Note Before you begin, install and configure your chassis and controller.
This document explains how to install, configure, and test the PXIe-6570. The PXIe-6570 is a
32-channel digital pattern instrument.

Electromagnetic Compatibility Guidelines
This product was tested and complies with the regulatory requirements and limits for
electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) stated in the product specifications. These requirements
and limits provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the product is
operated in the intended operational electromagnetic environment.
This product is intended for use in industrial locations. However, harmful interference may
occur in some installations, when the product is connected to a peripheral device or test object,
or if the product is used in residential or commercial areas. To minimize interference with
radio and television reception and prevent unacceptable performance degradation, install and
use this product in strict accordance with the instructions in the product documentation.
Furthermore, any changes or modifications to the product not expressly approved by National
Instruments could void your authority to operate it under your local regulatory rules.
Caution To ensure the specified EMC performance, operate this product only with
shielded cables and accessories. Do not use unshielded cables or accessories unless
they are installed in a shielded enclosure with properly designed and shielded input/
output ports and connected to the product using a shielded cable. If unshielded
cables or accessories are not properly installed and shielded, the EMC specifications
for the product are no longer guaranteed.
Caution To ensure the specified EMC performance, the length of all I/O cables
must be no longer than 3 m (10 ft).
Caution To ensure the specified EMC performance, you must install PXI EMC
Filler Panels, National Instruments part number 778700-01, in all open chassis slots.
Verifying the System Requirements
To use the NI-Digital Pattern Driver and Digital Pattern Editor, your system must meet certain
requirements.
Refer to the product readme, which is available online at ni.com/manuals or on the
NI-Digital Pattern Driver and Digital Pattern Editor Media (NI part number 785249-03), for
more information about minimum system requirements, recommended system, and supported
application development environments (ADEs).
Unpacking the Kit
Caution To prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging the module,
ground yourself using a grounding strap or by holding a grounded object, such as
your computer chassis.
1. Touch the antistatic package to a metal part of the computer chassis.

2. Remove the module from the package and inspect it for loose components or other signs
of damage.
Caution Never touch the exposed pins of connectors.
Note Do not install a module if it appears damaged in any way.
3. Unpack any other items and documentation from the kit.
Store the module in the antistatic package when the module is not in use.

Note You can download the NI-Digital Pattern Driver and Digital Pattern Editor at

Preparing the Environment
Ensure that the environment in which you are using the PXIe-6570 meets the following
specifications:
Operating Environment
Ambient temperature range 0 °C to 45 °C (Tested in accordance with
IEC 60068-2-1 and IEC 60068-2-2. Meets
MIL-PRF-28800F Class 3 low temperature
limit and MIL-PRF-28800F Class 4 high
temperature limit.)
Relative humidity range 10% to 90%, noncondensing (Tested in
accordance with IEC 60068-2-56.)
Maximum altitude 2,000 m (800 mbar) (at 25 °C ambient
temperature)
Pollution Degree 2
Indoor use only.
Installing the Software
You must be an Administrator to install NI software on your computer.
1. Install an ADE, such as LabVIEW or Microsoft Visual Studio.

2. Insert the software media USB or download the NI-Digital Pattern Driver and Digital
Pattern Editor at ni.com/downloads. The installer should open automatically after
inserting the software media USB.
If the installation window does not appear, navigate to the drive, double-click it, and
double-click autorun.exe.
3. Follow the instructions in the installation prompts.
a) Select .NET Framework 4.0 Languages Support or .NET Framework 4.5
Languages Support in the NI-Digital Pattern Driver installer to install .NET
support for the NI-Digital Pattern Driver software.
Note Windows users may see access and security messages during
installation. Accept the prompts to complete the installation.
4. When the installer completes, select Restart in the dialog box that prompts you to restart,
shut down, or restart later.
Digital Pattern Editor
Use the Digital Pattern Editor to view, create, modify, and debug pin and channel maps,
specifications, levels, timing, pattern, source waveform, and capture waveform files. You can
also use the Digital Pattern Editor to configure the state of the digital pattern instrument.
The Digital Pattern Editor is installed when you install NI-Digital Pattern Driver. For more
information, refer to the Digital Pattern Help.
To access Digital Pattern Editor documentation, in the Start menu, navigate to
NI Digital Pattern Documentation in the National Instruments folder. The primary help file
is digipat.chm, and all other help files in the folder are embedded in digipat.chm.

Associated Drivers
NI-DCPower
The NI-DCPower driver is required to use NI-DCPower modules within the Digital Pattern
Editor. For more information about using NI-DCPower modules within the Digital Pattern
Editor, refer to the Digital Pattern Help. Visit ni.com/downloads to download NI-DCPower.
NI-Sync
The NI-Sync driver is required to support operations using the PXIe-6674T timing and
synchronization module, such as combining comparison results across digital pattern
instruments. For more information about using the PXIe-6674T with digital pattern
instruments, refer to the Digital Pattern Help. Visit ni.com/downloads to download NI-Sync.
Installing the PXIe-6570
Caution To prevent damage to the PXIe-6570 caused by ESD or contamination,
handle the module using the edges or the metal bracket.
1. Ensure the AC power source is connected to the chassis before installing the module.
The AC power cord grounds the chassis and protects it from electrical damage while you
install the module.
2. Power off the chassis.
3. Inspect the slot pins on the chassis backplane for any bends or damage prior to
installation. Do not install a module if the backplane is damaged.
4. Remove the black plastic covers from all the captive screws on the module front panel.
5. Identify the slots you will use in the chassis.
The PXIe-6570 is a two-slot module with two PXI Express backplane connectors. The
module must be installed into two adjacent PXI Express-compatible slots. If you plan to
use the optional PXIe-6674T Timing and Synchronization Module, reserve the PXI
Express System Timing Slot for its placement in the chassis. The following figure shows
the symbols that indicate the slot types.

6. Touch any metal part of the chassis to discharge static electricity.
7. Place the module edges into the module guides at the top and bottom of the chassis. Slide
the module into the slots until it is fully inserted.

8. Secure the module front panel to the chassis using the front-panel mounting screws.
Note Tightening the top and bottom mounting screws increases mechanical
stability and also electrically connects the front panel to the chassis, which can
improve the signal quality and electromagnetic performance.
9. Cover all empty slots using EMC filler panels or fill using slot blockers to maximize
cooling air flow, depending on your application.
10. Power on the chassis.

Connecting Signals
PXIe-6570 Front Panel
The PXIe-6570 front panel has a single 68-pin VHDCI Digital Data and Control (DDC)
connector. The following figure shows the front panel and pinout of the PXIe-6570 digital
pattern instrument.

Note The 32 digital I/O data channels on the digital pattern instrument are split
into banks for PPMU operation efficiency: DIO<0..7>, DIO<8..15>, DIO<16..23>,
DIO<24..31>. PPMU measurements run in parallel when you take measurements on
channels in different banks.
LED Status Indicators
Status indicators on the front panel of the PXIe-6570 provide feedback about instrument
operation.
Use the following table to determine the PXIe-6570 state using the Access LED status
indicator.

Use the following table to determine the PXIe-6570 state using the Active LED status
indicator.

Color Indications
Off Instrument is not waiting for a trigger, not bursting a pattern, and not experiencing
an error. During PPMU operations, the Active LED remains off.
Amber Instrument awaiting Start trigger.
Green Instrument received Start trigger and is bursting a pattern.
Red Instrument error condition.
Possible error conditions:
• Self-test failed on the instrument. This error condition will persist until the
instrument is reset or self-test succeeds.
• Self-calibration or external calibration adjustment failed on the instrument. This
error condition will persist until the instrument is reset or calibration succeeds.
• The instrument has detected an unlocked condition on a PLL that might result
in incorrect data. To clear this error condition, reset the instrument
programmatically or through Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX).
• The instrument has been disabled because it exceeded its overall power limit.
To re-enable the instrument, reset it programmatically or through MAX.
• The instrument has been disabled because it exceeded its overall temperature
limit. To re-enable the instrument, cool the instrument to an acceptable range
and resolve the environmental condition that caused the shutdown. Reset the
instrument programmatically or through MAX, or power cycle the instrument.
Connecting to a Device Under Test
To connect a device under test (DUT) to the PXIe-6570, you can create a custom device
interface board to access the signals of the DUT. For more information, refer to the Interfacing
to the Digital Pattern Instrument or Digital Waveform Instrument using the VHDCI Connector

Note If you plan to use the PXIe-6570 as part of an integrated system, such as a
Semiconductor Test System (STS), refer to the system documentation for guidance
on device interface board design and connection guidelines. For system
documentation, contact your NI sales engineer.
To connect a custom device interface board to the VHDCI Digital Data and Control connector
on the PXIe-6570, use a mating connector for the VHDCI cable from NI.
PXIe-6570 Accessories
Caution To ensure the specified EMC performance, operate this product only with

Configuring the PXIe-6570 in MAX
Use Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) to configure your NI hardware. MAX
informs other programs about which NI hardware products are in the system and how they are
configured. MAX is automatically installed with NI-Digital Pattern Driver.
1. Launch MAX.
2. In the configuration tree, expand Devices and Interfaces to see the list of installed NI
hardware.
Installed modules appear under the name of their associated chassis.
3. Expand your Chassis tree item.
MAX lists all modules installed in the chassis. Your default names may vary.
Note If you do not see your module listed, press <F5> to refresh the list of
installed modules. If the module is still not listed, power off the system, ensure
the module is correctly installed, and restart.
4. Record the identifier MAX assigns to the hardware. Use this identifier when
programming the PXIe-6570.
5. Self-test the hardware by selecting the item in the configuration tree and clicking Self-
Test in the MAX toolbar.
The MAX self-test of the PXIe-6570 performs a basic verification of hardware resources
and lasts several minutes.
Operating the Digital Pattern Instrument
You can operate the PXIe-6570 through use of the Digital Pattern Editor or the supported ADE
of your choice.

What Should I Do if the PXIe-6570 Doesn't Appear in
MAX?
1. In the MAX configuration tree, expand Devices and Interfaces.
2. Expand the Chassis tree to see the list of installed hardware, and press <F5> to refresh
the list.
3. If the module is still not listed, power off the system, ensure that all hardware is correctly
installed, and restart the system.
4. Navigate to the Device Manager.
Operating System Description
Windows 10 Right-click the Start button, and select Device Manager.
Windows 7 Select Start»Control Panel»Device Manager.
5. If you are using a PXI or PXI Express controller, verify that a National Instruments
entry appears in the System Devices list. Reinstall NI-Digital Pattern Driver and the
module if error conditions appear in the list. If you are using an MXI controller, right-
click PCI-to-PCI Bridge, and select Properties from the shortcut menu to verify that the
bridge is enabled.
What Should I Do if the Module Fails the Self-Test?
1. Restart the system.
2. Launch MAX, and perform the self-test again.

3. Power off the chassis.
4. Reinstall the failed module in a different slot.
5. Power on the chassis.
6. Perform the self-test again.
Why Is the ACCESS LED Off When the Chassis Is
On?
The LEDs may not illuminate until the module has been configured in MAX. Before
proceeding, verify that the PXIe-6570 appears in MAX.
If the ACCESS LED fails to illuminate after you power on the PXI Express chassis, a problem
may exist with the PXI Express power rails, a hardware module, or the LED.
1. Caution Apply external signals only while the PXIe-6570 is powered on.
Applying external signals while the module is powered off may cause damage.
Disconnect any signals from the PXI Express module front panels.
2. Remove any front panel connections from the PXIe-6570.
3. Power off the PXI Express chassis.
4. Remove the module from the PXI Express chassis and inspect it for damage. Do not
reinstall a damaged module.
5. Install the module in a different PXI Express chassis slot from which you removed it.
6. Power on the PXI Express chassis.
7. Verify that the module appears in MAX.
8. Reset the module in MAX and perform a self-test.
If the ACCESS LED still fails to illuminate and failures continue, contact NI technical support
or visit ni.com/support.
