Introduction
This hardware installation guide is for the following NETGEAR switch models:
•8-Port Multi-Gigabit Smart Managed Pro Switch with two 10G Ports, Model MS510TX
•8-Port Multi-Gigabit Smart Managed Pro Switch with PoE+ and two 10G Ports, Model MS510TXPP
The switch provides four multispeed Gigabit Ethernet and four 1G Ethernet RJ-45 copper ports with one dedicated
10G RJ-45 copper uplink port and one dedicated SFP+ fiber uplink port that supports 10G and 1G.Two of the
four multispeed ports support 5G, 2.5G, and 1G.The other two multispeed ports support 2.5G and 1G. (The
10G RJ-45 copper uplink port also supports 5G, 2.5G and 1G.)
Model MS510TXPP supports Power over Ethernet plus (PoE+) on all four multispeed ports and four 1G ports
so that you can let the switch provide power to PoE-capable devices such as WiFi access points,VoIP phones,
and IP security cameras.Model MS510TXPP can supply up to 30W PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) to each port, with a
maximum PoE power budget of 180W across all active PoE+ ports.
This hardware installation guide complements the installation guide that came with your switch.The resource
CD that came with your switch includes software and additional documentation and support resources.

Overview
The switch provides two multispeed gigabit copper ports that support 5G, 2.5G, and 1G; another two
multispeed gigabit copper ports that support 2.5G and 1G; four 1G RJ-45 copper ports;one dedicated 10G
copper uplink port (which also supports 5G, 2.5G and 1G); and one dedicated SFP+ fiber uplink port that
supports 10G and 1G. All copper ports use RJ-45 connectors.
The SFP+ port requires a standard small form-factor pluggable (SFP) gigabit interface converter (GBIC,
also referred to as a transceiver module), which is sold separately from the switch.The switch integrates
78 Gbps full-duplex, nonblocking switch fabric for high-performance workgroups.
The PoE model supports PoE+ on all copper ports (except for the 10G uplink port) with a maximum PoE
power budget of 180W across all active PoE+ ports.

The switch provides administrative management options that let you configure, monitor, and control the
network.Using the web browser–based management interface, you can configure the switch and the network,
including the ports, the managementVLAN,VLANs for traffic control, link aggregation for increased bandwidth,
Quality of Service (QoS) for prioritizing traffic, and network security.
Initial discovery of the switch on the network requires the Smart Control Center program, which runs on a
Windows-based computer and is included on the resource CD.If you do not use aWindows-based computer,
get the IP address of the switch from the DHCP server in the network or use an IP scanner utility.
After discovery, you can configure the switch using the web management interface for advanced setup and
configuration of features, or the Smart Control Center program for very basic setup.For more information,
see the user manual, which you can download from downloadcenter.netgear.com.
You can install the switch freestanding or rack mounted in a wiring closet or equipment room.The switch
is IEEE compliant and offers low latency. All ports can automatically negotiate to the highest speed, which
makes the switch very suitable for a mixed environment with multispeed Gigabit Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet,
and Fast Ethernet.
Forspeeds of10Gbps andhigherspeeds,use Category 6(Cat 6) cablesterminated with RJ-45connectors;
for speeds from 5 Gbps to 10 Gbps, use Cat 5e cables terminated with RJ-45 connectors; and for speeds
from 10 Mbps to 5 Gbps, including 2.5 Gbps, use Cat 5e or higher-rated Ethernet cables terminated with
RJ-45 connectors.

Safety Instructions andWarnings
Use the following safety guidelines to ensure your own personal safety and to help protect your system from
potential damage.
To reduce the risk of bodily injury, electrical shock, fire, and damage to the equipment, observe the following
precautions:
•This product is designed for indoor use only in a temperature-controlled (0–50°C) and humidity-controlled
(90 percent maximum relative humidity, noncondensing) environment.
Any device that is located outdoors and connected to this product must be properly grounded and surge
protected.
To the extend permissible by applicable law, failure to follow these guidelines could result in damage
to your NETGEAR product, which might not be covered by NETGEAR’s warranty.
•Observe and follow service markings:
-Do not service any product except as explained in your system documentation.
-Opening or removing covers that are marked with the triangular symbol with a lightning bolt can
expose you to electrical shock.We recommend that only a trained technician services components
inside these compartments.
•If any of the following conditions occur, unplug the product from the electrical outlet and replace the part
or contact your trained service provider:
-The power cable, extension cable, or plug is damaged.
-An object fell into the product.
-The product was exposed to water.
-The product was dropped or damaged.
-The product does not operate correctly when you follow the operating instructions.
•Keep your system away from radiators and heat sources.Also, do not block cooling vents.
•Do not spill food or liquids on your system components, and never operate the product in a wet
environment.If the system gets wet, see the appropriate section in your troubleshooting guide, or contact
your trained service provider.
•Do not push any objects into the openings of your system.Doing so can cause fire or electric shock by
shorting out interior components.

•Use the product only with approved equipment.
•Allow the product to cool before removing covers or touching internal components.
•Operate the product only from the type of external power source indicated on the electrical ratings label.
If you are not sure of the type of power source required, consult your service provider or local power
company.
•To avoid damaging your system, be sure that the voltage selection switch (if provided) on the power
supply is set to match the power at your location:
-115V, 60 Hz in most of North and South America and some Far Eastern countries such as South
Korea and Taiwan
-100V, 50 Hz in eastern Japan and 100V, 60 Hz in western Japan
-230V, 50 Hz in most of Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East
•Be sure that attached devices are electrically rated to operate with the power available in your location.
•Use only approved power cables.If you were not provided with a power cable for your system or for
any AC-powered option intended for your system, purchase a power cable approved for your country.
The power cable must be rated for the product and for the voltage and current marked on the product
electrical ratings label.The voltage and current rating of the cable must be greater than the ratings
marked on the product.
•To help prevent electric shock, plug the system and peripheral power cables into properly grounded
electrical outlets.
•The peripheral power cables are equipped with three-prong plugs to help ensure proper grounding.Do
not use adapter plugs or remove the grounding prong from a cable.If you must use an extension cable,
use a three-wire cable with properly grounded plugs.
•Observe extension cable and power strip ratings.Make sure that the total ampere rating of all products
plugged into the extension cable or power strip does not exceed 80 percent of the ampere ratings limit
for the extension cable or power strip.
•To help protect your system from sudden, transient increases and decreases in electrical power, use a
surge suppressor, line conditioner, or uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
•Position system cables and power cables carefully. Route cables so that they cannot be stepped on or
tripped over. Be sure that nothing rests on any cables.
•Do not modify power cables or plugs. Consult a licensed electrician or your power company for site
modifications.
•Always follow your local and national wiring rules.

Front Panel
Model MS510TX provides four 1G ports, two 2.5G ports, two 5G ports, one 10G port, and one SFP+ port.
Model MS510TXPP is a PoE+ model that provides four 1G PoE+ ports, two 2.5G PoE+ ports, two 5G PoE+
ports, one 10G port, and one SFP+ port.

The back panel contains a Kensington lock slot, a console port that is not for customer use (it is for NETGEAR

The following sections describe the hardware interfaces on the switch.
RJ-45 Ports for 10/100/1000M and 2.5G/5G/10G BASE-T Ethernet
Connectivity
All RJ-45 copper ports support autosensing.When you insert a cable into an RJ-45 port, the switch
automatically ascertains the maximum speed. Depending on the port, the switch can autodetect 10 Mbps,
100 Mbps, or 1 Gbps and duplex mode (half-duplex or full-duplex), or 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps, or 10 Gbps of the
attached device.All ports support Ethernet cables that are terminated with 8-pin RJ-45 connectors.The
following table describes the network cables that you can use for the switch connections and the speeds
that these cables can support.

When you insert a cable into the switch’s RJ-45 port, the switch automatically performs the following actions:
•Senses whether the cable is a straight-through or crossover cable.
•Determines whether the link to the attached device requires a normal connection (such as when you
are connecting the port to a computer) or an uplink connection (such as when you are connecting the
port to a router, switch, or hub).
•Automatically configures the RJ-45 port to enable communications with the attached device.The Auto
Uplink technology compensates for setting uplink connections while eliminating concern about whether
to use crossover or straight-through cables when you attach devices.
For model MS510TXPP, copper ports 1 through 8 also support Power over Ethernet (PoE+).
SFP+ Port for Fiber Connectivity
To enable fiber connections on the switch, SFP+ fiber ports accommodate standard small form-factor
pluggable (SFP) gigabit interface converters (GBICs, also referred to as transceiver modules) for fiber
connectivity. GBICs are sold separately from the switch.
The switch supports the NETGEAR SFP and SFP+ transceiver modules and cables that are listed in the
following table.

Reset Button
The switch provides a Reset button on the front panel so that you can reboot the switch. Save the
configuration before you press the Reset button.
To reboot the switch:
1. Insert a device such as a straightened paper clip into the opening.
2. Press the recessed Reset button.

Factory Defaults Button
To return the switch to its factory default settings:
1. Insert a device such as a straightened paper clip into the opening.
2. Press the recessed Factory Defaults button for more than three seconds.
The switch reboots and returns to its factory default settings.
USB Port
The switch provides one USB 2.0 port that lets you upgrade firmware from a disk and back up the configuration
to a storage device.
A device that you attach to the USB port must comply with the following requirements:
•The USB device must support USB 2.0.
•The USB device must support the FAT32 file type.The NTFS file type is not supported.

Multispeed Backbone Switching
You can use the switch as a multispeed backbone switch in a network that serves network components
such as high-speed servers, a 2.5G NAS, 2.5G (gaming) computers, and 1G computers.

Multispeed PoE+ Access Points
Model MS510TXPP supports 8 PoE+ ports.The switch can supply up to 30W PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) to each
port up to its total maximum PoE power budget of 180W across all active PoE+ ports.
Supplied power is prioritized according to the port order, up to the total power budget of the device.Port 1
receives the highest PoE priority, while port 8 is relegated to the lowest PoE priority.
If the power requirements for attached devices exceed the total power budget of the switch, the PoE power
to the device on the highest-numbered active PoE port is disabled to make sure that the devices connected
to the higher-priority, lower-numbered PoE ports are supported first.
Although a device is listed as an 802.3at PoE+-powered or 802.3af PoE-powered
device, it might not require the maximum power limit that is specified by its IEEE
standard. Many devices require less power, allowing all 8 PoE+ ports to be active
simultaneously when the devices correctly report their PoE class to the switch.
