1. A Short Description
The TLM 103 is a studio condenser microphone
with cardioid po ar pattern.
Its most important features are extraordinari y ow
se f noise eve combined with highest output ca-
pabi ity, transformer ess circuit, extraordinari y
true sound transduction, free of co oration.
The microphone has a ba anced, transformer ess
output. The 3-pin XLR connector has the fo owing
pin assignments:
Pin 1: 0 V/ground
Pin 2: odulation (+phase)
Pin 3: odulation (–phase)
The output sensitivity is 23 mV/Pa = –32.5 dB re.
1 V/Pa. The microphone is phantom powered from
48 V, 3 mA (IEC 1938).
The TLM 103 is addressed from the front, marked
with the Neumann ogo.
The microphone comes in a wooden case inc ud-
ing the SG 1 swive mount.

1. Kurzbeschreibung
Das Kondensatormikrophon TLM 103 ist ein Stu-
diomikrophon mit der Richtcharakteristik Niere.
Es zeichnet sich aus durch extrem niedriges Eigen-
geräusch und höchste Aussteuerbarkeit, transfor-
mator ose Scha tungstechnik, besonders saubere,
freie und verfärbungsfreie K angübertragung.
Das Mikrophon hat einen symmetrischen, übertrag-
er osen Ausgang. Der 3-po ige XLR-Steckverbin-
der hat fo gende Be egung:
Pin 1: 0 V/ asse
Pin 2: odulation (+Phase)
Pin 3: odulation (–Phase)
Fe dübertragungsfaktor 23 mV/Pa = –32,5 dB re.
1V/Pa. Das Mikrophon wird mit 48 V, 3 mA phan-
tomgespeist (IEC 1938).
Das TLM 103 wird von der Vorderseite besprochen,
die durch das Neumann-Logo gekennzeichnet ist.
Das Mikrophon wird in einem Ho zetui zusammen
mit dem Stativge enk SG 1 ge iefert.
2. Das Kondensatormikrophon TL 103
Das Kondensatormikrophon TLM 103 ist ein Stu-
diomikrophon der Serie fet 100 mit der Richtcha-
rakteristik Niere.
Die Buchstaben TLM stehen für Transformator o-
ses Mikrophon.
Der zur Leistungsanpassung der Mikrophonaus-
gangsspannung an die Betriebsspannung üb i-
cherweise verwendete Übertrager ist im TLM 103
durch eine e ektronische Scha tung ersetzt, die –
wie ein Übertrager – für eine gute Unsymmetrie-
dämpfung sorgt. Daher werden Störsigna e, die auf
die symmetrische Modu ations eitung einwirken,
wie gewohnt unterdrückt.
Die Eigenstörspannung des TLM 103 konnte ge-
genüber verg eichbaren Mikrophontypen stark
gesenkt werden, wobei das Mikrophon Scha -
druckpege von 138 dB unverzerrt überträgt und ei-
nen Dynamikumfang von 131 dB zur Verfügung
ste t (A-bewertet).
Das TLM 103 wird von der Vorderseite bespro-
chen, die durch das Neumann-Logo gekennzeich-
net ist.
Die im Drahtgef echtkorb des Mikrophons befind-
iche Großmembrankapse K 103 besitzt einen bis
ca. 5 kHz ebenen Frequenzgang und im darüber-
iegenden Frequenzbereich eine breite, f ache Prä-
senzanhebung von 4 dB. Die Kapse basiert auf
der des Mikrophons U 87, indem deren E ektrode
und Membran Verwendung finden.
Da zum Erreichen der genannten Mikrophoneigen-
schaften keine Resonanzwirkungen genutzt wer-
den, ist das Impu sverha ten des Mikrophons
ausgezeichnet, und es vermag a e Ausg eichsvor-
gänge in Musik und Sprache unverfä scht zu über-
tragen.
Die Kapse ist zum Schutz gegen Körperscha über-
tragung e astisch ge agert.
Da der Verstärker des TLM 103 bis unter 20 Hz i-
near ver äuft, können auch extrem niederfrequen-
te Signa e unverfä scht übertragen werden.
Andererseits ist das Mikrophon dadurch empfind-
icher für tieffrequente Störungen wie Körperscha
oder Pop- und Windgeräusche. Daher empfieh t
sich eventue die Verwendung der e astischen
Aufhängung EA 1 (mt), des Popschirms PS 15 oder
PS 20 a oder des Windschutzes WS 87.
2. The TL 103 Condenser icrophone
The TLM 103 condenser microphone is a studio
microphone of the fet 100 series with a cardioid
po ar pattern.
The etters TLM stand for Transformer ess Micro-
phone.
The transformer which used to coup e a micro-
phone’s output to the supp y vo tage, was re-
p aced in the TLM 103 by an e ectronic circuit
which, ike a transformer, maintains the exce ent
common mode rejection (CMR). Interference in-
duced in the ba anced modu ation ine is therefore
suppressed as usua .
The se f-noise eve of the TLM 103 is much ower
than that of comparab e microphone mode s whi e
its over oad capabi ity extends to 138 dB SPL, pro-
viding a dynamic range of 131 dB (A-weighted).
The TLM 103 is addressed from the front, marked
with the Neumann ogo.
Its gri e houses the arge diaphragm K 103 cap-
su e. It has a inear frequency response up to some
5 kHz with a wide f at presence boost of 4 dB at
the top end. The capsu e is based on that of the
U 87 microphone and uses their back e ectrode
and diaphragm.
No resonance effects are used to obtain the char-
acteristics mentioned above. As a consequence,
the microphone features exce ent transient be-
havior and transmits a transient phenomena of
music or voice without distortion.
In order to protect the capsu e from mechanica
shock transmission it is e astica y suspended.
As the TLM 103‘s amp ifier is inear a so be ow
20 Hz, extreme y ow frequency signa s can be
transmitted without distortion as we .
On the other hand the microphone is therefore
more sensitive to ow-frequency noises ike struc-
ture-borne or wind and pop disturbances. For spe-
cific app ications it is therefore recommended to
use protective accessories as the EA 1 (mt) e as-
tic suspension, the PS 15 or PS 20 a pop screens
or the WS 87 windscreen.

3. Power Supply
3.1 Phantom Powering
The fet 100 series microphones are phantom-
powered at 48 V (P48, IEC 1938).
With phantom powering the dc from the positive
supp y termina is divided via two identica resis-
tors, one ha f of the dc f owing through each au-
dio (modu ation) conductor to the microphone, and
returning to the vo tage source via the cab e
shie d. Phantom powering provides a fu y com-
patib e connecting system, since no potentia dif-
ferences exist between the two audio conductors.
Studio out ets so powered wi therefore a so ac-
cept dynamic microphones and ribbon micro-
phones as we as the modu ation conductors of
tube-equipped condenser microphones without the
need to switch off the dc supp y vo tage.
No harm is done even if a Neumann phantom pow-
er supp y is connected to the inputs of micro-
phones which are phantom powered from another
source.
2.1 icrophone Versions and Output Wiring

The TLM 103 microphone has a matt satin finish
and is equipped with a 3-po e XLR connector. The
microphone is wired as per DIN EN 60268-12 or
IEC 60268-12:
Modu ation is connected to pins 2 and 3, the
shie d to pin 1. A sudden sound pressure rise in
front of the diaphragm causes a positive vo tage
to appear at pin 2.

2.2 icrophone Cables
The e ectroacoustic properties of the microphones
are not affected even by very ong (Neumann) ca-
b es. However, if cab es are we over 300 m, a
fa -off in the upper frequency range becomes ap-
parent.
Neumann offers a wide range of cab es. On y a se-
ection is presented here. Other cab e engths or
cab e materia s without connectors are avai ab e
on request.

Das Mikrophon TLM 103 besitzt eine nicke matte
Oberf äche und ist mit einem 3-po igen XLR-Steck-
verbinder ausgerüstet. Die Zuordnung der Mikro-
phonansch üsse entspricht DIN EN 60268-12 bzw.
IEC 60268-12:
Die Modu ationsadern iegen an Pin 2 und 3, die
Abschirmung an Pin 1. Bei einem Scha druckan-
stieg vor der Mikrophonmembran tritt an Pin 2 eine
positive Spannung auf.

2.2 ikrophonkabel
Die akustischen Eigenschaften der Mikrophone
werden auch durch sehr ange (Neumann-) Kabe
nicht beeinf usst. Erst bei Kabe ängen deut ich
über 300 m macht sich ein Abfa im oberen Fre-
quenzbereich bemerkbar.
Neumann bietet ein vie fä tiges Kabe sortiment
an, von dem hier ein Ausschnitt erwähnt wird. An-
dere a s die genannten Kabe ängen sowie Kabe -
materia ohne Armaturen sind auf Wunsch iefer-
bar.

3. Stromversorgung
3.1 Phantomspeisung
Die Mikrophone der Serie fet 100 werden mit 48 V
phantomgespeist (P48, IEC 1938).
Bei der Phantomspeisung f ießt der Speisestrom
vom positiven Po der Spannungsque e über die
e ektrische Mitte der beiden Modu ationsadern
zum Mikrophon. Er wird hierzu über zwei g eich-
große Widerstände beiden Tonadern g eichsinnig
zugeführt. Die Rück eitung des G eichstroms er-
fo gt über den Kabe schirm. Zwischen beiden Mo-
du ationsadern besteht a so keine Potentia diffe-
renz. Daher ist mit der Phantomspeisung eine kom-
patib e Ansch usstechnik mög ich:
Auf die Ansch ussdosen können wah weise auch
dynamische Mikrophone oder Bändchenmikropho-
ne sowie die Modu ationskabe röhrenbestückter
Kondensatormikrophone gescha tet werden, ohne
dass die Speiseg eichspannung abgescha tet wer-
den muss.
Der Ausgang eines Neumann-Phantomspeisegerä-
tes darf auch auf bereits anderweitig phantomge-
speiste Mikrophoneingänge gesteckt werden.

3.2 ac Supply Operation
A P48 power supp ies in accordance with
IEC 1938 which provide at east 3 mA per channe ,
are suitab e for powering the microphones.
The Neumann P48 power supp y unit bears the
designation N 248. It is designed to power two
mono condenser microphones or one stereo micro-
phone at 48 V ± 1 V, max. 2 x 6 mA (see a so Neu-
mann bu etin no. 68832: ”Phantom 48 VDC Pow-
er Supp ies“).
The assignment of the microphone termina s and
the modu ation po arity at the power supp y out-
put are identica to those at the microphone.
The N 248 supp ies one stereo microphone, or two
mono condenser microphones with 48 V phantom
power (P48). A connectors are of XLR 3 type. The
audio signa outputs are DC-free.

3.3 Battery Powering

The assignment of the microphone termina s and
the modu ation po arity at the power supp y out-
put are identica to those at the microphone.
3.4 Operation with Unbalanced or
Center Tap Grounded lnputs
The BS 48 i, BS 48 i-2 and N 248 phantom 48 Vdc
power supp ies are dc-free so that no transformer
is required for connection to unba anced inputs.
3.2 Betrieb mit Netzgeräten
Für die Stromversorgung sind a e P48-Netzgerä-
te geeignet, die mindestens 3 mA je Kana abge-
ben.
Das Neumann P48-Netzgerät hat die Bezeichnung
N 248. Es ist zur Stromversorgung zweier Mono-
Kondensatormikrophone oder eines Stereomikro-
phons mit 48 V ± 1 V, maxima 2 x 6 mA, geeignet
(siehe auch Neumann-Druckschrift 68832: „48 V-
Phantomspeisegeräte“).
Die Zuordnung der Mikrophonansch üsse und die
Po arität der Modu ationsadern ist am Ausgang
des Speisegerätes die g eiche wie am Mikrophon.
Das Netzgerät N 248 versorgt ein oder zwei Mikro-
phone mit 48 V-Phantomspeisung P48. A e An-
sch üsse mit XLR 3-F anschdosen. Die Modu ati-
onsausgänge sind g eichspannungsfrei.
Das Gerät ist in drei Ausführungen erhä t ich:

Das Gerät BS 48 i-2 ist mit 5-po igen, das BS 48 i
mit 3-po igen XLR-Steckverbindern ausgerüstet.

3.4 Betrieb an unsymmetrischen oder
mittengeerdeten Eingängen
Die 48 V-Phantom-Speisegeräte BS 48 i, BS 48 i-2
und N 248 haben g eichspannungsfreie Ausgänge,
so dass für den Ansch uss an unsymmetrische Ein-
gänge kein Übertrager erforder ich ist.

Beim TLM 103 ist Pin 2 normgemäß die „heiße
Phase“. Für unsymmetrische Eingänge muss PIN 3
am Ausgang des Speisegerätes an Masse ge egt
werden (siehe Abbi dung 1).
Bei vie en anderen a s den o.g. Phantomspeisege-
räten iegen nicht nur die Modu ations eitungen
zum Mikrophon auf dem Potentia der Speisespan-
nung von +48 V, sondern auch die vom Speisege-
rät abgehenden Modu ations eitungen. Für die in
der Studiotechnik a gemein üb ichen symmetri-
schen und erdfreien Verstärker und Mischpu tein-
gänge ist dies ohne Be-
deutung. Dagegen wird
die Speisespannung beim
Ansch uss an einseitig
oder mittengeerdete Ver-
stärkereingänge kurzge-
sch ossen, und es ist kein
Betrieb mög ich. Dann be-
stehen fo gende Lösungs-
mög ichkeiten:
a) In mittengeerdeten
Geräten mit Eingangs-
übertrager (z.B. einige
NAGRA-Geräte) kann die
betreffende Erdverbin-
dung fast immer ohne
Nachtei e für die Funkti-
on des Gerätes aufge-
trennt werden.
b) In jede abgehende
Modu ations eitung kann
zur Abb ockung der 48 V-
G eichspannung eine RC-
Kombination eingefügt
werden (siehe Abbi dung 2
und Neumann-Informati-
on Nr. 84 221).
In the case of the TLM 103 condenser microphone
pin 2 is the “hot phase“, in accordance with the
standard, and pin 3 of the output of the power sup-
p y must be connected to earth (see Fig. 1).
In the case of many other phantom powering units
(except those mentioned above), not on y the mod-
u ation eads to the microphone, but a so the out-
going modu ation eads from the powering unit,
are at the potentia of the feed vo tage (+48 V).
This is of no significance for the ba anced, f oat-
ing amp ifier and mixing conso e inputs in gener-
a studio use. On the oth-
er hand, the feed vo tage

5. Einige Hinweise zur Pflege von
ikrophonen
Staubschutz verwenden: Mikrophone, die nicht im
Einsatz sind, so te man nicht auf dem Stativ ein-
stauben assen. Mit einem Staubschutzbeute
(nicht fusse nd) wird dies verhindert. Wird ein Mi-
krophon ängere Zeit nicht verwendet, so te es
staubgeschützt bei norma em Umgebungsk ima
aufbewahrt werden.
Popschutz verwenden: Ein Popschutz hat nicht nur
die Aufgabe, bei Gesangsaufnahmen die Entste-
hung von Pop auten zu verhindern. Er vermeidet
auch effizient, dass sich von der Feuchtigkeit des
Atems bis hin zu Essensresten unerwünschte Par-
tike auf der Membran ab agern.
Keine übera terten Windschutze verwenden: Auch
Schaumstoff a tert. Das Materia kann brüchig und
krüme ig werden. Anstatt das Mikrophon zu schüt-
zen, kann er dann zur Verunreinigung der Mikro-
phonkapse führen. Übera terte Windschutze a so
bitte entsorgen.
Funktionstest: Moderne Kondensatormikrophone
nehmen durch autes Ansprechen keinen Schaden.
Zur Kontro e, ob ein so ches Mikrophon ange-
sch ossen ist, so te man es aber keinesfa s anpus-
ten oder anpoppen, da dies einem akustischen Si-
gna von mehr a s 140 dB (!) entsprechen kann.
Norma e Sprache genügt zum Funktionstest vö ig.
Se bsthi fe kann teuer sein! Leider kommt es doch
vor, dass durch eine Se bstreparatur mehr beschä-
digt a s behoben wird. Insbesondere das Reinigen
verschmutzter Kapse n erfordert vie Erfahrung und
die Hand eines Fachmanns. Der Lackschutz auf
P atinen zeigt u.a. an, dass dort nicht ge ötet wer-
den darf. Einige Bautei e sind spezie se ektiert
und können nicht durch Materia von der Stange
ersetzt werden. Um unnötige Kosten zu vermeiden,
empfieh t sich die Einsendung an unsere Vertre-
tungen oder an uns.
Inspektion durchführen assen: Rege mäßiges
Durchchecken des Mikrophonbestands, wie es ei-
nige Schauspie häuser und Rundfunkansta ten
praktizieren, kann bei der Früherkennung von
Schäden he fen. Leichte Verschmutzungen assen
sich eher beseitigen, a s eine untrennbar in die
Membran eingebrannte Nikotinschicht. Insbeson-
dere bei Mikrophonen im Ver eih und in verunrei-
nigenden Umgebungen empfieh t sich die rege -
mäßige Kontro e, deren Kosten im Verg eich zu
einer aufwendigen Reparatur sehr gering sind.
5. Hints on icrophone aintenance
Use a dust cover: Microphones not in use shou d
not be eft on the stand gathering dust. This can
be prevented by the use of a non-f uffy dust cov-
er. When not in use for a onger period, the micro-
phone shou d be sea ed against dust and stored
under standard c imatic conditions.
Use a pop screen: A pop screen not on y prevents
the occurrence of p osive pop noises in voca re-
cordings, but a so efficient y prevents unwanted
partic es, from respiratory moisture to food rem-
nants, from sett ing on the diaphragm.
Avoid the use of o d wind shie ds: As the foam
materia of a wind shie d ages it can become brit-
t e and crumb y. Instead of protecting the micro-
phone, an o d wind shie d can thus ead to soi ing
of the microphone capsu e. Therefore p ease dis-
pose of worn-out wind shie ds.
Function testing: A though modern condenser mi-
crophones are not harmed by high sound pressure
eve s, one shou d under no circumstances use a
pop-test to check whether the microphone is con-
nected and the channe on the mixing conso e is
pu ed up, since this can resu t in sound pressure
eve s of over 140 dB! Norma speech is quite suf-
ficient for function testing.
Do-it-yourse f repairs can be expensive! Unfortu-
nate y, do-it-yourse f repairs sometimes do more
harm than good. C eaning soi ed capsu es in par-
ticu ar requires considerab e experience and an
expert touch. The protective acquer on circuit
boards indicates, among other things, p aces
which must not be so dered. Certain components
are specia y se ected and cannot be rep aced by
standard parts. To avoid unnecessary expense, we
recommend sending defective microphones to us
or our representatives for servicing.
Regu ar inspections: Sending in microphones reg-
u ar y for inspection, as practiced by some theaters
and broadcasting corporations, can aid in the ear-
y detection of damage. S ight soi ing can be re-
moved much more easi y than a nicotine ayer in-
extricab y bonded to the diaphragm. Regu ar in-
spections are particu ar y to be recommended for
microphones which are rented or are used in dusty
or smoky environments, since the costs are ow in
comparison with the cost of a major overhau .

Schwanenha s montiert. Eine K ammer mit einer
