1.1SafetyPrecautions

totheoriginaldesign unless authorized inwritingbythe
manufacturer.Replacementpartsmustbe identicalto
thoseused inthe originalcircuits.Servicesshouldbe per-
formed byqualifiedpersonnelonly.
(2)Alterationsofthedesignorcircuitryofthe productshould
notbe made. Anydesign alterationsoftheproductshould
notbe made.Anydesign alterationsoradditionswill void
the manufacturerswarrantyandwillfurtherrelievethe
manufactureofresponsibilityforpersonalinjuryorproperty
damageresultingtherefrom.

teristicsasthe recommended replacementpartsshownin
the PartsListofServiceManualmaycreateshock,fire,or
otherhazards.
(4)The leadsinthe productsarerouted and dressedwithties,
clamps,tubings,barriersandtheliketobeseparated from
liveparts,hightemperatureparts,moving partsand/or
sharpedgesfortheprevention ofelectricshockandfire
hazard. When serviceisrequired,the originallead routing
anddressshouldbeobserved,and itshouldbe confirmed
thattheyhavebeen returned tonormal,afterreassem-
bling.

Afterreassembling the product,alwaysperforman isola-
tioncheckon the exposedmetalpartsofthe product(an-
tenna terminals,knobs,metalcabinet,screwheads,
headphone jack,controlshafts,etc.)tobe surethe product
issafetooperatewithoutdangerofelectricalshock.Donot
usealine isolation transformerduring thischeck.
Plugthe AClinecorddirectlyintotheACoutlet. Using a
"LeakageCurrent Tester",measuretheleakage current
fromeachexposed metalpartsofthecabinet,particular-
lyanyexposedmetalparthaving areturnpathtothe
chassis,toaknowngood earthground.Anyleakagecur-
rentmustnotexceed 0.5mAAC(r.m.s.).
Alternatecheck method
Plug theACline corddirectlyintothe ACoutlet.Usean
ACvoltmeterhaving, 1,000ohmspervolt ormoresensi-
tivityinthe following manner.Connect a1,500 ohm10W
resistorparalleledbya0.15 FAC-type capacitorbe-
tween an exposedmetalpartand aknowngood earth
ground.
Measurethe ACvoltage acrossthe resistorwiththe AC
voltmeter.
Movethe resistorconnection toeachexposedmetal
part, particularlyanyexposed metalparthaving areturn
pathtothechassis, and measuretheACvoltageacross
the resistor.Now,reversethe plug inthe ACoutletand
repeateachmeasurement. Voltagemeasured anymust
notexceed0.75 VAC(r.m.s.).Thiscorrespondsto0.5
mAAC(r.m.s.).
1.2Warning
(1)Thisequipmenthasbeen designedand manufactured to

(2)It isthe legalresponsibilityofthe repairertoensurethat
thesesafetystandardsaremaintained.
(3)Repairsmustbe madeinaccordancewiththe relevant

1.3Caution
Burrsformedduring moldingmay beleftoveron someparts
ofthechassis.

forming repairofthissystem.
1.4Criticalpartsforsafety
Inregardwithcomponentpartsappearing on the silk-screen
printedside (partsside)ofthe PWBdiagrams,the partsthat are
printedoverwithblacksuchasthe resistor(),diode ()
and ICP()oridentified bythe ""marknearbyarecriticalfor
safety.When replacing them,be suretousethe partsofthe
sametypeand ratingasspecified bythemanufacturer. (Except
the JCversion)

1.5Preventing staticelectricity
Electrostaticdischarge(ESD),whichoccurswhen staticelectricitystoredinthe body, fabric, etc. isdischarged, candestroythelaser
diode inthe traverseunit (opticalpickup).Takecaretopreventthiswhenperforming repairs.
1.5.1Grounding topreventdamagebystaticelectricity
Staticelectricityinthe workarea can destroythe opticalpickup (laserdiode)indevicessuchasDVDplayers.
Becarefultousepropergrounding inthe area whererepairsarebeing performed.

Ground the workbenchbylayingconductivematerial(suchasaconductivesheet)oran iron plateoveritbeforeplacingthe
traverseunit(opticalpickup)onit.
(2)Groundyourself
Usean anti-staticwriststrap toreleaseanystaticelectricitybuiltup inyourbody.
(3)Handlingthe opticalpickup
Inordertomaintainqualityduring transportandbeforeinstallation,bothsidesof thelaserdiode on the replacement optical
pickup areshorted.Afterreplacement,returnthe shortedpartstotheiroriginalcondition.

Donotuseatestertochecktheconditionofthelaserdiodeinthe opticalpickup.The tester'sinternalpowersourcecan easily
destroythe laserdiode.
1.6Handling thetraverse unit(opticalpickup)
(1)Donotsubjectthe traverseunit(opticalpickup)tostrong shocks, asit isasensitive,complexunit.
(2)Cutoffthe shorted part ofthe flexiblecableusing nippers,etc. afterreplacing theopticalpickup.Forspecificdetails, refertothe
replacement procedureinthe text.Removethe anti-staticpinwhen replacingthe traverseunit. Becarefulnottotaketoo long
atimewhen attachingittotheconnector.
(3)Handlethe flexiblecablecarefullyasitmaybreakwhensubjected tostrong force.
(4)Itisnotpossibletoadjustthe semi-fixed resistorthatadjuststhe laserpower.Donotturnit.

1.8.1Handling ofTraverse Unitand LaserPickup
(1)Donottouchanyperipheralelement ofthe pickup orthe actuator.
(2)The traverseunitandthe pickup areprecisiondevicesand thereforemustnot be subjected tostrong shock.
(3)Donotuseatestertoexamine the laserdiode.(Thediodecaneasilybe destroyedbythe internalpowersupplyofthe tester.)
(4)Toreplacethe traverseunit, pull outthe metalshortpinforprotectionfromcharging.
(5)Whenreplacingthe pickup, aftermounting anewpickup, removethe solderon theshort land whichisprovided at the centerof
the flexiblewiretoopenthe circuit.
(6)Half-fixed resistorsforlaserpoweradjustmentareadjusted inpairsatshipmenttomatchthe characteristics of the opticalblock.
Donotchange thesetting ofthesehalf-fixedresistorsforlaserpoweradjustment.
1.8.2Destruction ofTraverse Unitand LaserPickup byStaticElectricity
Laserdiodesareeasilydestroyedbystaticelectricitycharged on clothingorthehuman body.Beforerepairing peripheralelementsof
the traverseunitorpickup,besuretotakethe followingelectrostaticprotection:
(1)Wearanantistaticwristwrap.
(2)Withaconductivesheetorasteelplateonthe workbenchon whichthe traverseunit orthe pick up istobe repaired,groundthe
sheetorthe plate.
