 WARNING
SECTION 1 GENERAL GUIDELINES contains important information for the safe
operation and use of this product.
Contraindications
ALWAYS consult the patient’s physician before using the icroAIR 3500S system. Certain
medical conditions preclude use of a low air loss mattress replacement system. e.g.,
unstable spinal cord, traction, etc.
Installation
The icroAIR 3500S UST be installed on medical bed frames with side rails. The side
rails UST be in the raised position whenever a patient is on the bed.
Controls on the footboard may be obstructed by the power unit on a few bed frames. It
may be necessary to relocate the power unit.
Check that air hoses and power cord are clear of moving bed components before placing
a patient on the bed. Operate all bed frame motorized functions through their full range
of motion to verify there is no pulling, interference, or pinching.
The therapy pad is essential for skin moisture control. DO NOT place a patient directly
on the mattress without a therapy pad. The therapy pad protects the mattress
components from contamination.
The icroAIR 3500S has enough power to produce excess mattress firmness for small
patients. The range switch should be set to the appropriate range for the patient. Refer to
Range Switch on page 12.
DO NOT strap the mattress to the bed frame at the head and foot ends. Secure ALL
mattress straps. Secure the straps to the bed deck at the head and foot ends and to the
frame at the center of the bed. Otherwise damage to the mattress will occur when the head
and foot ends are raised.
Servicing
The air filter element and mattress assembly are the only user-serviceable parts. DO NOT
open the power unit. Refer all repair questions to Invacare Technical Service Department.
The system UST be maintained, inspected and tested according to the schedule in the
maintenance section of this manual to deliver consistent performance. If your system
requires factory service, contact Customer Service for a Return Authorization number
(RA). Package systems in the original shipping box. Clean all system components before
shipment.
UNSANITARY SYSTE S WILL BE RETURNED WITHOUT SERVICING.

Entrapment May Occur
 WARNING
Proper patient assessment and monitoring, and proper maintenance and use of
equipment is required to reduce the risk of entrapment. Variations in bed rail
dimensions, and mattress thickness, size or density could increase the risk of
entrapment. Visit the FDA website at http://www.fda.gov to learn about the risks of
entrapment. Review “A Guide to Bed Safety”, published by the Hospital Bed Safety
Workgroup, located at www.invacare.com. Use the link located under each bed rail
product entry to access this bed safety guide.
Refer to the owner’s manuals for beds and rails for additional product and safety
information.
After any adjustments, repair or service and before use, make sure all attaching
hardware is tightened securely. Assist rails with dimensions different from the
original equipment supplied or specified by the bed manufacturer may not be
interchangeable and may result in entrapment or other injury.
Mattress MUST fit bed frame and assist rails snugly to reduce the risk of
entrapment.
Fire Hazard
 DANGER
Smoking
DO NOT SMOKE while using this device. This system uses room air for circulation
through the mattress. A cigarette can burn a hole in the bed surface and cause
damage to the mattress. Also, patient clothing, bed sheets, etc. may be combustible
and cause a fire. Failure to observe this warning can result in severe fire, property
damage and cause physical injury or death.
Smoking by visitors in the room will contaminate the system. Therefore, visitor
smoking is NOT permitted.
Anesthesia Equipment
There is an explosion risk if used with flammable anesthetics.
Oxygen
There is a possible fire hazard when used with oxygen administering equipment
other than nasal mask or half bed tent type. The oxygen tent should NOT extend
below mattress support level.

Before performing any maintenance to the power unit, disconnect the power cord from
the wall outlet.
DO NOT insert items into any openings of the control unit. Doing so may cause fire or
electric shock by shorting the internal components
The control unit UST be kept away from all heat sources and radiators during
operation.
Connect the equipment to properly grounded three prong wall outlet using 10-14 ft
hospital grade power cord provided with the product.
Grounding reliability depends on properly grounded receptacle (3-prong).

Auto Firm
 WARNING
DO NOT leave a patient unattended while in AUTO FIRM mode. Otherwise, the
patient might roll off the mattress and injury may occur.
Press the Auto Firm button to inflate the mattress to maximum pressure for patient
transfer or nursing procedures.
NOTE: An indicator lights to notify AUTO FI M mode is on.
NOTE: A timer will cancel AUTO FI M in 30 minutes.
Therapy
Press the Therapy button to cancel AUTO
FIR mode. The mattress will adjust to the
pressure indicated on the Control knob.

Power Connector
Connect the power cord to the power connector.
NOTE: Use only the 10-14 foot hospital grade cord to ensure proper grounding.
Filter Door
Open the filter door to change the air filter. Rotate counterclockwise to remove. The air
filter should be changed every 1500 hours of use.
Mounting Brackets
Two sizes of swing-out brackets are located on each side of the rear panel. Narrow and
wide swing-out brackets fit most bed footboards.
Range Switch
The range switch is located inside of the filter compartment. The range switch controls the
patient weight range. Set the switch to:
• Low for 0-180 lbs
• High for 150-350 lbs
NOTE: The MicroAI 3500S has enough power to produce excess mattress firmness for small
patients. The ange switch is hidden in the filter compartment to prevent unauthorized power
adjustment.

Bed Set-Up
Preparing the Bed
 WARNING
For patient safety, the bed frame MUST have side rails.
Some homecare beds have adjustable width side rails. Set the side rail width so the
rails touch the mattress. Avoid a gap between the mattress and side rail.
The side rails MUST be in the up position when the patient is lying on the bed.
This mattress is not intended for use on a residential bed.
1. Remove the original bed mattress and place it in storage.
Installing the Power Unit
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGU E 3.1.
NOTE: The standard power unit installation is on the upper edge of the footboard.
1. Select the appropriate width swing-out mounting brackets
NOTE: Two sizes are available on the rear panel.
2. Place the power unit on the footboard.
3. Run the power cord under the center of the bed.

Installing the Pre-assembled Mattress
CAUTION
DO NOT strap the mattress to the bed
frame at the head and foot ends. Secure
ALL mattress straps. Secure the straps
to the bed deck at the head and foot
ends and to the frame at the center of
the bed. Otherwise damage to the
mattress will occur when the head and
foot ends are raised.
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGU E 3.2.
1. Lower the bed frame side rails.
2. Roll out the mattress onto the bed deck.
3. Strap the mattress to the bed deck at the
following locations:
• Head End - Head End Bed Deck
• Foot End - Foot End Bed Deck
• Center - Center of the Bed Frame

4. Thread the strap ends through the buckles provided and take up excess slack.
5. Check that side rails move freely after inflation.
NOTE: To release strap tension, lift the tab on the buckle.
Connecting the Air Hoses
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGU E 3.3.
1. Connect the color coded hoses (not
shown) to the power unit by
performing the following steps:
A. Push in the collar on the coupler on
the left side of the power unit.
B. Insert the hose fitting (not shown).
C. Release the collar to lock the fitting.
NOTE: If the collar does not snap back,
push the hose fitting in until it does.

Installing the CPR Plug
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGU E 3.4.
1. Insert the rubber plug into the hose on the head air sack.
NOTE: Moisten the rubber plug if necessary to ease installation.
2. Extend the CPR flag outside the mattress assembly to hang down beside the bed
frame.

Installing the Therapy Pad
 WARNING
A patient should not be placed directly on the mattress without a therapy pad. A
loose (non fitted) cotton sheet between the patient and therapy pad is optional.
A tightly fitted cotton sheet may increase skin friction and shear.
1. Starting at the foot end of the bed, lay the therapy pad (quilted side down) on top of
the mattress.
2. Connect the therapy pad snaps to the corresponding snaps on the straps located on
the mattress (near the bed frame).
Installing the Power Cord
1. Plug the power cord into a wall outlet.
NOTE: Verify that air hoses and power cord are clear of moving bed components.
2. Operate all bed motorized functions through their full range.
NOTE: Check for pulling, interference or pinching, and correct any problems.

System Operation
 WARNING
After placing the patient, make certain no objects will fall under the patient, such as
feeding tubes, IV’s etc.
Use a regular pillow to help support and stabilize the patient’s head. Make sure the
patient’s limbs assume natural positions without pinching. Use pillows, foam or
sheepskin appliances as required to cushion potential body to body contact areas.
When elevating the head of the bed, elevate the knee section first. The therapy pad
is slippery to minimize skin friction. Head elevation without knee elevation may
cause the patient to slide toward the foot of the bed.
DO NOT leave a patient unattended while in AUTO FIRM mode. Otherwise, the
patient might roll off the mattress and injury may occur.
The head of the bed should be maintained at the lowest degree of elevation consis
tent with medical conditions (AHCPR Pub. 92 0047, P.24). The lowest skin pressure
is maintained with 0° to 20° head raise angle. Angles above 30° place more body
weight over the seat area, reducing pressure relief. Instruct the care giver to avoid
head angles over 30° for extended periods, unless medically necessary (US Depart
ment of Health and Human Services publication No. 92 0048).
1. Press the Power button to start the power unit.
NOTE: The mattress will start to fill slowly.
2. Press the Auto Firm button to inflate the mattress to maximum pressure for patient
transfer.
NOTE: A timer will cancel AUTO FI M in 30 minutes.
3. Check patient weight.
4. Do one of the following:
• If patient weight is between 0-180 lbs, set the Range switch (inside the filter door)
to LOW range.
• If patient weight is between 150 - 350 lbs, set the Range switch to HIGH range (the
blower runs faster when you switch the toggle to HIGH).
5. Adjust Pressure Control Knob fully clockwise.
6. Push the Therapy button to turn Off AUTO FIR .
7. Position the patient onto the mattress. Refer to Positioning the Patient on the attress
on page 18.
NOTE: The foot air sack section will inflate slowly.
NOTE: If the mattress does not inflate, refer to the Troubleshooting on page 24.

Positioning the Patient on the Mattress
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGU E 3.5.
1. Place the patient on the mattress.
2. Ensure the patient’s feet are towards the end of the mattress with the power unit.
3. Center the patient on the mattress from side-to-side and head-to-foot.
NOTE: Use a regular pillow under the head for comfort and to control head position. Special
positioning may be required with contracted patients to provide comfortable positions.
4. Gradually turn the control knob (counterclockwise) every three minutes until
approximately 3-inches of the patients body is immersed into the mattress top surface.
NOTE: The goal is to achieve flotation of the
body for minimum skin contact pressure.
5. After stabilization, reach in under the
patients body until the hand is directly
below the spinal area.
6. Place the heel of the hand on the mat
assembly (FIGURE 3.4 on page 16)
between the first and second air sacks
and raise the thumb. If the patient is too
high, the thumb will not touch the
patient’s body. If the patient is too low,
you will not be able to raise the thumb.

7. Adjust the control knob until the proper flotation level is achieved.
NOTE: Wait at least three minutes between each adjustment for the pressure to stabilize.
8. Raise the bed frame knee section and head section to 30°.
NOTE: Observe if the patient bottoms out against the frame. If so, the control knob pressure is
adjusted too low. aise the pressure and retest the patient flotation level with the bed frame lowered.
Patient Transfer from/to a Gurney
 WARNING
ALWAYS engage the wheel locks of the bed before transferring the patient from
the bed to the gurney.
1. Press the Auto Firm button to achieve maximum mattress pressure.
NOTE: In two to three minutes, the mattress will become very firm so the patient can be slid onto
the gurney.
2. Engage the wheel locks of the bed. Refer to the owner’s manual provided with the bed.
3. Engage the wheel locks of the gurney. Refer to the owner’s manual provided with the
gurney.
4. Raise or lower the bed to match the gurney height.

5. When the mattress has reached maximum firmness, perform one of the following:
• Bed to Gurney Transfer - Slide the patient onto the gurney.
• Gurney to Bed Transfer - Slide the patient onto the bed.
6. Press Therapy to return mattress pressure to the original setting.
Patient Transfer from/to a Wheelchair
 WARNING
Always engage the wheel locks of the bed before transferring the patient fromt he
bed to the wheelchair.
Transfer From a Wheelchair
1. Engage the wheel locks of the bed. Refer to the owner’s manual provided with the bed.
2. Engage the wheel locks of the wheelchair, if applicable. Refer to the owner’s manual
provided with the wheelchair.
3. Turn Off the unit to deflate the mattress.
4. Raise or lower the bed to match the wheelchair height. Refer to the owner’s manual
provided with the bed.
5. Transfer the patient from the wheelchair following the instructions given in the
individual wheelchair’s owners manual.
6. Lay the patient on their back and raise the bed side rails to the safety position.
7. Press the Power button to turn the system On.
8. Press the Auto Firm button and wait until the mattress is fully inflated.
9. Once the mattress is inflated, press the Therapy button to return the patient to
flotation.
Transfer To a Wheelchair
1. Engage the wheel locks of the bed. Refer to the owner’s manual provided with the bed.
2. Engage the wheel locks of the wheelchair, if applicable. Refer to the owner’s manual
provided with the wheelchair.
3. Turn Off the unit to deflate the mattress.
4. Lower the bed side rails to prepare for patient transfer.
5. Raise or lower the bed to match the wheelchair height. Refer to the owner’s manual
provided with the bed.
6. Transfer the patient to the wheelchair following the instructions given in the
individual wheelchair’s owners manual.

Setting Up the MicroAI Systems
The icroAIR 3500S systems are made patient-ready at the dealership before delivery to
the installation site. The mattress is pre-assembled and the power unit has been tested and
serviced.
Ask the caregiver or nursing staff what isolation precautions are required when
performing adjustments with the patient on the bed. Typically, if protective clothing is
required, the institution will provide it to aid healthcare workers.

Disinfectant chemicals should be registered, hospital-grade, and have effectiveness
claims for destroying or inactivating harmful microorganisms. Use only in the
manufacturer's recommended dilution. NEVER mix different chemicals together in the
same container.
Phenolic disinfectants are supplied in highly concentrated form. They are tuberculocidal
when used at the recommended dilution. They provide a high level of disinfection. They
are also effective in decontaminating blood spills.
Quaternary cleaner disinfectants are supplied in highly concentrated form. They are
usually capable of cleaning, deodorizing and disinfecting in a single operation. They are
especially suitable for cleaning equipment at the patient site where low level disinfecting
or odor control is indicated.
Laundry disinfectant presoaks can be either phenol or quaternary chemicals. These
products are suitable for adding to water as a presoak.
For lighter soil, the cover can be cleaned by topical wipe down with a PH balanced soap
and water solution normally used to wash the patient. Rinse with water.
