Chapter1.Introduction
ThankyoufororderingandusingThinkServerRemoteManagementModule,hereinafterreferredtoas
RemoteManagementModule.
TheUserGuidedescribeshowtousetheRemoteManagementModule,theoverviewofthemodulefeatures
andhowtosetupandoperatethemodule.
TheUserGuideisforsystemadministratorsresponsibleforinstallation,troubleshooting,upgradeand
maintenanceoftheRemoteManagementModule.Asasystemadministrator,onceyouarefamiliarwith
theGuideyoucanuseRemoteManagementModuletoaccessremotelyfromanylocationtorespondfor
emergency.

thepoweroutlet.Whenopeningthechassistoinstallorremovetheparts,youshouldmakesurethe
ACpowercordhasbeendisconnected.
Dangeroussituations,equipmentandcables:Power,telephonesandsignalcablesmayhavethe
dangerofelectricshock.Beforeopeningthedevice,shutdowntheserver,disconnectedthepowercord,
thecommunicationsystem,networkandmodemconnectedtotheserver.Otherwise,itmayresultin
personalinjuryorequipmentdamage.
ElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)andESDprotection:ElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)candamagedisk

onlyintheESDprotectiveworkstations.IfESDworkstationisunavailable,pleasewearanti-staticwriststrap
whileholdingpartsandconnectthewriststraptothegroundwire(thatis,anyunpaintedmetalsurface)
oftheserverchassistoprovideESDprotection.
ESDandholdingsystemboards:Becarefulwhenholdingthesystemboard.Theyareextremely
sensitivetoESD.Onlytouchtheedgewhenholdingthesystemboard.Laythesystemboardwith
componentssidefacingupwardsaftertakingthesystemboardoutoftheprotectionbagorthesever.
Usetheconductivefoampad(ifany)ratherthanthesystemboardpackage.Donotslidethesystem
boardonanysurface.
Installingorremovingjumper:Jumperisasmallplasticconductorbetweentwojumperpins.
Somejumpershaveasmallwingonthetopforyoutousengertipsorneneedleforcepstoclipit.If
thejumperhasnosuchwing,becarefulwheninstallingorremovingitwithneedleforceps,andclipthe
jumper'snarrowfaceinsteadofthewideone.Clippingthewidefacewilldamagethecontactsinsidethe
jumper,whichwillleadtointermittentfaultstosomefunctionscontrolledbythejumper.Clipthejumper
carefullywithpliersorothertoolsanddonotsqueezewhenremovingit.Otherwise,pinsonthesystem
boardmaybebentorbroken.

ThissectionbrieydescribesthefeaturesoftheRemoteManagementModule.
TheRemoteManagementModulerunsontheserversystemasanintegratedsolutionandintegrates
theembeddedoperatingsystem.Independentoftheserveroperatingsystem,theembeddedoperating
systemcanprovideawholesetofcomplete,stableandeffectivesolutionfortheserver.Asasystem
administrator,youcanrespondanytimeandanywheretoemergencyfailureandtakeremotecontrolon
theserverthroughthenetwork.

ThinkServerRemoteManagementModuleiseasilyaccessiblebyremoteKVMandcontrollableviaLAN
orInternet.Itwilldigitizeandcompressthecollectedvideosignal,keyboard,mousesignalsandthen
sendtotheremoteconsole.Embeddedwithremoteaccessandrelatedcontrolsoftware,themodule

ThissectiondescribeshowtousetheservercongurationutilitytochangetheRemoteManagementModule
fromtheun-conguredstatustotherunningstatus.Whenrstinstalled,theRemoteManagementModule
bydefaultwillsearchDHCPserveronthenetworktoautomaticallyassignIPaddress,subnetmaskand
gateway.ItisrecommendedthatusersmanuallysetaxedIPaddressintheBIOS.

Prestart
TheRemoteManagementModulehasanembeddedWebserverandanapplicationwithmultiplestandard

accesstheseinterfaces.

theWebsessionwillnotautomaticallytimeout.Aftertheautomatictimeouthappens,iftheusertriesto

Theremoteconsoleistheredirectionscreen,keyboardandmouseoftheremotehostsystem(the
ThinkServerRemoteManagementModulehasbeeninstalledonit)Ifthereisaneedtousetheremote
consoleofthemanagedhostsystem,pleasemakesurethattheserverhasJava*runtimeenvironment
plug-in.
Whentheremoteconsoleisstartup,anewwindowwillbeopened,showingthescreenofthehostsystem.
Operatingtheremoteconsoleisjustlikeanadministratorissittinginfrontofthescreenoftheremote
system.Thismeansthattheusercanusethekeyboardandmouseasheusuallydoes.
StartRedirectionConsole
Theremoteconsoleistheredirectionkeyboard,videoandmouseoftheremotehostsystem(theThinkServer
RemoteManagementModulehasbeeninstalledonit).YoucanclickRemoteConsoleinthispagetostart
theredirectionwindowforremoteconsoleKVM.
ByclickingLaunchJavaKVMClient,youcanstarttheredirectionconsoleandcarryoutremote
managementforserver.
AfterclickingLaunchJavaKVMClient,apop-upwindowwillbeshownandbegintodownloadJava
networkbootprotocolJviewer.jnlpdocument.
Andthen,theJavaapplicationsfortheimplementofremoteconsolewillbedownloaded.

MainWindow
Whentheremoteconsoleisstarted,themainwindowofremoteconsolewillappear.
Theremoteconsoleshowsthescreenoftheremoteserver.Operatingtheremoteconsoleisjustlikeyouare
infrontoftheremoteserver.Theresponsespeedmaybealittledelay,dependingonthebandwidthand
delaybetweentheThinkServerRemoteManagementModuleandtheremoteconsole.
MenuBaroftheRemoteConsole
Thereisamenubaronthetopoftheremoteconsolewindow.Youcanviewthestatusoftheremoteconsole
andcongurethesetupforlocalremoteconsolethroughtheitemsonthemenubar.
Thefollowingsectiondescribesthefeaturesofeachcontrol.
ViewMenuofRemoteConsole
ByclickingtheViewoptiononthecontrolbaroftheremoteconsole,youcanselecttheviewoptioninthe

MacrosMenuoftheRemoteConsole
ByclickingMacros,youcanopentheMacrosmenucontainingrelevanttaskoptions.Withthismenu,
youcantakethefollowingoperations:
•HoldCtrl/Alt/Windowskeys:Allowsimulatingtopressthesespecialkeysontheremotekeyboard.On
thelocalkeyboard,thesespecialkeyswillbecarriedoutthroughlocaloperatingsystem,ratherthan
transfertoremoteoperationsystem.
•Alt+Ctrl+Del:IssueAlt+Ctrl+Delcommandtoremoteoperationsystem.
ToolsMenuoftheRemoteConsole
ByclickingT ools,youcanopenthetoolsmenucontainingrelevanttaskoptions.Withthismenu,youcan
takethefollowingoperations:
•Sessionoptions:Inthisoption,youcansetthemousemodeandthevideoquality.
•Sessionuserlist:Inthisoption,youcanknowthecurrentusers.
•Singlecursormode:Someoperatingsystemsdonotalignthelocalandremotecursors,whichresultsin
offsetsbetweenthelocalandremotemousecursors.Singlecursormodehidesthelocalclientcursor
whilethemouseiswithintheVideoViewerwindow.Whensinglecursormodeisactivated,theuser
seesonlytheremotecursor.
•States:Inthisoption,youcanseethecurrentstateoftheremoteredirection.
PowerMenuoftheRemoteConsole
ByclickingPower,youcanopenthemenucontainingrelevanttaskoptions.Youcancontrolthepower
action.

ThepageofUserslistsallusersincludingconguredusers,withnetworkpermission.Theoptionsincluded
inthispageareusedtoconguretheIPMIusersforserversandtheirpermissions.Toaddanewuser,you
