1. Introduction
Fiber optical talk set is used during fiber cable installation, commissioning and repair, when other
communications systems are inconvenient or not available. A pair of KI 023 Optical Talk Set, made up
of a 1310 nm instrument & a 1550 nm instrument, provides convenient full duplex voice communication
over a single optical fiber. Additionally, these talk sets can be used as a single wavelength test source
with a tone feature for continuity testing.

3. Getting Started
3.1. Installing batteries
3.2. Turn instrument on/off
To turn instrument on, press [ ] and the display below will be seen on LCD,
“auto-off” shows that instrument will turn off automatically 10 minutes after the last keypress. This
feature can be enabled or disabled by pressing [ ].
To turn instrument off, press and hold [ ] until the LCD display shuts off.
3.3. Tilt Bail
The tilt bail can be used to conveniently position the instrument at an angle, providing operator with
a clear view on the read-out on its LCD display.
3.4. LCD Display Backlight
When instrument is turned on, press [ ] to switch on backlight, press [ ] again to switch it off.

3.5. Optical Connector
To insert fiber into the connector, pull dust cap out, and gently push fiber into the connector until it
“clicks”. All standard instruments come with SC/PC optical connectors. If other connectors types are
required, please specify while ordering the talk set.
3.6. Laser Source
The instrument of a talk set pair comes with a built-in laser source of 1310 nm and 1550 nm respectively.
The output of the laser source mode can be selected between CW (0 Hz), 270 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz.
Power up instrument by pressing [ ]
To turn on the laser source: Press [Source],
To Select output mode: Press [ ] in turn to select 0 Hz (CW), 270 Hz, 1000 Hz or 2000 Hz.
To turn off laser source: Press [ ].
4. Making and Receiving Calls
Connect the 1310 nm instrument of talk set pair at one end of a fiber communication link, and connect
the 1550 nm instrument at the other end of the link.
Connect the connectors of headsets to earphone and microphone jacks on both instruments correctly.
The Volume Control knobs of the headsets can be used to adjust sound volume from earphones.
To initial a call at 1310 nm instrument, and answer the call 1550 nm instrument:
On 1310 nm instrument, press [ ] to initiate a call, the display below will be seen on its LCD,

Initiated call can be cancelled by pressing [].
On 1550 nm instrument, ring tone indicating an incoming call with the display below seen on its LCD,
Press [ ] to answer call, or press [ ] to hang up call.
The same instruction above can be used to initiate a call on 1550 nm instrument, and answer the call
on 1310 nm instrument.
5. Eye Safety Precaution
The talk set feature a built-in class-I laser source, while working with the light source or
handling live fibers, always observe eye safety procedures compliant with your company
policy, relevant laser safety standards and safety practices.
6. Care for Your Instrument
This is a precision optical instrument. Keep it clean, dry and do not drop. Avoid exposure to moisture
or excessive vibration. When not in use, always replace the dust cap to protect the instrument’s adaptor
or adaptor head from accidental damages. During prolonged storage, remove battery to eliminate the
possibility of acid leakage. Clean optical surface of connector on instrument regularly using a 2.5m stick
type cleaner.

against Kingfisher International or its representatives. This product is guaranteed against defective
components and workmanship for 18 months from delivery, unless stated in the purchase contract. This
warranty excludes connector adaptors or incorrect use. Opening the instrument invalidates the
