SATA Hard Drive Removal and
Replacement Procedure for
NI 8260 4-Drive Storage Module
This document provides instructions for removing and replacing a SATA
hard drive with your NI 8260 4-Drive Storage Module.
Cautions Before you handle the NI 8260 or the hard drive, discharge any built-up static
charge that may have accumulated. Electrostatic discharge may damage the NI 8260 and/or
the hard drive.
Avoid mounting the hard drive near strong magnetic sources such as loud speakers. Ensure
that the hard drive is not affected by external magnetic fields.
Protect the hard drive and NI 8260 from hard contact with other objects. Impacts may
damage the equipment.
Do not press the cover of the hard drive. Pressing it too hard may cause cover and spindle
motor contact, which would damage the hard drive.
When handling the hard drive, do not touch the printed circuit board. Hold the hard drive
by its edges.
Removing a Hard Drive
Notes You will need to remove Drive 1 before you can remove Drive 0 (Drive 0 is the
bottom drive).
If it is difficult to remove the hard drive, loosen all of the screws holding the installed
hard drives.

Complete the following steps to remove a hard drive from the
NI 8260 4-Drive Storage Module.
1. Place the module on its side and locate the screws holding the hard
drive in place, as shown in Figure 1.

2. Hold the module firmly in place as you remove the four screws from
the drive to be replaced.

3. Pull the drive straight out from the module as indicated by the arrow in
Figure 2.

Installing the Hard Drive
Complete the following instructions to install a hard drive in the
NI 8260 4-Drive Storage Module.
1. Turn the module on its side and insert the hard drive straight into the
open slot by aligning the screw holes on the hard drive as shown in
Figure 3.

2. When the hard drive is fully inserted into the SATA connector, install
all four screws to secure the hard drive in place, as indicated in
Figure 4.

3. Check to see if the screws on all installed hard drives are tightened.
