hapter 4. Replacing hardware
This chapter pr vides instructi ns n h w t replace hardware f r y ur c mputer.
Before replacing hardware
Attention: D n t pen y ur c mputer r attempt any repairs bef re reading this secti n and the Important
Product Information Guide.
Notes before replacing hardware
• Use c mputer c mp nents pr vided nly by Len v .
• When installing r replacing an pti n, use the appr priate instructi ns explained in this manual al ng with
the instructi ns that c me with the pti n.
• In m st areas f the w rld, Len v requires the return f defective CRUs. Inf rmati n ab ut this will c me
with the CRU r will c me a few days after the CRU arrives.
Handling static-sensitive devices
D n t pen the static-pr tective package c ntaining the new part until the defective part has been rem ved
and y u are ready t install the new part. Static electricity, alth ugh harmless t y u, can seri usly damage
c mputer c mp nents and pti ns.
When y u handle pti ns and ther c mputer c mp nents, take these precauti ns t av id static-electricity
damage:
• Limit y ur m vement. M vement can cause static electricity t build up ar und y u.
• Always handle pti ns and ther c mputer c mp nents carefully. Handle PCI/PCIe cards, mem ry
m dules, system b ards, and micr pr cess rs by the edges. Never t uch any exp sed circuitry.
• Prevent thers fr m t uching the pti ns and ther c mputer c mp nents.
• T uch the static-pr tective package c ntaining the part t a metal expansi n-sl t c ver r ther
unpainted metal surface n the c mputer f r at least tw sec nds. This reduces static electricity fr m the
package and y ur b dy bef re y u install r replace a new part.
• When p ssible, rem ve the new part fr m the static-pr tective package, and install it directly in the
c mputer with ut setting the part d wn. When this is n t p ssible, place the static-pr tective package n
a sm th, level surface and place the part n the package.
• D n t place the part n the c mputer c ver r ther metal surface.
Knowing FRUs (including RUs)
• Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) are c mputer parts that a trained technician can upgrade r replace. FRUs
include all CRUs. F r detailed FRU inf rmati n, such as the FRU part numbers and supp rted c mputer

– Self-service CRUs: Y u can install self-service CRUs easily. These CRUs might be stand-al ne,
latched, r secured by up t tw screws. Examples f self-service CRUs include the keyb ard, m use,
any USB device. Y u are resp nsible f r replacing all self-service CRUs.
– Opti nal-service CRUs: Handling pti nal-service CRUs requires s me technical skills and simple t ls
(such as a screwdriver). These CRUs are is lated parts within the c mputer. They are usually
