3.0 General informaon:
A stator is a xed element of an alternator that
consists of a magnecally conducve core with circular
mounted coil windings. By rotang the stator, the
rotor generates alternang current. The frequency
of generated alternang current equals the rotor
frequency, mulplied by the number of poles (usually
6).
Descripon of an alternator stator winding
1Winding terminals, phases: А, В, С;
2Stator winding
3Magnecally conducve core
Secon 3 – Alternator Stator Test
A three-phase stator winding consists of three
separate windings that are coiled in a certain order
on the magnec core. The phases in the windings are
displaced by one third (120 degrees) of a period of 360
degrees.
Motoplat ®
Page 7

Phase windings can be connected in a ‘delta’ or ‘star’ diagram. The windings are placed into a frame of steel
slots (stator core) to conduct magnec current from the rotor to the stator windings directly and to reduce
area dispersion of the magnec eld. The magnec eld is created in the coils and stator core.
Several types of stator windings are presented below:
Windings with a delta connecon Windings with a star connecon
Windings with a star connecon and center point Windings with a star and delta connecon with
jumpers in the alternator diode bridge

Page 8

3.1 Common failures:
Inter-turn fault (single-phase short circuit):
A. Alternator overload – When the alternator current exceeds the limit, the stator windings can be
overheated and this can cause damage to the winding insulaon.
B. Short circuit due to mechanical damage of the stator.
C. Manufacturing defect, mostly due to incorrect applying of the windings.
D. Incorrect use and storage of an alternator may cause moisture ingress into the unit, which may
lead to inter-turn fault as well.
Inter-phase fault (short circuit between phases):
Inter-phase faults may be caused by the same reasons as inter-turn faults.
Open fault of one or several windings:
Mechanical damage and/or corrosion caused by moisture, may be the reason for breakage of the
windings.
Phase to magnec core fault:
Phase to magnec core faults may be caused by the same reasons as inter-turn faults.

3.2 Scan:
Start the tester by pressing the power buon and
select ‘STATOR’
Connect the test leads with the alligator clips to the
phases of the stator. It doesn’t maer which phase
is connected to which connecon port, as the tester
detects the connected windings automacally.
Press on ‘Scan’ at the right side of the screen.
The tester starts to detect the number of connected
windings.
In the example on the right, the connecon ports 1,
4 and 5 were used.
In case the stator has 6 outputs (star or delta
connecons, commutang to the alternator diode
bridge), connect 6 cables and press Scan. The tester
detects the number of connected windings which
will be displayed on the screen as the example on
the right:
When the phases are too close to each other, the
tester will show the following nocaon: “Too
many connecons”.
This means the phases are not connected the right
way or that the windings contains breakage.
(Please always check if the test leads are connected
the right way (1 test lead per phase) and if the
alligator clips don’t touch each other).

Page 10

3.3 Test:
Aer the connecons are detected, you can start the
stator test.
Place the test pen againt the stator core.
Press on ‘Test’ at the right side of the screen.
Measured values
Pins Detected connecons
Q. units Winding inductance (displayed in nominal units)
Di., units Dierence in percentage between the measured values of winding inductance. The stator is
considered to be faultless if the dierence between the measured values do not exceed 10
percent (%)
Isol., Kohm Insulaon resistance. The value is indicated in kilo ohm. The nocaon ‘norm’ appears on
the display when the winding is faultless. The nocaon ‘short’ appears on the display in
case of a short circuit.
Passed (Example)
Faultless stator winding. 1% dierence between
the phases which corresponds to the acceptable
limits (10%).
Press on ‘Test’ at the right side of the screen.
Motoplat ®
Page 11

When tesng a stator with a ‘star’ connecon, 4 test
cables must be connected: 3 to the phases at the
outside of the stator and 1 to the center point.
The connecons will be displayed as on the example
on the right.
To scan the values between the phases, you simply
remove the connecon cable from the center point.
Rejected (Example)
In the example on the right, the connecons
between phases 2-5 and 5-6 are lost.
Rejected (Example)
The dierence between measured values of
windings exceeds 10%.
Rejected (Example)
The nocaon ‘short’ appears on the display and
the tester makes a repeang sound.
There is a 1% dierence between the phases which
corresponds to the acceptable limit of 10%. This
means the winding insulaon of phases 5-6 is
broken and causes short circuited.

Secon 4 – Alternator Recer Test
4.0 General informaon:
A recer block on three parallel half-bridges with
six semiconductor diodes, converts three-phase
alternang current of the stator into direct current at
the output of the alternator.
A common diagram of recer on three parallel half-
bridges are shown on the right
Because of increasing electrical consumpon in
modern cars, alternators are opmized for high
current up to 350A. The phase voltage on a delta
stator in open state on the diode is about 0.7-1.0 V,
which causes a large amount of heat. For cooling the
recer bridge, heat sinks are used.
As much as any other car parts, alternators are
exposed to contaminaon, overheang and
overcooling. Alternator diodes are water-proof and
protected from all substances.
1. alternator diodes
2. posive heat sink
3. negave heat sink
Recers can be divided into 2 types:
I) diodes pressed (somemes soldered) into recer heat sink plates;
II) diodes soldered on heat sinks with ribbed surface.
To avoid a short circuit of aluminum heat sinks, plates are fully or parally covered with a layer of insulang
material.
Stator winding terminals are welded, soldered or xed with screw connecons to specialized mounng
faces of the alternator recer.
4.1 Common failures:
The most common failures of the recer are:
• Short circuit of one or several diodes
• Open circuit of one or several diodes, caused by mechanical damage or prolonged exposure to
corrosion
• Short circuit of the posive and negave heat sinks, caused by foreign objects or contaminaon.

Page 13

4.2 Test
The VC-014DS tests the 2 way conducon of recers, connected through measuring cables. The tests are
conducted by current pulsaons.
Increased resistance (semiconductor degeneracy) or non-conducng diode(s) are indicated as open circuit
on the display. If possible, the tester restores the recer connecons В+, В- and connecon terminals of
the stator windings upon nishing the measurement. Somemes a recer has a large amount of short-
circuited diodes and diodes with open circuit, which will not idenfy its connecons.
In such cases, it is recommended to use addional informaon on the display (amount of short circuited
diodes and diodes with open circuit).
Display descripon:
Connecon: recer connecon display
Free: disconnected measuring cables
Open Circuit: recer diodes with open circuit
Short Circuit: recer diodes with short circuit
Test: buon to start the test
Back: buon to stop the test and
return to the main menu.
Start the tester by pressing the power buon and
select ‘DIODE BRIDGE’
Motoplat ®
Page 14

Connect all recer diodes to the tester through the required number of cables. There is no need to
observe polarity and order: the tester detects connecons automacally.
Disconnected cables must be isolated from each other.
Press the test buon.
The VC-014DS tests the connected recer and shows the results on the screen.
Passed (Example)
The test results of a well-funconing three-armed
recer are shown on the right.
The measuring cables 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 are connected,
cable 4 is disconnected.
Passed (Example)
The test results of a well-funconing three-armed
recer are shown on the right.
In comparison with the previous gure, the order of
connected measuring cables were changed.
