1. BEFORE YOU BEGIN
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS
READ AND SAVE FOR THE CONSUMER
WARNING: Risk of scalding or other severe injury.
Before completing installation, the installer must set the maximum water temperature setting of this valve to
minimize the risks associated with scalding hazards according to ASTM F 444.
The installer is responsible for installing the valve and adjusting the maximum water temperature of this
thermostatic valve according to instructions.
This valve meets or exceeds ANSI A112.18.1M, ASSE 1016, and CSA B125.
If you do not understand any of the installation or temperature adjustment instructions in this document, in the United
States please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-4-KOHLER. Outside the U.S. please contact your
distributor.

bag included with the valve package, and attach the plastic bag to the valve handle for the owner’s reference.

maximum water temperature. Any variance in
settings or water inlet conditions from those used
during factory calibration may raise the discharge
temperature above the safe limit, and may present a
scalding hazard. Responsibility for installation and
adjustment of this device in accordance with these
instructions lies with the installer.

ABOUTTHISVALVE
The thermostatic mixing valve cartridge does not
contain an integral volume control/shut-off valve.
Youmust install a separate volume control/shut-off
valve (K-403) downstream of any valve outlet that
doesnothaveanintegralshut-offvalve.TheK-400
thermostatic mixing valve requires separate
volume control/shut-off valves downstream of
each mixing valve outlet. Refer to Fig. #3.
The K-401 thermostatic mixing valve contains a
single volume control/shut-off valve for controlling
the water flow through the shower outlet. When
plumbingtothevalve’sbath outlet, you must install
a separate volume control shut-off valve (K-403)
downstream from the bath outlet. Refer to Fig. #3.
K-400 and K-401 thermostaticmixing valvesdo
not have an integral aspirator. For installations
that use a bath diverter spout, you must install a
twin ell (K-9663) with integral aspirator between
the valve and the bath spout. If these thermostatic
mixing valves are installed without an aspirator
water will flow from the shower and bath spout at
the same time. Refer to Fig. #3.
Determine the correct drain size and capacity for
your installation. If two thermostatic mixing valves
are used together, water flow volumes of 24 gpm
(1.51 lps) or more are possible, depending upon
the water supply pressure.
Determine the correct water heater size and
capacity for your installation. A typical shower
installation uses an approximate mix of 75% hot
water and 25% cold. A custom shower application
using three 2-1/2 gpm (.16 lps) showerheads can
useabout45gal.(170.3l)ofhotwaterin8minutes.
Choose a water heater large enough for your
installation.
NOTES
Shut off the main water supply.
Observe all local plumbing codes.
Inspect the waste and supply piping for damage.
Replace as necessary.
The valve is calibratedto 104F(40C) at the first
stop position, and the maximum temperature limit
stop is positioned so the outlet water temperature
does not exceed 120F (49C).
Factory calibrated inlet conditions are:
Hot and cold water pressure = 43-1/2 psi (3.05
kg/cm)
Hotwatersupplytemperature=149F(65C)
Coldwatersupplytemperature=59F(15C)
If inlet conditions differ from those used during
factory calibration, it may be necessary to
re-calibrate the valve after installation. The
installer must check the mixed flow
temperature after installation, and adjust the
valve as needed according to the instructions.
ThisvalvecomplieswithASMEA112.181M,ASSE
1016, and CSA B125. The valve is listed with
ASSE, CSA, and IAPMO/UPC.

3. INSTALLATION
CONSTRUCT FRAMING AND INSTALL
ROUGH PLUMBING
Determine the desired location for the valve according to
the rough-in information on Page 3, and construct
suitable stud and support framing.
Use 3/4” nominal copper tubing and fittings throughout
this installation. Smaller diameter piping upstream or
downstream of the valve will reduce the performance of
the valve.
INSTALL VALVE
Flush the hot and cold water supply lines to remove any
debris.
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. This valve
contains plastic and rubber components. Do not
apply excessive heat to the valve body when you
make solder connections. Do not apply flux or acids
directly to the valve, as damage to the seals and
plastic components may result. Do not apply
petroleum-basedlubricantstothevalvecomponents,
as damage may result.
Use thread sealant, and connect the 3/4” hot and cold
water supply lines to the valve inlet ports. Install water
hammer arrestors in the supply lines. The inlet ports
are marked “HOT” and “COLD”, and must be connected
to the correct water supply lines to ensure proper valve
function. Make sure the integral volume control/shut-off
valve on the K-401 is on top.
Connect the water outlet lines to the valve ports. Use a
3/4” plug for any unused outlet port.

The plaster guard is attached to the face of the mixing
valve with two screws. Do not remove the plaster guard
until instructed. Use the plaster guard to determine the
depth of the valve in the wall, and to trace thecut-out line
in the wall material. The finished wall surface must be
within the MIN. - MAX. depth shown on the plaster guard.
Secure the water supply piping to the support framing.

K-400: Turn on the water supply lines to the valve, and
check for leaks. Run water through the mixing valve and
all showers and the spout, and check the system for
leakage. Turn off the water.
K-401: Remove the plaster guard. Do not turn the
thermostatic mixing valve stem until you have installed
the handle trim.
Turn on the water supply lines to the valve, and check for
leaks.Runwaterthroughthemixingvalveandallshowers
andthespout,andcheck the system for leakage. Use the
volume control/shut-off valve (top control) to control the
water flow to the shower outlet. Turn off the water.
Reinstall the plaster guard.

ADJUSTTEMPERATURE SETTINGS
This valve has been calibrated at the factory to provide
104F (40C) water at the mixing valve’s first stop
position. The maximum temperature limit stop has been
adjusted so the maximum water temperature will not
exceed 120F (49C).
NOTE: The listed water temperature settings are based
upon the following factory conditions:
Hot and cold water pressure = 43.5 psi (3.05
kg/cm)
Hot water temperature = 149F (65C)
Cold water temperature = 59F (15C)
If the actual water supply conditions differ significantly
from those listed, you may need to re-calibrate the valve.

NOTE: Do not turn the thermostatic mixing valve stem at
this time. Turning the mixing valve stem will change the
factory calibration setting.
Turn the water on for several minutes, then position a
thermometer in the water stream. If the existing water
supply conditions match the factory conditions, the water
temperature should be close to 104F (40C). If the
water temperature is not close to 104F (40C), remove
and discard the plaster guard if it is still attached.
Slowly rotate the thermostatic mixing valve stem until the
watertemperatureisaconstant104F(40C).Thewhite
markonthe limitstopshouldbeinlinewith theblackmark
on the mixing valve body. If necessary, carefully pry the
limit stop off the valve cartridge with a thin blade, and
re-install it so the white mark faces upward as required.
The limit stop must be correctly positioned to ensure trim
fit.
Do not turn the thermostatic mixing valve stem after you
adjust the temperature setting until you have installed the
mixing handle trim.

INSTALL MIXING VALVE TRIM - ALL
MODELS
Remove and discard the plaster guard if it is still in place.
Thread the collar(s) to the valve, and hand tighten.
Verify that each trim seal is correctly installed in an
escutcheon hole. The seal(s) should be installed so the
flat side faces outward, and the tapered side in.
Remove the backing from the adhesive gasket material.
Starting at the escutcheon drain opening, carefully apply
the gasket material around the back edge surface of the
escutcheon.Trimawayanyexcessgasketmaterialsothe
escutcheon drain opening is not blocked.
Carefully slip the escutcheon over the collar(s) and
against the finished wall. Position the escutcheon so the
“Kohler” logo is to the top. Secure the escutcheon to the
valve with two screws.
NOTE: For the K-400 mixing valve, proceed to Fig. #10,
“Complete Trim Installation - All Models” .

INSTALL VOLUME CONTROL TRIM - K-401
VALVE
Rotate the volume control valve stem fully
counterclockwise.
Press the volume control knob onto the volume control
valve stem so the “Off” indicator graphic (smallest line) is
to the top (toward the top escutcheon detent), as shown.
Securethevolumecontrol knobto thevalvestemwiththe
screw.
For Round Handle: Carefully install the thin O-ring into
the first groove in the volume control knob. Fit the
uninstalled grip ring into the second groove in the volume
control knob.
For Lever Handle: InstalltheO-ringinto the groove in the
volume control knob.
For All Handles: Press the cap onto the volume control
knob so the cap detent is in line with the “High” indicator
graphic on the volume control knob.
If needed apply a small amount of lubricant to the inside
wall of the cap to aid in assembly (a capsule of lubricant
is included in the hardware kit).

COMPLETE TRIM INSTALLATION - ALL
MODELS
Press the mixing valve knob onto the mixing valve stem
so the knob button and “104” mark face upward (toward
the escutcheon detent), as shown. Verify that the knob
does not rotate counterclockwise. Do not press the knob
button.
Turn on the water for a few minutes to allow the
temperature to moderate. Then use a thermometer to
check the water temperature. The water temperature
should be 104F (40C).
NOTE: Units sold internationally will have Celsius
temperatures listed on the mixing valve.
If the watertemperature is104F(40C),presstheknob
button and rotate the knob fully counterclockwise so the
“120” mark faces upward. Check the water temperature
again. It should now be 120F (49C). Turn the knob
clockwise so the “104” mark is upward. Again check the
water temperature to make sure it is still 104F (40C).
Turn off the water.
If the water temperature does not match the temperature
indicated on the knob, repeat the mixing valve calibration
steps according to the “Adjust Temperature Settings”
section starting on Page 6.
Secure the mixing valve knob to the valve stem with the
screw. Install the thin O-ring into the first groove in the
knob. Carefully position the uninstalled grip ring into the
second groove in the knob.
Press the cap onto the valve so the cap detent is in line
with the knob button. If needed, apply a small amount of
the supplied silicone lubricant (capsule included in
hardware kit) to the inside wall of the cap to aid in
assembly.

ACERCADEESTA VÁLVULA
Elcartuchodelaválvula termostáticade mezclado
no contiene una válvula integral de control de
volumenollavedepaso.Es necesarioinstalaruna
válvula separada de control de volumen/llave de
paso (K-403) en la línea de salida de cualquier
válvulaquenoposeaunallavedepasointegral.La
válvula termostática de mezclado K-400 requiere
deválvulasseparadasde controlde volumen/llave
de paso, en la línea de salida de cada válvula de
mezclado. Consulte la Fig. #3.
La válvula termostática de mezclado K-401
contiene una válvula de control de volumen/llave
de paso, para controlar el agua que fluye a través
de la línea de salida de la regadera. Al trazar la
plomería para la salida de la bañera, es necesario
instalar una válvula separada de control de
volumen/llavedepaso(K-403)enlalíneadesalida
de la bañera. Consulte la Fig. #3.
Las válvulas termostáticas de mezclado K-400
y K-401 no poseen un aspirador integral. Para
instalaciones que emplean un surtidor desviador
de bañera, se debe instalar un codo gemelo
(K-9663) con aspirador integral entre la válvula y
el surtidor de bañera. En caso de que estas
válvulas termostáticas de mezclado sean
instaladas sin un aspirador, ello causará que el
agua fluya a través del surtidor de la regadera y de
la bañera simultáneamente. Consulte la Fig. #3.
Determine el tamaño correcto del drenaje y la
capacidad para su instalación. Si se utiliza dos
válvulas termostáticas de mezclado
conjuntamente, es posible alcanzar volúmenes de
agua de 24 gpm (1,51 lps), dependiendo de la
presión del agua en el suministro.
Determine el tamaño correcto del calentador de
agua y la capacidad para su instalación. Una
instalación tipo de regadera emplea
aproximadamente 75% de agua caliente y 25% de
agua fría. Una función personalizada con tres
cabezales de regadera de 2-1/2 gpm (0,16 Lps),
puede emplear cerca de 45 galones (170,3 L) de
agua caliente en 8 minutos. Elija un calentador de
agua de suficiente tamaño para su instalación.
NOTAS
Cierre el suministro principal de agua.
Cumplacontodosloscódigoslocalesdeplomería.
Revise las tuberías de alimentación y de desagüe
para determinar si están dañadas. Reemplace de
ser necesario.
La válvula está calibrada a 104F (40C) en la
primera posición. La temperatura máxima está
ajustada de manera que el agua en la salida no
exceda de 120F (49C).
Las condiciones de calibraje de fábrica son:
Presión del agua fría y caliente = 43-1/2 psi
(3,05 Kg/cm)
Temperatura del agua caliente = 149F (65C)
Temperatura del agua fría = 59F (15C)
Si las condiciones de la entrada difieren de las
condicionesusadasduranteelcalibrajedefábrica,
puede ser necesario recalibrar la válvula después
de la instalación. El instalador debe verificar la
temperatura del flujo mixto después de la
instalación y ajustar la válvula de ser
necesario, de acuerdo a las instrucciones.

3. INSTALACIÓN
CONSTRUYALA ESTRUCTURA Y
PREPAREELTENDIDO DE PLOMERÍA
Determine la ubicación de la válvula, de acuerdo al
diagramadeinstalación,enlaPágina13,yconstruyauna
estructura adecuada de travesaños y soportes.
Utiliceunatuberíanominal decobrede3/4” yaccesorios,
a lo largo de esta instalación. La tubería de menor
diámetro contracorriente o corriente abajo de la válvula
reducirá el rendimiento de la válvula.
INSTALE LA VÁLVULA
Descargue las líneas del agua fría y caliente para
remover cualquier sedimento.
PRECAUCIÓN: Riesgo de daños al producto. Esta
válvula contiene componentes plásticos y de goma.
No aplique calor excesivo al cuerpo de la válvula
cuando realice soldaduras. No aplique fundente o
ácidos directamente a la válvula, pues ello puede
dañar los sellos y los componentes plásticos. No
aplique lubricantes compuestos de petrolato a los
componentes de la válvula, pues ello puede producir
daños.
Utilice sellador para rosca y conecte las líneas de
suministro de agua de 3/4” a los puertos de entrada de la
válvula. Instale el amortiguador de choques de agua

Verifique que la válvula integral de control de
volumen/llave de paso en el modelo K-401 esté en la
parte superior.
Conecte las líneas de salida a los puertos de la válvula.
Utilice un obturador de 3/4” para cualquier puerto de
salida no utilizado.

El protector de yeso está unido a la parte frontal de la
válvula de mezclado con dos tornillos. No remueva el
protector de yeso hasta que se le indique. Utilice un
protector de yeso para determinar la profundidad de la
válvula en la pared y para trazar la línea de corte en el
material de la pared. La superficie de la pared acabada
debe tener la profundidad MÍN. - MÁX. indicada en el
protector de yeso.
Fije el suministro de agua a la estructura de soporte.

PRECAUCIÓN: Riesgo de quemaduras. No gire el
vástago de válvula termostática de mezclado
después de ajustar la temperatura, hasta instalar la
guarnición de la llave de mezclado. Este aparato ha
sido calibrado en la fábrica, para asegurar una
temperatura de agua máxima segura. Cualquier
variaciónenelajusteoenlascondicionesde entrada
del agua, respecto al calibraje de la fábrica puede
aumentarlatemperaturade descargapor encimadel
límite considerado seguro y producir quemaduras.
K-400: Abra las líneas de suministro de agua y verifique
que no haya fugas. Deje correr el agua en la válvula de
mezclado, las regaderas y el surtidor, y verifique que no
haya fugas en el sistema. Cierre el agua.
K-401: Remueva el protector de yeso. No gire el vástago
de válvula termostática de mezclado hasta haber
instalado la guarnición de la llave.
Abra las líneas de suministro de agua y verifique que no
haya fugas. Deje correr el agua en la válvula de
mezclado, las regaderas y el surtidor, y verifique que no
haya fugas en el sistema. Utilice la válvula de control de
volumen/llavede paso (controlsuperior) paracontrolarel
flujo de agua hacia la salida de la regadera. Cierre el
agua. Reinstale el protector de yeso.
Complete la pared acabada.

AJUSTEDELA TEMPERATURA
Esta válvula ha sido calibrada en la fábrica para
proporcionar una temperatura de 104F (40C) en la
primera posición de la válvula de mezclado. La
temperatura máxima en el interruptor limitador ha sido
ajustada de manera de que no exceda 120F (49C).
NOTA: Los ajustes de la temperatura del agua
establecidos están basados sobre las siguients
condiciones de fábrica:
Presión del agua fría y caliente = 43,5 psi (3,05
Kg/cm)
Temperatura del agua caliente = 149F (65C)
Temperatura del agua fría = 59F (15C)
Si las condiciones del suministro de agua actuales
difieren de manera significativa de las establecidas,
puede ser necesario calibrar nuevamente la válvula.

NOTA: No gire vástago de válvula termostática de
mezclado en este momento. Si se gira el vástago de
válvula de mezclado, se alterará el ajuste de fábrica.
Abra el agua por algunos minutos y luego coloque un
termómetroenlacorrientedeagua.Silascondicionesde
suministro existentes corresponden a las condiciones de
la fábrica, la temperatura del agua debería estar
alrededor de 104F (40C). Si la temperatura del agua
no se encuentra alrededor de 104F (40C), remueva
y deseche el protector de yeso de ser el caso.
Rote lentamente el vástago de la válvula termostática,
hastaquelatemperaturadelaguaseade104F(40C).
La marca blanca en el interruptor limitador debe estar
alineadaconlamarca negra en el cuerpo de laválvulade
mezclado. De ser necesario, remueva con cuidado el
interruptor limitador del cartucho de la válvula con una
hojilladelgada,yreinstaledemaneraquelamarcablanca
esté orientada hacia arriba, tal como se requiere. El
interruptor limitador debe estar correctamente colocado,
para asegurar el ajuste de la guarnición.
No gire el vástago de válvula termostática de mezclado
después de ajustar la temperatura, hasta instalar la
guarnición de la llave de mezclado.

INSTALE LA GUARNICIÓN DE LA VÁLVULA
DE MEZCLADO - TODOSLOS MODELOS
Remueva y deseche el protector de yeso si aún se
encuentra en su lugar.
Enrosque el collarín a la válvula y asegure a mano.
Verifique que cada sello de la guarnición esté
correctamente instalado enel hoyo delchapetón. Elsello
debería estar instalado de manera que los lados planos
estén orientados hacia afuera y el lado estrecho hacia
adentro.
Remuevaelprotectordelmaterialadhesivodelempaque.
A partir de la abertura de la placa del drenaje, aplique el
materialsellantealrededordela superficie posteriordela
placa. Remueva cualquier exceso de material de sellado
para evitar que la abertura del drenaje del chapetón se
obstruya.
Desliceconcuidadoelchapetónsobreelcollarínycontra
lapared acabada.Coloqueelchapetónde maneraqueel
logotipo de “Kohler” esté hacia arriba. Fije el chapetón a
la válvula con dos tornillos.

INSTALE LA GUARNICIÓN DEL CONTROL
DE VOLUMEN -K-401
Rote la válvula de control de volumencompletamente en
sentido antihorario.
Presioneelbotóndelcontroldevolumenenelvástagode
válvuladecontroldevolumen,demaneraqueelindicador
gráfico”Off“(líneamáspequeña),estéhaciaarriba(hacia
el retén superior del chapetón), como se ilustra. Fije el
botón de control de volumen al vástago de válvula con el
tornillo.
Para llaves Redondas: Instale el empaque de anillo
delgado en la primera ranura de la perilla de control de
volumen. Encaje el anillo de asimiento no instalado en la
segunda ranura, en el botón de control de volumen.
Para llaves de Palanca: Instale el empaque de anillo en
la ranura de la perilla de control de volumen.
Para todas las llaves: Presione el tapón sobre la perilla
decontrol,demaneraqueelreténdeltapónestéalineado
con el indicador “High” en la perilla de control.
De ser necesario, aplique una pequeña cantidad de
lubricante en la pared interior del tapón para facilitar el
montaje (se ha incluido lubricante en el material de
ferretería).

COMPLETE LA INSTALACIÓN DE LA
GUARNICIÓN - TODOS LOS MODELOS
Presione el botón de la válvula de mezclado sobre el
vástago de válvula de mezclado, de manera que el botón
y la marca “104“ den hacia arriba (hacia el retén del
chapetón),comose ilustra. Verifiquequelaperillanorote
en hacia la izquierda. No presione el botón.
Cierre el agua por algunos minutos para permitir que la
temperatura se modere. Luego, utilice un termómetro
para verificar la temperatura del agua. La temperatura
debe ser de 104F (40C).
NOTA: Las válvulas de mezclado de las unidades
vendidas a escala internacional tienen la temperatura
indicada en grados centígrados.
Silatemperaturadelaguaesde104F(40C),presione
el botón y rote completamente hacia la izquierda, de
manera que la marca “120” esté hacia arriba. Verifique
nuevamente la temperatura del agua. La temperatura
ahora debe ser de 120F (49C). Gire la perilla hacia la
derecha,demaneraquela marca“104” estéhaciaarriba.
Verifique nuevamente la temperatura del agua para
verificar que aún sea de 104F (40C). Cierre el agua.
Si la temperatura del agua no concuerda con la
temperatura indicada en la perilla, repita los pasos de
calibraje de la válvula de mezclado, de acuerdo a la
sección “Ajuste de la temperatura” en la Página 16.
Fije la perilla de la válvula de mezclado al vástago de
válvula con el tornillo. Instale el empaque de anillo
delgado en la primera ranura de la perilla. Coloque el
anillo de asimiento no instalado en la segunda ranura de
la perilla.
Presione la tapa sobre la válvula, de manera que el retén
de la tapa esté alineado con la perilla. De ser necesario,
aplique una pequeña cantidad de lubricante de silicona
(incluido en el material de ferretería) en la pared interior
del tapón para facilitar el montaje.
