2Notes on Instrument Safety
The VARIOSCAN high resolution is a high-guality, carefully calibrated
instrument. The casing of the camera head may be opened only by our
service or other authorised persons. Unauthorised tampering with the
equipment will forfeit any rights to claim under warranty.
The use of accessories or spares on the VARIOSCAN high resolution

Optik, Systeme GmbH may result in malfunction or damages. The
manufacturer will not assume any liability for such damage.
VARIOSCAN high resolution Model 3021
When handling liquid nitrogen, observe the statutory regulations acc. to
DIN 52900. The relevant rules of this standard are interpreted in
Section 6 of this manual. Never cover the safety hole of the Dewar cap.
lf not in the camera head, transport liquid nitrogen only in licensed
containers having a stable position on the transport vehicle.
lf you incline the camera head too much (>70°, approx.), nitrogen may
leak from the Dewar cap. Therefore, when the Dewar is fully filled with
nitrogen, transport the camera head only in upright position. The filling
volume of the Dewar is 0.5 l approximately (about 5 funnels full of liquid
nitrogen).
Also observe the “Caution” label on the rear of the camera head.
Caution!
Mounted to its original tripod and set up at the average eye height of
1.70 m, the VARIOSCAN camera head features a high stability against
tilting over into any direction (up to 10° inclination under a load of
160 N). Consider that the stability reduces with higher extension of the
tripod legs.

VARIOSCAN high resolution is a thermographic system for the
wavelength ranges of 2 –5 µm (Model 3022) and 8 –12 µm (Model
3021). Thus the system covers both atmospheric windows.
The camera operates on the principle of object scanning. The object is
scanned through a two-dimensional reflecting scanner.
The horizontal scanner scans in lines, with 360 pixels each being
recorded at a frequency of 135 Hz. This scanner operates as a
resonance oscillator driven by a DC motor.
InfraTec

TechnicalDescription
9
The vertical scanner builds up the complete image from the individual
lines. 240 lines can be captured at an image refresh rate of 1.0 Hz.
VARIOSCAN high resolution can also be operated with the following
resolutions (pixel x lines):
360 x 200
360 x 100
360 x 50.
The image information delivered by the scanner is focused onto the
detector through the aspheric imaging optics. The focal length of the
optics is 35 mm, its aperture is f :1. For focusing onto different object
distances, the imaging optics is moved axially covering a range from
0.2 m to infinity.
After every scanned image a reference source (chopper) is moved into
the optical path, and its temperature measured by a thermocouple. On-
line temperature measurement is made possible by comparing the the
radiation intensity of object and chopper.
Between imaging optics and detector, a filter wheel is located. The
wheel contains stops of different diameters that can be rotated into the
optical path at higher temperatures.
The employed object-side scanning method allows the use of an
electro-optical zoom function. This is achieved by varying the oscillation
amplitudes of the scanner reflectors. The maximum zoom possible is
6x.
On the Model 3021, MCT detectors are used having an edge length of
50 x 50 µm. The detectors are cooled by liquid nitrogen.
The metal Dewar vessels used have a hold time of 10 hours.
The Model 3021-ST works with an integrated Stirling cooler.
On the Model 3022, an MCT detector having an edge length of
100 x100 µm is used. These detectors are cooled by a three-stage
thermoelectrical cooling system. The output signal of the detector is
amplified and digitised, and transferred for further processing to the
PC-104 module.
The implemented control software controls all camera functions (see
Description of control software, Section 8).

6Installation
As the VARIOSCAN high resolution is a slow-scan system, you should
fix it for use to a tripod, carrying harness, transport carriage, or similar
support. For this, the bottom plate is provided with a 1/4“-20 mounting
thread (for setting a 3/8“-16 mounting thread remove the adapter).
Power supply
You can power the system either through power supply unit or
rechargeable battery. In addition, you can use any appropriate 12 V DC
source. When connecting it, observe correct polarisation. We
recommend you to use the rechargeable batteries available as
VARIOSCAN high resolution accessories.
Do not operate the system on a defective or insufficiently charged
battery.
Filling Dewar flask of camera head (Model 3021 only)
Caution!
When handling liquid nitrogen, observe the following safety rules:
Never store liquid nitrogen in tightly sealed containers. Keep it in
special containers fitted with a looseiy closing cap to allow any
generated gas to escape. ln this way, dangerous overpressure is
avoided. Avoid direct contact of skin or eyes with liquid nitrogen.
Otherwise serious frostbite will occur!
After filling the Dewar flask of the camera head with nitrogen, close the
filling hole again.
Take care that no foreign bodies get into the Dewar flask.
InfraTec

Installation
18
How to fill the Dewar flask with liquid nitrogen.
qUnscrew the sealing cap on top of the camera head.
qUse the provided funnel and an auxiliary vessel to fill the Dewar
flask slowly with nitrogen.
Note:
qFirst fill in only a little amount of nitrogen to avoid boiling over. Fill
the flask completely only, after it has cooled down sufficiently.
qScrew the cap onto the filling hole. With a fully charged Dewar flask,
you can work for about 10 hours.
Operating the camera
qConnect power supply unit to camera head or push charged video
battery pack into the battery compartment of the camera until the
lock snaps in.
qTurn power switch on camera back to I(VARIOSCAN 3021, 3022)
or II (VARIOSCAN 3021-ST), the indicator LED on the display
lights. During hardware initialisation the display remains dark.
This process takes about 15 s. Subsequently, the software is
initialised. The display shows a corresponding message.
qSwitch position Ion VARIOSCAN 3021 -ST means on standby for
the internal Stirling cooler. The integrated PC is not running in this
mode.
qIf you want to work in the file system without online camera mode,
press the button at the bottom left.
qAfter initialisation, the camera is ready for taking thermograms.
qDirect the camera to a test object, for instance, a person.
qWait until detector has cooled down (on Model 3021-ST up to five
minutes).
InfraTec

Installation
19
After these operations, the thermographic image of the selected object
becomes visible on the display. For this, the system uses factory-set
default parameters. (See also description of VARIOSCAN control
software.)
Test and check list
The instructions for the first use of the VARIOSCAN high resolution
thermographic system are based on basic settings that are necessary
to obtain a first thermographic image.
The test object used was a person. For objects of higher or lower
temperature, you must change the temperature level.
Please note that only a few basic settings are necessary to make a
thermographic image visible. For thermal measurements however,
additional items must be considered (cf. Section 9 -Temperature
measurement).
Before starting operation in normal mode, make sure the following
requirements are met:
1. Dewar flask is cooled down (only on Model 3021).
2. Cover of entrance window has been removed.
3. Power supply unit is connected or a charged battery inserted.
4. Power switch on camera back set to I(3021, 3022) or II
(3021-ST).
