Overview
This guide is intended to be used by customers who are replacing Customer
Replaceable Units (CRUs) as well as trained service personnel who are replacing
Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). In this guide, CRUs and FRUs will often be
referred to as parts.
Note: Trained service personnel should refer to the Hardware Maintenance Manual
(HMM) for parts ordering information.
This guide does not include procedures for all parts. It is expected that cables,
switches, and certain mechanical parts can be replaced by trained service personnel
without the need for step-by-step procedures.

Tools required
To replace some parts in your computer, you will need aflat-blade or Phillips
screwdriver. Additional tools might be needed for certain parts.
Handling static-sensitive devices
Static electricity, although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer
components.
When you are replacing apart, do not open the static-protective package
containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the
computer and you are ready to install the new part.
When you handle parts and other computer components, take these precautions to
avoid static-electricity damage:
vLimit your movement. Movement can cause static-electricity to build up around
you.
vAlways handle parts and other computer components carefully. Handle
adapters, memory modules, system boards, and microprocessors by the edges.
Never touch any exposed circuitry.
vPrevent others from touching the parts and other computer components.
vBefore you replace anew part, touch the static-protective package containing the
part to ametal expansion-slot cover or other unpainted metal surface on the
computer for at least two seconds. This reduces static electricity in the package
and your body.
vWhen possible, remove the new part from the static-protective packaging, and
install it directly in the computer without setting the part down. When this is
not possible, place the static-protective package that the part came in on a
smooth, level surface and place the part on it.
vDo not place the part on the computer cover or other metal surface.

This chapter provides illustrations to help locate the various connectors, controls
and components of the computer. To remove the computer cover, see “Removing
the computer cover” on page 5.

Identifying parts on the system board
The system board (sometimes called the planar or motherboard)is the main circuit
board in your computer. It provides basic computer functions and supports a
variety of devices.
The following illustration shows the locations of parts on the system board.

Chapter 2. Replacing hardware
Attention:
Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any repair before reading the “Important
safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the
Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer. To obtain copies of the Quick

Note: Use only parts provided by Lenovo.
Removing the computer cover
Important
Turn off the computer and wait 3to 5minutes to let the computer cool
before removing the computer cover.
To remove the computer cover:
1. Remove any media (diskettes, CDs, or tapes) from the drives, shut down your
operating system, turn off all attached devices, and the computer.
2. Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets.
3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer. This includes power cords,
input/output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connected to the
computer. See “Locating connectors on the front of the computer” on page 2
and “Locating connectors on the rear of the computer” on page 3.
4. Remove any locking devices that secure the computer cover.

5. Remove the two screws on the right side cover, slide the cover to the rear, and
remove.

Removing and replacing the front bezel
To remove and replace the front bezel:
1. Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the computer cover” on page 5.
2. Remove the front bezel by releasing the three plastic tabs inside the chassis and
push the bezel outward as shown.
3. To reinstall the bezel, align the plastic tabs on the bottom of the bezel with the
corresponding holes in the chassis, then snap it into position at the bottom and
top of the chassis.
4. Go to “Completing the installation” on page 29.

Replacing the power supply
Attention:
Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any repair before reading the “Important
safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the
Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer. To obtain copies of the Quick
Reference or HMM,go to the Support Web site at http://www.lenovo.com/think/support.
To replace the power supply:
1. Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the computer cover” on page 5.
Note: For this procedure, it helps to lay the computer on its side.
2. Disconnect the power supply cables from the system board and from all drives.
See “Identifying parts on the system board” on page 4.
3. Remove the four screws that secure the power supply at the rear of the chassis.
4. Lift the power supply out of the chassis.
5. Install the new power supply into the chassis so that the screw holes in the
power supply align with those in the chassis.
6. Install the four screws to secure the power supply.
Note: Use only the screws provided by Lenovo.
7. Reconnect the power supply connectors to the system board.
8. Reconnect apower supply connector to each of the drives.
9. Go to “Completing the installation” on page 29.

Replacing the system board assembly
Attention:
Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any repair before reading the “Important
safety information” in the Quick Reference that was included with your computer or in the
Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the computer. To obtain copies of the Quick
Reference or HMM,go to the Support Web site at http://www.lenovo.com/think/support.
To replace the system board assembly:
1. Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the computer cover” on page 5.
2. Lay the computer on its side.
3. Disconnect the cables connected to the system board. See “Identifying parts on
the system board” on page 4.
Important
Note the cable routing. It is important to route the cables the same way
after you install the new system board.
4. Remove the system fan assembly. See “Replacing the system fan assembly” on
page 25.
5. Remove the screws securing the system board.
6. Lift the system board toward the front of the computer to disengage it from
the mounting tabs and lift it out.
7. Place the defective system board next to the new system board on aclean, flat
surface.

8. Remove the heat sink 1 from the system board by removing the four screws.
Then, carefully lift up the heat sink off the mounting brackets. Place the heat
sink on its side on aclean, flat surface so the thermal material on the bottom
of the heat sink does not touch the surface and become contaminated.
9. Release the lever 3 holding the microprocessor 2 and pivot the
microprocessor retainer 1 until it is open.

10. Using the vacuum pen1,remove the microprocessor from the system board
socket by lifting it straight up and out of the socket.
Important
Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the microprocessor. If
you must touch the microprocessor, touch only the sides.
Notes:
a. Note the orientation of the notches 1 on the microprocessor. This is
important when reinstalling the microprocessor on the new system board.
b. Do not drop anything onto the microprocessor socket while it is exposed.
The socket pins must be kept as clean as possible.

11. On the new system board, release and pivot the locking lever, then pivot the
microprocessor retainer until it is open.
Note: There will be ablack plastic cover on the retainer to protect the
microprocessor socket. As you close the microprocessor retainer, remove the
black plastic cover. Place the black plastic cover on the microprocessor retainer
of the defective system board.
12. Position the microprocessor so that the notches on the microprocessor are
aligned with the tabs in the microprocessor socket.
Important
To avoid damaging the microprocessor contacts, do not tilt the
microprocessor when installing it into the socket.
13. Using the vacuum pen 1,lower the microprocessor straight down into the
microprocessor socket, and secure the microprocessor.
14. Position the heat sink on the heat sink mounting bracket and align the four
holes of the heat sink with the holes on the system board.
