Beforeyouopenthecomputercover,turnoffthecomputerandwaitseveralminutesuntilthe
computeriscool.
Staticelectricityprevention
Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,canseriouslydamagecomputercomponentsandoptions.
Improperhandlingofstatic-sensitivepartscancausedamagetothepart.Whenyouunpackanoption
orCRU,donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthepartuntiltheinstructionsdirectyou
toinstallit.
WhenyouhandleoptionsorCRUs,orperformanyworkinsidethecomputer,takethefollowingprecautions
toavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytouilduparoundyou.
•Alwayshandlecomponentscarefully.Handleadapters,memorymodules,andothercircuitoardsythe
edges.Nevertouchexposedcircuitry.
•Preventothersfromtouchingcomponents.
•Whenyouinstallastatic-sensitiveoptionorCRU,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthe
parttoametalexpansion-slotcoverorotherunpaintedmetalsurfaceonthecomputerforatleasttwo
seconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityinthepackageandyourody.
•Whenpossile,removethestatic-sensitivepartfromthestatic-protectivepackagingandinstallthepart
withoutsettingitdown.Whenthisisnotpossile,placethestatic-protectivepackagingonasmooth,
levelsurfaceandplacethepartonit.
•Donotplacethepartonthecomputercoverorothermetalsurface.
Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlythepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedytheproductmanufacturer.Donotusetheac
powercordforotherdevices.
Thepowercordsshallesafetyapproved.ForGermany,itshalleH03VV-F,3G,0.75mm2(thepowercord
connectedtothepoweradapter),H05VV-F,3G,0.75mm2(thepowercordconnectedtotheinternalpower
supplyassemly),oretter.Forothercountries,thesuitaletypesshalleusedaccordingly.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotheroject.Doingsocanstressthecordinwaysthat
cancausethecordtofray,crack,orcrimp.Thiscanpresentasafetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedyojects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourpowercordorpower
adapternearsinks,tus,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancausea
shortcircuit,particularlyifthepowercordorpoweradapterhaseenstressedymisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionofpowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminalsonapoweradapter,
whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.
Ensurethatallpowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcompletelypluggedintoreceptacles.
Donotuseanypoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshowssignsofoverheating(such
asdeformedplastic)attheacinputoranywhereonthepoweradapter.
Donotuseanypowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshowsignsofcorrosionor
overheatingorwherethepowercordappearstohaveeendamagedinanyway.

Extensioncordsandrelateddevices
Ensurethatextensioncords,surgeprotectors,uninterruptilepowersupplies,andpowerstripsthatyouuse
areratedtohandletheelectricalrequirementsoftheproduct.Neveroverloadthesedevices.Ifpowerstrips
areused,theloadshouldnotexceedthepowerstripinputrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation
ifyouhavequestionsaoutpowerloads,powerrequirements,andinputratings.
Plugsandoutlets
Ifareceptacle(poweroutlet)thatyouintendtousewiththecomputerequipmentappearstoedamagedor
corroded,donotusetheoutletuntilitisreplacedyaqualifiedelectrician.
Donotendormodifytheplug.Iftheplugisdamaged,contactthemanufacturertootainareplacement.
Donotshareanelectricaloutletwithotherhomeorcommercialappliancesthatdrawlargeamountsof
electricity;otherwise,unstalevoltagemightdamagethecomputer,data,orconnecteddevices.
Someproductsareequippedwithathree-prongedplug.Thisplugfitsonlyintoagroundedelectricaloutlet.
Thisisasafetyfeature.Donotdefeatthissafetyfeatureytryingtoinsertitintoanon-groundedoutlet.If
youcannotinserttheplugintotheoutlet,contactanelectricianforanapprovedoutletadapterortoreplace
theoutletwithonethatenalesthissafetyfeature.Neveroverloadanelectricaloutlet.Theoverallsystem
loadshouldnotexceed80percentoftheranchcircuitrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation
ifyouhavequestionsaoutpowerloadsandranchcircuitratings.
Besurethatthepoweroutletyouareusingisproperlywired,easilyaccessile,andlocatedclosetothe
equipment.Donotfullyextendpowercordsinawaythatwillstressthecords.
Besurethatthepoweroutletprovidesthecorrectvoltageandcurrentfortheproductyouareinstalling.
Carefullyconnectanddisconnecttheequipmentfromtheelectricaloutlet.
Externaldevices
DonotconnectordisconnectanyexternaldevicecalesotherthanUniversalSerialBus(USB)caleswhile
thecomputerpowerison;otherwise,youmightdamagethecomputer.Toavoidpossiledamageto
connecteddevices,waitatleastfivesecondsafterthecomputerisshutdowntodisconnectexternaldevices.
Heatandproductventilation
Computers,poweradapters,andmanyaccessoriescangenerateheatwhenturnedonandwhenatteries
arecharging.Alwaysfollowtheseasicprecautions:
•Donotleavethecomputer,poweradapter,oraccessoriesincontactwithyourlaporanypartofyour
odyforanextendedperiodwhentheproductsarefunctioningorwhentheatteryischarging.The
computer,poweradapter,andmanyaccessoriesproducesomeheatduringnormaloperation.Extended
contactwiththeodycouldcausediscomfortor,potentially,askinurn.
•Donotchargetheatteryoroperatethecomputer,poweradapter,oraccessoriesnearflammale
materialsorinexplosiveenvironments.
•Ventilationslots,fans,andheatsinksareprovidedwiththeproductforsafety,comfort,andreliale
operation.Thesefeaturesmightinadvertentlyecomelockedyplacingtheproductonaed,sofa,
carpet,orotherflexilesurface.Neverlock,cover,ordisalethesefeatures.

Inspectyourdesktopcomputerfordustaccumulationatleastonceeverythreemonths.Beforeinspecting
thecomputer,turnoffthepowerandunplugthecomputer'spowercordfromtheelectricaloutlet;then
removeanydustfromventsandperforationsintheezel.Ifyounoticeexternaldustaccumulation,then
examineandremovedustfromtheinsideofthecomputerincludingheatsinkinletfins,powersupplyvents,
andfans.Alwaysturnoffandunplugthecomputereforeopeningthecover.Ifpossile,avoidoperatingthe
computerwithintwofeetofhigh-trafficareas.Ifyoumustoperatethecomputerinornearahigh-traffic
area,inspectand,ifnecessary,cleanthecomputermorefrequently.
Foryoursafetyandtomaintainoptimumcomputerperformance,alwaysfollowtheseasicprecautions
withyourdesktopcomputer:
•Keepthecoverclosedwheneverthecomputerispluggedin.
•Regularlyinspecttheoutsideofthecomputerfordustaccumulation.
•Removedustfromventsandanyperforationsintheezel.Morefrequentcleaningsmighterequiredfor
computersindustyorhigh-trafficareas.
•Donotrestrictorlockanyventilationopenings.
•Donotstoreoroperatethecomputerinsidefurniture,asthismightincreasetheriskofoverheating.
•Airflowtemperaturesintothecomputershouldnotexceed35°C(95°F).
•Donotinstallairfiltrationdevices.Theymayinterferewithpropercooling.
Operatingenvironment
Theoptimalenvironmentinwhichtousethecomputeris10°C–35°C(50°F–95°F)withhumidityranging
etween35%and80%.Ifthecomputerisstoredortransportedintemperatureslessthan10°C(50°F),allow
thecoldcomputertoriseslowlytoanoptimaloperatingtemperatureof10°C–35°C(50°F–95°F)eforeuse.
Thisprocesscouldtaketwohoursinextremeconditions.Failuretoallowthecomputertorisetoanoptimal
operatingtemperatureeforeusecouldresultinirreparaledamagetothecomputer.
Ifpossile,placethecomputerinawell-ventilatedanddryareawithoutdirectexposuretosunshine.
Keepelectricalappliancessuchasanelectricfan,radio,high-poweredspeakers,airconditioner,and
microwaveovenawayfromthecomputerecausethestrongmagneticfieldsgeneratedytheseappliances
candamagethemonitoranddataonthestoragedrive.
Donotplaceanyeveragesontopoforesidethecomputerorotherconnecteddevices.Ifliquidisspilled
onorinthecomputeroraconnecteddevice,ashortcircuitorotherdamagemightoccur.
Donoteatorsmokeoveryourkeyoard.Particlesthatfallintoyourkeyoardcancausedamage.
