It is essenal that any entrapment risks are balanced against the ancipated benets to the user.
Check your suitability
Our Bed Levers are designed to be used by a person of normal adult size not exceeding 100kg max user weight. They are not
to be used by children. Bed Levers are designed to be used to assist a person in and out of bed. They should not be used as a
restraint to prevent a person falling out of bed. They are not intended to restrain people whose condion disposes them to
errac, repeve or violent movement. People who want to be safe in bed should understand the risks associated with using
Bed Levers, take steps to ensure that they are installed and used correctly, and be aware that certain individuals should not
use Bed Levers. Injury or even death can occur when the appropriate precauons are not adhered to.
Bed Levers may not be for everyone, nor every situaon and can present a hazard to certain individuals, parcularly to people
with physical limitaons or altered mental states, such as demena or delirium. It is important that an individual risk
assessment is performed for each user on a case by case basis. It is essenal that any risks are balanced against the
ancipated benets to the user. There maybe a risk of suocaon if the person’s face is wedged against a so surface
(maress or Bed Lever) restricng breathing resulng in asphyxiaon aer entrapment of the head or neck. These situaons
might be prevented if the correct Bed Lever for the individual is chosen, installed correctly, and adequate risk assessments are
taken. Aer the Bed Lever is ed, the user’s situaon can change, so appropriate ongoing risk management needs to be
carried out. These notes are a guide only. For specic advice on your parcular needs, please seek a qualied Occupaonal
Therapist.
Some of the hazard concerns are:
• Entrapment between the upright rails of the grab handle (only the 3/11S and 3/1AS prevent this type of head entrap-
ment) Note that the 3/11 and the 3/1A do not have this safety feature and so may not be suitable in some situaons.
• If the grab handle pulls out from the maress an entrapment gap can occur (ng of the cord and cleat prevents this).
• There should be a gap of at least 250mm between grab handle and any xed object like the bed ends.

Gap is greater than 250mm
Gap is less than 120mm which resists head
entrapment of the average size adult.

The bed grab handle should be placed hard against the maress and held
in place by the cord and cleat. This prevents a gap opening where
entrapment could occur.

Installaon instrucons
Choose the correct Bed Lever; ideally based on a clinical assessment. Posion the Bed Lever so that when placed under the
maress with the handle ed against the side of the maress, the client (from a lying posion) should be able to reach the
handle without stretching. There must be a gap of at least 250mm from the headboard to the Bed Lever, and the maress
should rest against the grab handle to reduce the risk of head/limb entrapment. Fit a cord and cleat xing to prevent an
entrapment gap opening between the grab handle and the maress. This prevents the Bed Lever pull out from the bed.
Please ensure these instrucons are fully read and followed. Failure to do so may result in injury to the user. Retain these
instrucons in a safe place for future reference. The Bed Lever provides a stable support to help users move themselves to a
sing posion and assist them geng in and out of bed. This Bed Lever is suitable for divan, inner-sprung and most slaed
domesc beds, and for all bed sizes from single to king-size. Not suitable for proling beds.
Safety Precauons:
• Regularly check the Bed Lever to idenfy areas of possible entrapment.
• Posion the Bed Lever away from head or footboards of a bed.
• Make sure that there is no gap between the Bed Lever and the side of the maress. A gap could allow the user to
become wedged between the Bed Lever and the maress.
• Addional safety measures should be taken for users that are a high risk. Such users include those who are not
conscious (including those individuals under medicaon), users who have size or weight condions that may change
the gap between the bed rail and the maress (as the maress depresses), and users who are generally restless while
awake or asleep.
