1. General:
TheBR20magneticstripecardreaderisdesignedforreadingstandardorhigh-coercivitymagneticstripecards.The
BR20alsoprovidesa12-keykeypadforPINentryandprovidesaTTLinterface. Thefollowingparagraphsdescribe
instructions for installing and maintaining the card reader. The BR20 does not support the tamper switch option.
2. Mounting the Reader:
Findasuitablelocationtoanchorthereadermountingbracket. Thereadermaybemountedverticallyorhorizontally.
Seerecommendedorientation. Themountingofthereaderdoesnotrequireajunctionbox. However,rigidconduit
isrequired foroutdoor application. Asingle gangjunction boxmay be usedto providea transitionto rigidconduit.
Ifasinglegangjunctionboxisused,awallplate(optional)maybeusedtocoverthejunctionbox. Thereaderisthen
securedtothemountingbracketusingascrew. Refertofiguresforreaderdimensionsandtypicaljunctionboxusage.

3. Reader Wiring:
ThereaderhasaRJ-11modularjackforeasyfieldconnection. Ashortpieceofpre-terminatedcableissuppliedwith
eachstandardreaderforfieldwiring. Thepre-terminatedcablehasnonstandardcolor. Refertopinnumberifthepre-
terminatedcable isnot used. Cable withwires of24AWG or larger are recommendedfor fieldwiring.
4. Connecting the Keypad:
TheBR20 providesa12-keykeypadforPINentry.Theflextailofthekeypadisconnectedtotheelectronicboardvia
a ZIF (zero insertion force) connector. The contacts are engaged/disengaged by a moving slide. Care must be
exercisedwhenconnectinganddisconnectingthekeypad.Whenconnectingthekeypadtotheboard,opentheslide
asshown.InserttheelectronicsintothehousingandinsertflextailintheZIFconnector.Then,closetheslidetoengage
the contacts. To disconnect the keypad, follow the previously described steps in reverse.
5. Weather Proofing the Reader:

The reader is rated to operate over an extended
temperaturerangeandtheelectronicsareconformal
coatedagainstmoisture. Ifthereaderisexpectedto
beexposedtoweather,usethedielectricgreaseto
coat the field connections. After field connection/
configurationismade,thegreaseistobeappliedon
the DIP switch slides, keypad connection, and the
RJ-11 jack to seal out moisture.
Do not use sealant to seal reader case to the
wall.Doingsowilltrapwaterinthereaderandmay
causedamagetothereader.
6. TTL Interface:
TheTTLinterfacehasthestandard5-wireinterfacewidelyusedintheaccesscontrolapplication.Inaddition,aninput
to control the buzzer is provided. Cable with minimum of 24AWG wires should be used.

7. Grounding the Reader:
Toavoid havingESD(electrostaticdischarge)interferingwiththeoperationofthereader,thereadercasingshallbe
grounded.Thiscanbeaccomplishedbytyingthemountingbrackettoearthgroundlocally(e.g.grounded conduit).
8. DIP Switch Setting:
TheDIP switch on the BR20reader is used to selecta preset format, the functionsfor the LED and buzzer,and the
outputsignalformat,etc.Thepresetformatdetermineshowthecardisinterpreted.Refertotheformatspecification
fordetail. The settings are for STANDARD modelsONLY. The BR20 does not support the tamperswitch option.

9. BR20 Standard Format Code Summary:
Thefollowingformatsare supportedinstandardmodels(31002-8000/31012-8000).
Unless otherwise indicated, the LED input line controls both LEDs (low=green, high=red); the BUZZER input
controls the buzzer (low = activate); a good read is signaled by a flash of the green LED; a bad read is signaled
by a flash of the red LED and a double beep of the buzzer.

10. Keypad Data Signaling:
Keypad data is transmitted on the data lines as 8-bit blocks. They are encoded and sent using the same signaling
methodasselectedforthecarddataoutput(clock/dataordata1/data0). IfDorado8-bitkeypaddataformatisrequired
orderthe-K1option. Carddata,andkeypaddatablocksareseparatedbyaminimumof100milliseconds.Seefollowing

11. Reader Verification:
Thereaderperformsaself-testwhenpowerisfirstappliedtotheunit.Ifpower-ontestissuccessfullycompleted,the
readerwillturnon both LEDsforapproximately1 second andsoundthebuzzer for 1shortbeep.Then thereaderis
readyfornormaloperation.
Iffurtherverificationofthereaderhardwareisneeded,thereadermaybetemporarilysettoformat3.Withthisformat
selected,thereader willreadand verifystandardANSI track2encoded card.Ifno readerroris detected,the green
LEDwill flash. Otherwise, the redLED will flashand the buzzer will soundtwo short beepsto indicate an error. The
LEDinput can beused toverify the LEDfunction; andthebuzzer inputfor thebuzzerfunction. Thereader willecho
a key press with a brief flash of both LEDs and a short beep of the buzzer. Reset to the required format for normal
operationaftertest.
12. Maintenance:
Thereaderisdesignedtoprovidecontinuousservicewithminimalroutinemaintenance.However,contaminants(such
as magnetic oxides from badges and dirt) tend to accumulate on the read head. Without regular cleaning, these
contaminantswillshortenthereadheadlifeandincreasetheprobabilityofcardreaderror.Amaintenanceschedule
shouldbedevelopedbaseonthecardreaderenvironment (dirtyorclean)andtheusagefrequency(lighttrafficorheavy
traffic). Extreme case may require daily cleaning.
Headcleaningmaybedonebyusingadisposable,pre-saturatedmagneticheadcleaningcard.Thesecardsarereadily
obtainable from a number of sources (e.g. Clean Team Co., www.cleanteam.com, 800-888-8830; KIC Products,
www.kicproducts.com,207-514-7030;SystemID,www.systemid.com,888-648-4452).
Thereaderexteriorsurface is coveredwithhigh strength polymerandpolyestermembrane. Itmaybecleaned with
a soft cloth and mild detergent if required.
