Staticelectricityprevention
Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,canseriouslydamagecomutercomonentsandotions.

WhenyouhandleotionsorCRUs,orerformanyworkinsidethecomuter,takethefollowingrecautions
toavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduaroundyou.
•Alwayshandlecomonentscarefully.Handleadaters,memorymodules,andothercircuitboardsbythe
edges.Nevertouchexosedcircuitry.
•Preventothersfromtouchingcomonents.
•Whenyouinstallastatic-sensitiveotionorCRU,touchthestatic-rotectiveackagecontainingthe
arttoametalexansion-slotcoverorotherunaintedmetalsurfaceonthecomuterforatleasttwo
seconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityintheackageandyourbody.
•Whenossible,removethestatic-sensitiveartfromthestatic-rotectiveackagingandinstalltheart
withoutsettingitdown.Whenthisisnotossible,lacethestatic-rotectiveackagingonasmooth,
levelsurfaceandlacetheartonit.
•Donotlacetheartonthecomutercoverorothermetalsurface.
Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlytheowercordsandoweradaterssuliedbytheroductmanufacturer.
Theowercordsshallbesafetyaroved.ForGermany,itshallbeH05VV-F,3G,0.75mm2,orbetter.For
othercountries,thesuitabletyesshallbeusedaccordingly.
Neverwraaowercordaroundaoweradaterorotherobject.Doingsocanstressthecordinwaysthat
cancausethecordtofray,crack,orcrim.Thiscanresentasafetyhazard.
Alwaysrouteowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,triedover,orinchedbyobjects.
Protectowercordandoweradatersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourowercordorower
adaternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancausea
shortcircuit,articularlyiftheowercordoroweradaterhasbeenstressedbymisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionofowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminalsonaoweradater,
whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.
Ensurethatallowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcomletelyluggedintorecetacles.
Donotuseanyoweradaterthatshowscorrosionattheacinutinsorshowssignsofoverheating(such
asdeformedlastic)attheacinutoranywhereontheoweradater.
Donotuseanyowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshowsignsofcorrosionor
overheatingorwheretheowercordaearstohavebeendamagedinanyway.
Extensioncordsandrelateddevices
Ensurethatextensioncords,surgerotectors,uninterrutibleowersulies,andowerstristhatyouuse
areratedtohandletheelectricalrequirementsoftheroduct.Neveroverloadthesedevices.Ifowerstris
areused,theloadshouldnotexceedtheowerstriinutrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation
ifyouhavequestionsaboutowerloads,owerrequirements,andinutratings.

Plugsandoutlets
Ifarecetacle(oweroutlet)thatyouintendtousewithyourcomuterequimentaearstobedamaged
orcorroded,donotusetheoutletuntilitisrelacedbyaqualifiedelectrician.
Donotbendormodifythelug.Ifthelugisdamaged,contactthemanufacturertoobtainarelacement.
Donotshareanelectricaloutletwithotherhomeorcommercialaliancesthatdrawlargeamountsof
electricity;otherwise,unstablevoltagemightdamageyourcomuter,data,orattacheddevices.
Someroductsareequiedwithathree-rongedlug.Thislugfitsonlyintoagroundedelectricaloutlet.
Thisisasafetyfeature.Donotdefeatthissafetyfeaturebytryingtoinsertitintoanon-groundedoutlet.If
youcannotinsertthelugintotheoutlet,contactanelectricianforanarovedoutletadaterortorelace
theoutletwithonethatenablesthissafetyfeature.Neveroverloadanelectricaloutlet.Theoverallsystem
loadshouldnotexceed80ercentofthebranchcircuitrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation
ifyouhavequestionsaboutowerloadsandbranchcircuitratings.
Besurethattheoweroutletyouareusingisroerlywired,easilyaccessible,andlocatedclosetothe
equiment.Donotfullyextendowercordsinawaythatwillstressthecords.
Besurethattheoweroutletrovidesthecorrectvoltageandcurrentfortheroductyouareinstalling.
Carefullyconnectanddisconnecttheequimentfromtheelectricaloutlet.
Externaldevices
DonotconnectordisconnectanyexternaldevicecablesotherthanUniversalSerialBus(USB)and1394
cableswhilethecomuterowerison;otherwise,youmightdamageyourcomuter.Toavoidossible
damagetoattacheddevices,waitatleastfivesecondsafterthecomuterisshutdowntodisconnect
externaldevices.
Heatandproductventilation
Comuters,oweradaters,andmanyaccessoriescangenerateheatwhenturnedonandwhenbatteries
arecharging.Alwaysfollowthesebasicrecautions:
•Donotleaveyourcomuter,oweradater,oraccessoriesincontactwithyourlaoranyartofyour
bodyforanextendederiodwhentheroductsarefunctioningorwhenthebatteryischarging.Your
comuter,oweradater,andmanyaccessoriesroducesomeheatduringnormaloeration.Extended
contactwiththebodycouldcausediscomfortor,otentially,askinburn.
•Donotchargethebatteryoroerateyourcomuter,oweradater,oraccessoriesnearflammable
materialsorinexlosiveenvironments.
•Ventilationslots,fans,andheatsinksarerovidedwiththeroductforsafety,comfort,andreliable
oeration.Thesefeaturesmightinadvertentlybecomeblockedbylacingtheroductonabed,sofa,
caret,orotherflexiblesurface.Neverblock,cover,ordisablethesefeatures.
Insectyourdesktocomuterfordustaccumulationatleastonceeverythreemonths.Beforeinsecting
yourcomuter,turnofftheowerandunlugthecomuter'sowercordfromtheelectricaloutlet;then
removeanydustfromventsanderforationsinthebezel.Ifyounoticeexternaldustaccumulation,then
examineandremovedustfromtheinsideofthecomuterincludingheatsinkinletfins,owersulyvents,
andfans.Alwaysturnoffandunlugthecomuterbeforeoeningthecover.Ifossible,avoidoerating
yourcomuterwithintwofeetofhigh-trafficareas.Ifyoumustoerateyourcomuterinornearahigh-traffic
area,insectand,ifnecessary,cleanyourcomutermorefrequently.

Foryoursafetyandtomaintainotimumcomutererformance,alwaysfollowthesebasicrecautions
withyourdesktocomuter:
•Keethecoverclosedwheneverthecomuterisluggedin.
•Regularlyinsecttheoutsideofthecomuterfordustaccumulation.
•Removedustfromventsandanyerforationsinthebezel.Morefrequentcleaningsmightberequiredfor
comutersindustyorhigh-trafficareas.
•Donotrestrictorblockanyventilationoenings.
•Donotstoreoroerateyourcomuterinsidefurniture,asthismightincreasetheriskofoverheating.
•Airflowtemeraturesintothecomutershouldnotexceed35°C(95°F).
•Donotinstallairfiltrationdevices.Theymayinterferewithroercooling.
Operatingenvironment
Theotimalenvironmentinwhichtouseyourcomuteris10°C-35°C(50°F-95°F)withhumidityranging
between35%and80%.Ifyourcomuterisstoredortransortedintemeratureslessthan10°C(50°F),
allowthecoldcomutertoriseslowlytoanotimaloeratingtemeratureof10°C-35°C(50°F-95°F)before
use.Thisrocesscouldtaketwohoursinextremeconditions.Failuretoallowyourcomutertorisetoan
otimaloeratingtemeraturebeforeusecouldresultinirrearabledamagetoyourcomuter.
Ifossible,laceyourcomuterinawell-ventilatedanddryareawithoutdirectexosuretosunshine.
Keeelectricalaliancessuchasanelectricfan,radio,high-oweredseakers,airconditioner,and
microwaveovenawayfromyourcomuterbecausethestrongmagneticfieldsgeneratedbythese
aliancescandamagethemonitoranddataontheharddiskdrive.
Donotlaceanybeveragesontooforbesidethecomuterorotherattacheddevices.Ifliquidissilledon
orinthecomuteroranattacheddevice,ashortcircuitorotherdamagemightoccur.
Donoteatorsmokeoveryourkeyboard.Particlesthatfallintoyourkeyboardcancausedamage.
Lasercompliancestatement
CAUTION:
Whenlaserproducts(suchasCD-ROMs,DVDdrives,fiberopticdevices,ortransmitters)are
installed,notethefollowing:
•Donotremovethecovers.Removingthecoversofthelaserproductcouldresultinexposureto
