HD DVR
Quick Start Guide

Thanks for buying a Moxi HD DVR®. We know you want to see it in action, so
let’s get started.
What you need for setup:
• Moxi HD DVR
• Multi-Stream CableCARD™*
• Digital Cable Subscription
• Standard coaxial cable
• Computer connected to the Internet
• Wired Ethernet connection to Moxi HD DVR
*About CableCARDs
The key to unleashing your Moxi HD DVR experience is to power it up with
a Digital CableCARD. A CableCARD will give you access to more high-
definition (HD) and premium content.
Order a Multi-Stream CableCARD from your cable service provider.
Make sure that your CableCARD has an M marked on it for Multi-Stream,
which will allow you to record two programs at once. Your cable service
provider may schedule an appointment for installation, or they may allow
you to pick up a Multi-Stream CableCARD directly from their customer
service centers and do the installation yourself.
Note: You can set up your Moxi HD DVR even if you haven’t received your
CableCARD yet.
To receive digital cable TV programming services, you need a subscription from
your cable provider. HD programming may require an additional subscription.
Please see moxi.com if your cable provider still provides analog services. Your
Moxi HD DVR is not designed to work with satellite or over the air signals.
For additional information on using your Moxi HD DVR, other Moxi products, and
for additional support, see our website: http://www.moxi.com.

5 Connect to Your TV
Connect your Moxi HD DVR to your TV with the HDMI cable.
HDMI provides the best video and audio quality in one cable. If your TV doesn’t
have an HDMI input, use the component or composite cable. HDMI or compo-
nent connections are required for HD video support.
Tip: You can connect additional devices such as stereo receivers to your Moxi
HD DVR. See the user guide at moxi.com for further information.

7 Activate Your Moxi HD DVR
Note: During this part of the setup process, you will need to have access to a
computer with an Internet connection.
Turn on your TV. If a software update is available, the Moxi HD DVR will already
be downloading that update and will restart when finished. This may take up to
45 minutes; do not unplug your Moxi HD DVR during this time. When complete
or if an update is not required, you will see the following registration screen con-
taining your Moxi ID.
Write down this ID, go to your computer, and direct an Internet browser to moxi.
com. Select “Activate a Moxi”. When prompted for your Moxi ID number, type in
the 12-digit Moxi ID that was displayed on your TV screen.

Next, confirm your account and cable provider information. Your Moxi HD DVR
will download guide data and graphics.
At this point, if you do not have a CableCARD inserted, you will be asked to start
a channel scan. Please go to the user guide at moxi.com for details on channel
scanning. When the scan is complete or if your CableCARD is already in place,
you will be asked to restart your Moxi HD DVR.
9 CableCARD Setup
If you have a CableCARD inserted into the Moxi HD DVR unit, you should see
the screen pictured below. You will need the CableCARD ID, Host ID, and Data
number to initialize your CableCARD. This screen might differ slightly depending
on your cable provider.
Once you have completed the registration process, you’ll have a personal
Web account. You’ll see an 8-digit registration key on your computer screen.
This registration key will also be sent to the email address you provided during
registration.
8 Complete Your Registration
Go back to your Moxi HD DVR, and use your remote to enter the 8-digit
registration key when prompted.

Activate Your CableCARD with Your Provider
Next, call your cable service provider to initialize your CableCARD. Make sure you
tell your cable provider the following details:
1. I would like to “activate” and “Initialize or pair” my Multi-Stream CableCARD
with my Moxi HD DVR
2. Your cable provider will ask you for the CableCARD ID, Host ID, and Data ID
numbers and will walk you through the pairing process.
3. In some instances, the cable provider might ask you for the Unit Address
and the Serial Number of the CableCARD – these too as displayed on your
CableCARD screen.
4. Once the CableCARD has been paired, stay on the line with your cable rep
to make sure encrypted TV channels like HBO HD display properly. If you do
not see any TV channels, make sure that your rep has validated your Cable-
CARD.
5. To check for validation:
a. Press the Moxi button
b. Navigate horizontally to Settings
c. Scroll vertically to CableCARD, and press OK
d. Select “Conditional Access” or look for a card that lists the information
“val=” or “val:”.
e. Relay the information listed after “val=” or “val:” to your rep, and confirm
that the card has been validated.

If you have connected your TV to your Moxi HD DVR with an HDMI cable, you can
skip this step.
We want to make sure that the Moxi Menu displays correctly on your TV screen
and is optimized for high-definition viewing.
10 Set Your TV resolution
1. Press the Moxi button and navigate horizontally to Settings
2. Scroll vertically to TV Setup
3. Choose the highest resolution you think your TV supports. Check your TV
manual for details.
4. After making your resolution selection, wait to make sure you see video. If
you do not see anything appear on your screen, wait 30 seconds and the
Moxi HD DVR will revert to the previous settings for you to try again.
5. For best performance, unselect any other resolutions other than the highest
one your TV supports.
At this point, if you are able to see program information for channels that you
cannot watch, your cable service provider may use a technology called Switch
Digital Video. See the troubleshooting guide at moxi.com for instructions on
receiving these channels.
