Component Descriptions
• Lighting Zone Controller (LZC)
- Supplies power and control signal to Lutron 3-wire fluorescent dimming ballasts and fixtures.
- Switches a maximum of 16 A of incandescent, electronic low-voltage, magnetic low-voltage, neon/cold cathode,
fluorescent, HID, and motor loads (1/3 HP @ 120 V , 1/2 HP @ 277 V ).
- Dims a maximum of 16 A of fluorescent light load using Lutron’s 3-wire phase control dimming ballasts, based
on information from the Digital microWATT server or eLumen manager, occupant and daylight sensors, and
wallstations or control station devices; other load types can be dimmed using an interface.
- See “Models Available” table on front cover for individual product ratings.
• Wall Control
- Allows occupants to manually turn on or off those lights controlled by the LZC, or to dim and brighten the lights.
• Occupant Sensor
- Allows the LZC to dim the lights to a predetermined level or turn off the lights when the occupant sensor detects
an unoccupied area.
- The LZC will automatically turn the lights back on when the occupant sensor detects that the area has become
occupied again.
• Daylight Sensor
- Allows the LZC to subtly and automatically change the light level as the daylight sensor detects changes in the
availability of sunlight in the area.

Mounting the LZC1
• Mount the DMW-LZC1 onto a 4 x 4 in. (102 x 102 mm)
standard (1900) junction box (not included, but
available; Lutron part number 241-496).
• Mount the unit indoors with ambient temperature
between 32 °F and 104 °F (0 °C and 40 °C) and
humidity <90% (non-condensing).
• Mount on a vertical or horizontal surface (i.e., ceiling).
All power wire connections will be made in the junction
box. All PELV (Class 2: USA) wire connections must be
made within the front cover of the unit.
• Mount the unit where audible noise is acceptable
(internal relays click).
Note: Mounting the unit above the ceiling at the
entrance of the room will simplify locating the unit for
future maintenance or troubleshooting.

This page applies to:
LZC1
Wiring
Wiring the LZC1 in Bypass
Bypass wiring is a TEMPORARY wiring scheme to test
the dimming ballast wiring without using the LZC
control. If there is a wiring problem or a short in the
circuit, this will prevent damage to the LZC.
• The lighting zone controller accepts any 100 to 277
V (50 or 60 Hz) line feed. The electronic fluorescent
ballasts, however, must be rated for the specific line
voltage that feeds the lighting zone controller.
• Make the appropriate wire connections for your ballast
type following the wiring diagram below.
Danger! Locate and lock the supply breaker
in the OFF position, or remove the supply
fuse before continuing.
Danger! Proper short-circuit and overload
protection must be provided at the
distribution panel. You can use a 20 A
maximum circuit breaker for your installation.
Testing the Circuit in Bypass
• Turn the input power ON after assuring that it is safe
to do so. Lights should go to full ON while in bypass.
If lights do not go to full ON, check ballast and lamp
wiring.
• Once the ballast and lamp wiring are tested, turn the
input power back OFF at the supply breaker.

Wiring the LZC1 for Dimmable Loads
• Turn Power OFF.
• The lighting zone controller accepts any 100 to 277 V
(50 or 60 Hz) line feed. The electronic fluorescent
ballasts, however, must be rated for the specific line
voltage that feeds the lighting zone controller.
• Remove the bypass wiring connections previously made.
• Connect the input feed wires and the output load wires to
the lighting zone controller as indicated in the wiring
diagram below.
• Once the wiring is complete, mount the LZC on the
junction box.

Panel Wiring: General Notes
See the following two pages for details on wiring loads
to the small and standard panels.
• The only dimmed loads that can be connected directly
to an LZC panel are fluorescent fixtures containing
Lutron Hi-lume®or Eco-10TM ballasts. Other dimmable
load types (120 V only) require the use of a load
interface available from Lutron. For wiring information
refer to the instructions supplied with the load interface.
• All line voltage connections to the loads must be made
using the load wiring terminal blocks located on the
right hand side of the panel. There are up to 24 sets of
terminal blocks, each containing an orange, red, black,
green/yellow, and two white terminal blocks. Each set
of terminal blocks is connected to a particular LZC. The
number of each LZC is listed on the terminal block
label.
Wiring dimmed loads:
• DIMMED HOT connects to the orange terminal block.
If there are no dimmed loads, DO NOT connect any wires
to the orange terminal block.
• SWITCHED HOT connects to the red terminal block
• GROUND connects to the green/yellow terminal block
• NEUTRAL connects to the white terminal block
Wiring switched loads (see page 10 for compatible loads):
• SWITCHED HOT connects to the red terminal block.
• GROUND connects to the green/yellow terminal block.
• NEUTRAL connects to the white terminal block

16 Installation Guide for Lighting Zone Controllers
Activating Loads in Bypass
A. Complete load and feed wiring.
See previous sections.
B. Check that the bypass jumpers are in place.
These jumpers protect from load faults and must
be used to check load wiring when it is installed
or modified.
Caution! Verify that the panel is fed from the
correct voltage. A feed miswire or loss of a
feed neutral can cause damage to the
equipment.
C. Turn circuit breaker 1 ON.
Large panels with main lugs have circuit
breakers integral to the panel; circuit breakers
for other panels are in distribution panels.
When power is turned on, the load(s) should
energize, the breaker should not trip, and total
load current must be within the circuit breaker's
limit and less than or equal to 16 A.
In a main lug panel, circuit breaker 1 powers
Circuit 1's LZC and load(s). Check that the
Power LED on the LZC is ON. If the Power LED
is OFF, turn OFF the control circuit breaker
(breaker 1) and check for loose wires or
miswires in the panel.
D. Turn next circuit breaker ON.
The corresponding load should energize, the
breaker should not trip, and total load current
must be within the circuit breaker's limit and less
than or equal to 16 A. The power LED on the
corresponding LZC should be on.
E. Repeat step ‘D’ for each circuit with
completed load wiring.

Removing Bypass Jumpers
A. After all load wiring has been checked, turn
circuit breakers OFF.
B. Use the tool provided to remove the bypass
jumpers and store them for possible future use.
(Removal is shown at right.)
C. Turn circuit breakers ON.
Note: Re-use the bypass jumpers whenever
work is being done on a load. Damage
caused by short-circuits and miswiring is not
covered by the product warranty.

Addressing
Locating the Address Switches
Every lighting zone controller (LZC) must be given a
unique address at the time of installation for the system to
work properly. Using the table on the next page, set
address switches to match addresses shown in Lutron-
supplied drawings. If your system drawings are not clear,
contact Lutron before installing.

Notes
• Address each lighting zone controller in the link as
detailed on the next page.
• For switching only (non-dimming) controllers, switch 8
must be in the ON position.
• All switches in the OFF position takes the LZC offline
and prevents it from communicating with the system.
• Lighting zone controllers are typically described in
system drawings and documentation using their
router panel or GRAFIK 7000P processor address,
followed by their unit address.
For example, 5A7 represents a lighting zone
controller on router panel or GRAFIK 7000P
processor 5, link A, unit address 7.

• The maximum number of LZCs per link is 63. Panels
contain more than one LZC; take into account the
number of LZCs per panel when calculating LZCs on
each link.
• Wire colors shown assume GRX-CBL-46L is used.
The orange wire is unused.
• The LZC link is considered PELV (Class 2: USA). Do
