WALKING:
1. Stand straight, do not hunch over.
2. Move the walker forward. Be sure to place all 4 legs on the
ground at one time.
3. Don’t rock from the back legs of the walker to the front.
4. Step FIRST with your WEAK leg.
5. Your STRONG leg goes LAST.
(You will want to keep it close enough to your body so that it’s
not a strain to reach it. You also don’t want to try to “catch up”
to where you have pushed it. Instead, start with shorter steps to
make sure you are stable.)
GOING FROM SITTING TO STANDING:
1. Place the walker in front of you with the open side facing you.
2. Make sure all 4 tips or wheels of your walker are touching the
ground.
3. Lean slightly forward and use your arms to help you stand
up. DO NOT pull on or tilt the walker to help you stand up.
Use the chair armrests or handrails if they are available. Ask
for help if you need it.
4. Grab the handles of the walker.
5. You may need to take a step forward to stand up straight.
6. Before starting to walk, stand until you feel steady and are
ready to move forward.
GOING FROM STANDING TO SITTING:
1. Back up to your chair, bed, or toilet until the seat touches the
back of your legs.
2. Make sure all 4 tips or wheels of your walker are touching the
ground.
3. Reach back with one hand and grab the armrest, bed, or
toilet behind you. If you had surgery on both legs, reach back
with one hand, then the other hand.
4. Lean forward and move your weaker leg forward (the leg you
had surgery on).
5. Slowly sit down and then slide back into position.
TO GO UP/DOWN STAIRS:
Walkers are not recommended for use on stairs. If a walker is the
only device you can use, follow the special instructions given to
you by your physical therapist.

1. Get the walker as close to the curb as
possible.
2. Place the walker up on the curb with all 4 legs down at on the
ground.
3. Step up with the STRONG leg FIRST.
4. The WEAK leg comes up LAST
TO GO DOWN CURBS/PAVEMENTS:

2. Place the walker down to the lower level.
3. Step DOWN with your WEAK leg.
