowledgerequiredtoprovideexpert
adviceandassistance.Ifheisunabletoassistyou,write
directlytoApplicationsEngineering,ProfessionalDivision,
JBL.
ProtectiveCover
EachCabaretSeriessystemisequippedwitha sturdyflush-
fittingcover.Itisdesignedtoprotectthesystem'sspeakers
andgrillefromshippingdamageandindirectmoisture.With
thisinmind,eachcoverhasbeensizedtoprovidean
extremelytightfit.
Toremovethecover,graspthetophandleandpullsharply
towardsyourself.Oncetheuppersnap-fitfastenershave
beenreleased,peelthecoverdownwardstoreleasethe
lowerfasteners.Ifmorethanonesystemisused,thecovers
maybeattachedtoeachotherforstorage.
Toreinstallthecover,placeitoverthegrilleandapplyfirm
pressureintheareaofeachfastener.Donotuseexcessive
forceasthismaydamagethefasteners.
SpeakerPlacement
Underidealconditionsspeakerplacementmaybecalculated
precisely.Unfortunately,youseldomperformunderideal
conditions.Instead,you'refacedwitha seriesoftinystages
andacousticallyimpossiblerooms.Itisdifficulttoestablish
firmspeakerplacementrules,butwecansuggestsome
generalguidelinesthatwillhelpyougetthebestpossible
soundfromeachsystemina varietyofenvironments.
4602Monitor
The4602isdesignedtobeanextremelyflexiblesystem
thatcanfunctionina numberofapplications.Itcanbeused
asa stagemonitor,acousticguitarspeakersystem,orsmall
vocalreinforcementsystem.Naturally,eachapplicationwill
callfora differentspeakerposition.
Whenthe4602isusedasa s'tagemonitoritshouldbe
placedonthefloorandaimedupwardsateithera 30or60
degreeangledependingonyourdistancefromthespeaker.
Optimumfloorlocationwillbedirectlyinfrontofyouwith
thespeaker'ssoundenergyfocusedtowardstherearofyour
microphoneasshowninFigureLThiswillprovideanideal
balancebetweensoundlevelandsystemfeedbackrejection.
Ifthisplacementisnotpossible(asinthecaseofa drummer
orkeyboardplayer),thespeakershouldbeplacedtothe
sideandkeptasfarforwardaspossible.Thespeakershould
neverbeplacedbehindyouorinanypositionwhereitwould
beaimedintothemicrophone'spickuppatternasthismay
causeseverefeedbackproblems.

Foruseasanacousticguitarsystem,the4602shouldbe
placedinanuprightpositionandaimedatyouraudience's
earlevel.Ifyouintendtousea microphonewithyourguitar,
avoidplacingthespeakerbehindthemicrophone.Thiswill
helpeliminatefeedbackproblems.
Ifthe4602istobeusedasthemainhousesoundsystem,
atleastonespeakershouldbeplacedateachfrontcorner
ofthestage.Speakersshouldbeplaceduprightandkeptas
farforwardaspossibletominimizefeedback.Elevatingthe
speakersashighaspossiblewithsturdytables,scaffolding,
orspeciallydesignedspeakerstandswillhelpensurecom-
pleteroomcoverage.Ifa speakerstandistobeused,the
speakershouldbeturnedonitssideandthestandshould
bemountedatthespeaker'scenterofgravityasshownin
Figure2.Onlystandsdesignedforspeakersupportshould
beused.

4622LeadGuitar
The4622isdesignedforusewithelectricguitarsandmay
beusedineitherahorizontalorverticalposition.Thespeaker's
performancewillbeenhancedifitisslightlyelevated.This
willminimizehighfrequencyabsorptionandobstructionand
allowyoutomonitoryourperformancelevels.
Iftwo4622saretobeused,theymaybestackedeither
horizontallyorverticallyusingtheenclosure'sspecial
interlockingcorners.Verticalstacking,itshouldbenoted,will
producea columneffect(anarrowingofverticaldispersion
andimprovedhorizontaldispersion]andshouldonlybe
usedwhensucha dispersionpatternisdesired.
4680LineArray
The4680isa linearrayloudspeakersystemengineered
forsoundreinforcement.Undermostconditions,thebest
performancelevelswillbeobtainedwhenthespeakersare
locatedatthefrontcornersofthestage.Speakersshouldbe
placedasfarforwardaspossibletominimizefeedback.
Ifseveralspeakersystemsareusedina single-channel
installation,andtheyareplacedmorethan20feetapart,
theyshouldbearrangedsotheircoveragepatternsoverlap
aslittleaspossibleforbestresults.
Aswithalllinearrays,the4680willexhibitcontrolledvertical
sounddispersionandwidehorizontaldispersionwhenthe
speakerissetupsothatthelongerdimensionisvertical.This
typeofdispersionpattern(calleda columneffect]iscaused
bythelinearrelationshipofthedriverswithinthesystem.In
mostcases,thiskindofpatternwillenableyoutoobtain
completecoverageoftheaudienceareawhileminimizing
unwantedsoundreflections.
Shouldtheenclosureberotated90degreesforhorizontal
placement,however,thedispersionpatternwillalsoberotated
90degrees.Theresultantpatternwillbeextremelywidein
theverticalplaneandnarrowinthehorizontal.Thispattern
isfarfromidealformostapplications.Horizontalplacement,
therefore,isnotgenerallyrecommended.
Undersomeconditions,permanentinstallationofthe4680
(orotherCabaretSeriesSystems]maybedesirable.For
theseapplicationsthespeakersmaybesuspendedbycable,
chain,
orrope.Itisadvisabletousetwoormoresuspension
linesattachedtoseparatepointsforstabilityandsafety.
Tobeginpermanentinstallation,removethetop250mm
speakerfromthe4680enclosure.Nextdrilltwoormore
holesinthetopand/orsidesoftheenclosureandinserthigh-
strength
1/4-20
[orlarger)eyebolts.Washersshouldbe
usedbothinsideandoutsidetopreventtheboltsfrompulling
free.
Afterallboltsaresecure,replacethetopspeaker.The
enclosureisnowreadyforsuspension.

NameplateReorientation
TheJBLnameplateonanyCabaretSeriessystemmaybe
reorientedtoreadcorrectlywhentheenclosureisinverted
orplacedhorizontally.Firstremovethespeakergrilleby
looseningthescrewsfoundinthecenterofeachsnap-fit
coverfastener.Oncethescrewsareloose,gentlylifttheg rille
freeoftheenclosure.Next,takeoutthescrewholdingthe
nameplateandbackingplatetogether,removethenameplate
andreplaceitintheproperposition.Notethatthebacking
andnameplatearekeyedat90-degreeintervals,andthat
thebackingplatehasa keyingridgewhichmatchesa groove
onthegrilleframe.SeeFigure4.Reinstallthescrewwithout
overtightening,andreplacethegrille.
RoadHandles
EachCabaretSeriesenclosureisequippedwithflush-
mountedprofessionalroadhandles.Topreventunwanted
handlevibrationandnoiseduringyourperformance,the
han-
dlesshouldbelockedinplaceonceinitialsetupiscompleted.
Thismaybedonebypressingthehandlesfirmlyintotheen-
closurerecess.Toreleasethehandles,pullsharplyoutwards.
SystemConnection
InputtoeachCabaretSeriessystemisthroughthe6 mm
[}A
inch)phonejacklabeled"Input"locatedontherecessed
terminalplateattherearoftheenclosure.A positivevoltage
appliedtothetipofthephoneplugwillcausetheloudspeaker
conestomoveforward.Additionalloudspeakersystemscan
beconnectedtoanyCabaretsystembyusingthe6 mm
(1/4
inch)phonejacklabeled"ExternalSpeakerOut'.'The
systemswillbewiredinparallel,socareshouldbetakento
ensurethatthetotalimpedanceiscompatiblewiththeampli-
fier'sminimumloadrequirements.
Iftheamplifierisinadvertentlyconnectedtotheoutputjack,
andadditionalsystemsarenotconnectedtotheinputjack,
thesystemwillnotoperateandtheamplifierwillnotbe
terminated.Thisisbecause,unlikeothersystems,the
loud-
speakervoicecoilsareshortedwhennoplugisinsertedin
theinputjack.Thishelpspreventspeakerdamageduring
shipmentbyrestrictingconemovement.
Wheneverplugsarenotinserted,thesnapcoversonthe
jackswillspringclosedtomaintaintheacousticalcharac-
teristicsoftheenclosureandtoprotecttheinteriorofthe
enclosurefrommoistureduringshipmentandstorage.
Therearterminalplatemayberemovedfromtheenclosure
andmodifiedfortheinstallationofalternateconnectors.
Forinputcableconnections,1.3mm(16-gauge)insulated
wireistheminimumsizerecommendedforconnectionsup
to15m [50ft).Heaviergaugewireisrecommendedfor
greaterdistances;1.6mm[14-gauge)from15m (50ft)to
30m [100ft)and2 mm(12-gauge)from30m [100ft)to
60m (200ft).
Important: When connecting or disconnecting loudspeakers
from an amplifier, the amplifier power must be turned off.
Making connections while the amplifier is operating could
seriously damage the loudspeaker system and void
the warranty.
SystemAdjustment
Boththe4602Monitorandthe4680LineArrayfeature
speciallydesigneddividingnetworks.Crossoverpointfor
eachsystemis3 kHz.Foreaseofadjustmentbothsystems
providea highfrequencyattenuationcontrolthatextends
throughthegrille.Highfrequencybalanceadjustmentscan
bemadefromthefrontofthesystemwithoutremovingthe
grillefromtheenclosure.
Toadjustthesystem,usea coinora large-bladescrewdriver
toturntheattenuationcontrol.Maximumattenuationwillbe
obtainedwhenthecontrolisturnedfullycounterclockwise.

PowerCapacity
Liveperformanceconditionscanplaceincredibledemands
oneventhebestmusicalsoundsystems.Highpowerlevels,
useofcontrolleddistortion,wideinstrumentaldynamic
range,
andexplosivetransientscontinuouslychallengea
system'sreliability.
Becausetheseconditionsaresosevere,wepreferthe
"ContinuousSineWave"methodofratingthepowercapacity
ofJBLsoundsystems.Thislaboratorystandardtestisfar
moredemandingthanactualperformancesituationsand
providesa crediblemeasureofa systemspowercapacity.
Sincea numberofmanufacturerscontinuetousetheless
stringent"ContinuousProgramPower"rating,wehave
includedthesefiguresforyourreference.
Whenmakinganamplifierselectionyoushouldbeaware
ofthefactthata severelydistortedsignalcanplaceveryhigh
demandsona speaker.Infact,undersomeconditionsa
distorted75wattsignalmaydamagea speakermoreeasily
thananundistorted150wattsignal.Becauseofthis,amplifier
distortionlevelsmustbetakenintoconsiderationwhen
youselectanamplifierforusewitha Cabaretsystem.In
applicationswherehighdistortionisexpected[suchasa
guitarsystem)itisbesttouseonlythoseamplifierswhose
ratingsfallwellwithinthespeakersystem's"ContinuousSine
Wave"
powercapacity.
ComponentRemoval
EachCabaretSeriessystemissuppliedwithallcomponents
installed,
wired,andtested.Accesstothecomponentsshould
notberequiredundernormalusage.Ifaccessisneeded,
notethattheenclosureisfilledwithfiberglass,whichcanbe
irritatingtothe
skin.
Itisrecommendedthatlongsleeves
andglovesbewornforprotectionwhenworkingincontact
withthefiberglass.
Toremovethecomponents,theenclosureshouldbeplaced
onitsback.Thegrilleshouldthenberemovedasdescribed
underthesectionofthismanualconcerningnameplate
reorientation.Allconespeakersaremountedfromthefront
ofthebaffleboardwithmachinescrewsthreadedintoT-nuts
ontherearoftheboard.Highfrequencydriversaremounted
fromtherearofthebaffleboardwithmachinescrews
threadedintotappedholesinthemountingflangesofthe
drivers.Whenremovingthescrews,donotapplypressure
whichmightdislodgetheT-nuts.Notethecolorcodingofthe
wiringcarefullybeforeremovingthewiresfromthetrans-
ducerssothattheymaybeproperlyconnectedwhen
reassemblingthesystem.
Thedividingnetworkinthe4680ismountedontherear
ofthebaffleboardwithmachinescrewsgoingthroughthe
boardintofastenersonthenetwork.Accesstothenetwork
isgainedbyremovingthetransducerclosesttothehigh
frequencyassembly.
Thedividingnetworkinthe4602ismountedina similar
mannerbutismountedontwoboards:oneontherear
ofthebaffleboardandonelocatedonthesideoftheen-
closure.Accesstothenetworkisgainedbyremovingthe
conetransducer.
Replacementofthesystemcomponentsisdonebyreversing
theremovalprocedure.Mountingscrewsforalldevices
shouldbetightenedevenlyandjustenoughtopreventair
leaks.
EnclosureMaintenance
TheCabaretSeriesenclosuresarefinishedinanunusually
durableblackpolyurethanematerial.Simplecleaningcanbe
accomplishedwitha dampcloth.Ifadditionallustreisdesired,
treatmentwitha silicone-basedproductisrecommended.
Whiletheenclosure'snylongrilleshouldnotrequireany
regularmaintenance,itmaybecleanedbygentlydustingit
witha vacuumcleaner.
JBLcontinuallyengagesinresearchrelatedtoproductimprovement.New
materials,productionmethods,anddesignrefinementsareintroducedinto
existingproductswithoutnoticeasa routineexpressionofthatphilosophy.For
thisreason,anycurrentJBLproductmaydifferinsomerespectfromits
publisheddescriptionbutwillalwaysequalorexceedtheoriginaldesign
specificationsunlessotherwisestated
