WARNING:
Due to the mains switch being located on the rear panel, the apparatus must be located in an open area without anything
obstructing access to the mains switch.
FOR UK:
The mains lead is terminated with a moulded three pin plug.
Should the plug on the flexible cord not be of the type for your socket outlets do not use an adaptor but remove the plug from the
cord and discard. Carefully prepare the end of the supply cord and fit a suitable plug.
The fuse must be replaced with one of the same rating.
IMPORTANT
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:
Blue: Neutral
Brown: Live
Yellow & Green: Earth
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this appliance may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the
terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured Blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked by the letter N or coloured Black.
The wire which is coloured Brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured Red.

A mains lead compatible with national earthing standards and complying with the local safety requirement is supplied.

Explanation of Graphical Symbols
The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol,
within an equilateral triangle, is intended to
alert the user to the presence of uninsulated
“dangerous voltage” within the product’s
enclosure that may be of a sufficient
magnitude to constitute a risk of electrical
shock to persons.
The exclamation mark within an equilateral
triangle is intended to alert the user to the
presence of important operating and
maintenance (servicing) instructions in the
literature accompanying the appliance.
SAFETY INFORMATION

Please take heed of the following before using the KEF PSW3500. Note also that the word “appliance” shall
refer to the KEF PSW3500 subwoofer, or any part of it.
1. Read Instructions -All the Safety and Operating Instructions should be read before the appliance is operated.
2. Retain Instructions -The Safety and Operating Instructions should be retained for future reference.
3. Heed Warnings -All warnings on the appliance and in the Operating Instructions should be adhered to.
4. Follow Instructions -All Operating and Use Instructions should be followed. Only use the accessories/attachments
supplied or specified.
5. Water and Moisture -The appliance should not be used in or near water - for example, near a bathtub,
washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, and the like.
6. Ventilation -The appliance should be situated so that its location or position does no interfere with its proper
ventilation. For example, the appliance should not be situated on a bed, sofa, or similar surface that may block
any ventilation openings; or placed in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or cabinet that may impede the
flow of air through the ventilation openings.
7. Heat -The appliance should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves or
other appliances (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
8. Power Sources -The appliance should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the
operating instructions or as marked on the appliance.
9. Grounding or Polarisation -The precautions should be taken so that the grounding or polarisation means of an
appliance are not defeated.
10. Power-cord Protection -Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or

receptacles and the point where they exit from the appliance.
11. Cleaning -The appliance should be cleaned only as recommended by the manufacturer.
12. Non-use Periods -Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
13. Object and Liquid Entry -Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the
enclosure through openings.
14. Damage Requiring Service -The appliance should be serviced by qualified service personnel when:
a) The power supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
b) Objects have fallen or liquid has been spilled into the appliance; or

1. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the KEF PSW3500 powered
subwoofer. We are confident that your PSW3500 will
provide reliable, high performance sound for many
years to come.
The PSW3500 subwoofer offers high-end performance
in both music and home cinema installations.
For ease of use and installation the subwoofer is
equipped with an IR remote control, allowing for easy
adjustment of level, cut off frequency and phase from
your listening position. An IR extension is included for
use if the subwoofer is obscured from view.
Please read this manual fully before installing your
powered subwoofer.
2. Unpacking
Follow the unpacking procedure shown in Fig.1 p4.
Make sure the feet are correctly fitted before the
subwoofer is lifted into position.

1. Voltage selector
Please ensure the correct voltage is selected for the
country of use.
2. Mains power on/off switch
Please ensure all connections are made before the
appliance is turned on.

5. Level control
Used to set the level of the subwoofer relative to the
main speakers output.
6. IR extension input
Used to add the IR extension if the subwoofer is
obscured from view
7. Auto/manual switch
With the auto position selected the subwoofer will
automatically switch to standby mode if there is no
input signal detected for greater than 160 minutes.
The subwoofer is automatically taken out of standby
when an input signal is detected. With the manual
position selected the subwoofer standby function is
controlled via the remote hand set.
8. Low-Pass/LFE (Low Frequency Effects) switch
Selecting LFE bypasses the low-pass filter and sets
the frequency response flat to 250Hz as required for
use with a surround sound processor in a home
theatre set-up.
9. Variable Low-pass filter roll off rate
Selects the roll off rate of the subwoofer low-pass
filter at either 12dB per octave (2nd order) or 24dB
per octave (4th order).
10.Music/cinema switch
Used for added impact when watching movies.
11. Ground Lift Switch
Set this to ‘lift’ if earth loop hum is heard
12. Line Level High Pass Outputs
Used for filtering the input to small loudspeakers in
a stereo set-up.
13. Line Level Inputs
Used to connect the subwoofer to the line level
signal from a preamplifier or the dedicated LFE
output from a surround sound processor.

1. Standby/on button.
Used to put the subwoofer in standby or to bring it
out of standby. (see Auto/Manual switch).
2. Level control
Used to set the output level of the subwoofer relative
to the main speakers.
3. Crossover frequency control
Used to adjust the internal low-pass crossover filter
of the subwoofer.
4. Phase control
Used to adjust the acoustic phase of the subwoofer
relative to the main speakers.
4. Positioning
As the sub-bass (low frequency) sound produced by the
subwoofer is close to omni-directional positioning is less
critical than with full range conventional speakers.
However, we recommend placement away from the
corners of the room and not too close to the listener.
As all rooms are different it is best to experiment with
the location of the subwoofer until you are happy
with the sound.
5. Set-up and fine tuning
Make sure all signal connections are made before the
subwoofer is turned on.
5.1 Movie set-up
With KHT speakers
Follow the connection diagram in Fig. 5 page 8
•Upon first power-up the phase control is set to zero

and the level is set to be close to the sensitivity of
the satellite speakers, so no adjustment should be
required. If these have been changed, set the
phase shift to zero (fully left) and the level to about
half way using the remote control.
•Set the Low-Pass/LFE switch to LFE.
•On the surround sound processor’s speaker menu,
set the speakers to ‘small’ and set subwoofer to ‘on’.
•Use the processor controls to adjust the level of the
subwoofer when setting each channel level.
•Use the processor delay if the subwoofer is located
closer to your listening position than the main
loudspeakers.
•Set Music/Cinema switch to suit your personal
preference.
With large full range speakers
Follow the connection diagram in Fig. 5B page 8
•Follow the same procedure as for KHT speakers but,
in the surround sound processor speaker menu, set
the speakers to ‘large’.
5.2 Music only, stereo set-up
With KHT speakers
Follow the connection diagram in Fig. 6A page 8
Set subwoofer switches as follows
•Music/Cinema to Music
•Slope to 24dB/Octave
•Low-Pass/LFE to Low-Pass
•Initially set x-over to halfway
Select a piece of music that you are familiar with which
has a constant repetitive bass line. Start with the level
and frequency controls in the middle positions and the
phase control set to zero. Adjust the level control until
you are happy with the low frequency levels compared
to the main speakers. Now adjust the frequency control
so that there is no obvious change in the sound from
very low frequencies to higher frequencies. Adjust the
phase control to achieve the smoothest integration
between sub and main speakers. KEF recommends
that you take some time adjusting the controls, whilst
listening to a varied selection of music, until you are
satisfied with the sound balance.
With large full-range speakers

If only one set of line outputs is avaiable on your pre
amplifier, use ‘y’ connections to split the L an R signals
between power amplifier and subwoofer.
Set subwoofer switches as follows
•Music/Cinema to Music
•Low-Pass/LFE to Low-Pass
•For bass reflex design speakers, the slope should
be set to 24dB/Octave and for closed box
loudspeakers the slope should be set to
12dB/Octave
Set the level and frequency controls by listening to a
familiar piece of music as described in the set-up for
KHT speakers above.

4. Positionnement
Comme le son sub-bass (basse fréquence) produit par
le subwoofer est presque omnidirectionnel, le
positionnement est plus libre qu’avec des haut-parleurs
traditionnels. Nous recommandons toutefois de ne pas
placer le subwoofer dans les coins de la pièce, ni trop
près de l’auditeur.
Comme toutes les pièces sont différentes, il vaut mieux
expérimenter l’emplacement du subwoofer jusqu’à ce
que vous soyez satisfait du son.
5. Configuration et réglage fin
Assurez-vous que toutes les connexions ont été
réalisées avant de mettre le subwoofer sous tension.
1. Introduction

sommes certains que votre PSW3500 vous livrera un
son fiable et puissant durant de nombreuses années.
Le subwoofer PSW3500 affiche des performances de
haut niveau, qu’il soit intégré dans un équipement audio
ou home cinema.
Pour une plus grande facilité d’utilisation et
d’installation, le subwoofer est équipé d’une commande
à distance infrarouge qui permet un réglage aisé du
niveau, de la fréquence de coupure et de la phase
depuis votre position d’écoute. Une extension
infrarouge est disponible dans le cas où le subwoofer
est dissimulé.
Veuillez lire ce manuel entièrement avant de procéder à
l’installation de votre subwoofer.

Lorsque la position auto est sélectionnée, le
subwoofer passe automatiquement en mode veille
si aucun signal d’entrée n’est détecté pendant plus
de 160 minutes. Le subwoofer est automatiquement
sorti du mode veille lorsqu’un signal d’entrée est
détecté. Lorsque la position manuel est
sélectionnée, la fonction de veille du subwoofer est
contrôlée via la commande à distance.
