WARRANTY
We warrant that the pump supplied from us is free from defective material and
faulty workmanship. This warranty holds good for a period of 12 months from the
date of commissioning the equipment or 18 months from the date of dispatch from
our factory, whichever is earlier. Our liability in respect of any complaint is limited
to replacing part/parts free of charge ex-works or repairs of the defective part/parts
only to the extent that such replacement/repairs are attributable or arise solely from
faulty workmanship or defective material.
This warranty holds good only for the products manufactured by us.

1. GENERAL:
1.1 The booklet covers i structio s for followi g types of RKB Vertical (cold model)

1.2 Cold model pumps (without stuffi g box cooli g arra geme t) are supplied for
liquid havi g temperature up to 90°C.
1.3 Pumps whe properly i stalled & give due care i operatio & mai te a ce
should operate satisfactorily for a lo g period of time.
1.4 Whe the pump is received, sometime before the actual use of pump, it should
be i spected & located i dry place. The shaft should be rotated o ce i a
mo th to preve t pitti g of beari g surfaces.
2. Safety Instructions:
2.1 General Information
Please read the ma ual thoroughly prior to i stallatio of u it. The Health a d
Safety i structio s shall be read a d fully u derstood. The i structio s i this
docume t shall also be read a d fully u derstood.
Whe ever the equipme t is operated, mai tai ed or used i a y way, the
procedures detailed withi the Health a d Safety Dossier (DHS) a d a y
procedures detailed withi this i structio s ma ual shall be followed. The
pump supplied by Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL has bee desig ed with
safety i mi d, where hazards ca ot be elimi ated; the risk has bee
mi imized by the use of guards a d other desig features. Some hazards ca ot
be guarded agai st a d the i structio s below MUST BE COMPLIED WITH for

safe operatio . These i structio s ca ot cover all circumsta ces. It is the
respo sibility of the user of the equipme t for mai tai i g safe worki g
practices at all times.
2.1.1 KBL products are desig ed for i stallatio i desig ated areas, which are to be
kept clea a d free of obstructio s that may restrict safe access to the co trols
a d mai te a ce access poi ts.
Pump ameplate is fitted to each u it a d must ot be
removed. Loss of this plate could make ide tificatio impossible. This i tur
could affect safety a d cause difficulty i obtai i g spare parts. Such accide tal
loss or damage if occurs, co tact KBL immediately.
2.1.2 Access to the equipme t should be restricted to the perso el respo sible for
i stallatio , operatio a d mai te a ce a d they must be qualified, adequately
trai ed a d supplied with the appropriate tools for their respective tasks.
2.1.3 KBL firmly i sists that all perso el respo sible for i stallatio , operatio a d
mai te a ce of the equipme t must read the ma ual before a y work is do e.
2.1.4 Ear defe ders should be wor where the specified equipme t
oise level exceeds locally defi ed safe levels. Safety glasses or goggles should
be wor where worki g with pressurized systems a d hazardous substa ces.
Other perso al protectio equipme t must be wor where local rules apply.
2.2 DO NOT wear loose or frayed clothi g or jewellery, which
could catch o the co trols or becomes trapped i the equipme t.
2.3 Operatio of the equipme t for the applicatio other tha for which it is
supplied ca i crease the risk from hazards. Please co sult KBL before maki g
such cha ge i the applicatio of the equipme t.
2.4 Improper i stallatio , operatio a d mai te a ce of the product supplied by KBL
could result i i jury or death.
2.5 Withi the ma ual, safety i structio s are marked with safety symbols.

2.6 Transport, Handling and Storage Instructions:
2.6.1 Transport.
Pumps are dispatched i duly assembled co ditio . Lubricati g oil i the beari g
housi g is drai ed prior to dispatch of pump. Pumps are protected agai st
corrosio a d packed for tra sport by ormal road, rail a d sea carriers.
2.6.2 Handling.
Crushing Hazard.
Whe lifti g the pump or pump set, use lifti g equipme t havi g a safe worki g
load rati g suitable for the weight specified. Use suitable sli gs for lifti g a y
pump ot provided with lifti g poi ts.
The use of suitable fork lift truck a d four chai cra e sli g equipme t is
recomme ded but locally approved equipme t rati g may be used.

2.6.3 Storage.
2.6.3.1 Temporary Storage for up to six weeks.
If the pump u it is ot to be used immediately it should be stored carefully i a
horizo tal positio , i a sheltered, dry locatio .
Additio al rust preve tive should be applied to all u pai ted
carbo steel or cast iro parts a d should ot be removed u til fi al i stallatio .
2.6.3.2 Long Term Storage.
Shearing Hazard.
Do NOT place fi gers or ha ds, etc., i to the suctio or discharge pipe outlets
a d do NOT touch the impeller, if rotated, may cause severe i jury. To preve t
i gress of a y objects, retai the protectio covers or packagi g i place u til
removal is ecessary for i stallatio .
Fill the beari g housi g with recomme ded oil/grease to
e sure that the shaft a d beari gs remai rust free.

2.6.3.3 Exposed or Extreme Conditions Storage.
For exposed storage or extreme varia ts i atmospheric or e viro me tal
co ditio s, please refer to KBL for special storage i structio s to suit the
co ditio s acceptable.
3. Equipment Schedule:
3.1 Installation:
3.1.2 For locatio , prepari g fou datio , i stallatio , alig me t, pipi g, ge eral

alo g with this booklet must be followed very carefully.
3.1.3 Flushing/Quenching of Mechanical Seal:
Whe ever pump is supplied with mecha ical seal, the flushi g pla as per
recomme ded i O/A shall have to be followed.
3.1.4 MOUNTING AND ALIGNMENT
A jaw-flex type coupli g is used to co ect pump shaft to the driver. Follow the
i structio s as show below.
3.1.5 ALIGNMENT
ALWAYS REMEMBER “A FLEXIBLE COUPLING IS NOT A UNIVERSAL JOINT”.
Correct alig me t is esse tial for the smooth operatio of the pump. There are
two types of misalig me t betwee the pump shaft a d the drive shaft, which
are:
1) A gular misalig me t – Shaft with axis co ce tric, but ot parallel.
2) Parallel misalig me t – Shaft with axis parallel, but ot co ce tric.
This misalig me t is checked by usi g a straight edge as show i figure give
above.

3.1.6 Before commissio i g the pump set, please e sure:
1) The pipe co ectio s are flushed a d tighte ed properly.
2) Alig me t is proper.
3) Auxiliary pipi g co ectio s such as seali g co ectio s, cooli g
co ectio s, etc., are made. Details of seali g liquid are give i our
supply order.
4. OPERATION:
4.1 Before starting the pump check the following:
1) The pump rotates freely by ha d.
2) Fill the grease for the drivi g e d beari gs, if ot do e earlier. The beari gs are
packed with grease i the factory for grease lubricated pumps.
3) However, if the pump is stored for a lo ger time it is ecessary to refill the grease i
the beari gs.
4) If pump is with exter al flushi g arra geme t to bush beari gs, the please e sure
that exter al flushi g co ectio is give a d flushi g liquid is supplied to the pump.
(Refer Fig No. 5).
5) The directio of rotatio , it should be a ticlockwise whe viewed from drivi g e d.
6) The seali g liquid a d cooli g water co ectio s are properly tighte ed a d
adjusted.
7) The directio of rotatio of driver. It should correspo d to the directio of rotatio of
pump.
8) The pump casi g a d the suctio pipeli e is fully primed with the liquid.
9) Valve o delivery side is closed.
10) The cock for pressure gauge co ectio is closed.
11) The stuffi g box packi g is properly tighte ed for gla d packed pump.
4.2 Starting the pump
1) Start the pump. Let the prime mover pickup its full speed.
2) Ope the valve o delivery li e gradually.
3) Regulate the required flow by adjusti g the delivery valve.
4) Ope the cock for pressure gauge co ectio .
4.3 During running the pump
Check the following things and regulate if needed –
1) The pump is ru i g smoothly.
2) The flow of seali g liquid a d cooli g water is u i terrupted. If ecessary,
provide sight glass i the pipi g.
3) The beari gs are ot getti g ab ormally hot.
4) Power co sumptio is withi the limit.

5) The gla d is properly tighte ed to give leakage of approximate 60-80 drops per
mi ute through stuffi g box.
6) Head a d capacity developed by the pump is as specified.
7) Power co sumptio is withi limit.
8) E sure that there is o mecha ical frictio i the pump.
9) Stop the pump immediately, if a y defects are detected. Do ot start
the pump u less the defects are rectified. Report immediately to the supplier, if it
is ot possible to rectify the defects.
4.4 During stopping the pump
1) Close the valve o the delivery pipe li e.
2) Stop the motor.
3) Close the cooli g water a d seali g liquid co ectio s.
4) If the pump is ot required to be operated for a lo g time, drai the
casi g completely. If the pump is required to be stored for a lo g time, the
beari g housi g should be dried i ter ally with hot air a d should be flushed with
moisture free protective such as light oil or kerose e.

5.1.2 RKBV pumps are suitable for clear liquids havi g temp -30 to +90 deg C.
5.2 Directio of rotatio : The directio of rotatio is A ti clockwise whe viewed from

Please refer to the Arrow ameplate attached to pump for the
directio of rotatio .
5.3 Beari gs: The shaft is supported with a tifrictio a gular co tact ball beari g at
drivi g e d a d bush beari g at o -drivi g e d. The beari g specificatio s are
give below. The desig atio s of beari gs are as per SKF catalogue. However,

5.4 Beari g temperature:
Maximum allowable temperature of beari gs: 80°C.
5.5 Lubricatio of Beari g:
Beari gs are grease lubricated. Beari gs are lubricated duri g assembly of pump
at our factory. The regreasi g should be do e after every 1000 hours of ru i g.
To refill the beari gs with fresh grease, use a grease gu a d the grease through
the ipples provided.
DO NOT APPLY LUBRICANT WHEN PUMP IS RUNNING.

5.10 KEY SIZES FOR RKBV PUMPS
5.11. Coupli g: Coupli g shall be supplied alo g with the pump o ly if specified so.
Coupli g type shall be preferably pi bush type or jaw flex type.
5.12. Pressure Relaxatio Pipi g:
(Please refer Drg. No. TP 101-84-004-0) Fig. 4.
To reduce stuffi g box pressure o delivery side, pump is supplied with special
pipi g which co ects the chamber just before the delivery side stuffi g box to
lower pressure regio . This pipi g is provided i order to reduce the pressure of
liquid acti g o the stuffi g box to mi imize leakage through gla d. The chart
e closed i dicates the stage to which the pipe is to be co ected. The chart
holds well o ly if suctio pressure is below 2 bars. Alter ative arra geme t shall
be recomme ded if suctio pressure exceeds 2 bars.

6. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE :
Preve tive mai te a ce schedule is the periodical checks a d precautio s by
which possibilities of failures a d breakdow s are mi imized.
6.1 Daily checks:
6.1.1 Hourly record of suctio a d delivery pressure, discharge qua tity, i put to
the pump driver should be mai tai ed.
6.1.2 Beari g temperature, stuffi g box leakage / stuffi g box temperature, this
gives a idea of mecha ical performa ce of the pump.
6.1.3 Noise a d vibratio s are the first sig s of impe di g troubles like cavitatio ,
air lock, beari g failure, choki g of impeller or casi g a d such other operati g
troubles. The pump performa ce should therefore be checked for oise a d
vibratio s.
6.2 Periodical checks:
6.2.1 The temperature of the beari g should be measured by thermometer. Safe
maximum worki g temperature of the beari g is 80°C.
6.2.2 The lubrica ts of the beari g should be checked. The lubrica t might get
co tami ated with foreig material or get blacke ed due to overheati g. I
such cases, beari gs should be flushed a d charged with fresh lubrica ts.
6.2.3 Check for the stuffi g box leakage.
6.2.4 The alig me t of the pump u it should be checked. Due to operatio al
vibratio s, atmospheric temperature or stress i duced by the weight of the
pipi g, the alig me t may get disturbed.
6.2.5 Sufficie t qua tity of suitable type of lubrica t should be ready for daily a d
emerge cy use.
6.2.6 Calibrate the measuri g i strume t.
6.3 Annual checks:
6.3.1 The pump should be overhauled completely to check the cleara ce a d to
replace wor -out parts. Cleara ce betwee impeller a d casi g ri gs, shaft

importa t. The beari gs should be clea ed thoroughly a d lubricated.
6.3.2 The effects of liquid ha dled o pump compo e ts should be checked. If
ab ormal corrosio , erosio is observed, the compo e t should be replaced
with that of suitable material.
6.3.3 The auxiliary pipeli es a d fu ctio i g of the auxiliary system should be
checked. The mai pipe also should be checked for scali g, leakage, etc.
6.3.4 The measuri g i strume ts, gauges, etc., should be recalibrated.
6.3.5 Full ru i g test may be carried out to check whether there is a y fault i the
performa ce, i compariso with origi al performa ce.

6.3.6 Pipi g supports should be checked so that the pipes do ot i duce u wa ted
stresses o the pump.
7. OVERHAULING:
7.1 Procedure for disma tli g a d re-assembly
While disma tli g a d re-assembli g, the cross-sectio al assembly drawi g
a d specificatio part list should be referred.
7.2 Disma tli g:
Follow the followi g simple steps to disma tle the pump.
7.2.1 Isolate power supply to motor.
7.2.2 Shut off valves co trolli g flow to a d from the pump.
7.2.3 Drai the liquid from pump by removi g the drai plug or ope the pump
casi g drai cock.
7.2.4 Remove all auxiliary tubi g a d pipi g.
7.2.5 We recomme d matchi g the pu ch mark of the coupli g halves.
7.2.6 I case of the pumps with spacer type flexible coupli gs, disco ect coupli g
(pump half a d motor half) from the coupli g spacer a d remove coupli g
spacer. I case of ordi ary flexible coupli gs, remove the motor from the
base.
7.2.7 Remove the delivery a d suctio pipe co ectio s.
7.2.8 Take out seali g water, pressure relaxatio pipi g (if applicable) a d other
co ectio s.
7.2.9 U screw the tie rod uts (584), remove washers (623).
7.2.10 Remove motor alo g with motor stool (290).
7.2.11 Remove the pump from fou datio a d place it o a plai table or platform.
Remove pump half coupli g.
7.2.12 Drai the liquid from suctio a d delivery casi g by removi g the drai plugs.
7.2.13 Loose the gla d (22300) at DE & NDE.
7.2.14 Take out beari g cover DE (27000).
7.2.15 U lock lock washer (41500) a d u screw the lock ut (33600).
7.2.16 Take out beari g housi g (24001) alo g with beari g/beari gs. For this
purpose use two jaw puller. Do ot use hammer to remove brg./brg. housi g.
7.2.17 Remove adjustable washer (20901), liquid deflector (23600), dista ce sleeve
(31700), gla d (22300), ‘O’ ri g (52200), shaft sleeve (31100).
I case of pumps with mecha ical seals, remove mecha ical seal
cover (23100) alo g with seal-i sert carefully. Similarly remove shaft sleeve
(31502) alo g with rotati g parts of the mecha ical seals.

7.2.18 U screw the tie rod uts (58400), remove washers of tie bar (62300).
7.2.19 Take out delivery casi g (10100).
7.2.20 Take out tie bars (34100).
7.2.21 Remove diffuser (12800) from the delivery casi g alo g with ‘O’ ri g
(52202).
7.2.22 Take out impeller (15100) a d the remove key (32000/32001/32002).
Remove stage casi g (12400) alo g with ‘O’ ri g (52201).
7.2.23 Repeat procedure give i 7.2.22 till you reach first stage impeller.
7.2.24 Remove first stage Impeller (151). Take out key (32000).
7.2.25 Remove the shaft (18000) alo g with sleeve (31000) from suctio casi g.
7.2.26 Remove shaft sleeve (31000).
7.2.27 After disma tli g, all the parts are to be clea ed a d checked thoroughly for
wear, tear a d damage of impeller, diffusers, casi gs or wear ri gs a d
i ter stage bushes eed to be replaced if drop i head a d capacity of the
pump is substa tial.
7.2.28 All the damaged parts should be replaced by ew o e.
7.2.29 I spect all the ‘O’ ri gs carefully. Replace the damaged o es. It is advisable to
use NEW ‘O’ RINGS i stead of used o es.
7.3 Re-assembly:
7.3.A This procedure covers re-assembly of pump after complete disma tli g of the
pump. Before re-assembly, all the parts should be thoroughly clea ed i
kerose e, petrol or be ze e to remove the dust, rust, etc. After clea i g the
ecessary parts should be replaced.
Cautio :
a) Use arbour press while fitti g the beari gs. However, it is recomme ded that
beari gs should be heated i oil bath or by heater at temperature 70 to 80
0
C
a d the fitted. (If hot oil bath is ot available the ARBOUR PRESS must be
used).
Use gloves while fitti g beari gs from hot oil bath.
b) Slide i board ball beari g o shaft by ha d, make sure that it is square with
shaft. Press eve ly the i er race of the beari g u til beari g is seated firmly
agai st the shaft shoulder.
c) Do ’t use hammer to fit the beari gs. Do ot damage the shaft surface
especially where it is i co tact with oil seal.

1. All parts are free from burr a d those are clea ed thoroughly with kerose e/
thi er.
2. Bro ze bush is fitted properly i the suctio casi g.
3. Grub screw i betwee bo ze bush a d suctio casi g is tighte ed fully.
4. Bala ci g holes provided o impellers are ot choked.
5. Replaceme t compo e ts such as ‘O’ ri gs, gla d packi g, keys, etc., are of
correct size.
6. Grub screw (98600) is fitted i the stage casi gs.
7. Drai plugs are fitted o suctio casi g & delivery casi g body.
8. Air ve t plug is fitted o suctio casi g body.
9. The seque ce of gla d packi g arra geme t is as give above.
10. Check ru out of shaft by dial gage. It should be withi 0.05 mm.
7.3.1 Tighte lock ut (336.1) o the shaft at NDE a d that ut is locked with grub
screw o the shaft.
7.3.2 Mou t the shaft sleeve (31000) suctio side o the shaft from DE.
7.3.3 I sert the shaft so far assembled i side the suctio casi g (113) bore. Please
e sure that bush beari g is fitted i the suctio casi g.
7.3.4 Give proper support to shaft at bottom side ( o -drivi g side) as show i Fig: 7
7.3.5 Place the key for first Impeller (32000) i the key way o the shaft. Mou t the
Impeller (151), match the key way o the impeller to that o the shaft. (First
stage Impeller should be of full diameter, i case other Impellers are trimmed to
suit the duty co ditio s).
7.3.6 Mou t ‘O’ ri g o suctio casi g.
7.3.7 I sert diffuser with guide va es (12900) alo g with iter stage bush (35501) a d
wear ri g (19101) o the Impeller hub.
7.3.8 Mou t the stage casi g (12400) alo g with wear ri g (19001) o suctio casi g.
7.3.9 Place the key of stage Impeller (32001) i the keyway o the shaft. Mou t the
ext Impeller.
7.3.10 Repeat the procedure from 7.3.6 to 7.3.10 till you reach fi al stage
impeller.
