Patient Specific Hoist Slings
Cromptons Healthcare by MIP patient specific slings are designed to
accompany the patient during their stay in hospital and should be disposed of
when they have no further use for the product, or, the sling becomes badly
soiled or damaged.
The information in this guide is intended to be supplementary to instructions
issued by your local patient handling instructor.
Safe patient handling practices should always be adopted by following your
local hospital / facility patient handling guidelines. These will be available from
your hospital Patient Moving and Handling Advisor.
There are two types of Sling:
Style JL100: designed for use on wishbone style spreader bars with 4 clip
attachment points.
Style JL200: designed for use with standard spreader bars that have loop
attachment points.
Sling selection
Arisk assessment must be carried out to ensure that the correct size and style
of sling has been selected before use. This must be recorded in the patients
handling plan. For loop slings (JL200), you must also assess and record the
correct sling leg configuration and the loop choices.Do not use this sling for
patient bathing or showering.

Specification
Description: Patient specific hoist sling. Materials: non woven spunbond PP
Fully compliant with: BSEN10535:1998
Inspect for damage prior to use
Prior to EACH use, carry out a Pre-use check, in accordance with your local
hospital / facility guidelines and your training. Ref: HSE Getting to Grips with
Hoisting People. (HSE, HSIS3)
Inspect the sling for any damage that may affect its lifting capacity. These
checks should extend to the hoist as well as this sling. If any doubt exists as to
the fitness for use,the sling should be removed from service for examination by
a competent person. Defects and damage that are likely to affect the sling
integrity, affecting its safe use will include: tears, holes or chafe damage to the
sling body, damage to stitching, chemical attack, damage to the clips (clip
slings JL100), damage to the loops (loop slings JL200) or water damage.
The Cromptons Healthcare by MIP Patient Specific Hoist Sling is not designed to
be washed. If the sling has been washed, the “do not wash label” (see label 1)
will dissolve and be replaced with “do not use destroy” label (see label 2).
Recording patient name
When the sling is first issued to the patient you MUST record the patient’s name
and date of issue on the label attached to the side of the sling with a permanent
marker.
Label 1: Label 2:
Hoist sling capacity
All Cromptons Healthcare by MIP patient specific slings are designed and
tested to have asafe working load of 230kg.Always ensure that the patients
weight is less than the slings Safe Working Load, (SWL).
SWL:230kg
Attaching your sling
When attaching your sling to the spreader bar always take care to check that
the webbing straps are not twisted and that the loops, or, clips are attached
securely.Check that the sling body is not creased or rucked underneath the
patient. The sling should be centrally positioned.
Before Hoisting
Do not attempt to hoist the patient until you are satisfied the four attachment
points are securely attached to the spreader bar. Take the hoist up so that
the straps are in tension and check again before lifting commences.

Instructions for Selecting the Correct Size *Refer to figure 1*
•Place the sling over the patients back, extending from their head to the
base of the spine.
•The base of the sling (B) should be level with the base of the spine
(coccyx), and the top of the sling (A) should be level with the top of the
patient’s head.
•Once this measurement has been taken you then need to consider the
distribution of the patient’s weight and their general build. For instance,
you may need to go ‘up a size’ if the patient is larger than average,
around their hips and thighs or ‘down a size’ if the patient is particularly
slim on the hips and thighs.
•If you are not sure, you must ask a competent person to carry out this
assessment.

Sling Sizes
Cromptons Healthcare by MIP patient specific hoist slings are colour coded
for size identification.
The correct sling size should be selected after careful patient assessment.
Figure 1:
Below is a table to assist you when measuring for our slings. This is ONLY A
GUIDE, as patients vary considerably in their height and build.
Person Measurements Sling Measurements
Page 6 Page 7
In Lying *Refer to figure 3*
•Assess the patient to decide how many people you need to perform
the task. Ensure you have the correct size (see measuring guide)
•With the patient lying on their side, drape the sling over them with the
label away from the patient
•Line up the base of the sling with the base of the patient’s spine
(coccyx), ensuring the sling is positioned centrally.
•With one person holding the sling in place, the 2nd person can fold and
tuck the excess fabric of the sling between the patient and the bed (or
floor)
•Roll the patient back onto their back and ease the sling fabric through.
You may need to roll them to the other side.
•Feed each leg piece under each leg and check the fabric is smooth. If
the patient is in bed, consider profiling the bed slightly to bring them
into a semi-sitting position
•Loop Slings only –Thread one loop through the other and cross
(unless an alternative configuration is risk assessed)
•Attach the sling to the spreader bar (For Loop slings only –using the
appropriate loops as per your assessment)
Instructions for Fitting the Sling
In Sitting *Refer to figure 2*
•Assess the patient to decide how many people you need to perform
the task. Ensure you have the correct size (see page 5 “instructions
for selecting the right size” guide)
•Ensure the sling is positioned with the label away from the patient
•Ask the patient to lean forwards or assist them to lean forwards
•Place the sling, so the base of the sling is at the base of their spine
(Coccyx) (See B on Figure 1). Ask them to lean back.
•Bring the leg pieces forwards, ensuring the sling is tucked around and
slightly under the patient’s hips. Leaning them from side to side may
help. Check the sling is positioned evenly and centrally (a slide sheet
glove would help with this)
•Raising one leg at a time, feed the leg pieces under the patient’s thigh
and up between their legs. Check the fabric is smooth.
•Loop Slings only –Thread one loop through the other and cross
(unless an alternative configuration is risk assessed)
•Attach the sling to the spreader bar (For Loop slings only –using the
appropriate loops as per your assessment)
