The following instructions will help you program your phone. Most phones can be programmed using Automatic

Programming, and included is a list of programming codes and instructions to manually program the handset.

Automatic Programming (Over-The-Air or OTA)

*228 Over The Air Programming for Verizon Retail Customers. Will prompt

the user to choose phone programming or to update roaming capabili-

ties (PRL).

*22800 Over The Air Programming for Verizon Retail Customers. Primarily

used for very old digital phones. Will prompt the user to choose phone

programming or to update roaming capabilities (PRL).

*22890 Over The Air Programming for Verizon Wholesale Customers. Auto-

matically programs the phone. There are no voice prompts.

*22891 Over The Air Programming for Verizon Wholesale Customers. Auto-

matically updates roaming capabilities (PRL). There are no voice

prompts.

Electronic Retrieval of ESNs and Programming Key Sequences

Unless otherwise specified by the Model number, the information below will generally work for all phones made

by that manufacturer. Likewise, key sequences listed for a particular model of phone will generally work for

other phones of the same series.

Also, unless otherwise specified, the information below will generally get you into the manual (NAM)

programming of the phone.

Audiovox Phones

Audiovox generally categorizes phones by families (or series.) Once you know the series, you will be able to

access the NAM for both programming and ESN retrieval.

z800 and CDM-7900

1.Press M # Envelope Key * 1 (within 10 seconds of the phone displaying the main screen.)

2.Scroll to “General” or “Phone Info” and press M.

CDM-4000 and CDM-9000 series

1.Press 2 8 9 Function # 1 (within 10 seconds of the phone displaying the main screen.)

2.Scroll to “General” and press Function.

3.Scroll to ESN.

Almost all others

1.Press ## 200 22 002 End 1

2.Scroll to “Phone Info” and press the appropriate Soft Key.

3.Scroll to ESN and press the appropriate Soft Key.

One other note about Audiovox phones. If the phone is a CDM-4000 or CDM-9000 series, you can determine both

the phone unlock code and the programming unlock code by putting the phone into “Test mode”.

To do this, repeatedly press power while holding down RCL, 2 and *. Once the phone is in “Test mode”, you can

determine the phone unlock code by pressing “1 2 8 Send” or the programming unlock code by pressing “1 2 7

Send”. The code will be the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th digits of the number displayed on the screen.

If the phone is not a CDM-4000 or CDM-9000 series of phone, you can display the phone unlock code by pressing

“# 5625 *” (“# LOCK *”) or by pressing by pressing “# 5625 Send” (“# LOCK Send”) while the phone is locked.

Select the first option to view the code.

Kyocera

Most Kyocera phones allow you retrieve the ESN by going to Menu\Phone Info and scrolling down to view the

ESN. You can also access the ESN in the NAM menu. To enter the NAM menu, perform the following steps:

1.Press 11 11 11 and select “Options”.

2.Select “Programming”. (On newer Kyocera phones, you must first select “Services” before you can select

“Programming”.)

3.Enter the correct Security Code (usually 000 000).

4.Once in the NAM menu, select “ESN” to view the ESN.

Kyocera is one of the few manufacturers that produces several models of single NAM phones. You can tell if the

phone has more than one NAM by the structure of the NAM menu.

As noted above, if the only entries for a NAM are Basic (and Extra) NAM1 Info, then the phone in question is a

single NAM phone.

LG is quickly becoming a very popular phone manufacturer, and along with Nokia,

is becoming one of the first MEID adopters. When an LG phone has an MEID, only

the hexadecimal version will be printed on the label underneath the battery and the

decimal version will be found in the NAM menus. Also, like Audiovox, LG

categorizes its phones by family or series. Most LG phones made in the past 3 years follow the “VX” series of

phones for programming.

Like most other manufacturers, only the key sequence to access the NAM programming differs. Once the key

sequence has been entered, you simply enter the correct Security Code (usually 000 000) and then select “Service

Programming” to enter NAM programming (and the first step in LG NAM programming displays the ESN.)

The second step in LG NAM programming is, usually entering the MDN, followed by entering the MIN, Home SID,

and lastly entering a Label (or name) for the NAM which would be displayed on the screen to identify it when

selecting NAMs. LG, in a fashion very similar to Samsung phones, allows access to NAM2 solely through

Extended NAM1 Settings.

When you have finished basic NAM1 programming on an LG phone, you are given the options of “Exit” or “More”.

To access NAM2 settings you must select “More” and then simply select “OK” until the option to edit NAM2

settings appears.

Key sequences are listed below, and in order of oldest to newest.

LGP versions Press Menu 9.

For example, to program the VX-8550, press

##77647268550 [Send]

The sole exception to LG’s consistency is the LG Migo (pictured at right) which is an actual

working cellular phone designed quite literally for children. To program one of these, you

must press “Yes 1 4 Yes” within 10 seconds of turning the phone on. If successful, the LG

Migo will display “Successful”.

Motorola (ESN Retrieval Only)

If the phone has a Function key, press FCN 00 ** 83 78 66 33 STO # 38 #

•The two digits appearing on the right side of the screen are the first two digits of the Hexadecimal ESN.

•Press * to advance to the next two digits.

•Repeat until you have the whole Hexadecimal ESN.

If the phone has a Menu Key, you will need to find a submenu labeled as “Device

Info”, “Phone Status”, or “Phone Info” (for clarity’s sake, this submenu will be

referred to solely as “Device Info” in this guide.) You will normally find the “Device

Info” submenu in one of the following paths:

•In the Main menu.

•In Main\Settings.

•Once you have found the “Device Info” submenu, navigate to the ESN with this path:

•[Device Info]\Other Information\ESN

•If the phone has both a Menu key and a Function key, try the sequence for the Menu key first. If that doesn’t

work, try the sequence for the Function key.

Motorola (Manual Programming Only)

Manual programming of virtually all Analog Motorola phones is done by pressing the following buttons: FCN 0

000 000 000 000 RCL. If the phone you are working with uses this key sequence, it does not have digital capability

of any kind and should not be activated.

Manual programming of Analog/CDMA Motorola phones can be broken down into three different key sequences

(listed in order from oldest to newest.)

•Press 74663 # 1 FCN FCN

•Press 74663 # Menu Menu

•Press 74663 # CLR CLR

If the ending key sequence is “Menu Menu”, sometimes you will be required to press “Menu Menu” very quickly,

meaning both presses of the Menu button must occur within half a second. Most models of Motorola phones do

not require you to press “Menu Menu” quickly.

Some models of Motorola phones that use these key sequences require the key sequence to be entered within 10

seconds after the phone starts. Most models of Motorola phones do not require you to enter the key sequence in

any set amount of time.

Finally, if you’re the sort of person that enjoys mnemonics, the key sequence “74663” spells “PHONE” on the

keypad (and above, for ESN retrieval, “8378 6633” spells “TEST MODE” on the keypad.)

Manual programming of the Motorola Q, which is a PDA-style of phone similar to the Palm Treo or RIM

Blackberry, is entered by pressing “## 0 73887 * Menu Call” (or “## 0 SETUP *” if you prefer) in the phone dialer

section. This should prompt you for a security code. Once you have reached the “Programming Menu”, select

“User Activation”. From this point, programming the Motorola Q is like programming any other Motorola phone

and is very straightforward. Once you have finished changing values, press “Back Back Exit” to save your changes

and exit NAM programming.

Nokia

Nokia has been extremely consistent with the software on their phones. Retrieving

the ESN can only be done through the NAM programming menu and accessing the

NAM programming menu has not changed since (approximately) 1994. While other

methods exist to access specific sections of NAM1 and NAM2, the key sequence “*

3001 # 12345 #” gives full access to the NAM programming menu.

Once in the NAM programming menu, simply select “Serial Number” to view the ESN or select whichever NAM

you wish to modify.

Once in a particular NAM, modifying the MIN is done by changing “Own Number” or “MIN”. Modifying the Home

SID is done through the “AMPS” section of the NAM programming and modifying the MDN is done by changing

the “Directory Number” in the “Defaults” section or by modifying the entry labeled “MDN”.

Newer Nokia phones have MIN, MDN, and Home SID all listed in the main section of the NAM. Older Nokia

phones only have the MIN in the main section, with Home SID under “AMPS Settings” and the MDN under

“Change Defaults”.

There are two exceptions to the information above. The two exceptions are the Nokia 6315i and the Nokia 6215i,

which are manufactured for Nokia by Pantech and are sometimes known as the Pantech PN-E330 and Pantech

PN-315 respectively (see the entry on Pantech phones for more information.)

Palm One

Palm One, more commonly referred to simply as Palm, makes the Treo series of phones. The Palm Treo is an

impressive PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) that is more computer than phone. Most people who activate this

style of phone do so as SMS Text Messages are easier to enter.

To enter the NAM programming on a Treo, press the following keys: “Phone #*# 000 000 Dial”.

Pantech

Pantech is a relative newcomer to the cellular industry and manufactures phones for Audiovox and Nokia. All

Pantech phones that have been encountered as of this writing utilize either the key sequence “## 200 22 002” (as

discussed in the Audiovox section) to access and program the NAM or ##7764726 Send (##PROGRAM).

RIM (Research In Motion)

RIM makes the popular Blackberry series of phones, which are similar in nature to the Palm Treo and which

many people activate for the same reason.

To enter the NAM programming on a Blackberry, press the following keys: “## 000 000 Send” and then use the

track wheel to “Save”.

Samsung

Samsungs should only be activated if the model number starts with SCH (Samsung CDMA Handset) or SPH

(Samsung PCS Handset). SCH is preferred and generally unlocked, whereas SPH models are usually locked on

Sprint’s network and require flashing before they can be used successfully on

Verizon’s network.

Samsung phones are reasonably consistent when it comes to accessing service

programming in that you are usually accessing one of three options in the menus,

however the key sequence to access those options changes from model to model.

Like most other manufacturers, only the key sequence to access the NAM

programming differs. Once the key sequence has been entered, you simply enter

otherwise specified, simply enter the correct Security Code (usually 000 000) and the ESN should display on the

UT Starcomm

UT Starcomm mostly makes phones for Audiovox but also manufactures under their own name, notably the XV-

6600 PPC and XV-6700.

For the XV-6600 PPC:

1.Touch the “Start” button, to bring down a drop box, and select “Phone” using the stylus. This will bring up

the cellular phone feature on the PPC.

2.Select “Tools” in the drop box, select “Activation Wizard” using the stylus. (This will run you through NAM1

setup.)

3.The PPC will prompt you “Speak with a Customer Care…” at this point select “Next” using the stylus.

4.The PPC will prompt you “If you have already set…” at this point select “Next” using the stylus.

5.The PPC will display the ESN, in Hex format, in the box below you will need to input “000000”.

6.This is the security code to enter the programming mode. (To type in the “000000” using the stylus touch the

box until a scroll appears, then touch the Keypad icon in the lower right hand side of the display. This will

bring up a keypad on the lower portion of the display that you can input values. By touching the Keypad

icon again, the keypad display will be minimized.)

7.After you input the “000000” select “Next”.

For the XV-6700:

1.Touch the “Start” button, to bring down a drop box, and select “Phone Dialer” using the stylus.

2.Dial “## 778” using the stylus and then select “Talk”.

3.This will bring up the option to “Edit”, which allows you to edit the NAM.

For most others, including the CDM-7075, enter ##7764726[Send] and the phone will prompt you for the security

code. If you’re the sort of person that enjoys mnemonics, the key sequence “7764726” spells “PROGRAM” on the

keypad.

Withus

Withus Information & Telecommunications is a little known Korean company that manufactures the WCE-100, a

Single Mode: Digital phone that operates in the 800 MHz band. Listed below is the only known information on the

Withus WCE-100.

Press “# # 948 487 Save” to enter NAM Programming (948487 spells “WITHUS”.)

The ESN will be found somewhere in NAM Programming.

Class Overload This is a number (0-15) that specifies the level of

priority the mobile has when accessing the system.

This parameter was designed to give all users

equal opportunity to access the system in high us-

age situations. There is no relationship between

numbers and priority (i.e., higher numbers do not

necessarily mean higher priority).

1st Paging Channel Primary Paging

Channel A three digit channel number specifying the sys-

tem control channel to start the scan. The initial

channel for system A is 333. The initial paging

channel for system B is 334. Each carrier (A or B)

has 21 paging channels (also called control chan-

nels). The channels for the A carrier start at 333

and end at 313. The paging channels for B carriers

are 334 to 354.

Home SID Determines home area.

This five-digit decimal number identifies the cus-

tomer’s “home” system. The number is sent to the

mobile, by the cell, for the mobile to figure out if it

is in its home system. If the system ID sent by the

cell doesn’t match the phone’s programmed sys-

tem ID, the telephone’s Roam light will display.

Odd numbers generally denote system A and even

numbers are generally used by the B carriers.

Auto Registration Autonomous or
