What does the NightWatch detect?
The NightWatch aims at detecting nocturnal clinically urgent
epilepsy seizures. During the night’s rest of the person suffering from
epilepsy (hereafter: the wearer), the surroundings can be alarmed
when an ‘urgent seizure’ takes places. This includes tonic-clonic,
prolonged tonic and hyper motoric seizures.
The NightWatch continuously monitors the movements and the
heartbeat of the wearer. The device is meant to function during sleep
and only gives an alarm when the wearer is lying down.
In case of most adults, the NightWatch gives an alarm in regard to
many clinically urgent seizures. Furthermore, when the alarm occurs,
the tests show that up until now in more than half of the events
indeed there is an urgent attack. However, it may occur that the
NightWatch functions less well. In most of those instances, too many
false alarms take place. Causes are too much mobility, sleep that
is too light, and a raise of the heart rate because of for instance a
nightmare.
The NightWatch is developed to detect as many clinically urgent
seizures as possible and with the ‘right’ wearers performs consider-
ably better than the systems available to date. The highly sensitive
set-up also implies that sometimes false alarms may be expected.

7
Bracelet: arm module and strap
The arm module is the device that is placed on the upper arm
(between biceps and shoulder). With the help of the two green
LEDs on the dark grey side of the arm module, the heart rate is reg-
istered. Next to that, the arm module registers movement.
This way the arm module is able to detect an epileptic seizure and
subsequently sends a signal to the alarm unit.
On the dark grey side of the arm module a slide knob is situated
which with a pen can be placed from one to the other position.
This has to be done one time only while putting the NightWatch to
use, activating the arm module. This activation is confirmed by the
two heart rate LEDs lighting up. After this, one may connect the arm
module to the charger.
The white side of the arm module contains one red and one green
LED, which give an array of signals.
Alarm unit
The white square box is the alarm unit that delivers both light and
sound signals. The alarm unit can be placed anywhere in the house
near a socket. Please make sure that the alarm signal can be heard
well.

Signals of the arm module and the alarm unit
The arm module and the alarm unit give light signals,
which the alarm unit supports with sound.
Hereunder these signals are explained.
a. Arm module and alarm unit are similar
One green LED burns continuously
• Everything is ok: good connection between arm module and alarm
unit, heartbeat is detected, battery power ok.
RING
Red LED blinks fast (and alarm unit rings)
• Alarm, clinically urgent seizure detected.
(You may turn off the alarm by pushing one of the knobs on the
alarm unit.)
BEEP
Red LED blinks slowly (and alarm unit beeps)
• Arm module has been taken off the charger, heartbeat not
detected yet.
This signal stops as soon as the NightWatch detects the heart-
beat after the bracelet is put on the wearer. In order to have the
arm module pick up the heartbeat sooner, keep the arm still.
• More than 30 seconds no detection of heartbeat and movement.
This happens for instance when the bracelet is not on the arm of
the wearer anymore or when the arm module has not been
connected to the charger. Go to the wearer and put the bracelet
back on or connect the arm module to the charger. The signal
stops by itself when a heartbeat is detected again or when the
arm module is being charged.
• More than 2 minutes detection of movement, but not of heartbeat.
Go to the wearer and place the bracelet on the right spot or make
the bracelet a bit tighter. When the wearer subsequently keeps
the arm still, the arm module will ‘find’ the heartbeat within 15
seconds. After this the signal stops and the LED turns to
continuous green.
2 BEEPS 2 BEEPS 2 BEEPS
Red LED blinks repeatedly twice fast
(and alarm unit beeps twice)
• No connection between alarm unit and arm module.

9
The alarm module and the alarm unit are too far apart.
Position the alarm unit closer. If this does not solve the problem,
the NightWatch is defective.
4 BEEPS 4 BEEPS 4 BEEPS
Red LED blinks repeatedly four times fast
(and alarm unit beeps four times)
• Battery of arm module is empty.
The NightWatch cannot be used anymore this night. Connect the
arm module to the charger. If the next morning the arm module
still is not charged, it is defective.
b. Specifics arm module
Green LED burns continuously
• (Off the charger:) Everything is ok, heartbeat is registered, con-
nection is ok, battery power is ok. or
• (On the charger:) Fully charged, battery power is ok.
Green LED blinks
• (Off the charger:) Arm module in vertical position and / or (normal)
movement. or
• (On the charger:) Arm module is charging.
c. Specifics alarm unit
Orange LED burns continuously
• The alarm unit is connected to electricity grid.
One green LED burns continuously and
a second green LED blinks
• The arm module is connected to the charger and still is charging.
Two green LEDs burn continuously
• The arm module is connected to the charger and is charged fully.
One green LED blinks
• The arm module is in a vertical position and/or detects (normal)
movement.
The wearer sits upright and/or is out of bed, or is moving the
arm. The consequence of this is that the NightWatch is not able
to detect a seizure. Once the wearer lies down and/or keeps the
arm still again, the signal will stop by itself.

Alarm unit: operate the alarm sound
Buttons ‘a’ and ‘b’
These buttons allow the following:
• Press one of these buttons (it does not matter which one) for
about two seconds while the seizure alarm goes off if you want to
shut off the sound.
NOTE: the technical alarm may be made softer, but cannot
be shut off totally.
• Use the buttons to adjust the volume of both the seizure alarm
and the technical alarm. Press on button ‘a’ or ‘b’. You will hear the
sound of the alarm once. Press another time on ‘a’ (‘louder’) or ‘b’
(‘softer’) to adjust the sound. Repeat this to your liking.
NOTE: do not turn the sound down so much that you risk
not hearing it in case of a seizure alarm.

Putting the NightWatch into use
a. Customizing the bracelet
Required:
• strap
• 2 strap clips
• arm module
• pencil
• sharp (textile) scissors / stanley knife and cutting board
The bracelet, consisting of the strap and the arm module, must be
made to fit for the wearer. The bracelet should not be too tight, but
should at the same time ensure that the arm module is firmly placed
on the skin.
Measure with the strap the perimeter of the arm of the wearer above
the biceps, while the arm is bent. Do not stretch the strap. Mark with
the pencil the point where the overlap starts.
Cut the strap at the marking point.
Attach the two clips on the strap as depicted below.
1Measure the contour of your forearm
without stretching the strap.
Bend your arm when you measure.

12
Attach each clip in the fissure of the arm module from white side to
dark gray side, have the strap stick out at the dark gray side of the
arm module.
Put the bracelet on the arm of the wearer and observe how the
bracelet fits. Probably the bracelet will be a little too loose.

1) Tear out the strap upwards.
2) Push the clips out of the device from behind.
3) Adjust the clips on the strap to make it shorter or wider.
4) Click the clips into the fissures again.
NOTE: the arm module must be positioned directly on the
skin of the wearer. When the wearer wears a pajama jacket
or another garment with sleeves, make sure that the sleeve
is wide enough to wear the bracelet underneath.
Adjust the bracelet until the arm module is positioned firmly on the
skin and at the same time is comfortable for the wearer. This is a
matter of trial and error. It is no problem if after the night the arm
module gives a slight imprint on the arm of the wearer, as long as
this imprint vanishes after 5 to 10 minutes.
NOTE: the strap is meant to keep sticking out a little.
The strap is very soft and the wearer will not feel it. This
sticking out is needed to be able to make the bracelet a lit-
tle tighter on a later moment, might this become necessary.

b. First activation and charging arm module
The first activation is a one-time action:
• Take a pen / pencil.
• On the dark gray side of the arm module you see a slide knob.
Using the pen / pencil, slide this knob to the middle of the module.
This activates the arm module.
• You now see 2 bright green LEDs light up on the dark grey side.
These are the LEDs that monitor the heartbeats.
Charge: before each use, the arm module must be totally charged.
This process may last up to 12 hours. Connect the charger to the
arm module and put the plug in the socket. The arm module must
always be on the charger when not in use. It cannot be over-
charged.
As soon as you put the arm module on the charger, the heartbeat
LEDs on the dark grey side stop burning and the green LED on the
white side starts to blink. This indicates that charging is happening.
When the arm module is fully charged, the green LED burns contin-
uously.
NOTE: Always keep the arm module on the charger until
use. The arm module will start to detect as soon as it is
disconnected from the charger.

c. Putting the alarm unit into use
Connect the arm module to the charger.
Connect the power supply to the alarm unit, walk to the spot where
you want to receive the alarm and put the plug in the socket. Now
the orange LED on the alarm unit will start to burn. This means that
the alarm unit has power.
Next a green LED will start to continuously burn (‘arm module is on
charger’) and a second green LED will start to blink (‘battery of arm
module is charging’). When the arm module is fully charged, both
green LEDs burn continuously.
The system now is ready for use.
d. Daily use
• Roll up the sleeve of the wearer.
• Take the arm module from the charger. The two bright green LEDs
on the dark grey side start to burn.
• The red LED on the white side of the arm module starts to blink,
indicating that no heartbeat is detected yet.
• Put the bracelet on the upper arm of the wearer. Put it on the front
of the biceps so the wearer will not lie on it when he/she is lying
on one side.
• Wait until the green LED on the white side of the arm module
burns continuously. This indicates that the NightWatch as of now
is detecting seizures.
• Put the sleeve back over the bracelet.
See ‘Signals of the arm module and the alarm unit’ for signals and
what to do to solve problems.
NOTE: do not wash the NightWatch with water.
You may clean it with a cloth and some alcohol.

e. Connecting arm module and alarm unit
The arm module and the alarm unit are connected with each other
on delivery. In case you receive a new arm module or alarm unit due
to a defect, you may as follows again connect both devices.
New arm module or alarm unit
1. Make sure that the arm module and the alarm unit are in the
same room and that they are not connected to a power supply.
2. Turn the arm module on using the slide knob and check whether
the LED on the arm module is orange. NOTE: the LED on the
arm module does not shine very bright.
2.1. If the LED on the arm unit is not orange: switch the arm
unit OFF and ON again, then throw the arm module three
times + 1 meter in the air and catch it. The LED on the arm
module should turn orange now. If this does not happen,
please try this step again. If the LED turns orange, perform
step 2.2.
2.2. If the LED on the arm unit is orange: connect the power
supply of the alarm unit and wait for it to start up (30
seconds). After startup, hold both buttons of the alarm unit
simultaneously for 10 seconds. A couple of seconds after
you release the buttons, the alarm unit and the new arm
module will be connected.
3. Put the arm module on, make sure that it makes good contact
with your skin and lay down. Check whether the LED on the
module and/or alarm unit stays continually green to make sure
the system is active. After this, put the arm module on the
charger to stop the system.
