Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlythepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedytheproductmanufacturer.Donotusetheac
powercordforotherdevices.
Thepowercordsshallesafetyapproved.ForGermany,itshalleH03VV-F,3G,0.75mm2(thepowercord
connectedtothepoweradapter),H05VV-F,3G,0.75mm2(thepowercordconnectedtotheinternalpower
supplyassemly),oretter.Forothercountries,thesuitaletypesshalleusedaccordingly.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotheroject.Doingsocanstressthecordinwaysthat
cancausethecordtofray,crack,orcrimp.Thiscanpresentasafetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedyojects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourpowercordorpower
adapternearsinks,tus,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancausea
shortcircuit,particularlyifthepowercordorpoweradapterhaseenstressedymisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionofpowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminalsonapoweradapter,
whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.
Ensurethatallpowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcompletelypluggedintoreceptacles.
Donotuseanypoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshowssignsofoverheating(such
asdeformedplastic)attheacinputoranywhereonthepoweradapter.
Donotuseanypowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshowsignsofcorrosionor
overheatingorwherethepowercordappearstohaveeendamagedinanyway.
Generalsafety
Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafety:
•Oservegoodhousekeepingintheareaofthemachinesduringandaftermaintenance.
•Whenliftinganyheavyoject:
1.Ensureyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping.
2.Distriutetheweightoftheojectequallyetweenyourfeet.
3.Useaslowliftingforce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattempttolift.
4.Liftystandingorypushingupwithyourlegmuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainfromthe
musclesinyourack.

•Donotperformanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomer,orthatmakestheequipmentunsafe.
•Beforeyoustartthemachine,ensurethatotherservicerepresentativesandthecustomer'spersonnelare
notinahazardousposition.
•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awayfromallpersonnel,whileyouareservicing
themachine.
•Keepyourtoolcaseawayfromwalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottripoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanetrappedinthemovingpartsofamachine.Ensurethatyoursleeves
arefastenedorrolledupaoveyourelows.Ifyourhairislong,fastenit.
•Inserttheendsofyournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwithanonconductiveclip,approximately
8centimeters(3inches)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelry,chains,metal-frameeyeglasses,ormetalfastenersforyourclothing.
Remember:Metalojectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsafetyglasseswhenyouare:hammering,drilling,soldering,cuttingwire,attachingsprings,using
solvents,orworkinginanyotherconditionsthatmightehazardoustoyoureyes.
•Afterservice,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,laels,andgroundwires.Replaceanysafetydevice
thatiswornordefective.
•Reinstallallcoverscorrectlyeforereturningthemachinetothecustomer.

Hazardousmovingparts.Keepfingersandotherbodypartsaway.
CUTION:
Beforeyouopenthecomputercover,turnoffthecomputerandwaitseveralminutesuntilthe
computeriscool.
Electricalsafety
CUTION:
Electricalcurrentfrompower,telephone,andcommunicationcablescanbehazardous.Toavoid
personalinjuryorequipmentdamage,disconnecttheattachedpowercords,telecommunication
systems,networks,andmodemsbeforeyouopenthecomputercovers,unlessinstructedotherwise
intheinstallationandconfigurationprocedures.

Oservethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment.
Important:Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoft
materialthatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents.Manycustomershave,near
theirequipment,ruerfloormatsthatcontainsmallconductivefierstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarges.
Donotusethistypeofmattoprotectyourselffromelectricalshock.
•Findtheroomemergencypower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccurs,youcanthenoperatetheswitchorunplugthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Disconnectallpowerefore:
–Performingamechanicalinspection
–Workingnearpowersupplies
–RemovingorinstallingFieldReplacealeUnits(FRUs)
•Beforeyoustarttoworkonthemachine,unplugthepowercord.Ifyoucannotunplugit,poweroffthe
walloxthatsuppliespowertothemachineandlockthewalloxintheoffposition.
•Ifyouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposedelectricalcircuits,oservethefollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherperson,familiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearyou.
Remember:Anotherpersonmustetheretoswitchoffthepower,ifnecessary.
–Useonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorehindyourack.
Remember:Theremusteacompletecircuittocauseelectricalshock.Byoservingtheaoverule,
youmaypreventacurrentfrompassingthroughyourody.
–Whenusingatester,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedproeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester.
–Standonsuitaleruermats(otainedlocally,ifnecessary)toinsulateyoufromgroundssuchas
metalfloorstripsandmachineframes.
Oservethespecialsafetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltages;theseinstructionsarein
thesafetysectionsofmaintenanceinformation.Useextremecarewhenmeasuringhighvoltages.
•Regularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.
•Donotusewornorrokentoolsandtesters.
•Neverassumethatpowerhaseendisconnectedfromacircuit.First,checkthatithaseenpowered-off.
•Alwayslookcarefullyforpossilehazardsinyourworkarea.Examplesofthesehazardsaremoistfloors,
nongroundedpowerextensioncales,powersurges,andmissingsafetygrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalmirror.Thesurfaceis
conductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonalinjuryandmachinedamage.
•Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheyareremovedfromtheirnormaloperating
placesinamachine:
–Powersupplyunits
–Pumps
–Blowersandfans
–Motorgenerators
andsimilarunits.(Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingoftheunits.)
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs:
–Usecaution;donotecomeavictimyourself.
–Switchoffpower.

Safetyinspectionguide
Theintentofthisinspectionguideistoassistyouinidentifyingpotentiallyunsafeconditionsonthese
products.Eachmachine,asitwasdesignedanduilt,hadrequiredsafetyitemsinstalledtoprotectusers
andservicepersonnelfrominjury.Thisguideaddressesonlythoseitems.However,goodjudgmentshould
eusedtoidentifypotentialsafetyhazardsduetoattachmentoffeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredythis
inspectionguide.
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresent,youmustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldeand
whetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectingtheprolem.
Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower(primaryvoltageontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock).
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedCRTfaceorulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware
Theguideconsistsofaseriesofstepspresentedinachecklist.Beginthecheckswiththepoweroff,and
thepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversfordamage(loose,roken,orsharpedges).
2.Power-offthecomputer.Disconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordfor:
a.Athird-wiregroundconnectoringoodcondition.Useametertomeasurethird-wireground
continuityfor0.1ohmorlessetweentheexternalgroundpinandframeground.
.Thepowercordshouldetheappropriatetypeasspecifiedinthepartslistings.
c.Insulationmustnotefrayedorworn.
4.Removethecover.
5.Checkforanyoviousalterations.Usegoodjudgmentastothesafetyofanyalterations.
6.Checkinsidetheunitforanyoviousunsafeconditions,suchasmetalfilings,contamination,wateror
otherliquids,orsignsoffireorsmokedamage.
7.Checkforworn,frayed,orpinchedcales.
8.Checkthatthepower-supplycoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenoteenremovedortamperedwith.
Handlingelectrostaticdischarge-sensitivedevices
Anycomputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargeetweenojects.
ToprotectagainstESDdamage,equalizethechargeetweenojects.Then,themachine,thepart,the
workmat,andthepersonhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.
Notes:
1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheyexceedtherequirementsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesyouusehaveeencertified(ISO9000)asfullyeffective.
WhenhandlingESD-sensitiveparts:
•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheyareinsertedintotheproduct.

•Avoidcontactwithotherpeoplewhilehandlingthepart.
•Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstyourskintoeliminatestaticonyourody.
•Preventthepartfromtouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeeven
whenyouarewearingawriststrap.
•Usethelacksideofagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespecially
usefulwhenhandlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectagroundingsystem,suchasthoselistedelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecific
servicerequirement.
Note:TheuseofagroundingsystemisdesiraleutnotrequiredtoprotectagainstESDdamage.
