FCC I formatio
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), with its
action in General Docket 93-62, November 7, 1997, has
adopted a safety standard for human exposure to Radio
Frequency (RF) electromagnetic energy emitted by FCC
regulated equipment. Topaz3 / TruTalk subscribes to the
same safety standard for the use of its products. Proper
operation of this radio will result in user exposure far below
the Occupational Safety and Health ct (OSH ) and Federal
Communications Commission limits.
CAUTION - DO NOT transmit for more than 50% of
total radio use time (50% duty cycle).
Transmitting more than 50% of the time
can cause FCC RF exposure compliance
requirements to be exceeded.
When transmitting, hold the radio in a vertical position
with its microphone 2 inches (5 cm) away from your
mouth. Keep the antenna at least 2 inches (5 cm) from
your head and body.
This device has been approved for use, at a maximum
duty factor of 50%, using the specific belt clip tested for
body-worn S R compliance. Other belt clips or body-worn
accessories may not comply and should be avoided.

The radio is transmitting when the transmit (TX) icon
appears on the LCD display. You can cause the radio
to transmit by pressing the P-T-T bar on the radio.
These are required operating configurations for meeting
FCC RF exposure compliance. Failure to observe these
restrictions mean violation.

not expressly approved in writing may cause harmful
interference and void the user's authority to operate
this equipment.

About Your TK14-VWX
Family Radio Service (FRS) is the newest generation in
personal two-way communications. No license is required
for FRS radio operation - the radios provide communication
on any of the 14 license-free UHF channels dedicated to
such use.
The TK14-VWX is a lightweight, compact two-way radio
that can be used for communicating with family or friends
at parks, shopping malls, sporting events, concerts or any
indoor or outdoor activity.
Providing up to two mile range, the TK14-VWX is compatible
with other two-way radios using the FRS frequency band
(462.5625 MHz to 467.7125 MHz). dditional features

Removi g / Attachi g the Belt Clip
To remove the belt clip, pull and hold the
tab located at the top of the belt clip.
Slide the belt clip down, and
off the radio.
To re-attached the belt clip,
align clip sides with rails on
the radio back and slide the clip
upward until it locks into place.

Note: Use only " " alkaline, rechargeable Ni-Cad or
TruTalk CC-214 Rechargeable NiMH Battery Pack in the
TK14-VWX. Other types of batteries may burst, causing
injury to persons and / or damage to the radio unit. lways
remove the batteries or battery pack from the radio if it
will not be used for long periods of time.
1. Remove the radio belt clip and locate the battery cover
latch (near the base of the radio on back). Move the latch
downward to unlock.
2. Gently lift the battery cover up and away from the
battery compartment.
3. Install four (4) fresh " " alkaline, rechargeable Ni-Cad
batteries or TruTalk CC-214 rechargeable NiMH
battery pack into the compartment. Follow the polarity
diagram embossed in the
compartment base(or label
on battery pack).
4. Reinstall the battery cover,
lock the latch and re-attach
the belt clip.

To power the Radio ON:
Press a d hold the PWR (power) butto o the fro t
of the TK14-VWX for approximately 2 seco ds. tone
will sound indicating the unit is receiving power. The radio's
LCD panel will display a self-test
and then go into operational
mode, showing the current
radio function settings. The
LCD appears like this or similar.
Power the Radio OFF:
Press a d hold the PWR butto for approximately
2 seco ds. The LCD panel will go dim to confirm the radio
is off.
Adjusti g the Speaker Volume - With the radio on, press
the UP (I) button to increase volume; the DOWN (J)
button to decrease volume. The volume level indicator icon
will change to reflect your setting. There are 12 possible
levels.
Special NOTE: When using the TruTalk speaker microphone
accessories, ensure the volume level is at the lowest setting,
then increase gradually until a comfortable level is achieved.
(See page 20).

Selecti g a Cha el - Press and release the MODE / LOCK
button 1 time or until the CH N icon flashes on the LCD
panel. Select the desired channel by pressing the UP (I) or
DOWN (J) button. When the desired channel is displayed,
press and release the P-T-T button to select the channel. If
no selection has been made after 5 seconds, the radio will
save the displayed channel and return to operation mode.
To exit without saving your last setting, press and release
the WX button.
Selecti g a "Private Talk" Sub-Cha el -
Press and release the MODE button 2 times or until the
SUB icon and CH N icon flash on the LCD panel. Select the
desired sub-channel by pressing the UP (I) or DOWN (J)
button. When the desired sub-channel is displayed, press
and release the P-T-T button to select it. If no selection has
been made after 5 seconds, the unit will save the displayed
channel and sub-channel then return to operational mode.
To exit without saving your last setting, press and release
the WX button.
Receivi g a Call - The radio is continuously in receiving
(RX) mode when powered on. When you receive a call on the
current channel, the (RX) indicator icon (located on right
side of LCD panel) will display.

Tra smitti g a Call - To reply to a received message, or
initiate a new message, press and hold the P-T-T button on
the left side of the TK14-VWX. For the best results, speak
at a normal rate and tone, the radio's TX indicator icon
will appear while you are speaking to confirm that you are
transmitting.
Se di g a Call To e - You can send an audible tone to
alert another radio user that you are getting ready to
transmit to, or to help you identify yourself. Simply press
and release the WX button The call tone will be transmitted
to others on your current channel and sub-channel setting.
Power Save Mode - To conserve battery life, the
TK14-VWX will go into a power save mode after 6 seconds
without a received (RX) message signal. If a button press
is made, or an incoming message received, the radio will
automatically return to operational mode. NOTE: There is
no LCD display indicator for power save mode.
Mai Cha el Sca i g - To provide a quick search for
all channel activity, activate the radio's scan function by
pressing and releasing the MODE / LOCK button three times
or until the icon CH N and SC N flash together. Press and
release the UP (I) or DOWN (J) button to initiate scan
of all main channels. If an incoming message is detected,
the radio will stop scanning and lock onto the active channel

for 3 seconds after channel activity has stopped. This will
provide you the opportunity to reply to the message if desired.
If no reply is transmitted, the radio will resume scanning.
To reply to the incoming message, press and release the
P-T-T button to stop the channel scan, then press and hold
the P-T-T button while speaking into microphone.
To remain on the active channel, and stop scanning, press
the P-T-T button. The radio scan sequence will stop on the
current channel. If you wish to return to another channel,
follow instructions for Selecting a Channel. If you wish to
re-activate scan, repeat the steps above.
"Private Talk" Sub-Cha el (CTCSS) Sca i g -
To provide a quick search for sub-channel activity (from a
single main channel), press and release the MODE / LOCK
button four times or until the SUB CH N and SC N icons
flash. Press and release the UP (I) or DOWN (J) button.
The radio will begin to scan the sub-channels. If an incoming
message is detected, the radio will stop scanning and lock
onto the active sub-channel for 3 seconds after channel
activity has stopped. This will provide you the opportunity
to reply to the message if desired. If no reply is transmitted,
the radio will resume scanning.

To reply to the incoming message, press and release the
P-T-T button to stop the channel scan, then press and hold
the P-T-T button while speaking into microphone.
To remain on the active channel, and stop scanning, press
the P-T-T button. The radio scan sequence will stop on the
current channel. If you wish to return to another channel,
follow instructions for selecting a channel. If you wish to
re-activate scan, repeat the steps above.
Beep To e (ON / OFF) - You may set an audible tone to
occur when any button (except the P-T-T) is pushed. To
activate, press the MODE / LOCK button five times or until
the icon flashes in upper left corner of LCD panel. Press
the UP (I) or DOWN (J) button to toggle the beep tone
on or off (the word "ON" or "OFF" will appear above the
battery level icon). Press and release the P-T-T button to
select. The icon will become solid to confirm the beep
tone is active (ON). To turn off the beep tone, follow
previous steps but toggle to the word "OFF" (off setting).
Press and release the P-T-T button to select, or press
and release the WX button to cancel and return to the
operational mode.
Special NOTE: It is recommended that the beep tone be
turned off when using the TruTalk speaker microphone
accessories. (See page 20).
