Congratulations!
Congratulations on your purchase of
Lionel’s Pennsylvania Tender. You
now have the option of running your
Century Club S-2 Stea Turbine engine
with either the original 1946 Lionel
Lines version of the tender which ca e
with your engine, or this Pennsylvania
style tender which was introduced
with the 1948 671Turbine. While the
size of this tender is true to the 1948
version, uch else is new, starting with
all new die cast tooling for the tender
body and fra e in order to provide the
finest surface finish. We have added
separate etal ladder and handrail
details. We have used the latest ver-
sions of our six wheel trucks and added
a die cast water scoop. Your tender has
directional lighting as well as two
green arkers that glow when the
engine is in reverse. And of course, you
have Lionel’s uncouple anywhere
ElectroCoupler on the back of the ten-
der as well as newly ixed Railsounds
recordings and TowerCo announce-
ent when used in conjunction with
your Co and Equipped S-2 Turbine
Engine. The gold printed indicia on the
back of the tender shows that this is a
genuine Century Club product. Enjoy
odel railroading at its finest with

• Your S-2 and Tender are designed to operate on 8-18 volts alternat-
ing current. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-co patible alternating-
current transfor ers are suitable; we reco end the TrainMaster
Co and odel railroad control syste .
• DO NOT POWER W TH D RECT CURRENT (DC). Da age to sensitive
electronic co ponents ay occur.
• When you first power up your track, the S-2 will wait between 3
and 8 seconds as it “listens” for digital language fro the
TrainMaster Co and Base (available separately). When it’s
deter ined that it’s on a conventional (nonCo and) railroad,
the S-2’s headlight will illu inate and Railsounds will fire up. At
this point, the S-2 is in neutral. (This occurs when placing the S-2
on your railroad for the first ti e. Thereafter, it starts in forward
after every three-second power interrupt.)

3Move ‘em out!
• Get your S-2 and tender moving. Press the DIR button on your
CAB-1 re ote or Lionel transfor er. This sequences the Liontech
Co and reverse unit (LCRU2) to the next operating state.
• Adjust track voltage until your S-2 oves at your desired speed.

Transformer operations
Place your S-2 and Pennsylvania Tender on Lionel
or Lionel-compatible O gauge track.
• With track power OFF, connect the loco otive tether between the
engine and tender. The six-pin tender plug connects with the six-
pin receptacle on the loco otive. Connect the drawbar between
loco otive and tender.

Using your tender’s Electrocoupler in the non-Command environment
To use your tender’s Electrocoupler
in the non-Co and environ ent,
you ust first couple a piece of rolling
stock equipped with Lionel agnetic
couplers directly to your tender’s rear
ElectroCoupler. The agnetic coupler
on the rolling stock will then react to the
agnetic field generated by a Lionel
re ote-control track section (available
separately). Place your rolling stock’s
coupler “trigger disc” over the central
coil of a re ote-control track section
and press uncouple on the controller.
The agnetic field pulls the disc down-
ward, and the coupler opens.

or by using a remote-control track section

a rear Electrocoupler that responds
to the COUPLER R (rear) button on your
CAB-1 re ote when operated in the
Train aster Co and environ ent.

powered by track voltage, the

rupted operation and shut-

Your Railsounds system—the basics
Lionel Railsounds is the ost realis-
tic odel railroad sound syste in
the world. Your Pennsylvania Tender
features digital sa ples fro real-life
stea loco otives for the ultimate in
realis .
Begin by installing a 9-volt alkaline bat-
tery in the tender. This ensures interrup-
tion free operation of Railsounds. The
battery is located within the tender and
to access it you will need to re ove the
tender body fro the fra e. Begin by
turning the tender over and re oving
one screw fro each corner of the fra e.
Turn the tender over and re ove the
tender body fro the fra e asse bly.
Snap the battery clip onto the battery
and place it into the rear of the tender
where the built in retainer will hold it in
place. Place the tender body back over
the fra e asse bly, aking sure that
none of the wires are pinched between
the fra e and the body. Turn the tender
back over and secure together with the
four previously re oved screws.
When you first apply track power, the
tenders Railsounds syste produces
sounds of the loco otive at rest. As the
tender oves, turbine “woosh” begins,
increasing with the loco otive’s speed.
To silence the turbine “woosh” (whis-
tle/bell are unaffected), slide the
Railsounds switch, located on the bot-
to of the tender, to the OFF position
be ore powering up the locomotive. The
whistle is activated by using the lever or
button on your transfor er or CAB-1.
The volu e control knob to raise or
lower the level of sound is located on the
botto of the tender.

ber—inside your Lionel S-2 are the
sounds of real-life stea engines. No
other electric train can offer you authentic
S-2 sounds. That’s the power of Lionel.
• Turbine “Woosh”. Your S-2 ’s track
speed deter ines the speed of the
“Woosh”.
• MultiWhistleTM. Different whistles every
ti e—a Railsounds exclusive.
• Authentic bell. Press BELL on your
CAB-1 or transfor er to begin the effect,
again to discontinue. Even the final “hit”
is uted like the real thing.
• Reverse unit reset sound. Power down
your track, wait for 3.5 seconds, and listen
for the air-release sound—that’s the S-2
telling you its Liontech Co and reverse
unit has just reset to orward operation.
• Shutdown sequence. No other odel
railroad sound syste shuts down like
Railsounds. Turn off track power, and
after the air-release reset sound, you have
two seconds to restart your S-2 . If you’re
done with operations, Railsounds will
co ence with an authentic S-2 shut-
down sequence about two seconds after
the air-release reset occurs.

Notes on Railsounds
• Use the volu e control dial, located
on the botto of the tender, to adjust
sound output .
• Listen for incidental engine sounds
during Railsounds operation. They’re
auto atic and, of course, authentic.
• The 9-volt alkaline battery you
installed ensures continuous sounds,
even during short track-power inter-
rupts.
• Longer track-power interruptions
(including loco otive derail ents)
cause Railsounds to shut down after
about 7 seconds.
• For even more authentic Railsounds
effects, operate your S-2 in the
TrainMaster Co and environ ent.
See page 7 for details.

TrainMaster Command operations
Your S-2 in the TrainMaster Command environment
Lionel TrainMaster Co and is the
fun and sophisticated odel rail-
road control syste fro Lionel. Your
S-2 features the Liontech Co and
reverse unit, which acts as both a con-
ventional reverse unit as well as the key
to unlocking any extra features when
you operate in Co and ode.
TrainMaster Co and gives you the
power to operate ultiple Co and-
equipped loco otives on the same track,
at the same time. It’s the ost fun you
can have with electric trains, and it’s
incredibly easy too! Just follow the
directions below and you’ll be on your
way.
TO OPERATE N COMMAND, YOU NEED A
COMMAND BASE AND A CAB-1 REMOTE.
Find the both at your authorized
Lionel retailer.
Place your S-2 on Lionel or Lionel-compatible
O gauge track.
• Make sure track power is OFF before placing it on track.
• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its co uni-
cations wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lionel
transfor er or the U on any of your installed PowerMasters.
• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (on
PowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD).

• Press ENG and 1 on the nu eric keypad of your CAB-1 re ote.
This co and is sent by CAB-1 to the Co and Base, which then
translates your co and into digital code. That code is sent
around your railroad’s outside rails in the for of a digital “halo.”
All Co and-equipped Lionels listen to this digital co unica-
tion, but they do not respond until they hear their own ID nu ber.
• The digital language of TrainMaster Co and—and not track
power—controls the actions of Co and-equipped Lionels. Track
power is si ply like gasoline in the tank of your car—it gives you
the power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where to go or how
fast to get there.
• All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmed with
an D# of “1.” To change your S-2’s ID#, see page 10 .

s oke output when you start running

Tuning your S-2’s performance
SOUND QUALITY
To achieve your preferred Rail-
sounds aster volu e level, use the
volu e control dial located on the
botto of the tender. Turn the dial left
or right to adjust the volu e to your
liking.
For quick re ote-control of volu e
below the aster setting—like ut-
ing—use the CAB-1 nu eric keypad’s
volu e control. Pressing AUX1 and
then 4 on the nu eric keypad lowers
overall Railsounds output.
TrainMaster Command operations
As your fleet of Co and-equipped
Lionels grows, give your S-2 loco-
otive its own ID#. Choose fro any
between 1 and 99. Turn the Co and
Base ONand place the loco otive on
track. Power up, then slide the loco o-
tive’s reverse unit control switch to PRO-
GRAM.
Using CAB-1, press ENG, the loco o-
tive ID#, then press the SET button locat-
ed under CAB-1’s re ovable panel. See
the loco otive’s headlight flash; that’s
your signal that the progra ing has
been accepted. Slide the control switch to
RUN.

by another engine. If you like write
the nu ber on a s all piece of tape
and put this on the botto of the
fra e to aid in re e bering.
