MAGNUM 10 Watt X-ray Source Characteristics
TheMAGNUM®x-raytubeissmall,lightweight,andcanbepackagedintocustomenclosures.TheMAGNUMx-raytube
packageincludesanx-raytubeandahighvoltagepowersupplythatoperatesatupto50kVand200μA.TheMAGNUMtubeis
idealforbattery-poweredapplications.Thetubeanodeisgroundedallowingplacementclosetothesample.

WhenaMAGNUMtubeisreceived,itshouldbeunpackedandinspectedassoonaspossible.AstandardMAGNUMtubeis
packagedinabrassshield.Thisshieldisconnectedtoahighvoltagepowersupplyviatwowhitehighvoltagewiresandone
greengroundwire(Figure1).Inspectthehighvoltagepowersupplyandthetubeshieldassemblyforanydamagethatmayhave
occurredduringshipping.Ifatubehasbeendamaged,pleasecontactMoxekimmediately.Theserialnumberislocatedonthe
highvoltagepowersupply.Pleasedonottouchtheberylliumwindow.Donopullonorbendthehighvoltagewires.
Careshouldbetakenwhenhandlingthetubeandthehighvoltagepowersupply.Liftthepowersupplyandthetubewithboth
handstoavoiddamagingthehighvoltagewiresorpottingmaterial.Preventthetubefromstrikinganysurface.Caremustbetaken
tonotdamagetheberylliumwindoworhighvoltagewires.

TheshieldedMAGNUMtubeassemblymaybemountedwiththeexitcollimatorfacinganydirection.Careshouldbetakennot
tostrainthehighvoltagewires.Minimumhighvoltagewirebendradiusis1.25inches.Thehighvoltagepowersupplyhasthree
threadedholesonbothsidesofthemetalcase.Theseholesmaybeusedformounting(seeDrawing1).
Cooling
TheMAGNUMtubedoesnotrequireforcedconvectionorliquidcooling.Thetubeshouldbeoperatedinanenvironmentthat
allowsfreeconvectionorconductiontosecondaryparts.Pleaserefertopage2ofthismanualforambientandstoragetemperature
specications.Themaximumambienttemperature,asmeasuredatthesurfaceofthepowersupplyenclosure,is+10°C.The
maximumoperatinganodeshieldtemperatureis100degreesCelsius(seeFigure2).

Outputpowerbelow4W:Moxtekrecommendsusingthe2-pinoptionalsecondarycable(ASM00364)whileoperatingthe50kV
MagnumTube(Figure4).ThepinassignmentisshowninDrawing1andinTable1.
Outputpowerabove4W:2-pinsecondarycableisrequiredfortubeoutputandstability(Figure4).
Attachthe2pinsecondarypowercabletothebacksideofthehighvoltagepowersupplycase.RefertoFigure3andTable1for
pinidenticationandelectricalspecications.Attachthe2barewireleadstoa6to10VDCpowersupplyortoaMoxtekFTC-200
x-raytubecontroller.
Thehighvoltagepowersupplyalsohasa10pinIDCconnector.Thisconnectorisusedtopower,control,andmonitorthex-ray
tube(Figure6).
A10leadribboncableisavailablefromMoxtek(Figure3).Thisribboncablehasa10pinIDCconnectorononesidethat
connectstothehighvoltagepowersupplyandaDB9connectorontheotherendthatconnectstotheMoxtekFTC-200controller.
Thepinassignmentforthe10pinIDCisshowninDrawing1andthepin-outfortheDB9connectorisshowninTable1.
Safety
Toassuresafetubeoperation,a5voltTTLsignalissenttothepowersupplytoenablex-raygeneration.Moxtekrecommendsthe
useofasafetyinterlockswitchwhenoperatingtheMAGNUMx-raytube.Connectthehighvoltageenablepin(seeTable1)tothe
customersuppliedsafetyinterlockswitch.

ThehighvoltagepowersupplyusesDCvoltagesandsignalstooperatethetube.TooperatethetubewithoutusingaMoxtekFTC-
200controller,refertoDrawing1forthe10pinhighvoltagepowersupplyconnectorpinouts.
MAGNUMtubeanodesaregroundedtoametalshield(Figure1).Theshieldisgroundedtothepowersupplyviaagreenwire.
Makesurethatthegreengroundwireissecurelyconnectedfromthetubeshieldtothegroundingterminalonthehighvoltage
powersupplycase.DONOTdisconnectthegreengroundwirefromthetubeshieldorthehighvoltagepowersupply.Itwill
damagethetubeand/orpowersupplyifthegroundcableislooseordamaged;donotoperatethetubeuntilthegroundcableis
securedorreplaced.Isolateallgroundsforthex-raytube.
Whenoperatingthe50kVMAGNUMx-raytube,adheretothemaximumsetting:50kV,0.20mAmax.Failuretoadheretothese
limitsmaycausedamagethex-raytubeand/orhighvoltagepowersupply.Failuretoadheretothisparameterwillforfeitthetube
warranty.
WhenoperatingtheMAGNUMx-raytube,wait2secondsafterthetubehasbeenpoweredoffbeforepoweringthetubeonagain.
Failuretowait2secondsmaydamagethelament.Failuretoadheretothisparameterwillforfeitthetubewarranty.
CAUTION: VerifythatthetubeandthehighvoltagepowersupplyareproperlygroundedbeforepoweringontheFTC-200tube
controller.AlsoverifythattheFTC-200controllerisproperlygroundedtothepoweroutlet.IfyouarenotusingtheFTC-200
Controllerandusingacustomcontroller,makesurethetubeandthehighvoltagepowersupplyareproperlygrounded.
CAUTION: MAGNUMX-raytubescontainBeryllium.InhalingBerylliumdustmaycauselungdisease–refertotheMSDS.
Undernormaluse,Berylliumdustisnotgenerated.IftheBerylliumwindowisbroken,averysmallamountofdustmightbe
generated.IfthisoccursfollowtheinstructionsontheMSDSforcleanup.
WARNING: MAGNUMX-raytubesmaybecomeveryhotduringoperation.
WARNING: MAGNUMX-raytubesproducex-rayradiation.MAGNUMtubesareshieldedwithametalshieldandhigh-Z
pottingmaterials.Extrashieldingmayberequireddependingontheapplication.ONLYOPERATEX-RAYTUBESIN
PROPERLYSHIELDEDENCLOSURES.Itistheresponsibilityoftheoperatortoensurethatallapplicablesafetyprecautionsare
takenandobserved.
WARNING: MAGNUMX-raytubesoperateathighvoltages.Refertotubehandlinginstructionsonpage3.Precautionsshould
betakentoprotecttheoperatorwhileapplyinghighvoltagestoavoidseriousinjuryordeath.
TheFTC-200controllerisdesignedtopower,monitor,andcontroltheMAGNUMx-raytube.Thiscontrollercontainsallofthe
necessaryelectronicstooperatethehighvoltagepowersupply.TheFTC-200controllerprovidesinputpowertothehighvoltage
powersupply.TheFTC-200controlsthehighvoltageandemissioncurrentsettingsonthex-raytube.TheFTC-200controller
includesbuilt-inmetersforconvenientmonitoringanddisplayofthehighvoltageandemissioncurrent.RefertotheFTC-200
OperationManualforoperatinginstructions.
