3. Intended use
SKORPION® Lever WS-016 type is designed for releasing stuck, caked, sucked in, rusted, jammed
and frozen covers:
•sewer manholes,
•telecommunication manholes,
•hydrant boxes,
•storm drain grates.
The scope of device use ends with breaking/removing the blockage (resulting from reasons as
above).
The lever is not designed for lifting covers/manholes. For this purpose, another device should
be used (e.g., SKORPION winch type WS-001 or Ws-006) after removing the lever structure from
the unclogged manhole/grate.
Limitations of use:
•The device is used to detach grates and manholes weighing up to 170 kg.
•Do not remove grates and manholes the weight and type of which are not known.
•Before using the lever for a particular operation, it is necessary to select a suitable hook for
the type of cover/grate to be detached.
•It is forbidden to detach grates and manholes in the presence of peopleor animals on their
surface.
•The lever must be operated using manual force only. Do not extend the factory mounted
lever arm.
•The lever is designed to break/remove the lock only for horizontal structures that allow the
external support foot [A] to be placed on the hardened ground of the manhole perimeter.

Photo No. 5: Location of the hook and support elements
•The position of hook [1] in the device design should bewithin range [2] as shown in the
photo below. As far as possible, the position of hook must be as close as possible to
the eccentric mechanism [3].
•It is not permitted to use additional shims under the support foot [A and B] –see photo
above; the factory applied gap is a safe distance.
•The device is not designed for work in explosive atmospheres. Regardless of the
stripping tool used, the cover/manhole connection is not an intrinsically safe
construction.
•If excessive resistance is encountered during unclogging of a grate or manhole
(including damage to the hook), remove the cause of jam and retry unclogging.
•It is forbidden to operate levers with visible or established signs of damage (including
damage to hooks –which in this case must be replaced with defect-free ones).
The lever may be used in closed rooms and in the open air in conditions acceptable to the user.
The lever is designed for intermittent operation.

13. Inspection of the device
13.1. Initial review
After reading and understanding this manual, the technical service employee responsible for
commissioning the device at the user’s premises is required to:
•verify the delivery and structural integrity,
•set up the lever in the operating position,
•inspection of screw connections and eccentric function,
•test operation with a load of the selected manhole cover (up to 170 kg).
The result of inspection (positive/negative) should be recorded by the inspector in the Review Card
(according to the form –Annex No. 2
After a positive result of the inspection, the lever should be handed over to an employee
(organizational unit) responsible for current operation of the device. The operating personnel should
perform the activities provided for in the initial review andtest work for conducted detachments of the
grate/hatches as part of the training. Any irregularities, the removal of which is beyond the
qualifications of the operating personnel, should be reported to the supervisor.
13.2. Review during setting the structure to the working position
After checking whether the conditions for using the lever in accordance with the intended use, as
described in this manual, have been met, the operator is obliged to:
•verify the structural and equipment integrity and completeness,
•set up the lever structure in the operating position,
•inspection of screw connections and eccentric function.
Any irregularities that are beyond the qualifications of the operating personnel must be reported to
their supervisor.
13.3. Annual review/maintenance after repair
Follow the steps provided for the initial review.
The result of inspection (positive/negative) should be recorded by the inspector in the Review Card
(according to the form –Annex No. 3).

12. Operation
After cleaning the cover
hole, the appropriate type
of hook is inserted into the
cover and the locking
setting of hook is checked.
Insert the hook into the
lever structure (through
the gap between arms)
and position the support
feet (the foot under the
eccentric mechanism on
the hatch envelope and
the feet at the ends of
arms on the unclogged
cover). Then tighten the
hook retaining nut until
you feel resistance.
After gripping the rubber
cap of the lever arm, turn it
into position as shown. The
eccentric mechanism in
combination with the lever
principle causes minimal
lifting of the cover edge on
the support foot side of the
envelope.
The lever and hook are then removed. The unclogged cover is now ready to be opened with the
selected lifting device.
