Safety Warnings
lUse this product only with UL- and CUL-listed computers.
lNever install phone wiring during a lightning storm.
lNever install a phone jack in a wet location unless the jack is
specifically designed for wet locations.
lNever touch uninsulated phone wires or terminals unless the phone
line has been disconnected at the network interface.
lUse caution when installing or modifying phone lines.
lAvoid using a phone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical
storm; there is a risk of electrical shock from lightning.
lDo not use a phone in the vicinity of a gas leak.
lTo reduce the risk of fire, use only 26 AWG or larger telephone line
cord.
Installation Process
Step 1: Mount the Feet
The modem comes with a strip of self-adhesive plastic feet, which you can
optionally mount on the modem. To install the feet, simply peel them from
their paper strip and press them into the recesses on the bottom of the
modem.
Step 2: Change the Internal Jumpers
This step is required only if:
lYou have an MT5634ZBAV and intend to add a monophonic
external speaker (no changes are needed for a stereo speaker)
lYou intend to use your modem on a leased line
f either case applies, see the complete User Guide for instructions on
opening the modem, changing the speaker jumper, and changing the
dial-up/leased-line jumpers.
Step 3: Connect the Modem to Your System
Turn off your computer. Place the modem in a convenient location, and
then connect it to your computers serial port, the phone line, AC power,

Connect the Modem to the Telephone
Line
Plug one end of the phone cable into the modem’s LINE jack and the
other end into a phone wall jack. The phone cable is included with
your modem.

not plug the phone into the L NE jack or the line cable into the
PHONE jack.
(Optional) Connect the Modem to the Phone
For voice-only calls, plug a phone into the modems PHONE jack.
Connect the Modem to the AC Power Outlet
Plug the DC power transformer into an AC power outlet or power

Power-On Test
Test the modem by turning it on (an on-off switch is located on
the side panel). When you apply power, the modem performs a
diagnostic self-test. The 56 indicator lights, and if a terminal
program is running, the TR indicator also lights. f this does not
happen, check that the power switch is on, the power supply is
solidly connected, and the AC outlet is live. f these measures do
not work, see Trou leshooting, in the complete User Guide.

Then add the following:
Connect the Microphone
For voice mail or speakerphone applications, plug an unamplified
microphone into the M C jack on the side of the modem. The
microphone should have a stereo 1/8-inch mini plug. Do not use a
monophonic microphone.
Connect the Speaker(s)
For speakerphone or voice mail applications, use a 1/8-inch-plug
male-to-male stereo patch cord to connect the SPKR jack on the
side of the modem to the L NE N jack on your sound card. f your
sound card does not have a L NE N jack, use its M C jack. The
stereo male-to-male patch cord can be purchased at a local PC
retail store.
f you do not have a sound card, you can plug an amplified
speaker directly into the SPKR jack.

Troubleshooting in the complete User Guide.

models appears.
3. nsert the system CD-ROM, and then click Have Disk.

and Play configuration in the Windows modem driver. Communication
programs designed for DOS and other operating systems, however,
must be manually configured to work with your modem. See the
complete User Guide for configuration procedures.
