MAINTENANCE AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS of the ORTLES winch assembled on the
rest plates or on the STELVIO fishing pole..
The “ORTLES” winch, assembled on the rest plates or on the “STELVIO” fishing pole, supplied
with a static textile rope with 10.5 mm diameter in conformity with the norm prEN 1891, is in
conformity with the Regulation 89/392/EEC and with the norm EN 1496 as a device belonging to
the class B.

NOTE
NOTE:Your life depends on your equipment. The user must know the story of his equipment (use,
storage, controls). If the equipment is not for one’s personal use (e.g. mountain centres, clubs,
rescue stations etc.), we strongly suggest that the pre-use controls are carried out by an expert
and qualified person and that they are recorded in the control charts given in the following. No
responsibility for damages, wounds or death caused by wrongful use, nor for items which have
been modified or repaired by non-authorized persons will be assumed by Kong S.p.A.
Before using any new device Kong S.p.A. suggest to carry out accurate practical tests in order
to get a good knowledge of them and to verify in advance their perfect suitability for the specific
use they have been designed for. As a matter of fact, neither the instructions nor the laboratory
tests can reproduce all possible conditions of employment in case of rescue or emergency.
We pay great attention to the resistance of all the anchor devices, whether they are natural or
not, because they can not be guaranteed and therefore we need the opinion of expert users to
achieve a fair safety. Please remember that the position of the anchor devices is very important,
because it must guarantee the motionlessness of these devices when they work under stress.

correct use of any Kong items
MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE
No maintenance is required. The user has just to clean the device as explained in the following.
1) CLEANING: In case of dirt, wash with lukewarm drinking water (max 40°) adding a delicate
cleansing product, if necessary (mild soap). The cleaning after the use in saline environments
is particularly recommended. The drying must take place far from any source of heat.
2) DISINFECTION: Let the cloth soak in lukewarm water (max 20°) with the addition of a
disinfectant, then wash it with drinking water.
3) STORAGE: After cleaning and drying the device put it in its rucksack in a dry, cool and dark
place (avoid ultraviolet radiation), which must be chemically neutral (avoid saline environments
definitely), far from sharp corners, sources of heat, humidity, corroding substances or other
possible harmful conditions. Do not store wet!!
4) LUBRICATION: If necessary, lubricate by using an oil containing silicone.
Rest plates and pole: oil the screws of the fastening hand levers and the threaded bushes.
Ortles winch: oil the mechanism of the rope blocking device. Never remove the winch drum
(in case of problems contact Kong or the authorized dealer).

The life time of these devices is technically unlimited, provided that after an extended use, and
in any case at least every two years, they are overhauled by persons authorized by Kong. The
details of the overhaul must be written on the chart.
Please take care of these devices and use them very carefully. It is not just you but also the
people you are rescuing who rely on them.
If used correctly and carefully they will give you the reliability you require. As for safety, the use
of a second rope makes the operation extremely safe and the joint knots make this technology
safer than any other steel cable technology employing, for example, quick links. The weight, the
easy assembling, the operation speed, the removal or reduction of the frictions, the possibility
to change the present technologies put these devices among the best available to the rescue
organizations.
REST PLATES
The two rest plates for the Ortles winch are made of folded aluminium alloy. A number of holes
of different diameter allows to fasten them to the ground by means of nails or the like. They
are equipped with two screws with hand levers and two threaded bushes for firmly and safely
fastening the winch (picture 1). They weigh about 5 kg and their size is 60x30x20.

ASSEMBLY OF THE ORTLES WINCH ON THE REST PLATES
A) Position the right plate upside-down with the threaded bushes upwards (picture 2).
B) Position the plate with the winch downwards and insert it in the two threaded bushes
(picture 3).
C) Now lay the left plate matching the holes with the bushes (picture 4).
D) Insert the crank screws screwing them tight but without forcing too much (picture 5).
The gripping levers can be released from the screws by axially pulling them: this allows their
turning in the most comfortable position (picture 6).
If possible (unlike the fishing pole), place the winch with the rest plates at 3/5 meters from the
wall edge so as to have the largest possible room for operating it (picture 7).

Stelvio Fishing Pole
The fishing pole Stelvio, to be used together with the Ortles winch, can be placed on the
rock or crack edge allowing the recovery or the dropping of the load directly in the empty
space, thus avoiding any rope scratching on the rock or on the ice, which would cause
dangerous frictions.
The Stelvio fishing pole is a tubular rod made of light aluminium alloy. It weighs 8 kg, is 2 m
long and can be disassembled into two pieces. The sack supplied with it allows to carry it also
on one’s back. The pole is fastened through an universal joint to a small-size punched plate
for fastening it to the ground. The tab on the rest plate can be used, inserting a snaplink, for
sending back the rope during the recovery operation.
The articulated joint allows the pole
to move 120° forward and backward
(picture 8).
The two punched flanges at the upper end of the pole allow the insertion of the snaplinks for
the holding ropes. The Ortles winch is fastened to the pole by means of two screws with hand
levers and two threaded bushes as for the rest plates (picture 9).

ASSEMBLY OF THE ORTLES WINCH ON THE FISHING POLE
First of all assemble the two pieces of the pole by inserting them one in the other. Then insert the
Ortles winch plate in the two fixed tongues in the lower sector where the hole is placed (picture
10), insert the screw with the hand lever in the threaded bush (slightly move the plate to make
the going in easier), screw two or three turns. Do the same in the two upper tongues, then screw
tight without forcing too much (picture 11).
After assembling the Ortles winch, position the pole so that its upper end is as close to the vertical
of the dropping point as possible in order to avoid dangerous oscillations during the dropping or
the rescue. Now the winch is ready for being fastened to the ground through appropriate anchor
devices (screw anchors, nails etc.).
A special larger-size plate can be combined with the small plate in case of soft ground, such as
snow, meadow etc. (picture 12).

After fastening the pole to the ground connect two holding ropes in the end holes of the upper
plate by means of two snaplinks.
These ropes must be fastened to suitable anchor devices (natural or artificial), which must be
placed so as to form a 60° angle approx. (picture 13).
If two ropes should not guarantee a correct stretching and fastening connect to the pole upper
end more ropes so as to brace it firmly.
NOTE: The stretching of the pole must be carried out by expert and experienced persons.
After anchoring the ropes have the pole cantilever as much as required. Now the pole is fastened
but it is better to load it to subject the ropes to tension and find the right position.
To stretch the pole we suggest to use the Poldo tackle. This knot (of nautical origin) is very useful
because it allows to easily make the ropes longer or shorter even when they are on load
(pictures 14/15).

ARGANO ORTLES
It is supplied with a 75x35x25 cm rucksack which can contain also the two plates.
Weight of the winch alone: 8 kg.
The Ortles is composed of a plate made of aluminium alloy with holes for inserting the anchor
snaplinks, two speeds winding winch for textile ropes only complete with self-tailing, two hand
levers for operating it, a fixed ascender and another one with sewn tape, and a rope guide pulley
with ball bearing (picture 16).
The clockwise rotation gives a 1:6 ratio (one drum turn = six hand lever turns), the power is 1:39
(1 kg force applied to the hand lever allows to lift 39 kg weight). Normally used when the weight
to be lifted is considerable. The counterclockwise rotation gives a 1:2 ratio and the power is 1:13.
To be used when the weight to be lifted is lighter. Higher speed = bigger stress. A drum turn
(360°) corresponds to 26 cm recovered rope. The Ortles winch has been designed and tested
(assembled both on the fishing pole and on the rest plates) for dropping or lifting two persons
at the same time; standard weight 200 kg (factor of safety and inspection 1:10 under static
conditions and 1:1.5 for the functionality). The winch can be used under the climatic conditions
normally borne by the man, which are in conformity with the norm prEN 1891 and have an
elongation factor type A, with static textile ropes of emergency with dynamic ropes always CE
certified. The static acceptance tests have been carried out by wrapping around the winch drum
5 rope turns. The user can operate the winch only after self-insuring himself by his own means
(not supplied with this device). These means shall be assigned to this specific function and in
conformity with the specific national or European regulations.
OPERTATING INSTRUCTIONS OF THE ORTLES WINCH
The operating instructions concerns the employment of a rope only. We strongly suggest that for
any rescue operation a second rope is available for safety’s sake.
The described procedures are carried out with the Ortles winch assembled on the shing pole
but they are exactly the same when the winch is assembled on the rest plates.

Pass the rope under the winch (picture 18) and wind it up clockwise (alt least 4 turns) around
the drum, then pass it on the arm and insert it in the self-tailing.
The rope must make a complete turn in it.
After winding up the rope on the Ortles insert the hand levers in the winch by operating the little
lever on the upper end of the shaft to mate the safety board.
Insert and then release the locking lever (picture 20).
Now you can begin the recovery operation. When the rope is stretched it will coil on the
winch.
While a rescuer guides and slightly stretches the rope coming out of the self-tailing and sends
it back in the rest plate tab through a snaplink (picture 21) making sure it does not tangle nor is
trampled on, one or more operators operate the hand lever for the rescue.

FROM RECOVERY TO DROPPING
Pull the rope out of the self-tailing, take one or two rope turns off the drum (depending on
the hanging load): the rope will slide one or two centimetres until it locks in the ascender
(picture 23).
Now drop, keeping the ascender teeth open by means of the cable.
NOTE: Do not open the teeth releasing the safety lever completely and do not put your finger
in the cable eyelet (picture 24). During the dropping an operator must engage just in keeping
the teeth lifted through the opening cable by using two fingers only, so that he can let it go
immediately if necessary (picture 25).

The dropping operation is carried out by sliding the rope on the drum. The dropping speed
depends on the number of turns on the drum and on the tension of the rope (we suggest
the use of gloves) (picture 26).
NOTE:
During the dropping of one or more rescuers do not
exaggerate the dropping speed to avoid the overhea-
ting of the winch drum, which can endanger the rope
efficiency when the dropping comes to a stop.
During the dropping operations it may be advantage-
ous to take off the right hand lever (mind where you
put it) to make the operations which will follow on this
side easier, considering that limited tugs can be made
only with the left hand lever.
Each rescue team should be equipped with ropes
which are long enough; anyway it is possible to pass
the jointing knot of two ropes on the Ortles winch
during both the recovery and the dropping.
For the rope jointing we suggest the knot shown in the picture (or the guide knot) (picture 27).

PASSING OF THE KNOT DURING THE DROPPING
Let the rope slide until the knot passes through the operator’s hands and begins to turn
on the drum.
Just before the knot comes to the ascender called “A” at about 10 cm (picture 28) release the
safety cable and lock the rope stopping the dropping.
Now position the second ascender called “B” (picture 29), with snaplinks and tape (supplied)
to be hooked in one of the plate holes. This ascender must be placed on the rope at about
10 cm over the ascender “A” (picture 29).
Hold the rope tight by the hands, regain one
or two centimetres rope through the hand
lever to release the ascender “A” and open
it wide (picture 30).

Pull the rope tight out of the ascender and drop until the knot passes over the ascender
“A” (picture 31).
Insert the dropping rope in the ascender “A” again and close it (picture 32), drop until it locks,
take the ascender “B” off the rope, give a hand lever blow to unlock the ascender “A” again and
keep on dropping keeping the ascender safety always lifted with two fingers (picture 33).
PASSING OF THE KNOT DURING THE RECOVERY
When the knot comes at about 10 cm from the ascender “A” (picture 34), place the ascender
“B” above the knot as far as possible (stretched tape) (picture 35). Open the ascender “A” wide,
pull the rope tight out of it and begin the recovery keeping the ascender “B” still with a hand
until the knot passes over the ascender “A” (picture 36).

Insert the rope in the ascender “A” again and close it (picture 37), take off the ascender “B”
and keep on recovering slowly. The knot will turn on the winch drum (picture 38); when it
comes close to the arm, further reduce the recovery speed until the knot passes through the
self-tailing. Now keep on recovering normally.
Pay great attention to the passing of the knot on the winch drum and through the self-tailing
keeping the two ends of the knot lifted outside the turns and guided by hand picture 39).
NOTE: Never come with the jointing knot
against the winch ascender!
This would prevent the opening and unlocking
(picture 40).
