Before ervicing a ThinkCentre computer, be ure to read and under tand Chapter 1 “Important afety
information” on page 1.

Chapter 1. I portant safety infor ation
General safety
Follow the e rule to en ure general afety:
• Ob erve good hou ekeeping in the area of the machine during and after maintenance.
• When lifting any heavy object:
1. En ure you can tand afely without lipping.
2. Di tribute the weight of the object equally between your feet.
3. U e a low lifting force. Never move uddenly or twi t when you attempt to lift.
4. Lift by tanding or by pu hing up with your leg mu cle ; thi action remove the train from the
mu cle in your back.
Attention: Do not attempt to lift any object that weigh more than 16 kg (35 lb) or object that you
think are too heavy for you.
• Do not perform any action that cau e hazard to the cu tomer, or that make the equipment un afe.
• Before you tart the machine, en ure that other ervice repre entative and the cu tomer' per onnel are
not in a hazardou po ition.
• Place removed cover and other part in a afe place, away from all per onnel, while you are ervicing the
machine.
• Keep your tool ca e away from walk area o that other people will not trip over it.
• Do not wear loo e clothing that can be trapped in the moving part of a machine. En ure that your leeve
are fa tened or rolled up above your elbow . If your hair i long, fa ten it.
• In ert the end of your necktie or carf in ide clothing or fa ten it with a nonconductive clip, approximately
8 centimeter (3 inche ) from the end.
• Do not wear jewelry, chain , metal-frame eyegla e , or metal fa tener for your clothing.
Re e ber: Metal object are good electrical conductor .
• Wear afety gla e when you are: hammering, drilling, oldering, cutting wire, attaching pring , u ing
olvent , or working in any other condition that might be hazardou to your eye .
• After ervice, rein tall all afety hield , guard , label , and ground wire . Replace any afety device that
i worn or defective.
• Rein tall all cover correctly before returning the machine to the cu tomer.
CAUTION:
Keep fingers and other parts of your body away fro hazardous, oving parts. If you suffer an injury,
seek edical care i ediately.
CAUTION:
Avoid contact with hot co ponents inside the co puter. During operation, so e co ponents
beco e hot enough to burn the skin. Before you open the co puter cover, turn off the co puter,
disconnect power, and wait approxi ately 10 inutes for the co ponents to cool.

Electrical safety
CAUTION:
Electrical current fro power, telephone, and co unication cables can be hazardous. To avoid
personal injury or equip ent da age, disconnect the attached power cords, teleco unication
syste s, networks, and ode s before you open the co puter covers, unless instructed otherwise
in the installation and configuration procedures.
Ob erve the following rule when working on electrical equipment.
I portant: U e only approved tool and te t equipment. Some hand tool have handle covered with a oft
material that doe not in ulate you when working with live electrical current . Many cu tomer have, near
their equipment, rubber floor mat that contain mall conductive fiber to decrea e electro tatic di charge .
Do not u e thi type of mat to protect your elf from electrical hock.
• Find the room emergency power-off (EPO) witch, di connecting witch, or electrical outlet. If an electrical
accident occur , you can then operate the witch or unplug the power cord quickly.
• Do not work alone under hazardou condition or near equipment that ha hazardou voltage .
• Di connect all power before:
– Performing a mechanical in pection
– Working near power upplie
– Removing or in talling Field Replaceable Unit (FRU )
• Before you tart to work on the machine, unplug the power cord. If you cannot unplug it, a k the cu tomer
to power-off the wall box that upplie power to the machine and to lock the wall box in the off po ition.
• If you need to work on a machine that ha expo ed electrical circuit , ob erve the following precaution :
– En ure that another per on, familiar with the power-off control , i near you.
Re e ber: Another per on mu t be there to witch off the power, if nece ary.
– U e only one hand when working with powered-on electrical equipment; keep the other hand in your
pocket or behind your back.
Re e ber: There mu t be a complete circuit to cau e electrical hock. By ob erving the above rule,
you may prevent a current from pa ing through your body.
– When u ing a te ter, et the control correctly and u e the approved probe lead and acce orie for
that te ter.
– Stand on uitable rubber mat (obtained locally, if nece ary) to in ulate you from ground uch a
metal floor trip and machine frame .
Ob erve the pecial afety precaution when you work with very high voltage ; the e in truction are in
the afety ection of maintenance information. U e extreme care when mea uring high voltage .
• Regularly in pect and maintain your electrical hand tool for afe operational condition.
• Do not u e worn or broken tool and te ter .
• Never assume that power ha been di connected from a circuit. Fir t, check that it ha been powered-off.
• Alway look carefully for po ible hazard in your work area. Example of the e hazard are moi t floor ,
nongrounded power exten ion cable , power urge , and mi ing afety ground .
• Do not touch live electrical circuit with the reflective urface of a pla tic dental mirror. The urface i
conductive; uch touching can cau e per onal injury and machine damage.

• Do not ervice the following part with the power on when they are removed from their normal operating
place in a machine:
– Power upply unit
– Pump
– Blower and fan
– Motor generator
and imilar unit . (Thi practice en ure correct grounding of the unit .)
• If an electrical accident occur :
– U e caution; do not become a victim your elf.
– Switch off power.
– Send another per on to get medical aid.
Safety inspection guide
The intent of thi in pection guide i to a i t you in identifying potentially un afe condition on the e
product . Each machine, a it wa de igned and built, had required afety item in talled to protect u er
and ervice per onnel from injury. Thi guide addre e only tho e item . However, good judgment hould
be u ed to identify potential afety hazard due to attachment of feature or option not covered by thi
in pection guide.
If any un afe condition are pre ent, you mu t determine how eriou the apparent hazard could be and
whether you can continue without fir t correcting the problem.
Con ider the e condition and the afety hazard they pre ent:
• Electrical hazard , e pecially primary power (primary voltage on the frame can cau e eriou or fatal
electrical hock).
• Explo ive hazard , uch a a damaged CRT face or bulging capacitor
• Mechanical hazard , uch a loo e or mi ing hardware
The guide con i t of a erie of tep pre ented in a checkli t. Begin the check with the power off, and the
power cord di connected.
Checkli t:
1. Check exterior cover for damage (loo e, broken, or harp edge ).
2. Power-off the computer. Di connect the power cord.
3. Check the power cord for:
a. A third-wire ground connector in good condition. U e a meter to mea ure third-wire ground
continuity for 0.1 ohm or le between the external ground pin and frame ground.
b. The power cord hould be the appropriate type a pecified in the part li ting .
c. In ulation mu t not be frayed or worn.
4. Remove the cover.
5. Check for any obviou alteration . U e good judgment a to the afety of any alteration .
6. Check in ide the unit for any obviou un afe condition , uch a metal filing , contamination, water or
other liquid , or ign of fire or moke damage.
7. Check for worn, frayed, or pinched cable .

8. Check that the power- upply cover fa tener ( crew or rivet ) have not been removed or tampered
with.
Handling electrostatic discharge-sensitive devices
Any computer part containing tran i tor or integrated circuit (IC ) hould be con idered en itive to
electro tatic di charge (ESD). ESD damage can occur when there i a difference in charge between object .
Protect again t ESD damage by equalizing the charge o that the machine, the part, the work mat, and the
per on handling the part are all at the ame charge.
Notes:
1. U e product- pecific ESD procedure when they exceed the requirement noted here.
2. Make ure that the ESD protective device you u e have been certified (ISO 9000) a fully effective.
When handling ESD- en itive part :
• Keep the part in protective package until they are in erted into the product.
• Avoid contact with other people while handling the part.
• Wear a grounded wri t trap again t your kin to eliminate tatic on your body.
• Prevent the part from touching your clothing. Mo t clothing i in ulative and retain a charge even when
you are wearing a wri t trap.
• U e the black ide of a grounded work mat to provide a tatic-free work urface. The mat i e pecially
u eful when handling ESD- en itive device .
• Select a grounding y tem, uch a tho e li ted below, to provide protection that meet the pecific
ervice requirement.
Note: The u e of a grounding y tem i de irable but not required to protect again t ESD damage.
– Attach the ESD ground clip to any frame ground, ground braid, or green-wire ground.
– U e an ESD common ground or reference point when working on a double-in ulated or battery-
operated y tem. You can u e coax or connector-out ide hell on the e y tem .
– U e the round ground-prong of the ac plug on ac-operated computer .
Grounding require ents
Electrical grounding of the computer i required for operator afety and correct y tem function. Proper
grounding of the electrical outlet can be verified by a certified electrician.

DANGER
Electrical current from power, telephone and communication cable i hazardou .
To avoid a shock hazard:
• Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perfor installation, aintenance, or reconfiguration
of this product during an electrical stor .
• Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet.
• Connect to properly wired outlets any equip ent that will be attached to this product.
• When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
• Never turn on any equip ent when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural da age.
• Disconnect the attached power cords, teleco unications syste s, networks, and ode s
before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration
procedures.
• Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following tables when installing, oving, or
opening covers on this product or attached devices.
To Connect To Disconnect
1. Turn everything OFF.
2. Fir t, attach all cable to device .
3. Attach ignal cable to connector .
4. Attach power cord to outlet.
5. Turn device ON.
1. Turn everything OFF.

3. Remove ignal cable from connector .
4. Remove all cable from device .
CAUTION:
When replacing the lithiu battery, use only Part Nu ber 45C1566 or an equivalent type battery
reco ended by the anufacturer. If your syste has a odule containing a lithiu battery, replace
it only with the sa e odule type ade by the sa e anufacturer. The battery contains lithiu and
can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of. Do not:
• Throw or i erse into water
• Heat to ore than 100°C (212°F)
• Repair or disasse ble
Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.

CAUTION:
When laser products (such as CD-ROMs, DVD-ROM drives, fiber optic devices, or trans itters) are
installed, note the following:
• Do not re ove the covers. Re oving the covers of the laser product could result in exposure to
hazardous laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts inside the device.
• Use of controls or adjust ents or perfor ance of procedures other than those specified herein
ight result in hazardous radiation exposure.
DANGER
So e laser products contain an e bedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following:
Laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the bea , do not view directly with optical
instru ents, and avoid direct exposure to the bea .

Use safe practices when lifting.

The power control button on the device and the power switch on the power supply do not turn off the
electrical current supplied to the device. The device also ight have ore than one power cord. To
re ove all electrical current fro the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected fro the
power source.
