Preparing the Quietek for Use
• Insert the power supply lead into the
receptacle (power jack) on the back of
the Quietek control box, and plug the
power supply into a standard outlet.
• Connect the CO2 delivery hose to its
fitting on the control box, and attach the
other end to the barbed fitting on the
cage cover. The Quietek 2 has fittings
for operation with up to two cage
setups.
Ensure that the cage cover is large
enough so that bent edges fit entirely
over the rim of the cage. If any part of
the bent metal edge of the lid is in
contact with the cage rim, the lid may
not seat properly.
Adjusting the Settings
Before you begin, determine the
volume of your cage in liters. A cage
volume calculator is available at
cagevol.nextadvance.com.
• Select the setting that you wish to
adjust (A or B) using the "Cage Size"
switch. The Quietek can store two
different cage volume/flow rate
combinations.
• Turn the key to the "Adjust" position.
• Set the cage volume using the "Cage
Vol." knob. Measurements are shown in
liters.
• Set the desired fill rate using the "Fill
Rate" knob. Flow rate is controllable
within the range specified in the
AVMA guidelines.
• RapidFill option: Press the Start/Stop
button to configure RapidFill. Turn the
Cage Size knob to set the time you wish
RapidFill to be available during the run.
• Turn the key to the "Run Mode"
position. If the key is removed in run
mode, the machine will still run and the
settings will not be adjustable.
Note: For the Quietek 2, settings A or
B (depending on the orientation of the
"Cage Size" switch) will apply to every
cage or chamber that is connected to the
device. You cannot have one cage run
on A and the other one run on B at the
same time.
Performing a Run
• For every cage or chamber being
used, confirm that the lid is properly
fitted, with the lining in full contact
with the cage rim.
• Open the valve on the CO2 source.
• Ensure that the key lock is in the "Run
Mode" position. Run will not start if
the key is in the "Adjust" position.
• Press the "Start/Stop" button. If you
are using the Quietek 2, press the
"Start/Stop" button(s) for the cage(s)
that you want to use. The "CO2 fill"
light corresponding to the cage you are
using will illuminate, and the timer will
count down until set cage volume of
gas has been delivered.
• When the cage is filled, the CO2 flow
will stop. The "Immersion" light will
illuminate and the timer will show time
elapsed since immersion began.

• To stop the run, press "Start/Stop"
again. The controller will reset, and
another run can be performed with the
same settings if desired. The CO2
supply does not need to be shut off
between runs.
• RapidFill option: RapidFill is enabled
when the last bar on the rate display
begins to flash. Turn the "Fill Rate"
knob 1/2 turn to the right to enter
RapidFill mode. The rate display will
begin to scroll. The run can still be
stopped by pushing the Start/Stop
button.
• If you wish to perform a run with
different settings, you can change the
"Cage Size" switch to the other position
if the settings have been saved
previously. To perform a run with new
settings, adjust the parameters as
described in the "Adjusting the
Settings" section above.
Emergency stop: The run can be
stopped at any time by pressing the
"Start/Stop" button.
Note: If the CO2 pressure is below 15
psi, the digital display will alternately
flash "CO2" and "LO".
Purging the Chamber
To purge, tip the chamber over to
release CO2. This process may take
several minutes based on the size of the
chamber and air flow in the area.
Cleanup
After use, shut off the CO2 supply.
Wipe down the inside of the lid with
warm water and then spray with 70%
ethanol or another suitable cleaner. The
unit may be unplugged if desired.
The Quietek controller box can also be
wiped down with a water and mild
detergent such as Alconox. Ethanol or
other alcohols will dull the finish of the
box. The unit should not be immersed
in liquid.
Troubleshooting
If the Quietek doesn’t turn on, the
plug of the power supply cord may not
be in a live wall outlet or the power
supply connector may not be fully
inserted in the socket on the side of the
Quietek.
If the cage volume indicator is
flashing "CO2" and "LO", the CO2
pressure from the supply tank or line is
too low for the Quietek to operate
properly. Check the CO2 source to make
sure that it is securely connected to the
device.
Note: Some institutions may require
external confirmation of the gas flow
rate from the Quietek controller. This
may be most conveniently done by
disconnecting the lid and attaching a
precision CO2 flowmeter to the tube.
