Big Ben
Big Ben, officially known as the Clock Tower, has stood at the
north-eastern corner of the Palace of Westminster for over 150
years. It’s one of the most recognized landmarks in the world
today, and has become an iconic symbol of both London and
England. The story of its design and construction provides a
fascinating glimpse into one of the most interesting periods
of architectural history.
Big Ben, connue officiellement comme la Tour de l’Horloge, est
située dans le coin nord-est du Palais de Westminster depuis
plus de 150 ans. Il s’agit aujourd’hui de l’un des monuments
les plus célèbres du monde, qui est devenu un symbole

History
When the old Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire
on the 16th of October 1834, a competition was announced
for the design of a new palace building. Over 97 entries
were received and in January 1836, it was announced that
the competition had been won by the 40 year-old English
architect Charles Barry. His initial design, in the modern
Neo-Gothic style, was only two-thirds the size of the
completed building and was without the 96.3 meter (316 ft)
Clock Tower that would become known as Big Ben.
As Barry’s own architectural style was more Classical than
Gothic, he asked for assistance from one of the leading
lights of the neo-gothic movement, Augustus Pugin. While
it is difficult to say exactly what work can be accredited to
Pugin, it’s commonly thought that he created much of the
gothic-styled interiors of the palace and the design of the
clock tower itself.
Neither man would live to see the completion of their work.

The design of the clock mechanism would also set
new standards in the field of clock making and add
further complications to the construction process. After a
competition, the task was given to Edward John
Dent (1790-1853) in February 1852 and he set about
designing a mechanism that would live up to the then unheard
demands that the first stroke of each hour should be accurate
to within one second. It took seven years before the clock
began keeping time on 31st May 1859; the construction
of the tower itself was delayed, Dent passed away, and
modifications had to be made when it was discovered that
the clock mechanism was larger than the actual space allowed.
Big Ben was the unofficial name given to the tower’s
Great Bell. It was the largest bell in the Britain at the time
and named after either Sir Benjamin Hall, the first Works
Commissioner, or Ben Caunt, a champion heavyweight
boxer. The first Great Bell was cast in Stockton-on-Tees and
transported to London by rail and see. Huge crowds gathered
to watch it being pulled across Westminster Bridge by 16 white
horses. During tests, however, a crack appeared and a new
Great Bell had to be cast. Though this one would eventually
also develop a crack, successful repairs and a lighter
hammer have ensured that it still rings out the time today.
The Neo-Gothic heritage of the Clock Tower is particularly
emphasized by the ornate decorations of its upper floors and
the clock dials. Each dial is seven meters (23 ft) in diameter
and made from cast iron and 312 separate pieces of pot opal
glass. Once every five years, specialist technicians abseil
down the dials to carry out cleaning and essential repairs.
The clock mechanism is wound by hand three times a week
and is still as accurate today as when it was constructed over
150 years ago. Although Big Ben is one of the most famous
tourist attractions, it’s not open to overseas visitors. Residents
of the United Kingdom are able to visit the tower after arrange-
ment with their local Member of Parliament.

Lorsque l’ancien Palais de Westminster fut détruit par un incen-
die le 16 octobre 1834, un concours fut lancé pour la création
d’un nouveau palais. Plus de 97 participations furent reçues et
le résultat fut annoncé en janvier 1836 : le concours avait été
remporté par un architecte anglais de 40 ans, Charles Barry. Sa
création initiale, dans le style néogothique moderne, ne faisait
que les deux-tiers du bâtiment terminé, et ne contenait pas la
Tour de l’horloge de 96,3 m qui allait prendre le nom de Big Ben.
Le style architectural de Barry étant plus classique que gothique,
il demanda l’aide de l’une des plus grandes lumières du mou-
vement néo-gothique, Augustus Pugin. S’il est difficile de dire
exactement quelle part du travail peut être attribuée à Pugin, on
pense généralement qu’il créa une grande partie des intérieurs
de style gothique du Palais et la Tour de l’Horloge elle-même.
Les deux hommes moururent avant de pouvoir voir leur travail
achevé. Leurs créations élaborées entrainèrent de nombreuses
difficultés de construction, ajoutant une décennie à la durée
de construction estimée à six ans et triplant le budget initial.

La conception du mécanisme de l’horloge allait aussi imposer
de nouvelles normes dans le domaine de l’horlogerie et ajouter
des complications supplémentaires au processus de construc-
tion. Suite à un concours, la tâche fut confiée à Edward John
Dent (1790-1853) en février 1852, et il commença à créer un
mécanisme capable de répondre à une exigence jusqu’alors
inédite : le premier coup de chaque heure devait être précis
à une seconde près. Il fallut sept ans avant que l’horloge ne
commence à marquer l’heure le 31 mai 1859. La construction
de la Tour fut retardée, Dent mourut et des modifications durent
être effectuées lorsqu’il fut découvert que le mécanisme de
l’horloge était plus grand que l’espace alloué.
Big Ben était le nom officieux donnée à la grande cloche de
la tour. C’était la plus grande cloche de Grande-Bretagne à
l’époque, nommée soit d’après Sir Benjamin Hall, le premier
Commissaire des travaux, soit d’après Ben Caunt, un champion
de boxe poids lourd. La première grande cloche fut fondue à
Stockton-on-Tees et transportée à Londres par train et par mer.
Une foule énorme se rassembla pour la voir tirée sur le pont
de Westminster par 16 chevaux blancs. Mais une fêlure apparut
pendant les tests et une nouvelle grosse cloche dut être fondue.
Cette dernière souffrit aussi une fêlure, mais des réparations
réussies et un marteau plus léger lui permettent de continuer
à sonner l’heure aujourd’hui.
L’héritage néo-gothique de la Tour de l’Horloge est particuliè-
rement souligné par les décorations élaborées de ses étages
supérieurs et des cadrans de l’horloge. Chaque cadran mesure
sept mètres de diamètre et est fabriqué en fonte, avec 312
morceaux de verre opale. Tous les cinq ans, des techniciens
spécialisés descendent les cadrans pour effectuer un nettoyage
et des réparations essentielles.
Le mécanisme de l’horloge est remonté à la main trois fois par
semaine et est toujours aussi précis aujourd’hui que lors de sa
construction il y a plus de 150 ans. Même si Big Ben est l’une des
attractions touristiques les plus célèbres, elle n’est pas ouverte
aux visiteurs étrangers. Les résidents du Royaume-Uni peuvent
visiter la tour en le demandant auprès de leur député local.

Construction
The foundation stone for the Clock Tower was laid on the
28th of September 1843 and it wouldn’t be completed until
1859; five years behind schedule. The Clock Tower was built
from the inside outwards, meaning that no scaffolding was
ever visible to the outside world.
The bottom 61 meters (200 ft) of the 96.3 meters (316 ft) high
Clock Tower consists of brickwork with sand colored Anston
limestone cladding. The remainder of the tower’s height
is made up of a framed spire of cast iron. The tower was
founded on a 15-metre (49 ft) square raft of 3-metre (9.8 ft)
thick concrete, at a depth of 4 meters (13 ft) below ground
level. On its completion, the interior volume of the tower was
4,650 cubic meters (164,200 cubic feet).
When it was time to raise the Great Bell, it was discovered
that its dimensions meant it was too large to fit up the Clock
Tower’s shaft vertically, so Big Ben was turned on its side
and winched that way. It took 30 hours to lift the bell to the
belfry in October 1858.

Over 150 years later the tower stands as a testament to solid
architectural design and ingenious engineering. Changes
in ground conditions, especially tunneling for the London
Underground, means that today the tower leans slightly to
the north-west by approximately 22 cm (8.66 inches) at the
clock dials.

La première pierre de la Tour de l’Horloge fut posée le 28 sep-
tembre 1843 et elle ne fut terminée qu’en 1859, avec cinq ans
de retard. La Tour de l’Horloge fut construite de l’intérieur vers
l’extérieur, ce qui signifie qu’aucun échafaudage ne fut visible.
Les 61 mètres du bas de la Tour de l’horloge haute de 96,3
mètres sont construits en briques avec un revêtement en pierre
d’Anston de couleur sable. Le reste de la tour est composé
d’une aiguille en fonte. La tour fut placée sur un bloc de béton
de 15 mètres carrés épais de 3 mètres à une profondeur de 4
mètres sous terre. Lorsqu’elle fut terminée, le volume intérieur
de la tour était de 4650 mètres cubes.
Lorsque le moment fut venu de hisser la grosse cloche, on
découvrit qu’elle était trop grande pour monter dans la tour
verticalement. Big Ben fut donc tournée sur le côté et hissée
de cette façon. Il fallut 30 heures pour soulever la cloche
jusqu’au clocher en octobre 1858.
