Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is hazardous
To avoid a shock hazard:
• Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration
of this product during an electrical storm
• Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet
• Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to this product
• When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables
• Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage
• Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems
before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and
configuration procedures
• Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when installing, moving, or
opening covers on this product or attached devices

When replacing the lithium battery, use only Part Number 33F8354 or an equivalent type battery
recommended by the manufacturer If your system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace
it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer The battery contains lithium and
can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of Do not:
• Throw or immerse into water
• Heat to more than 100°C (212°F)
• Repair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations

protection. The overall system/rack connection to mains power is to be a Pluggable Type B connector.
This server is suitable or use on an IT power-distribution system whose maximum phase-to-phase voltage is

Chapter 1 The Lenovo System x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 Type
6241 server
Use this in ormation or a product overview o the Lenovo® System x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 server and links
to additional in ormation or users o the system and Business Partners. Read the sa ety in ormation be ore
installing and removing components in the server.
Note: This documentation includes re erences to IBM® web sites, products, and in ormation about
obtaining service. IBM is Lenovo's pre erred service provider or the Lenovo System x products.
The in ormation in this document provides instructions and in ormation or setting up your Lenovo System
x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 Type 6241 server, instructions or installing some optional devices, cabling and
con iguring the server, removing and replacing devices, and diagnostics and troubleshooting in ormation.
Note: The in ormation and installation procedures in this documentation apply to both the 4-socket and the
8-socket con igurations o the server, unless otherwise speci ied. Most o the illustrations in the
documentation show the 4-socket con iguration o the server.
In addition to the instructions in Chapter 2 “Installing optional devices” on page 43 or installing optional
hardware devices, updating irmware and device drivers, and completing the installation, Business Partners
must also complete the steps in “Instructions or Business Partners” on page 43.
The Lenovo System x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 server is a rack model, modular design server, or virtualization,
database, and computational intensive computing. The modular design allows or upgrade rom a 4-socket
(4U-high) to an 8-socket (8U-high) server, using the same building blocks that are used or the 4-socket
server. It is the next generation enterprise server based on the Intel Xeon™ EX E7-4xxx v2/v3/v4 and E7-
8xxx v2/v3/v4 processor technology. This high-per ormance, scalable server is ideally suited or enterprise
environments that require superior input/output (I/O) lexibility and high manageability.
Note: You must purchase the x3950 X6 4-socket to 8-socket Upgrade kit to upgrade to an 8-socket server.
In addition, the upgrade must be per ormed by a Lenovo approved warranty service provider.
Per ormance, ease o use, reliability, and expansion capabilities were key considerations in the design o the
server. These design eatures make it possible or you to customize the system hardware to meet your needs
today and provide lexible expansion capabilities or the uture.
The server comes with a limited warranty. For in ormation about the terms o the warranty and getting service
and assistance, see the Lenovo Warranty document that comes with the server.
The server contains next generation technologies, which help increase per ormance and reliability. For more
in ormation, see “What your server o ers” on page 12 and “Reliability, availability, and serviceability” on
page 17.

The server supports up to eight 2.5-inch hot-swap drives or sixteen 1.8-inch hot-swap drives, or a
combination o both 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch drives, using the supported drive backplanes. It supports 2.5-inch
hot-swap Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or SATA hard disk drives, 2.5-inch hot-swap SATA solid state drives
(SSD), or 1.8-inch hot-swap SAS solid state drives. See “Supported drive backplane con igurations” on page
