MSA DragonFly SA User manual

NOTICE
These instructions must remain
attached to the PASS. The end user
ONLY is authorized to remove them
from the device. – NFPA 1982 (1998
Edition), par. 3.2.3
This manual, including the warnings
and cautions inside, must be care-
fully read and followed by all per-
sons who use or maintain this prod-
uct, including those who have any
responsibility involving its selection
or application. This DragonFly SA
Personal Alert Safety System (PASS)
from MSA will perform as designed
only if used and maintained accord-
ing to the instructions. Otherwise, it
could fail to perform as designed
and persons who rely on this prod-
uct could sustain serious personal
injury or death.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The DragonFly SA from MSA is a
Personal Alert Safety System (PASS).
The unit is designed to be worn on a
waist belt.
In the sensor mode the PASS con-
stantly monitors the user’s movements
using a specially designed
microchip/sensor circuit. Green flash-
ing LEDs on the PASS confirm that it
is activated.
Should the wearer remain still for 18
seconds the DragonFly SA unit sounds
a pre-alarm tone for about 12 seconds.
To prevent a false alarm, the wearer
only has to move his body. If after the
pre-alarm period the wearer is unable
to move, two large diameter piezo res-
onators emit a piercing 98 decibel
alarm chosen to be easily located by
rescuers. The alarm sounds two
upward tones followed by a buzz. This
sequence is then repeated continually
until the PASS is reset manually.
The unit also features an override,
and can be used to summon atten-
tion manually. Due to the unit's low
power consumption the alarm will
sound at full volume for approximate-
ly 5 hours with a fresh battery.
The DragonFly SA PASS will monitor
temperature conditions (if the Heat
Sensor option is included).
Neither the Low Battery Warning nor
the Temperature Alarm will sound in
Pre- Alarm or Full Alarm.
Battery Installation
1. Remove the battery cover (four
screws on front panel).
2. Insert battery. Make sure negative
(-) or larger terminal is closest to
the alarm button.
3. Insert base of battery first, com-
pressing foam pad in battery
compartment. Snap terminals into
place.
Use only the recommended battery
type as defined inside battery com-
partment.
4. Verify that the battery cover gas-
ket is held in place in the battery
cover.
5. Replace cover.
6. Evenly tighten cover screws by
moving in an X pattern around the
cover. Torque the four screws to 6
in. lb. Do not overtighten the
screws. Do NOT use a thread
sealant on the screws.
Replace the battery when the low
battery warning sounds. Use only
recommended battery type as
defined inside battery compartment.
Change the battery in non-haz-
ardous area only.
Failure to follow this warning can
result in serious personal injury or
death.
Your DragonFly SA PASS unit is now
ready for use.
Unit Installation
The DragonFly SA PASS is equipped
with a tethered key. These keys are
designed to be tied to an anchor
point (like a jump seat or locker) so
that when the DragonFly SA unit is
removed from its storage location it
activates automatically. In OFF posi-
tion, the key is located on the unit as
shown. To activate, remove key.
The DragonFly SA is designed to be
worn on the waist belt. Recommended
orientation is upright with the PASS
set as low as possible on the belt, on
the right hip, as shown. This location
permits the key tether to be free to
attach and release.
Open the wire clip. slide the clip down
behind the belt and close the clip as
shown.
The DragonFly SA unit is shipped
with the belt clip dimples facing
towards the case for most standard 2
inch wide waist belts. For thicker
belts, remove back clip by opening
clip completely and pulling insertion
prongs free of the unit. Reverse clip
so that the dimples now face away
from the case.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Test PASS for proper operation
before each use. Replace battery
when warning sounds. Use only rec-
ommended battery type as defined
inside battery compartment.
Most performance properties of the
DragonFly cannot be tested by the
user in the field. Use this PASS in
accordance with NFPA 1500, ANSI
A88.2 and Z88.5.
Change battery in non-hazardous
area only.
Failure to follow the above can result
in serious personal injury or death.
1. Clip the DragonFly SA unit to a
belt in a suitable position.
2. To activate, remove key.
3. To reset pre-alarm, shake device.
4. To sound full alarm, press alarm
button once OR remain motionless
for 30 seconds if unit is activated.
5. To reset full alarm, press either
side button twice.
6. To deactivate, first insert key, then
press reset (switch on right side)
twice.
7. When the battery is near the end
of its life the “Low Battery
Warning” will sound. This is a
short “beep” every five seconds.
Replace with the correct battery.
THERMAL ALARM
The DragonFly SA PASS will monitor
temperature conditions (If the Heat
Sensor option is included). The
DragonFly SA is equipped with a ther-
mistor that triggers an alarm at preset
time/temperature limits. The alarm
sounds the same as the signal heard
when unit is turned on. Once the ther-
mal alarm is activated it will be repeat-
ed every few seconds. The following
curve approximates the performance
of the Dragonfly SA thermal alarm. The
time/temperature limits are based on
the Project Fires Temperature curve.
The thermal alarm will sound if the
time/temperature exceeds the curve.
The alarm will self-cancel after a peri-
od of time depending on the severity
of the condition. This may occur even
though the temperature is above the
thermal curve.
Although this thermal alarm pro-
vides an indication that the
time/temperature curve is exceed-
ed, the curve may not represent the
threshold to injury due to variations
in individuals and the protective
clothing worn. Use this alarm as a
reference only to increasing
time/temperature. It should not be
a substitute for standard operating
procedures regarding escape from
time/temperature extremes. Failure
to follow this precaution can result
in serious personal injury or death.
WARRANTY
The unit carries a full twelve month
warranty against faulty workmanship
and/or component failure. In the event
of a malfunction within the warranty
period please return the unit to your
supplier. The unit will be repaired or
replaced free of charge. For repairs
which occur outside the warranty
period, return the unit to your suppli-
er. The necessary repairs will be car-
ried out and a charge billed.
MAINTENANCE & STORAGE
• There are no serviceable parts
inside the DragonFly SA unit.
• Removing the back cover will
invalidate the warranty & intrinsic
safety certification.
• Clean with a damp cloth using
soap and water.
• Units contaminated by chemical
or radioactive materials must be
decontaminated or disposed of
according to all applicable regula-
tory standards.
• The DragonFly SA unit should be
fully tested before each use.
• In the event of any malfunction
return the DragonFly SA unit to
supplier.
• Store PASS units in a dry ventilat-
ed area at ambient temperatures,
consistent with the battery manu-
facturer’s recommendations.
• The key break away is 2-5
pounds. Replace the key if less
force is required.
• Do not use cleaning solvents.
• Do not paint the case.
• Identification marks may only be
etched onto the top flat or either
dome of the DragonFly. Etching
depth must not exceed 1/64”
(0.4mm).
