Release Notes
Thank you for purchasing the Versa® Wireless LAN PC Card or the Versa Wireless LAN
Access Point 500 for use on your NEC Versa notebook, PowerMate®desktop, or MobilePro™
PC Companion.*
To install the Versa Wireless LAN PC Card, select one of the following procedures appropriate
to your system. Topics apply to NEC computers running the Microsoft®Windows®2000
operating system or Windows 98 operating system and to MobilePro systems running the
Microsoft Windows CE operating system. The computer must have PC Card capabilities.
To install the Versa Wireless LAN Access Point 500, see “Installing the Wireless LAN Access
Point 500 Software” procedure at the end of this document.
Installing the Wireless LAN on a System with
Windows 2000
Install the Wireless LAN software and drivers on your NEC Versa or PowerMate as follows. Do
not install the Versa Wireless LAN PC Card in your computer until you have installed the
Wireless LAN software and drivers from the CD.
Do not install the Versa Wireless LAN PC Card in your computer until
you have installed the software and drivers.
1. Power up your computer.
2. Insert the Wireless LAN CD in the CD-ROM drive. The CD auto runs and displays the
Wireless LAN Main Menu. If the menu does not display:
Click Start on the Windows desktop and click Run.
At the popup window, browse to the directory containing the CD (typically drive D).
Double click Setup.exe. The Main Menu displays.
3. At the Main Menu, click View User Documentation. (You need Adobe®Acrobat®Reader®
to view the documentation. If you don’t have it, click Install Acrobat Reader.)
Click PC Card at the View User Documentation screen. Click Windows 2000 and copy
or print “Are You Using MS-Windows 2000?” (CD file PC_Card/Win2000.pdf). You
can also leave the Reader open to view the document.
Click Return to the Main Menu and click Install Software at the Main Menu.
4. At the Install Software Menu, click Client Manager and follow the prompts.
5. At the Install Software Menu, click Windows 2000 Driver and follow the prompts to load
the drivers on your hard drive (typically C:\Program Files\orinoco\driver).
6. Click Return to the Main Menu and click Exit to leave the program. Remove the CD from
the drive.
7. Insert the Wireless LAN PC Card into the PC Card slot on your computer. The Microsoft
Windows Found New Hardware Wizard displays.

8. Follow the wizard prompts, setting the wizard options as described in the “Are You Using
MS-Windows 2000?”document.
Note Be sure to use the Wireless LAN drivers located in the C:\Program Files\orinoco\driver
folder. Do not use the drivers provided in the Windows 2000 operating system driver folder.
9. Complete the installation as described in the “Are You Using MS Windows 2000?”
document.
Installing the Wireless LAN on a System with Windows 98
Install the Wireless LAN software and drivers on your NEC Versa or PowerMate as follows. Do
not install the Versa Wireless LAN PC Card in your computer until you have installed the
Wireless LAN software from the CD.
Do not install the Versa Wireless LAN PC Card in your computer until
you have installed the software and drivers.
1. Power up your computer.
2. Insert the Wireless LAN CD in the CD-ROM drive. The CD auto runs and displays the
Main Menu. If the menu does not display:
Click Start on the Windows desktop and click Run.
At the popup window, browse to the directory containing the CD (typically drive D).
Double click Setup.exe. The Main Menu displays.
3. At the Main Menu, click View User Documentation. (You need Adobe Acrobat Reader on
your system to view the documentation. If you don’t have it, click Install Acrobat Reader.)
Click PC Card at the View User Documentation screen. Click Getting Started Guide
(CD file PC_Card/GSG_PC.pdf) and copy or print Chapter 2, “Installation for
Windows.”You can also leave the Reader open to view the document.
Click Return to the Main Menu.
4. At the Main Menu, click Install Software. At the Install Software Menu, click Client
Manager and follow the prompts to load the software on your computer.
5. Upon completion of loading the software, click Return to the Main Menu and click Exit.
Leave the CD in the drive.
6. Insert the Wireless LAN PC Card into the PC Card slot on your computer. The Microsoft
Windows Found New Hardware Wizard displays.
7. Follow the wizard prompts, setting the wizard options as described in the “Getting Started
Guide.”
When prompted to locate the drivers, browse to the CD-ROM drive with the Wireless
LAN CD, double click the Drivers folder, and select Win_98.
Note Be sure to use the Wireless LAN drivers located on the Wireless LAN CD. Do not use
the drivers provided in the Windows 98 operating system driver folder.
Continue with the wizard.
8. Complete the installation as described in the “Getting Started Guide.”

Installing the Wireless LAN on a System with
Windows CE
Install the Wireless LAN software and drivers on your MobilePro as follows. Do not install the
Versa Wireless LAN PC Card in your MobilePro until you have installed the Wireless LAN
software from the CD.
Do not install the Versa Wireless LAN PC Card in your MobilePro until
you have installed theWireless LAN software.
1. Power up your notebook or desktop computer. Ensure that Microsoft ActiveSync®is
running and that you have established a partnership.
2. Connect your MobilePro to the notebook or desktop computer with the MobilePro
synchronizing cable.
3. Insert the Wireless LAN CD in the notebook or desktop CD-ROM drive. The CD auto runs
and displays the Main Menu. If the menu does not display:
Click Start on the Windows desktop and click Run.
At the popup window, browse to the directory containing the CD (typically drive D).
Double click Setup.exe. The Main Menu displays.
4. At the Main Menu, click View User Documentation. (You need Adobe Acrobat Reader on
your system to view the documentation. If you don’t have it, click Install Acrobat Reader.)
Click PC Card at the View User Documentation screen.
Click User’s Guide (CD file PC_Card/UG_PC.pdf) and copy or print Appendix C,
“Installation for Windows CE.”You can also leave the Reader open to view the
document.
5. Click Return to the Main Menu. Click View CD Contents.
Double click the Drivers folder.
Double click the Win_CE folder and click either Hpc2000 (for Win CE 3.0) or HpcPro
(for Win CE 2.1).
Double click Setup.exe to load the software.
6. At completion of the software installation, click Exit on the Main Menu.
7. Soft reset the MobilePro.
8. Insert the Wireless LAN PC Card in the PC Card slot on the MobilePro. MobilePro
automatically polls for the drivers.
9. At completion of the polling, the MobilePro displays the “ORiNOCOTM Wireless Ethernet
Driver Settings”window.
10. Complete the installation using the procedures in the User’s Guide.
11. Disconnect the synchronizing cable from the MobilePro and the notebook or desktop.
12. Remove the Wireless LAN CD from the notebook or desktop, close all applications, and
power off the notebook or desktop.

Installing the Wireless LAN Access Point 500 Software
Install the Wireless LAN Access Point 500 software on your computer as follows.
1. Power up your computer.
2. Insert the Wireless LAN CD in the CD-ROM drive. The CD auto runs and displays the
Wireless LAN Main Menu. If the menu does not display:
Click Start on the Windows desktop and click Run.
At the popup window, browse to the directory containing the CD (typically drive D).
Double click Setup.exe. The Main Menu displays.
3. At the Main Menu, click View User Documentation. (You need Adobe Acrobat Reader on
your system to view the documentation. If you don’t have it, click Install Acrobat Reader.)
Click Access Points at the View User Documentation screen. Click AP-500 Getting
Started Guide (CD file AP/GSG_AP5.pdf) and copy or print the guide. You can also
leave the Reader open to view the document. If you are a LAN administrator or system
supervisor, you might want to copy or print the “Manager Suite User’s Guide”(CD file
AP/ug_OM.pdf).
Click Return to the Main Menu.
4. At the Main Menu, click Install Software. At the Install Software Menu, click AP Manager
and follow the prompts to install the software on your computer.
5. Upon completion of installing the software, click Return to the Main Menu and click Exit.
Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive.
6. Install the hardware as described in the “AP 500 Getting Started Guide.”
7. Complete the software and hardware installation as described in the “AP 500 Getting
Started Guide”and, if appropriate, in the “Manager Suite User’s Guide.”
