K-Sync
TheK-SyncSynchronizingUnitprovideshighlycongurabletimingofpingingwhen
multipleechosoundersareemployedonavessel.
TheSynchronizingUnitoptimizesthetimingofeachtransmit.Optimaltimingensures
thatechosoundersthatmayinterferewitheachotherdonottransmitconcurrently,which
couldresultinacousticinterferenceanddegradeddata.TheSynchronizingUnitprovides
simpleyetexiblecontrolofscheduling.Thetriggerschedulecanbetailoredtothe
particulartypeofsurveyanddesireddatadensitycollectedbyeachsystem.Anyecho
sounderthathasatriggerinputcanbeexternallytriggeredbytheSynchronizingUnit.

TheK-SyncApplicationprovidestheuserinterface,whichallowsmonitoringofstatus,
modifyingsettings,triggerscheduleaswellasperformingdiagnostics.Theapplication
needstorunandbeconnectedtotheSynchronizingUnitinorderforthesystemto
initializeandbeoperational.However,oncethesystemisrunning,theapplicationcan
beshutdownanddisconnectedwhiletheSynchronizingUnitcontinuestocontrol
thetriggeringofechosounders.Theechosoundersareinterfaceddirectlytothe
SynchronizingUnitasdepictedingureThecompletesynchronizingsystemonpage8
NetworkInterface

TheSynchronizingUnitcanutilizefeedbacksignalsfromechosoundersinorderto
performoptimalsynchronization.
Feedbacksignalsarenotrequired,butshouldbeusedwhenavailable.Iffeedback
signalsarenotavailable,theoperatorcanestimatethewaitingperiodrequiredforthe
echosoundertobecomeready.
ConceptofOperation
TheSynchronizingUnitschedulestheechosounderstotransmitaccordingtotrigger
groups.Thereareatotalof16triggergroupsandanynumberofechosounders(or
none)canbeassignedtoagroup.Eachgroupistriggeredconsecutively,whiletheecho
soundersassignedtoagrouparetriggeredtogether.Onceitisdetermined(byreading
feedbacksignals)orestimated(basedonusersettings)thatallechosoundersinthe
currentgrouphavecompletedtheirpingcycle,thenthenextgroupistriggered.All
groupsaretriggeredinround-robinfashion.Thedurationofeachgroupisnotxedand
dependsuponwhatthemaximumactiveperiodisfortheechosoundersinthatgroup.
Echosounderscanbetakenoutoftheschedulewithoutchangingthegroupschedule,
simplybydisablingthem.Ifagroupdoesnotcontainanyavailableechosounders,
thenthatgroupisskipped.
Ifthereadytotransmitfeedbacksignalisavailable,thenthedurationoftheactiveperiod
isaslongasthetimeittakesforthesignaltobecomeactiveaftertheechosounder
hasbeentriggered.
Ifthetransmittingfeedbacksignalisavailable,theSynchronizingUnitwillautomatically
checkthatatransmitoccurredaftereachtrigger.Iftheechosounderfailstotransmit
threetimesinarow,itisassumedthatithasbeenturnedoffanditisthentakenoutof
theschedule.
ItispossibletoignorethefeedbacksignalsbyspecifyingeitherCalculatedorFixed
Periodtriggermodes(seesectionTriggerModesonpage44).

WorkstationSetup
SetupofWorkstationincludescongurationofthenetworkcardandinstallingthe
Workstationsoftware.
NetworkConguration
TheIPaddressoftheSynchronizingUnitisbydefault157.237.60.169withasubnet
maskof255.255.240.0.Itishighlyrecommendedtousethiscongurationtomake
anypossiblefuturetroubleshootingorsupporteasier.Ifitisnecessarytochangethe
IPaddressinordertobetterworkwithexistingnetworkinfrastructure,thenetwork
congurationcanbemodied(seeInstallationManual).TheIPaddressthattheK-Sync
ApplicationexpectstondtheK-SyncatcanbefoundintheSystemSettingsdialog
intheapplication.
ItisrecommendedthattheWorkstationhasadedicatednetworkinterfacetoconnect
withtheSynchronizingUnit,especiallyiftheWorkstationissimultaneouslyusedfor
otherpurposes.Adedicatednetworkconnectionwillensurethatdisplaysandcontrols
areresponsiveandhaveminimallatency.

Howtoinstalltheapplication
1RuntheSetup.exelefromtheK-SyncInstallationCD.
2Followtheinstallationsetupprompts.
Caution
AlwayspoweruptheSynchronizingUnitbeforeechosoundersareturnedon
toavoidaccidentalpinging.Triggeroutputsareundenedduringpower-up
(rst20seconds)andsignallevelscouldpotentiallybeinterpretedastrigger
pulsebytheechosoundersuntilsignallevelshavesettled.
Properinstallationcanbeveriedby:
1Makesureechosoundersareturnedofforatleastpinging/externaltriggeristurned
offtoavoidanyspurioustriggeringduringpower-up.
2TurnonthepowertotheSynchronizingUnit.
3Opentheapplication(Startmenu→AllPrograms→KongsbergMaritime→K-Sync
ApplicationontheWorkstation.
4Oncethatapplicationhasstarted,thestatusintheapplicationwindowwillindicate
whetheraconnectionhasbeenestablishedwiththeSynchronizingUnitwithin
about10seconds.
Note
TheuserinterfacewillbegrayedoutwhenevertheK-SyncApplicationisunableto
communicatewiththesynchronizingunit.

CongurationoftheSynchronizingUnitisperformedonceinstallationhasbeen
completedasdescribedinthepreviouschapter.
Thesystemandinstallationsettingsareprimarilyconguredduringinitialinstallation.
Theinstallationsettingsspecifywhichechosoundersystemsareinstalledandhowthe
signalinterfaceinterpretsandgeneratesindividualtriggersignals.Thesystemsettings
congurethedepthinputandsoundspeed.Allsettingsarepermanentlystoredonthe
WorkstationanduploadedtotheSynchronizingUniteachtimeaconnectionismade
afterpower-up.
Systemsettings
Systemsettingsdialogpermitsmodicationofsettingsrelatedtoexternaldepthand
soundspeedusedfortraveltimecalculations.
TheSynchronizingUnitiscapableofreceivingexternaldepthdatagramssentover
Ethernet.ThesettingsfordeningUDPreceiveportanddatagramtypesareavailablein
theSystemSettingsdialog.ClickonSettingsfromtheapplicationmenuandselectSystem
settings…toopentheSystemSettingsdialog.
Soundspeedisusedforestimationoftraveltime.Ifanyoftheechosoundershave
triggermodesettocalculated,thenanapproximatesoundspeedmustbeentered.

TheSynchronizingunitIPaddressisenteredintheSystemsettingsdialog.Thissetting
mustmatchtheIPaddressofthesynchronizingunitfortheapplicationtoconnect.
TheIPaddressofthesynchronizingunitisspeciedhere.Thisaddressshould
normallybe157.237.60.169,unlessthesynchronizingunitIPwassetdifferentlyduring
installation(seeInstallationManual).AfterchangingtheIPaddressintheK-Sync
application,theapplicationshouldberestartedandoneshouldverifythatcommunication
withsynchronizingunitisfunctioning(LEDinsystemcontrolturnsgreenoryellow).
Depthdatagraminput
TheSynchronizingUnitcanreceivedepthdatafromexternalsources.Depthdataissent
asdatagramsdirectlytotheSynchronizingUnit.
Inordertoreceivedepthexternally,anetworkswitchmustbeinterfacedbetweenthe
WorkstationandtheSynchronizingUnitasthelatterhasonlyoneEthernetconnection.
TheUDPreceiveportforreceivingdepthdatagramscanbemodiedtoanyvalueequal
orgreaterthan1024andlessthan65535.

Estimationoftraveltime
TheSystemsoundspeedsettingisusedforroundtriptimecalculationwhentheoperating
modeforanechosounderissettocalculated.Sincethesettingonlyaffectstiming
estimates,itisnotcriticalforthevaluetobecontinuouslyupdatedorbeexact.Thevalue
shouldbeanaverageoftheproledowntobottom.Iftheglobalmeanofthesound
speedisknown,thatvaluecanbeused.

Triggerstatusfromsynchronizingunitcanbeprovidedtoothermultibeamworkstations
runningKongsbergsoftware.Thisrequiresthat:

GenerateK-Syncstatusdatagram:NocongurationisnecessaryintheSISsoftware.
ByenablingthestatusdatagramintheK-SyncStatustab,thestatusisforwardedto
theSISworkstation.
TheDestinationIPaddressmustbesettotheIPofSISworkstationandDestination
portmustbesetto4002.
WhentheSISsoftwarereceivesthestatus,thetriggereventofeachechosounderis
shownonthebottomofthenumericaldisplayasseparateLEDsinreal-time(seegure
K-SyncstatusSIS4onpage18).Thisfeatureensuresthatthesynchronizingunitis
triggeringeachenabledechosounderastheoperatorcaneasilynoticeifasystemhas
timedoutwhilesurveying.
K-SyncstatusisshownatthebottomofthenumericaldisplayinSIS.Thetermsseenin
theK-SyncApplicationwindowareinparenthesis.

InstallationSettings
Thissectiondiscussestheinstallationsettingsandisapplicabletoinitialinstallationand
whenaddingandremovingechosoundersatalatertime.Normally,itshouldnotbe
necessarytochangeexistingsettingsunlesstimingorsignalcharacteristicshavechanged
foraparticularechosounder(e.g.duetoanupgradeofechosounder).
InstallationsettingsareaccessedfromtheapplicationmenuunderSettings→Installation
→Installationsettings.Afterstartingtheapplicationtheoptionisgrayedoutuntilthe
menuitemAllowmodicationisselectedandcorrectpasswordisprovided.
