Overview
Introduction
This bulletin is designed to help users install the Maestro software
interface and use it to setup, monitor, and adjust an ACT2 controller or
network of controllers.
Once installed on a PC, the Maestro software enables the user to link
to ACT2 sites either remotely via a modem dial-up or through a direct
(cable) connection to an ACT2 controller.
Direct connection is frequently used as a quick way to enter the initial
setpoints and parameter settings when commissioning an ACT2
controller. A new ACT2 controller may be set up at the shop before it
is delivered to the job site, reducing the need to program the controller
with the integral four key system.
Remote connection is frequently used to monitor the status of a
commissioned site, and change settings, eliminating the need for most
site visits. Remote connection is also be used to gather troubleshooting
information before sending a service technician to the site.

Computer System Requirements
Minimum computer system requirements to use the Maestro software
include:
•IBMCompatible 486 computer or better
•8 Mb RAM
•8 Mb free disk space
•Windows3.1, Windows 95, or Windows 98
•mouse
In addition, if direct connection with an ACT2 controller or ACT2
network is desired, an open serial port is needed. If remote connection
with an ACT2 controller is desired, a Hayescompatible, 9600 baud
or better modem is needed.

Installing the Software
Introduction
This section covers the procedure for installing the Maestro software.
To set up, monitor, or modify an ACT2 controller using a computer,
the Maestro software must be installed on the computer. Once installed
on a computer, the Maestro software enables you to interface with
multiple ACT2 controllers at different locations.

•Before beginning installation, check that you have all disks for the
Maestro software installation.
•The computer must meet the minimum requirements set out in the
Overview section.
•Installation takes 5 to 10 minutes depending on the computer used.

To Do This Follow These Steps:
Install the Maestro Software in
a Windows 3.1 Environment
1. Insert Disk 1 of the Maestro software into
the disk drive.
2. From the Program Manager menu, click
File.
3. Click Run.
4. Type “a:\setup” in the Command Line box
(where “a:” is the disk drive containing
Maestro Installation Disk 1).
5. Follow the installation instructions below,
starting at Step 5.

a Windows 95 Environment
1. Insert Disk 1 of the Maestro software into
the disk drive.
2. Click the Start button.
3. From the start menu, click Run.
4. Type “a:\setup” (where “a:” is the disk
drive containing Maestro Installation
Disk 1).
5. Click the OK button.
6. Review and answer the prompts, clicking
on the Next button to continue.
7. When prompted, remove Disk 1 from the
drive, and insert Disk 2 into the drive.
8. Click the OK button to continue.
9. When prompted, remove the current disk
and insert the next disk until installation is
complete.
Result: When installation is complete, the
Maestro Program Group window will appear
on your desktop.

Installing Maestro Software in Windows 3.1
1. Insert Disk 1 of the Maestro software into the disk drive.
2. From the Program Manager menu, click File.
3. Click Run.

8. To change the directory where the Maestro software will reside,
press the Browse button and follow the screen instructions.
9. Review, then click the Next button to continue.

12. Review the program settings—Click the Back button to change
settings.

14. At the following prompt, remove Disk 1 from the drive, and insert
Disk 2 into the drive.

in another location, for example, in another drive, enter its full path or
click the Browse button to select its path.

Result: The files continue to install.
16. When prompted, remove the current disk and insert the next disk
until installation is complete.
Result: When installation is complete, the Maestro Program Group
(similar to the window shown below) with a shortcut icon to run the
Maestro software is placed on your computer screen.

Establishing a New Site
Introduction
This section covers setting up the Maestro software to recognize a new
site and the controllers at that site.
A new site may be established by either of two methods:
•If the site is not yet functional or the controller is unavailable, it
can still be established by choosing the appropriate controllers
from a pick list displayed by the software. The site parameters can
then be pre-programmed and saved, and when the controller is
available, the parameters can be downloaded to the controller.
•An existing, functional site can be set up through a direct or
modem connection. When the Personal Computer (PC) and the
controller are connected, the Maestro software detects the
hardware at that site and displays the appropriate screens.
A site needs to be established only once. After a site is established,
Maestro can be used to monitor that site. (See Connecting to an
Existing Site.)
Once a site has been established, the Maestro software records and
saves the parameter settings, status logs, and alarm logs for that site.

Hardware Setup
IMPORTANT: Before the Maestro software can recognize an ACT2
controller, the controller must be set up with a
communication ID and told what type of
communication to expect. This is done in the System
Setup menu on the front panel of the ACT2 controller.

Definitions
Communication ID
A unique numerical identifier for a single ACT2 controller. The
communication ID must be established at the ACT2 controller in the
System Setup menu displayed on the front panel LCD. The
communication ID for the first controller at each site must be 1. The
second must be 2, the third must be 3, and so on. (See Programming
ACT2 Controller System Parameters Technical Bulletin LIT-804400.)
Site
A location or job that has a single ACT2 controller or network of
controllers. The site name should be unique and easily associated with
a particular location. It can be up to 23 characters long.
Site Abbreviation
The site abbreviation is used to establish a site folder on the hard drive
for data storage. The site abbreviation can be up to eight numbers or
letters, and must comply with DOS naming conventions.
Phone Number
The phone number assigned to a site is the number that Maestro uses
to dial the modem connected to an ACT2 controller. The phone
number can be up to 23 numbers long.
Unit
A single ACT2 controller.

Connection Types
Dial Connection
Uses a modem on your computer to call a modem attached to the
ACT2 controller or network of controllers.
Direct RS-485 or TCP/IP Connection
A local connection that uses a cable to directly connect a computer to
either the ACT2 controller or a ProLink, which is connected to the
ACT2 controller or network of controllers.
Offline Connection
The computer does not communicate with an ACT2 controller. The
Maestro software simply retrieves information from the computer’s
hard disk and updates any parameter changes made at the computer
during the session to the hard drive (and not to the ACT2 controller).
Information Storage
When a new site is established, the Maestro software creates a folder
to store site specific information on the computer hard drive. The
folder name is taken from the eight character site abbreviation entered
during site setup. Site information is updated when the Disconnect
command is chosen from the Site menu (Any changes made to a sites
parameters are updated and stored, even when working offline).
IMPORTANT: To save information from a session, the Disconnect
command (in the Site menu) must be selected before
the session is terminated.
The following files are stored on the PC hard drive in each of the site
folders:
UNI001.BAK SETP00.000
UNI001.OFL SETP01.000
UNI001.ONL SETP02.000
The SET0x.000 files contain current online and offline parameter
settings for all of the controllers at a site, as well as a backup file of the
site parameter settings from the previous connection to the site.
The UNI001.OFL file contains current offline settings for Unit 1 at the
site. UNI001.ONL contains current online settings for Unit 1, and
UNI001.BAK contains a backup file of the settings for Unit 1 from the
previous connection to the site. UNI002.OFL, UNI002.ONL, and
UNI002.BAK files will have parameter settings for Unit 2 at the site.

To Do This Follow These Steps:
Establish a New Site 1. Double click the Maestro icon to run the
Maestro software.
2. Click File and select Setup Comm.
3. Select the communication port that is
used to connect the computer (either
directly or via a modem) to the ACT2
controller. (See Setting Up External
Communications Technical Bulletin
LIT-804250 for details on how to connect
a computer to a controller)
4. If a modem connection is used, set the
baud rate to 9600.
5. Click the OK button.
6. Click Site and select Pick Site.
7. Click the Add>> button.
8. Type in the requested information.
9. Click the Accept button.
10. Click the OK button.
Establishing the ACT2
Controllers at a New Site
1. Establish the new site (see above).
2. Click the Site menu and select the type of
connection that you currently have with
this site (Dial; Direct RS-485 or TCP/IP;
or Off-Line).
3. If the connection type selected is either
Dial or Direct RS-485 or TCP/IP, the
Maestro software will process the
connection and determine the number and
type of units connected at that site. When
the connection is completed, go to Step 4.
If the connection type selected is
Off-Line, define the units connected at
the new site using the following steps:
a. Click Site and select Pick Unit.
b. Click the Create New Unit button.
c. Type in the communication ID of the
unit. (Must be 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.)
d. Select the type and version of
controller from the list.
e. Click the OK button.
f. Repeat Steps 3a through 3e for
each ACT2 controller at the site.
4. Proceed to Using the Maestro Software to
View System Information to view system
setup and status, or to Using the Maestro
Software to Modify Parameters to set up
the setpoints and other parameters.
