Patient Specific Hoist Slings
Cromptons Healthcare by MIP patient specific slings are designed to
accompany the patient during their stay in hospital and should be disposed of
when they have no further use for the product, or, the sling becomes badly
soiled or damaged.
The information in this guide is intended to be supplementary to instructions
issued by your local patient handling instructor.
Safe patient handling practices should always be adopted by following your
local hospital / facility patient handling guidelines. These will be available from
your hospital Patient Moving and Handling Advisor.
There are two types of Sling:
Style JL100: designed for use on wishbone style spreader bars with 4 clip
attachment points.
Style JL200: designed for use with standard spreader bars that have loop
attachment points.
Sling selection
Arisk assessment must be carried out to ensure that the correct size and style
of sling has been selected before use.This must be recorded in the patients
handling plan.For loop slings (JL200), you must also assess and record the
correct sling leg configuration and the loop choices.Do not use this sling for
patient bathing or showering.

Inspect for damage prior to use
Prior to EACH use, carry out a Pre-use check, in accordance with your local
hospital / facility guidelines and your training. Ref: HSE Getting to Grips with
Hoisting People. (HSE, HSIS3)
Inspect the sling for any damage that may affect its lifting capacity. These
checks should extend to the hoist as well as this sling. If any doubt exists as to
the fitness for use,the sling should be removed from service for examination by
a competent person. Defects and damage that are likely to affect the sling
integrity, affecting its safe use will include: tears, holes or chafe damage to the
sling body, damage to stitching, chemical attack, damage to the clips (clip
slings JL100), damage to the loops (loop slings JL200) or water damage.
The Cromptons Healthcare by MIP Patient Specific Hoist Sling is not designed to
be washed. If the sling has been washed, the “do not wash label” (see label 1)
will dissolve and be replaced with “do not use destroy” label (see label 2).
Recording patient name
When the sling is first issued to the patient you MUST record the patient’s name
and date of issue on the label attached to the side of the sling with a permanent
marker.
