Chapter 2, Connecting and Using Matrox DS1
Connecting DS1 to your computer
Matrox DS1 utilizes Thunderbolt technology to connect to your computer.
Supply power to Matrox DS1 (see “Powering Matrox DS1” on page 4), and then
connect a standard Thunderbolt cable between the Thunderbolt ports on your
computer and DS1. In a daisy-chain setup, Matrox DS1 is the last device in your
Thunderbolt chain.
Matrox DS1 is a hot-swappable device, which means that you can
connect/disconnect DS1 to/from your computer without having to perform a
system reboot. When your computer is connected to DS1, all peripheral devices
connected to DS1 are automatically detected by your Mac system.

DS1’s HDMI/DVI output is the primary monitor. When you disconnect DS1
from your computer, your computer’s display settings return to default settings.
When re-connecting DS1 to your computer, the display settings that were

appears as Thunderbolt Ethernet Slot in System Preferences > Network. If
your network connection goes through a proxy server, select Thunderbolt
Ethernet Slot in Network preferences, and then set the appropriate proxy
settings in the Advanced options. If a network cable is connected to DS1’s
Gigabit Ethernet port and another network cable is connected to an Ethernet port
on your computer, the network connected directly to your computer is used.
¦NoteThe DS1 Gigabit Ethernet port supports wake-on-LAN (WOL).
USB
Matrox DS1 includes two USB 2.0 ports for connecting USB devices such as a
keyboard, mouse, printer and scanner. DS1 also features one front-mounted USB
3.0 port for connecting a SuperSpeed device, such as a flash drive or storage.
¦NoteThe DS1 USB ports support wake-on-USB.
Audio
Matrox DS1 features one audio input (mono) and one audio output (stereo).
To set DS1 as your system’s audio input/output, in System Preferences >
Sound, select USB audio CODEC as the input and/or output. If your computer
uses a discrete graphics card (non-integrated graphics card), and an HDMI
monitor is connected to DS1 (DS1/HDMI only), you can select the HDMI
monitor as the audio output for your system by selecting the monitor from the
sound settings. When you disconnect DS1 from your computer, your computer’s
sound settings return to default settings. When re-connecting DS1 to your
computer, the sound settings that were specified when DS1 was last connected
are restored.
