For your safetyIntroduction
Congratulations on your purchase of the
advanced and compact SXC-1280 USB
Modem, designed to operate with the latest
digital mobile communication technology.
Please carefully read these guidelines
before you proceed. These safety warranty
and cautions are very important for proper
usage of SXC-1280.
• USB Modem must not be used in an
aircraft at all times.
• Do not use your Modem near petrol
stations, fuel depots, chemical plants or
blasting operations.
• For your safety, use the ONLY specic
PC.
• Do not handle the modem with wet hands
while it is being operated. It may cause
an electric shock or damage your modem
seriously.
• Keep the modem in a safe place out of
children’s reach. It contains small parts
which may cause a choking hazard, if it’s
detached.
• Do not use the modem in areas with
special regulations against electronic
usage. (i.e. The hospitals where sensitive
medical equipment can be affected by
Modem usage)
• Only use ORIGINAL accessories to avoid
damage to your modem.
• All radio transmitters carry risks of interfer-
ence with electronics in close proximity.
Minor interference may affect TVs, radios,
PCs, etc.
The User Guide contains important
information on the proper use and
correct operation of SXC-1280 USB
Modem. Please read carefully to
ensure optimal performance and also to
prevent any misuse of the product, as
any improper usage outside of this User
Guide may result in warranty void.

1. Disconnect the DATA call before shut-
ting down the Laptop / Desktop PC or
plugging out the modem.

Data call is in progress, for a safe

▌Prepare to install.
At rst time before using your modem
device, you should connect your USB
modem to the PC. When you plug it to a
USB port, your system will detect it to a
virtual drive and a memory disk. If you don’t
see that, please check LED color of your
modem device. If it was green light, press
the button to switch memory device with
red light.
The mass storage driver is installed
automatically. You can start installation by
“Auto Run” or clicking “Setup.exe” in the
USB Memory folder.
▌Installing Speed Access Manager
Speed Access Manager refers to the dialer
client of USB modem, which is expressed
SAM.
1. Plug the USB modem to a USB port.
2. When the rst screen appears, click the
“Installation” icon to start the installation
wizard.
3. Clicking “User Manual” or “Quick Guide
& Trouble Shooting” icon in the rst
screen will prompt you to “Open” or
“Save” the Manual. Click “Open” to see
the Manual or click “SAVE” to save the
Manual into your PC.

4. When the InstallShield wizard window
appear as follow, click the “Next” to
continue for the next step.
5. Default installation directory is “C:\
Program Files\TATA\SAM” which can be
changed by clicking on “Browse” button.
The program is ready to be installed, click
the “Install” button to begin installation.
6. Program installation is in progress.
*Note
• Since Driver is to be installed
automatically, please do not unplug the
USB modem from the PC while driver
installation.
• Installation time for completion can be
different up to user’s PC spec.
7. After Speed Access Manager 1.0 instal-
lation is complete, you will see a screen
regarding Speed+ installation. If you wish
to install Speed+, click “Install”. If you do
not wish to install Speed+, click “Finish” to
complete the installation progress.
*Note: Speed+ helps you to accelerate for
the internet speed.
The following screen captures demonstrate
Speed+ installation procedure.
8. Starting to install Speed+ 4.3.0 Read
about Speed+ and then click “Next” to
proceed to the next step.
* “SAM” refers to Dialer Client of the
USB modem, which is Speed Access
Manager.

9. Read the license agreement and then
click “Yes” to proceed to the next step.
If you do not agree, click “No” to abort
installation.
10. Network connection will become
unavailable while the installation is in
progress. Before starting installation,
save all open documents and close all
applications. Click “Next” to start
installation.
11. Choose a directory for installation les.
Click “Next” to proceed to the next step.
12. Starting to install the application. When
installation les are completely copied,
the installation screen automatically
moves to the next step.
13. The application has been installed. The
system should be restarted to apply the
installed program. Click “Finish” to nish
the installation procedure.
14. The Speed Access Manager 1.0 program
installation is complete. Click “Finish”.

Uninstalling Speed Access Manager
If you want to uninstall the Speed Access
Manager program, Select Start > All Pro-
gram > TATA > SAM > Uninstall as shown.
▌Running Speed Access Manager
Plug the USB modem to a USB port., and
execute “SAM.exe” to start.
There are 2 ways to launch the installed
Speed Access Manager. Either by pressing
the shortcut icon in the desktop, or by
selecting Start > All Program > TATA >SAM
as shown.
After initialization, the main window of
application will be displayed in the screen
as shown.
The main window has 8 Menu icons with
specic functions.
If the modem is not properly plugged in, or
your PC system didn’t detect a USB modem
device, you will
meet a popup message can’t nd a modem,
and you can see a disable window as
follows:

▌Menu
• File
You can import or export your address
data to another storage le using this
menu. CSV le format is same as “.xls” le
(Microsoft Excel). And also you can open it
more simply by “notepad”.
If you want to exit, you may click “Exit” to
close this program. If then, a pop up window
is appearing and asking you as follows.
There is an option
that is “Turn off
MODEM device”.
The default value
of this option is
checked, but you can change it to be
unchecked.
When you close your Speed Access
Manager dialer with checking this option,
your modem device will be turned off at the
same time.
• View
You can select the items on the main menu
directly or select them by the view menu.
• Help
When you press F1 key or select Quick
guide as follows, You see this Quick guide.
▌Icon
• Tray icon
When you set this program to minimize, it’s
going to tray icon.
And if you want to extend a menu from
tray icon, just click mouse right button on
the tray.
• UIM icon
If your modem device detects a RUIM
card correctly, you will see the following
UIM icon:

• Validation of the UIM card.
1. If a UIM card is not inserted correctly in
your modem, you will see the following
pop-up message:
2. Otherwise, your Speed Access Manager
dialer will be opened by normally.
• Pin Lock
1. If your UIM card was locked, it requires a
pin code to enter.

*Note: The maximum pin code is 4 digits.
*Note: If you have failed to release your
locked status in 15 times, your UIM card will
be blocked.
2. If your lock code is valid, you can use your
modem device normally.
3. If the PIN code is invalid, you can’t use
your modem device and also your pin-
lock count will be decreased. The count
indicates how many chances remain to
unblock from the block status.
4. If your lock count is 0 and you’ve reached
the limit, your UIM card will be blocked
and you can’t use your UIM card anymore.
You will see the following message:
5. When your UIM card is blocked, you can
make it to unblock using a PUK code. But
if you don’t know your PUK code, contact
your service center.
• PUK code
1. It is a pre-dened code and its maximum
length is 8 digits.
This is for manufacturing process to
unblock a RUIM card, and you can nd it
from its user manual.
2. You can enter PUK code as follows.
You can change your pin code with a valid
PUK code.
If the PUK code is valid, the blocked status
will be released and a message will be
poped up. Otherwise, you will see a failure
message box as follows:
There is an unblock count same as the
PIN. The count indicates number of
chances to re-enter the PUK code when
you click “OK” button. You have 10 times
chance to unblock your card. But if you
failed to release your UIM card in your
chance, it will be blocked and you can’t
use it anymore.
• Web to Network
1. To access to the network, click “Web”.
2. There is a default prole to connect to the
TATA networks. If you want to add another
prole, click the “Add” button. You can
also use the context menu on the list by
your mouse right button.

When it has completed its initialization,
a UIM icon will be shown.

3. If you want to connect to the network, you
may select one of the proles on the list
and just click “Connect”.
You can also edit or delete your prole on
the list using the buttons at the bottom of
the window.
4. When you press “Connect”, a progress
window pops up showing its connection
status.
You can cancel connection by clicking the
“Cancel” button on the progress bar.
5. When it is connected, you can check your
connected time and received packet.
The packet speed is shown on the status
bar.
Your modem device will be blinked by
green light.
You can’t use a voice call function while
it is connected, but it is possible to use
SMS.

To disconnect your connection, click
“Disconnect” button.
▌Voice
Call placing/receiving buttons
1. Enter the destination phone number by
using the keypad or keyboard. Also you
can select a phone number on the call list.
After then click “Send” to make a call.
To nish your conversation, click the “End”
button.

2. You can also make a call from another
window such as “SMS”, “Address” or
“Call Logs” tab. They have a “Call” button
for making calls.
3. During a conversation, you can control
your device volume by using the volume
bar. It will be appeared after call con-
necting.
4. The “Mute” is a toggle button. It converts
its function between “Mute” and “Unmute”
each type you click it.
5. To save a phone number, you may click
“Add”.
6. The “Log” button shows a window with
the log list.
7. You can search a number in your
address book using the “Search” button.
8. It also supports the “Plus dial”. You can
edit digits with a ‘+’ code on your dial us-
ing the keyboard.
• Call placing/receiving display
1. When there’s an incoming call, it plays a
ring sound and displays the caller number
on the right side of the window screen.
2. If you click the “Send” button or click the
notify window, you can answer the call or
hang up by clicking the “End” button.
3. During conversation status, your call time
will be displayed and you can send DTMF
keys.
4. When you missed an incoming call, it is
registered as a missed call and the caller
number is recorded with its call time.
There is a count icon for missed calls on
the status bar. To delete a missed call or
clear the count, you may click “End” or
“Clear” button. You can set to idle status
by clicking the missed call log list or by
double clicking the icon.
• Call utility
1. Your modem supports conference call and
call waiting functions but it rsts needs to
be registered to a service center.
2. Conference call (3-way call) enables you
to converse with 2 more people.
Once you register, you can make a confer-
ence call. Dial the rst number and click
[Incoming call]

“Send”, then you may dial to the next
destination number and click “Send”
button to make a call.
3. Call waiting function allows you to receive
another incoming call during a
conversation. You can receive the second
call using the “Send” button. Then the rst
party will be placed on hold.
You can switch rst party and second
party using the “Send” button.
▌SMS
• Send
1. Write a message in the edit box, and add
a destination number to the call number
list using the “Add” button. You can
edit your message until it is being 160
characters.
You can use a “Search”, “Log”, or “Add”
button to add a number to the list and also
delete using the “Del” button.
2. There are 3 priority options. They are
“Normal”, “Urgent”, and “Emergency”
options.
3. There are some utilities for message
editing. They are “Templates”, “Emotion”,
and “Special”.
4. You may send the message by clicking
the “Send” button. 5. You can send a message with a delayed
time by clicking the “Deferred” button.
You have 4 options
to send it with some
delayed time. When
all items are done,
you may click the
“OK” button. And then your message will
be sent directly and saved in the “Draft”
tab. Of course it will be reserved in our
network side, and will be sent in time as
you wish.

• Inbox
1. When a message is incoming, you
can see a small pop up window like as
notication, and a tray icon blinks; it also
plays an alert sound depending on your
selection in “Incoming SMS Alert”. The
received
message is automatically saved in Inbox.
To set the “Incoming SMS Alert” option,
press the “SMS” tab in the “Settings”
menu, and set “Incoming SMS Alert”
option. Refer to “Settings” for details.

If you have unread messages, your new
message count will increase on the Status
bar (see the bottom of the window).
3. You may sort your messages by Number,
Name, Date and Content under the
“Inbox” tab. The message icon indicates
whether your messages were read or not,
and it has a storage icon like as PC, UIM
or Modem.
4. If you select a message, the content of the
message is displayed under the list.
• Sent
1. Under the “Sent” tab, the sent messages
are sorted by Number, Name, Date and
Content. You can identify the location of
the messages (PC, UIM or Modem) with
the icons.
2. Click the “forward” button to send the
message to new recipients. Click the
“Delete” button to delete the selected
message.
• Draft
1. Under the “Draft” tab, there are failed or
unsent messages.
2. If the message has failed to send, the
“Failed” comment will be shown in the
Status column. You can send it again
using “Resend” button.

• Spam
1. Under the “Spam” tab, the ltered
messages containing specic numbers
or words are listed. The messages are
sorted by Date, Number, and Content.
2. You can dene numbers or words as
you wish to lter a spam message at the
“SMS” tab under the “Settings” menu.
You can select “Use” or “Not Use” in
“Spam Message Settings”, and add/edit/
delete the Spam numbers with the “Add”,
“Edit” or “Delete” button in the Number
list. You can also add/edit/delete the Spam
words with the “Add”, “Edit” or “Delete”
button in the Word list.
• Voice mail box
1. The voice mail messages from BTS are
displayed in the “Voice” menu. You can
sort the messages by Number, Data and
Content.
▌Address
• Search
1. To search a person in your address, select
an item in the eld (Name, All no, Mobile,
Group, Address, Home, Ofce, FAX,
Email, or Comments) on the list, and enter
a name or number. After click “Search”
then the entries, containing the name or
number, are listed.
2. You can search entries in a specic stor-
age (PC, Modem, UIM, or All) by clicking
the correct button under the search eld.

1. You can make a new group; the maximum
contact per group is 20.
2. You may right click on the mouse as
shown on the left diagram. When you click
it, a small menu will pop up. There are
4-options; Add-Edit-Delete-SMS
3. If you want to move or copy your items
between each group, you can use drag-
and-drop or use a small menu such as
shown in the right gure.
• List
1. You can “add”, “edit” or “delete” the
contact details in your list box.
▌Call Logs
• Call Log
1. You can see All Calls, Dialed Numbers,
Received Calls and Missed Calls. The
number of entries stored in the list is
displayed on the top right of the window.
2. “All Calls” show Dialed Numbers,
Received Calls and Missed Calls which
are identied by the icons. The entries can
be sorted by Date, Time and Number.
3. “Dialed Numbers” shows the numbers
you have dialed.
4. “Received Calls” shows the numbers
from which you have received calls.
5. “Missed Calls” shows the numbers you
have missed calls.
• Internet Log

1. If you select “Internet” tab under the Call
Log, you can check your accessed logs.
2. The Internet Log list displays information
on Internet usages such as dates, time,
Tx and Rx.
3. On the top of the Internet Log list are the
total log count available and the current
log count.
4. Prev: You can move to the previous
month.
5. Next: You can move to the next month.
6. Export: You can save the internet log list
of the current month as CSV les.
*Note: This Internet Log feature provided
with this utility gives only approximate
usage of Data and Time and are strictly
indicative, which would vary due to various
extraneous factors. These usage details are
not used for your billing purpose and the
billing is done as per the switch report.
▌Settings
• General Settings
1. You have 3 options for “Windows Set-
tings”. “Auto termination when windows
go to power saving mode” enables this
dialer to exit automatically when your PC
is switching to a power save mode. If you
select “Auto execution when windows
start” then dialer starts automatically
when your OS is booting. And “Execute
Speed Access Manager on Background”
makes it going to a try and running on a
background when you click its exit icon

to enable, then your voice will be encoded
before transmitted.
3. You can change the background color
of Speed Access Manager with “Color
Theme”.
• Call Settings
1. According to your choice, an alert process
of the incoming SMS is changing. There
are 3 options like as “System Tray Icon”,
“Auto Popup”, and “Sound Prompt”
under “Incoming Call Alert”. And also you
can choice a “Ring Tone” listening it. If
you want to set another tone like as wave
then click the ring tone list and select
"Browse”. You can select any one as you

“Auto” and “Manual”. When you select its
“Manual” then you should edit the number
for international but you might on’t care if
you select “Auto”.
• SMS Settings
1. According to your choice, an alert process
of the incoming SMS is changing. There
are 3 options like as “System Tray Icon”,
“Auto Popup”, and “Sound Prompt”
under “Incoming SMS”. You can check or
uncheck these options as you wish.
2. You can make it to enable and dene the
voice center callback number via “Default
Voice Center Number”. But if possible,
don’t change your default option.
3. You can classify some messages to
spam. If you wish to enable it, then select
“Enable” otherwise select “Disable” under
the “Spam Message Settings”. When
you select its “Enable”, you can edit the
phone numbers and some words as you
wish to lter.
• UIM Settings
1. If you wish to change the lock status from
current, select “PIN Lock” and change its
option. If your choice was differ from old
status then it requests the PIN code of
your UIM card. You can see the example
under the next gure. New string as “En-
ter PIN code” is appearin. You can try to
input your PIN code at 15 times until your
PIN gets a conrmation from your device.
2. If you want to change your PIN code of
your UIM card, select “PIN change” and
then input your current and new PIN code
orderly. That time, if your status is unlock-
ing then you can’t go ahead.Because it
requests its locking status when you are
changing its PIN code.
3. Because it can be locked if you didn’t
input your correct PIN code while on your
chance, you need to be careful when you
input your PIN code.
• Lock Settings

1. If “General Lock” is “On”, it requests a
lock code every time when you start this
application.
2. If “Internet Lock” is “On”, it requests
a lock code when you try to access an
Internet under Web menu.
3. If “Outgoing Call Lock” is “On”, it
requests a lock code each time when
you try to make a call except only an
emergency call.
4. If “International Call Lock” is “On”, it
requests a lock code each time when you
try to make an international call.
5. If “Incoming Call Lock” is “On”, it
requests a lock code each time when you
are getting an incoming call.
6. If “SMS Lock” is “On”, it requests a lock
code each time when you are accessing
the “SMS” menu.
7. “New Lock Code” enables you to change
your lock code. First up, you should
know your current lock code. After input
a current lock code, you can change your
lock code.
• Information
1. “My Phone Number”: This is your phone
number.
2. It displays its version of the application
and the modem device like as “Applica-
tion” and “Modem”
3. “PRL ID” means its PRL ID of the modem.
4. “Memory Information” shows you a
status of its storage space.
▌Internet
▪ If you click “Web”, the Internet browser start
and moves to a specic URL.
▌Email
▪ The Email client or the web mail selected
by the service provider starts.

connection to PC with Fedora Core 6,
Ubuntu 6.06, SUSE 9.1 personal version
and 10.
▌Linux connection for Internet
1. Log in in the root user.
2. Connect the USB modem to PC
3. Run terminal in Linux
4. Type following command.
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
5. wvdialconf will detect the modem, its
maximum baud rate, and a good
initialization string and will generate or
update the wvdial conguration le based
on this information.
6. A conguration le will be created as
below.

7. But the user still need to edit /etc/wvdial.
conf to specify the phone number, login
name, and password of your internet
account in order for wvdial to work.

▌How to connect Internet
1. Open the terminal.
2. Type wvdial and press enter.

1. The message “Modem driver not installed.
Install driver and restart program” is
displayed on the Dialer Client?
►
Dialer Client is not installed properly,
Reinstall Dialer Client.
2. There is no Antenna indicator on the
Speed Access Manager Dialer and “No
service” is displayed and the LED of your
USB Modem is in red?
►
Your UIM card might be a bad one. Please
check your card whether it is valid or not.
► If your UIM card is in normal, then your
device might be a faulty. Please contact
service provider for more information.
3. The message “Modem unplugged. Plug
modem” is displayed on the Dialer Client?
►
USB Modem is not connected to PC. If
connected, separate USB Modem from
PC, and reconnect one minute after. Next,
go to Start > Control Panel > System >
Hardware > Device Manager to check
whether USB Modem is in it. If Modem is
not in the list, remove USB Modem from
PC and reconnect after one minute.
4. The message “Invalid Modem Port,
Reinstall driver” is displayed on the Dialer
Client?
►
The PC recognizes USB Modem as a
different system. Remove USB Modem
from PC, and reconnect after one minute.
Next, go to Start > Setting > Control Panel
> System > Hardware > Device Manager
to check whether USB Modem is in it.
If Modem is not in the list, remove USB
Modem from PC, and reconnect after one
minute. If the Message “Invalid Modem
Port” continues to appear, please re-install
Dialer Client after removing the previous
program.
5. Do not remove an R-UIM Card while USB
Modem is in use.
►
This may harm the PC and Modem.
Please use the “Safely Remove Hard-
ware” command to disconnect the USB
Modem rst or remove the UIM Card after
the PC is shut down.
6. When a “MIN_LOCK” message is
displayed?
►
This message occurred when an invalid
RUIM card has been inserted. Please
ensure that a valid R-UIM card is inserted.
7. When a “PHONE_LOCK” message is
displayed?
►
This message occurred when an invalid
RUIM card has been inserted for more
than ve times. Please contact service
provider to unlock.
8. When a “MIN out of range” message is
displayed?
►
Please enter valid MIN.
9. The message “Connect” appears even
after connecting the Internet.
►
Do not click “Connect” again. It is
necessary to take time to connect to the
Internet using the “Dial-up network”.
10. If you fail to input correct pin number,
please contact service provider.
