WhenyouhandleoptionsorCRUs,orperormanyworkinsidethecomputer,taketheollowingprecautions
toavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Alwayshandlecomponentscareully.Handleadapters,memorymodules,andothercircuitboardsbythe
edges.Nevertouchexposedcircuitry.
•Preventothersromtouchingcomponents.
•Whenyouinstallastatic-sensitiveoptionorCRU,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthe
parttoametalexpansion-slotcoverorotherunpaintedmetalsuraceonthecomputeroratleasttwo
seconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityinthepackageandyourbody.
•Whenpossible,removethestatic-sensitivepartromthestatic-protectivepackagingandinstallthepart
withoutsettingitdown.Whenthisisnotpossible,placethestatic-protectivepackagingonasmooth,
levelsuraceandplacethepartonit.
•Donotplacethepartonthecomputercoverorothermetalsurace.
Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlythepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedbytheproductmanuacturer.
Thepowercordsshallbesaetyapproved.ForGermany,itshallbeH05VV-F,3G,0.75mm2,orbetter.For
othercountries,thesuitabletypesshallbeusedaccordingly.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotherobject.Doingsocanstressthecordinwaysthat
cancausethecordtoray,crack,orcrimp.Thiscanpresentasaetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedbyobjects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourpowercordorpower
adapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancausea
shortcircuit,particularlyithepowercordorpoweradapterhasbeenstressedbymisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionopowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminalsonapoweradapter,
whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.
Ensurethatallpowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcompletelypluggedintoreceptacles.
Donotuseanypoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshowssignsooverheating(such
asdeormedplastic)attheacinputoranywhereonthepoweradapter.
Donotuseanypowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshowsignsocorrosionor
overheatingorwherethepowercordappearstohavebeendamagedinanyway.
Extensioncordsandrelateddeices
Ensurethatextensioncords,surgeprotectors,uninterruptiblepowersupplies,andpowerstripsthatyouuse
areratedtohandletheelectricalrequirementsotheproduct.Neveroverloadthesedevices.Ipowerstrips
areused,theloadshouldnotexceedthepowerstripinputrating.Consultanelectricianormoreinormation
iyouhavequestionsaboutpowerloads,powerrequirements,andinputratings.

Plugsandoutlets
Iareceptacle(poweroutlet)thatyouintendtousewithyourcomputerequipmentappearstobedamaged
orcorroded,donotusetheoutletuntilitisreplacedbyaqualifiedelectrician.
Donotbendormodiytheplug.Itheplugisdamaged,contactthemanuacturertoobtainareplacement.
Donotshareanelectricaloutletwithotherhomeorcommercialappliancesthatdrawlargeamountso
electricity;otherwise,unstablevoltagemightdamageyourcomputer,data,orattacheddevices.
Someproductsareequippedwithathree-prongedplug.Thisplugfitsonlyintoagroundedelectricaloutlet.
Thisisasaetyeature.Donotdeeatthissaetyeaturebytryingtoinsertitintoanon-groundedoutlet.I
youcannotinserttheplugintotheoutlet,contactanelectricianoranapprovedoutletadapterortoreplace
theoutletwithonethatenablesthissaetyeature.Neveroverloadanelectricaloutlet.Theoverallsystem
loadshouldnotexceed80percentothebranchcircuitrating.Consultanelectricianormoreinormation
iyouhavequestionsaboutpowerloadsandbranchcircuitratings.
Besurethatthepoweroutletyouareusingisproperlywired,easilyaccessible,andlocatedclosetothe
equipment.Donotullyextendpowercordsinawaythatwillstressthecords.
Besurethatthepoweroutletprovidesthecorrectvoltageandcurrentortheproductyouareinstalling.
Careullyconnectanddisconnecttheequipmentromtheelectricaloutlet.

DonotconnectordisconnectanyexternaldevicecablesotherthanUniversalSerialBus(USB)and1394
cableswhilethecomputerpowerison;otherwise,youmightdamageyourcomputer.Toavoidpossible
damagetoattacheddevices,waitatleastfivesecondsaterthecomputerisshutdowntodisconnect
externaldevices.
Heatandproductentilation
Computers,poweradapters,andmanyaccessoriescangenerateheatwhenturnedonandwhenbatteries
arecharging.Alwaysollowthesebasicprecautions:
•Donotleaveyourcomputer,poweradapter,oraccessoriesincontactwithyourlaporanypartoyour
bodyoranextendedperiodwhentheproductsareunctioningorwhenthebatteryischarging.Your
computer,poweradapter,andmanyaccessoriesproducesomeheatduringnormaloperation.Extended
contactwiththebodycouldcausediscomortor,potentially,askinburn.
•Donotchargethebatteryoroperateyourcomputer,poweradapter,oraccessoriesnearflammable
materialsorinexplosiveenvironments.
•Ventilationslots,ans,andheatsinksareprovidedwiththeproductorsaety,comort,andreliable
operation.Theseeaturesmightinadvertentlybecomeblockedbyplacingtheproductonabed,soa,
carpet,orotherflexiblesurace.Neverblock,cover,ordisabletheseeatures.
Inspectyourdesktopcomputerordustaccumulationatleastonceeverythreemonths.Beoreinspecting
yourcomputer,turnothepowerandunplugthecomputer'spowercordromtheelectricaloutlet;then
removeanydustromventsandperorationsinthebezel.Iyounoticeexternaldustaccumulation,then
examineandremovedustromtheinsideothecomputerincludingheatsinkinletfins,powersupplyvents,
andans.Alwaysturnoandunplugthecomputerbeoreopeningthecover.Ipossible,avoidoperating
yourcomputerwithintwoeetohigh-traficareas.Iyoumustoperateyourcomputerinornearahigh-trafic

Foryoursaetyandtomaintainoptimumcomputerperormance,alwaysollowthesebasicprecautions

•Keepthecoverclosedwheneverthecomputerispluggedin.
•Regularlyinspecttheoutsideothecomputerordustaccumulation.
•Removedustromventsandanyperorationsinthebezel.Morerequentcleaningsmightberequiredor
computersindustyorhigh-traficareas.
•Donotrestrictorblockanyventilationopenings.
•Donotstoreoroperateyourcomputerinsideurniture,asthismightincreasetheriskooverheating.
•Airflowtemperaturesintothecomputershouldnotexceed35°C(95°F).
•Donotinstallairfiltrationdevices.Theymayintererewithpropercooling.
Operatingenironment
Theoptimalenvironmentinwhichtouseyourcomputeris10°C-35°C(50°F-95°F)withhumidityranging
between35%and80%.Iyourcomputerisstoredortransportedintemperatureslessthan10°C(50°F),
allowthecoldcomputertoriseslowlytoanoptimaloperatingtemperatureo10°C-35°C(50°F-95°F)beore
use.Thisprocesscouldtaketwohoursinextremeconditions.Failuretoallowyourcomputertorisetoan
optimaloperatingtemperaturebeoreusecouldresultinirreparabledamagetoyourcomputer.
Ipossible,placeyourcomputerinawell-ventilatedanddryareawithoutdirectexposuretosunshine.
Keepelectricalappliancessuchasanelectrican,radio,high-poweredspeakers,airconditioner,and
microwaveovenawayromyourcomputerbecausethestrongmagneticfieldsgeneratedbythese
appliancescandamagethemonitoranddataontheharddiskdrive.
Donotplaceanybeveragesontopoorbesidethecomputerorotherattacheddevices.Iliquidisspilledon
orinthecomputeroranattacheddevice,ashortcircuitorotherdamagemightoccur.
