Initial Inspection:
TheMonoblockX-RaySourceissmall,lightweight,and
canbepackagedintocustomenclosures.TheMonoblock
X-RaySourcepackageincludesanx-raytubeandahigh
voltagepowersupplythatoperatesatupto50kVand
200µA.ThelowpowerconsumptionMonoblockX-Ray
Sourceisidealforbattery-poweredapplications.Thetube
anodeisgroundedallowingplacementclosetothesample.
WhenaMonoblockX-RaySourceisreceived,itshould
beunpackedandinspectedassoonaspossible.Astandard
MonoblockX-RaySourceconsistsofahighvoltagepower
supplyandanx-raytubeenclosedinabrassshield(Figure
1).Inspectthehighvoltagepowersupplyandthetube
shieldassemblyforanydamagethatmayhaveoccurred
duringshipping.Ifatubehasbeendamaged,please
contactMoxtekimmediately.Theserialnumberislocated
onthestickeronthehighvoltagepowersupply.

TheMonoblockX-RaySourceassemblymaybemounted
withtheexitcollimatorfacinganydirection.Thehigh
voltagepowersupplyhasvethreadedholesM3x3mmon
thebottomside(nostickers)ofthemetalcase.Theseholes
maybeusedformounting.
(Cooling)
TheMonoblockX-RaySourcedoesnotrequireforced
convectionorliquidcooling.Thetubeshouldbeoperated
inanenvironmentthatallowsfreeairconvectionor
conductiontosecondaryparts.Pleaserefertopage2
ofthismanualforoperatingandstoragetemperature
specications.Thespeciedtemperatureismeasuredatthe
surfaceofthealuminumcancontainingthehighvoltage
powersupplyunit.
Themaximumrecommendedoperatinganodeshield
temperatureis100degreesCelsius(seeFigure2).
Caremustbetakennottotouchordamagetheberyllium
windowattheendofthetubeshield(Figure2).

connectorononesidethatconnectstothehighvoltage
powersupplyandaDB9connectorontheotherendthat
connectstotheMoxtekFTC-200controller(Table3).

Operating the Monoblock X-Ray Source without a
Moxtek FTC-200 controller:
ThehighvoltagepowersupplyusesDCvoltagesand
signalstooperatethetube.Tooperatethetubewithout
usingaMoxtekFTC-200controller,refertoTable1and
Table2forthe10pinhighvoltagepowersupplyconnector
pinouts.

Operating Conditions:
Monoblock’sanodesaregroundedtoametalshield(Figure1).
Whenoperatingthe50kVMonoblockX-RaySource,adhereto
themaximumsettingbelow:
• 50 kV, 0.20 mA max, power limited to 4 Watts
Failuretoadheretotheselimitsmaycausedamagethex-ray
tubeand/orhighvoltagepowersupply.Failuretoadheretothis
parameterwillforfeitthetubewarranty.
WhenoperatingMonoblockX-RaySource,wait 2 seconds
after the tube has been powered off before powering the
tube on again.Failuretowait2secondsmaydamagethe
lament.Failuretoadheretothisparameterwillforfeitthe
tubewarranty.
Operation Precautions and Warnings:
CAUTION: Verifythatthetubeandthehighvoltagepower
supplyareproperlygroundedbeforepoweringontheFTC-
200tubecontroller.AlsoverifythattheFTC-200controller
isproperlygroundedtothepoweroutlet.Ifyouarenotusing
theFTC-200Controllerandusingacustomcontroller,make
surethetubeandthehighvoltagepowersupplyareproperly
grounded.
WARNING: Monoblocksourcesoperateathighvoltages
upto50kV.Refertothetubehandlinginstructionsonpage
4.Precautionsshouldbetakentoprotecttheoperatorwhile
applyinghighvoltagestoavoidseriousinjuryordeath.
WARNING:MonoblockX-RaySourcemaybecomevery
hotduringoperation.Temperaturesshouldnotexceed50
degreesCelsiusonthepowersupplybox.
WARNING: MonoblockX-RaySourceproducesx-ray
radiation.Monoblock’stubesareshieldedwithametal
shield(brass)andhigh-Zpottingmaterials.Extrashielding
mayberequireddependingontheapplication.ONLY

Operating the Monoblock X-Ray Source with a
Moxtek FTC-200 Controller:
TheFTC-200controllerisdesignedtopower,monitor,
andcontroltheMonoblockX-RaySource.Thiscontroller
containsallofthenecessaryelectronicstooperatethehigh
voltagepowersupply.TheFTC-200controllerprovides
inputpowertothehighvoltagepowersupply.TheFTC-
200controlsthehighvoltageandemissioncurrentsettings
onthex-raytube.TheFTC-200controllerincludesbuilt-
inmetersforconvenientmonitoringanddisplayofthe
highvoltageandemissioncurrent.RefertotheFTC-200
OperationManualforoperatinginstructions.
