Placement
Before installing the KID into your system, please
review the following guidelines to choose the
proper location for the KID. This will facilitate a
clean, trouble-free installation.
Place the KID on a firm, level surface, away from
excessive heat, humidity, or moisture. The KID
does not require any type of special rack or cabi-
net for installation.
The measurements of the KID are:
13 W X 2.8 H X 10.9 D in
33 W X 7 H X 27.7 D cm
The KID requires the following clearance for ade-
quate ventilation:
— at least eight inches (20 cm) above (to
accommodate the iPod-device)
The ventilation grids, on the bottom of the KID
chassis, must be unobstructed.
If the KID is placed in a closed cabinet, more than
eight inches (20 cm) of clearance may need to be
provided above and below the component, or
small fans may be needed to increase ventilation.
The air space between the chassis and shelf must
be unobstructed.

The KID remote control uses one CR2025 lithium
battery which is included with the shipment.
To open the battery compartment on the back of
the remote control:
1. Place the remote face down on the table.
2. Use your thumbnail or a small jeweler’s or eye-
glass screwdriver to move the small tab
toward the center of the remote, while using
your index fingernail or screwdriver to pull
down gently on the slot to the right of the tab.
The battery compartment will slide out.
3. Place the battery plus side up in the battery tray.
T
o prepare the KID for operation, follow the con-
necting sequence below:
1. Install the batteries in the remote. (This page.)
2. Connect the KID to your system and plug the
KID into AC power. (This page.)
4. Insert the ipod-device in the KID docking station.
(Next page.)
4. Slide battery compartment back into the
remote until you hear a click.
The remote control is ready for operation.
Note. Do not use a knife or other sharp objects to
open the battery compartment; to avoid scratching
the remote control finish.
Note. Replace batteries when remote control func-
tion becomes intermittent. Remove batteries if the
remote control is not to be used for a long period
of time. Battery leakage can damage the remote
control.

BATTERY INSTALLATION
AND REMOVAL
INSTALLATION / CONNECTION
OVERVIEW
Krell
Connecting
Battery Installation
The KID connects to a preamplifier, processor, or
amplifier as an A/V source. In addition, it connects to
the Krell PAPA Dock, a 150 W amplifier specifically
designed for the Krell KID. The KID is equipped with
a balanced and single-ended analog audio output,
as well as an S-video and a composite video output.
Follow these steps to connect the KID to your sys-
tem:
1. Make sure all power sources and components
are off before connecting inputs and outputs.
2. Neatly arrange and organize wiring between the
KIDand all system components. Separate AC
wires from audio cables to prevent hum or other
unwanted noise from being introduced into the
system.
3. Remember that balanced outputs use three-pin
XLR connectors. Single-ended outputs use
RCA connectors. Maintain the correct left/right
orientation.
4. Connect the balanced or single-ended analog
audio outputs to the corresponding inputs on
the preamplifer or processor, or to the amplifier
in your system.
5. Connect the S-video or composite output to
the corresponding input on the monitor in your
system.
6. Plug the AC power cord into the IEC power
connector on the back panel. Then plug the AC
power cord into the wall socket.
CONNECTION STEPS
Krell recommends using balanced interconnect
cables. Balanced interconnect cables not only
can minimize sonic loss but also are immune to
induced noise, especially for installations using
long cables. Balanced connections have 6 dB
more gain than single-ended connections. When
level matching is critical, keep this specification in
mind. Krell recommends using balanced inputs for
components that use the preamplifier mode.

Krell 9
Krell
Operating
The Krell KID will self-center and self-adjust for an
iPod-device conforming to the iPod-device 3G,
4G, Photo, or 5G mechanical specifications. With
the KID plugged into AC power:
1. Hold the iPod-device close to a 16 degree
angle, referenced to the top horizontal surface
of the KID.
2. Set the iPod-device in the center of the dock so
it is resting on top of the four acrylic rollers.
When the KID is in stand-by mode, it will charge
the iPod-device battery, if the iPod device is con-
nected to the KID via the docking station (1).
3. Push down on the top of the iPod-device so it
positions itself inside the four rollers and onto
the connector.
Power LED Color Guide
When the KID is plugged into AC power, the power
LED illuminates:
Red The KID is in stand-by mode.
Blue The KID is on, in the operational
mode, indicating that an iPod-device
is connected.
Purple The KID is on, in the operational
mode, and an iPod-device is not
connected.

AUDIO OUTPUT CONNECTIONS
Balanced
A symmetrical input or output circuit that has equal
impedance from both input terminals to a common
ground reference point. The industry standard for
professional and sound recording installations, bal-
anced connections have 6 dB more gain than sin-
gle-ended connections, and allow the use of long
interconnect cables. Bal-anced connections are
completely immune to induced noise from the sys-
tem or the environment.
Single-ended
A two-wire input or output circuit. Use care when
using single-ended connections as the ground con-
nection is made last and broken first. Turn the sys-
tem off prior to making or breaking single-ended
connections. Single-ended connections are not rec-
ommended for connections requiring long cable
runs.
VIDEO OUTPUT CONNECTIONS
S-Video Signal
An analog video signal that carries the video data as
two separate signals (brightness and color).
Composite Video Signal
An analog video signal that carries the entire set of
video signals in one signal line.
The following are definitions of key terms used in
this owner’s reference.
OPERATION
Off
The component is off when the AC power cord is
unplugged from the wall receptacle.
Stand-by Mode
A low power consumption status that keeps the
audio and regulator circuits at idle. When the KID is
in stand-by mode, the power LED (2) illuminates in
red. Krell recommends leaving the component in the
stand-by mode when it is not playing music.
Operational Mode
The component is in the operational mode when it
is ready to play music. In the operational mode,
The power LED (2) on the KID illuminates in blue
when the IPod-device is in the docking station (1).
The power LED illuminates in purple, when a device
is attached to the aux input (6).
