1. RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS FOR ALARMS
•Locate the first alarm in the imme iate area of the sleeping rooms. Try to protect the
exit path as the sleeping rooms are usually farthest from the exit. If more than one
sleeping area exists, locate a itional alarms in each sleeping area.
•Locate a itional alarms to protect any stairway as stairways act like chimneys for
smoke an heat.
• Locate at least one alarm on every floor level.
• Locate an alarm in every sleeping room.
• Locate an alarm in every room where electrical appliances are operate (i.e. portable
heaters or humi ifiers).
• Locate an alarm in every room where someone sleeps with the oor close . The close
oor may prevent the alarm from waking the sleeper.
• Smoke, heat an combustion pro ucts rise to the ceiling an sprea horizontally.
Mounting the smoke alarm on the ceiling in the centre of the room places it closest to
all points in the room. Ceiling mounting is preferre in or inary resi ential construction.
• When mounting an alarm on the ceiling, locate it at a minimum of 10cm (4") from the
si e wall (see Diagram "A").
• For wall mounting, use an interior wall an place the top e ge of the alarm at least
10cm (4") an not more than 30.5cm (12") from the ceiling.
•
Install smoke alarms on slope , peake or cathe ral ceilings at or within 0.9m
(3ft) of the highest point (measure horizontally). Smoke alarms in rooms with
ceiling slopes greater than 0.3m in 2.4m (1 foot in 8 feet) horizontally shall be
locate on the high si e of the room. A row of etectors shall be space an
locate within 0.9m (3ft) of the peak of the ceiling measure horizontally.(see
DIAGRAM "C")
• Put smoke alarms at both en s of a be room hallway or large room if the
hallway or room is more than 9.1m (30 feet) long.
• Install Smoke Alarms on tray-shape ceilings (coffere ceilings) on the highest
portion of the ceiling or on the slope portion of the ceiling within 12”
(305mm) vertically own from the highest point (see DIAGRAM "D").
Mobile Home Installation
Mo ern mobile homes have been esigne an built to be energy efficient. Install
smoke alarms as recommen e above (refer to DIAGRAM A an C). In ol er mobile
homes that are not well insulate compare to present stan ar s, extreme heat or
col can be transferre from the outsi e to the insi e through poorly insulate
walls an roof. This may create a thermal barrier which can prevent the smoke
from reaching an alarm mounte on the ceiling. In such units, install the smoke
alarm on an insi e wall with the top e ge of the alarm at a minimum of 10cm an
a maximum of 30.5cm below the ceiling (see DIAGRAM A).
If you are not sure about the insulation in your mobile home, or if you notice that
the outer walls an ceiling are either hot or col , install the alarm on an insi e wall.
For minimum protection, install at least one alarm close to the sleeping rooms. For
a itional protection, see SINGLE FLOOR PLAN in DIAGRAM B.

2. LOCATIONS TO AVOID
• In the garage. Pro ucts of combustion are present when you start your car.
• In front of force air supply ucts use for heating an air con itioning, near
ceiling fans,or other high air flow areas.
• Less than 10cm (4”) from the peak of an ‘A’ frame type ceiling.
• In an area where the temperature may fall below 0°C or rise above 40°C such as
garages an unfinishe attics; this shoul also inclu e electrical boxes expose to
these environments..
• In usty areas. Dust particles may cause nuisance alarm or failure to alarm.
• In very humi areas. Moisture or steam can cause nuisance alarms.
• In areas where the Relative Humi ity (RH) is above 93%.
• Do not install where the ventilation openings in the unit coul be impe e by
items such as newspapers, table-cloths, curtains, etc.
• Near fluorescent lights. Electronic “noise” may cause nuisance alarms.

3.INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION
CAUTION: THIS UNIT IS SEALED. THE COVER IS NOT REMOVABLE!
1). Remove the mounting plate from the back of the alarm by hol ing the mounting
plate an twist the alarm in the irection in icate by the “REMOVE” arrow see
Figure 4.
2). To ensure aesthetic alignment of the alarm with the hallway, the “A” line on the
mounting plate shoul be parallel with the hallway when ceiling mounting.
3). After selecting the proper smoke alarm location as escribe in Section 1, attach the
mounting plate to the ceiling as shown in Figure 1. Use the screws an anchors
provi e to secure the mounting plate.For wall mounting, see FIGURE 2. Be sure to
turn the text "UP" an the arrow up.
4). When installing the battery, press the battery remin er finger own into the battery
compartment an install the battery (see Figure 3).

installing the mounting plate, place the alarm on the mounting plate with the
alignment marks line up. Twist the alarm in the irection in icate by the “ON”
arrow on the alarm cover (see Figure 4) until it locks in place.
6). Tamper Resist Feature: To make your smoke alarm tamper resistant, a tamper resist
feature has been provi e . Activate the tamper resist feature by breaking out the
block in the trim ring (see Figure 5). When the blocks are broken out, the tamper
resist tab is allowe to engage the mounting bracket. Rotate the alarm onto the
mounting bracket until you hear the tamper resist tab snap into place, locking the
alarm on the mounting bracket. Using the tamper resist feature will help to eter
chil ren an others from removing the alarm from bracket. NOTE: To remove the
alarm when the tamper resist tab is engage , press own on the tamper resist tab
with a screw river, an rotate the alarm off of the bracket (see Figure 6).
CAUTION! EARLY WARNING FIRE DETECTION IS BEST ACHIEVED BY THE
INSTALLATION OF FIRE DETECTION EQUIPMENT IN ALL ROOMS AND AREAS OF
THE HOUSEHOLD AS FOLLOWS:
A SMOKE ALARM INSTALLED IN EACH SEPARATE SLEEPING AREA (see DIAGRAM
"B" and "RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS FOR ALARMS") AND HEAT OR SMOKE

4.OPERATION AND TESTING
OPERATION: The smoke alarm is operating once a fresh battery is installe an testing
is complete. When pro ucts of combustion are sense , the unit soun s a lou 85 b
pulsating alarm until the air is cleare .
FLASHING LED LIGHT: This smoke alarm is equippe with a flashing re in icator light.
The light is locate above the test button an will flash every 5 minutes to in icate
that the smoke alarm is operating. During smoke alarm (an uring the testing alarm
pattern), the LED will flash every secon .
FAULT OR END OF LIFE SIGNALS: The alarm will chirp 3 times every 40 secon s to
in icate a fault, or signal en of life of the alarm at 10 years. In both of these cases,
the alarm shoul be replace . In the event of low battery, the alarm will chirp once
every 40 secon s.
TESTING: Test by pushing the test button on the cover an hol ing it own for a
minimum of 5 secon s. This will soun the alarm if the electronic circuitry, horn an
battery are working. If no alarm soun s, the unit has a efective battery or other
failure.
The alarm sequence is 3 long beeps, pause, 3 long beeps.
TEST THE ALARM WEEKLY TO ENSURE PROPER OPERATION. Erratic or low soun
coming from your alarm may in icate a efective alarm that shoul be returne for
service.
NOTE: If at any time your alarm fails to operate correctly (erratic or low soun , for
example), contact Ki e Safety (see Section 9).
NEVER USE AN OPEN FLAME OR COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS TO TEST YOUR ALARM,
YOU COULD DAMAGE THE ALARM OR IGNITE NEARBY MATERIALS AND START A
STRUCTURE FIRE.
Smoke alarms are esigne to minimize nuisance alarms. Cigarette smoke will not
normally set off the alarm, unless the smoke is blown irectly into the alarm.
Combustion particles from cooking may set off the alarm if the alarm is locate close
to the cooking area. Large quantities of combustible particles are generate from
spills or when broiling. Using the fan on a range hoo which vents to the outsi e
(non-recirculating type) will also help remove these combustible pro ucts from the
kitchen.
Mo el DY29 has a HUSH control that is extremely useful in a kitchen area or other
areas prone to nuisance alarms. For more information refer to Section 5, Hush Control
Feature.
If the alarm oes soun , check for fires first. If a fire is iscovere , get out of the
buil ing an call the fire epartment. If no fire is present, check to see if one of the
reasons liste in Section 2 may have cause the alarm.

5. HUSH CONTROL FEATURE
The Hush button is extremely useful in a kitchen area or other areas prone to nuisance
alarms. The Hush feature has the capability of temporarily esensitizing the smoke
alarm circuit for about 9 minutes. This feature shoul only be use when a known
alarm con ition, such as smoke from cooking, activates the alarm. If the alarm oes
soun , check for fires first. If a fire is iscovere , get out an call the fire epartment.
If no fire is present, check to see if one of the reasons liste in Locations to Avoi may
have cause the alarm. The smoke alarm is esensitize by pushing the Hush button
on the smoke alarm cover. If the smoke is not too ense, the alarm will silence
imme iately for approximately 9 minutes. The LED will flash every 10 secon s uring
the 9 minute hush. This in icates that the alarm is in a temporarily esensitize
con ition. The smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately 9 minutes.
If after this perio particles of combustion are still present, the alarm will soun again.
The Hush feature can be use repeate ly until the air has been cleare of the
con ition causing the alarm. Pushing the Test button on the alarm will en the Hush
perio .
IF THERE IS ANY QUESTION AS TO THE CAUSE OF AN ALARM, IT SHOULD BE
ASSUMED THAT THE ALARM IS DUE TO AN ACTUAL FIRE AND THE DWELLING
SHOULD BE EVACUATED IMMEDIATELY.
NOTE: DENSE SMOKE WILL OVERRIDE THE HUSH CONTROL FEATURE AND
SOUND A CONTINUOUS ALARM.
CAUTION: BEFORE USING THE ALARM SMART HUSHFEATURE. IDENTIFY
THE SOURCE OF THE SMOKE AND BE CERTAIN A SAFE CONDITION EXISTS.
6.MAINTENANCE
BATTERY REPLACEMENT
If tamper resist has been use , refer to Figure 6 in Section 3 for alarm removal
instructions.
WARNING: Alarm will not attach to mounting bracket unless battery is installe .
Removal of battery will ren er the unit inoperative.
To replace the battery, remove the alarm from the mounting plate by rotating the
alarm in the irection of the “OFF” arrow on the cover (see Section 3, Figure 4).
The Smoke Alarm is powere by a 9V alkaline battery. A fresh battery shoul last for
a minimum of 5 years un er normal operating con itions. This alarm has a low
battery monitor circuit that will cause the alarm to “chirp” approximately every 30-
40 secon s for a minimum of thirty (30) ays when the battery gets low. Replace the
battery when this con ition occurs. Be sure to push the test button to confirm proper
operation after replacing the battery. When the alarm is in low battery con ition,
pressing the hush button will silence it for 8 hours.

CLEANING YOUR ALARM
YOUR ALARM SHOULD BE CLEANED AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR
To clean your alarm, remove it from the mounting bracket as outline in the
beginning of this section. You can clean the interior of your alarm (sensing chamber)
by using your vacuum cleaner hose an vacuuming through the openings aroun the
perimeter of the alarm. The outsi e of the alarm can be wipe with a amp cloth.
After cleaning, reinstall your alarm. Test your alarm by using the test button.
7.LIMITATIONS OF SMOKE ALARMS
WARNING: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY
• Fire-warning equipment for resi ential occupancies are capable of protecting
about half of the occupants in potentially fatal fires. Victims are often intimate
with the fire, too ol or too young, or physically or mentally impaire such that
they cannot escape even when warne early enough that escape shoul be
possible. For these people, other strategies such as protection-in-place or assiste
escape or rescue woul be necessary.
• Lea ing authorities recommen that both ionisation an photoelectric smoke
alarms be installe to help insure maximum etection of the various types of fires
that can occur within the home. Ionisation sensing alarms may etect invisible fire
particles (associate with fast flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms.
Photoelectric sensing alarms may etect visible fire particles (associate with slow
smol ering fires) sooner than ionisation alarms.
• A battery powere alarm must have a battery of the specifie type, in goo
con ition an installe properly.
• Storage an Transport Con itions: -20° C to +60° C, 5-95%RH (non-con ensing)
• Smoke alarms must be teste regularly to make sure the batteries an the alarm
circuits are in goo operating con ition.
• Smoke alarms cannot provi e an alarm if smoke oes not reach the alarm.
Therefore, smoke alarms may not sense fires starting in chimneys, walls, on roofs,
on the other si e of a close oor or on a ifferent floor.
• If the alarm is locate outsi e the sleeping room or on a ifferent floor, it may not
wake up a soun sleeper.
• The use of alcohol or rugs may also impair one’s ability to hear the smoke
alarm. For maximum protection, a smoke alarm shoul be installe in each
sleeping area on every level of a home.
• Although smoke alarms can help save lives by provi ing an early warning of a
fire, they are not a substitute for an insurance policy. Home owners an renters
shoul have a equate insurance to protect their lives an property

8. GOOD SAFETY HABITS
DEVELOP AND PRACTICE A PLAN OF ESCAPE

• Have a family meeting an iscuss your escape plan, showing everyone what to o
in case of fire.
• Determine a place outsi e your home where you all can meet if a fire occurs.
• Familiarize everyone with the soun of the smoke alarm an train them to leave
your home when they hear it
• Practice a fire rill at least every six months, inclu ing fire rills at night. Ensure
that small chil ren hear the alarm an wake when it soun s. They must wake up
in or er to execute the escape plan. Practice allows all occupants to test your plan
before an emergency. You may not be able to reach your chil ren. It is important
they know what to o.
• Install an maintain fire extinguishers on every level of the home an in the
kitchen, basement an garage. Know how to use a fire extinguisher prior to an
emergency.
• Current stu ies have shown smoke alarms may not awaken all sleeping in ivi uals,
an that it is the responsibility of in ivi uals in the househol that are capable of
assisting others to provi e assistance to those who may not be awakene by the
alarm soun , or to those who may be incapable of safely evacuating the area
unassiste .
There are situations where a smoke alarm may not be effective to protect
against fire. For instance:
- Smoking in be .
- Leaving chil ren unsupervise .
- Cleaning with flammable liqui s, such as gasoline.
- Fires where the victim is intimate with a flaming initiate fire; for example, when
a person's clothes catch fire while cooking.
- Fires where the smoke is prevente from reaching the etector ue to a close
oor or other obstruction.
- Incen iary fires where the fire grows so rapi ly that an occupant's egress is
blocke even with properly locate etectors

it fails to operate ue to improper maintenance or ina equate A.C. or
D.C. electrical power.
THE LIABILITY OF KIDDE SAFETY EUROPE LTD OR ANY OF ITS PARENT
OR SUBSIDIARY CORPORATIONS ARISING FROM THE SALE OF THIS
SMOKE ALARM OR UNDER THE TERMS OF THIS LIMITED WARRANTY
SHALL NOT IN ANY CASE EXCEED THE COST OF REPLACEMENT OF
SMOKE ALARM AND, IN NO CASE, SHALL KIDDE SAFETY EUROPE LTD
OR ANY OF ITS PARENT OR SUBSIDIARY CORPORATIONS BE LIABLE
FOR CONSEQUENTIAL LOSS OR DAMAGES RESULTING FROM THE
FAILURE OF THE SMOKE ALARM OR FOR BREACH OF THIS OR ANY
OTHER WARRANTY, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, EVEN IF THE LOSS OR
DAMAGE IS CAUSED BY THE COMPANY’S NEGLIGENCE OR FAULT.
