INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
GENERAL
All relevant codes and regulations laid down by the Gas Supply Authorities, Uniform Building Regulations and
requirements of Local Municipal Authorities must be adhered to.
ONLY an registered gas installer, whom must be accredited by JETMASTER, can perform the installation.
All gas installations must comply with the requirements of the national standard SANS 10087-1
Installation and use of this fire must be in accordance with these instructions.
Any appliances incorporating a live fuel effect and designed to operate with luminous flames, may exhibit slight
carbon deposition.
CLEARANCE DISTANCES AND MATERIALS
Heat is radiated from the front of the fireplace. It is therefore important to take special care that no combustible
material is placed close to the opening of the fireplace. No combustible materials e.g. wooden furniture, cupboards
and fittings should be placed within a radius of 700 mm in front and on the sides of the fireplace.
The builders opening must be constructed of a non-combustible material and must conform to any current National
Building Regulations.
The base on which the unit will rest must be constructed of non-combustible materials, and it is recommended that
a non combustible hearth is used.
NOTE:
Hot air rises from the front of the unit. Any item (like ornaments or televisions) located directly above the fireplace
will be heated by this hot air. Care should be taken to diffuse this heat when locating placing sensitive items above
the fireplace.
VENTILATION
Fire uses oxygen to burn; thus it's important to provide enough fresh air for the combustion process. In addition to
that fireplaces without a flue release all combustion products back into the room. This increases the need for
adequate ventilation.
As part of the combustion products released into the room moisture is also released into the room. This will raise
the humidity of the room.
NOTE: Should excessive moisture be noted in the room, additional ventilation must be provided and
mechanical drying might be required.
To ensure efficient performance of the unit, and the safety of the occupants in the room ensure that at least the
following aeration is provided in the room. These openings must be of a permanent nature.
Ventilation must be provided both on floor level as well as on ceiling level, to allow for fresh air to move in through
the floor level opening, and out through the ceiling level opening.
Both floor and ceiling level openings must be at least 250cm2. For instance a opening of 25cm x 10cm.
These ventilation requirements are applicable for all rooms including bedrooms, living areas kitchens etc.
NOTE: This appliance may not be installed in a separately enclosed bathroom or any other separately
enclosed room.

OUTER BOX INSTALLATION
NOTE: Before starting preparations for installing the outer box, the position of the unit should be planned. Do not
start any installation until the complete manual has been studied. Special attention should be paid to:
•Clearance distances.
An example of a typical installation into a bricked wall is used to explain all installation requirements. The same
distances and guidelines apply to all other installation layouts.
STEP 1
Prepare the structure to allow for a cavity of at least the dimensions specified in the table below:

The base on which the unit will rest must be constructed of non-combustible materials, and it is recommended that
a non combustible hearth is used.
The unit is not designed to carry the weight of any building material. The
surround should be constructed so that no weight is carried to the unit.

STEP 2
Locate the outer box into the cavity provided.
For permanent fixing, holes can be drilled through the bottom of the box, to secure it to the structure on which it is
resting. Do not drill any holes closer than 80mm from the front of the box.
GAS BURNER INSTALLATION
It is recommended that the gas supply to the unit be routed through the right hand side panel so that a straight pipe
run to the gas connection can be made. The gas supply can also be routed through the back or bottom panels. An
adequate hole can be drilled in a position that would be hidden by the burner tray.
The gas burner is located into the box, resting on the horizontal flanges of the side panels. Fasten the tray using 4
sets of m4 nuts and bolts.

Connect the gas supply pipe directly to the inlet connection of the gas valve. The connection on the valve is a 8mm
nut-and-olive type compression fitting.
NOTE: Check for leaks when the gas pressure is turned on for the first time.
GRANULAR VERMICULITE
The burner tray must be filled with the granular vermiculite. The vermiculite must be filled to the same level as the
top of the burner.
NOTE: Don’t compress the vermiculite. This might cause uneven burn or unacceptable combustion levels.
CERAMIC PEBBLE LAYOUT
Spread the supplied pebbles evenly spaced over the full cross section of the vermiculite.
NOTE:
•Pebbles must only be placed in 1 layer. Do not place a second layer of pebbles.
•Only use the pebbles supplied by the manufacturer, never substitute for a different pebble. This might
cause unacceptable combustion levels.
GLASS BEAD LAYOUT
Spread a single layer of glass beads over the vermiculite. This layer should be no more than 5mm thick. Some
vermiculite might still be visible through the glass.
The supplied pebbles can now be placed on top of the glass beads in a pattern of your choice. When placing the
pebbles, ensure that the following rules are followed:
•Pebbles should not touch each other and should have a gap of at least 15mm between each other.
•Only one layer of pebbles may be used. Do not build a second layer.
•Only use the number of pebbles supplied, do not use additional pebbles.

COMMISSIONING
It is important to ensure that there is no gas leaks before commissioning the burner. It is the responsibility of the
gas installer to ensure that a leak testing method, suitable for the specific installation is being used.
NOTE: Before commissioning, gas leaks can be detected only between the supply point and the inlet to the
appliance. Once the appliance is operational, and additional check must be done for leaks inside the appliance.
When the appliance is commissioned for the first time, or after it has not been operational for a long period of time,
air might be trapped in the gas supply line. In these cases the air should first be purged from the line to ensure a
flow of gas. Undoing the screw in the test point for inlet pressure (see sketch below) will allow gas to flow, and
assist with purging.
NOTE: Allowing excess gas to escape during purging might cause a dangerous build up of gas in the room. Purge
for short periods only, and repeat if necessary.
The gas pressure to the burner is as stated on the data label. For LPG this is 2.8 kPa. Verify that the gas pressure
is in excess of this value.
NOTE: The gas pressure measured when there is no gas flowing through the burner, will always be higher than
when the burner is functioning and gas is flowing through it.
With the pressure gauge still connected to the inlet pressure test point, switch on the burner.
Once the flame has been established, verify that there is no gas leaks underneath the burner tray. It is the
responsibility of the gas installer to ensure that a leak testing method, suitable for the specific installation is being
used. A soapy water solution being sprayed onto all joints is recommended.
Verify that the gas supply pressure to the unit is 2.8 kPa while the unit is operating. If the pressure drops below this
point, then adjustments must be made to the regulator supplying gas to the appliance.
NOTE: To gain access to the test point, first remove the backing plate behind the valve knob.
Before commissioning the burner, first check for gas leaks.
NEVER SUBSTITUTE THE PEBBLES, GLASS OR GRANULAR VERMICULITE
WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT IS SUPPLIED BY JETMASTER

OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS
GENERAL
Whenever a gas smell is detected, follow the following steps:
•Switch the unit OFF.
•Switch off the gas supply to the unit
•Consult the fault finding guide in this manual
TURNING ON / OFF
The first step is to ignite the pilot burner. With the pilot burner in operation the gas supply to the main burner can be
turned on and off.
IGNITING THE PILOT BURNER.
NOTE: The pilot burner is located in the centre, at the back of the burner just under the top level of the burner.
Push in, and turn the valve knob anticlockwise. This will manually open the gas supply to the pilot burner and
generate a single spark. Keeping the knob depressed, it might be necessary to perform the turning action several
times to create several sparks until the flame ignites.
When the flame is established in the pilot burner, keep the knob depressed for at least another 10s. This allows the
safety valve to activate and to keep the gas supply to the pilot burner open.
Release the knob, and verify that the pilot burner is burning stable.
IGNITING THE MAIN BURNER.
Depress the valve knob and turn anticlockwise to the maximum flame position. This will open the gas flow to the
main burner which will be ignited by the pilot burner.
SWITCHING OFF
The burner can either be switched off completely, or only switched to a standby position with the pilot burner still
burning.
To switch off completely, depress the knob and turn clockwise all the way.
To switch to the standby position, depress the knob and turn clockwise to the position marked for standby. (see
section below)
If a gas smell is detected either when the uni

VALVE POSITIONS
The various valve settings are indicated as follows on the backing plate behind the valve knob.

MAINTENANCE
SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
It is recommended that the unit be inspected annually. It is advisable to do this inspection shortly before the winter
season.
During this inspection the following should be checked:
•Check for gas leaks in the supply line and on the burner itself.
•Ensure that granular vermiculate is not clogged or restricted with dust. (Replace if necessary)
•Ensure that coal layout is correct.
•Remove excess dust from the unit.
•Check soundness of spark cable. Verify that the spark is generated on the pilot unit.
FAULT FINDING
The following table lists typical symptoms and supply the actions to be taken. Should these actions not resolve the
problem then a Jetmaster service technician must be consulted.

•Check that the granular vermiculite is not compressed in lumps that
do not allow flame travel. Loosen vermiculite and replace.
Flame is weak or;
Very high flame
•Check that the DYNAMIC gas supply pressure is correct, while the
burner is operating.
Pilot switching off during operation
(The main burner will also be
extinguished)
•Immediately close main gas supply and turn control knob to the off
position.
•Immediately open doors and windows to allow fresh air into the
room.
•Before re-igniting verify that all permanent ventilation openings in the

room is open and free from obstruction.
•If problem persist, do not use, and contact a service technician.
The unit burns back.
(The flame burns at the bottom of
the tray. The flame will typically
make an audible noise)
•Immediately close main gas supply and turn control knob to the off
position.
•Allow 5min for gas to dissipate and ignite again.
•If problem persist, remove all vermiculite, glass & pebbles, and re
pack as described in this manual.
•If problem persist, contact service technician.
WARRANTEE
Jetmaster warrants that the burner and controls will be free from defects in workmanship or materials under normal
use and service for a period of one year from the invoiced date of purchase.
Jetmaster warrants that the firebox will be free from defects in workmanship or materials under normal use and
service for a period of ten years from the invoiced date of purchase.
This warranty is only effective if:
•At the time of the claim the then owner of the Burner or firebox produces documentary evidence to prove
the date of purchase e.g. The original or a true copy of the invoice.
•The warranty card was fully completed and returned to Jetmaster by mail or by fax within 30 days of
purchase.
•A registered installer installed the Burner.
•No unauthorised adjustments have been made to the burner.
•The installation, operation and maintenance of the Burner or firebox was, in the opinion of Jetmaster,
carried out in accordance with the installation and Operating Instructions current at the time of purchase.
When a valid claim arises under this warranty, Jetmaster will, at its sole option, either repair or replace the Burner
or firebox
Under no circumstances will Jetmaster be liable for any consequential loss or damage or injury arising out of, or in
connection with the use or operation of the Burner or firebox, resulting from the failure to follow the Installation and
Operating Instructions, or from a breach of the Warranty conditions.
