SAFETY NOTICE
This manual contains important information regarding the safe & proper setup and use of the
bed. It is important that anybody involved should have read and understood its contents. Failure
to do so could result in damage to the bed and may invalidate the warranty. Please be aware that
elements of the bed are heavy. Those involved should observe the safe lifting and handling
techniques recommended under Health & Safety Regulations.
PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING GUIDANCE:

ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION
OPERATION
RE-SITING
MAINTENANCE & CARE
The bed should be assembled by suitably competent persons.
Ensure that the local electricity mains voltage corresponds to that marked on the main controller label
before connecting to the supply.
Ensure that cables from actuators are plugged into the main controller correctly.
The fuse in the mains ‘safety connector’ plug should not exceed 5amps.
The bed should be located on a level surface & not sited on loose floor coverings.
The cable from the mains electricity supply must be routed clear of the lifting mechanism & casters to
avoid danger of shearing or crushing.
The brake on each caster must be applied whilst the bed is in use (see also Page 6).
Do not allow children underneath the bed or to use the controls.
Do not position objects under the lifting mechanism of the bed.
Always ensure that limbs or body parts of both user and carer are not protruding from the bed, are not
between the side-rails or in the way of the lifting mechanism when using the powered functions.
Never exceed the maximum usage period of 2 minutes continuous use in any 18 minute period for any
powered function. Use exceeding this may cause the actuator to ‘close down’ for a period to recover.
If, during operation, there are any unusual noises or smells, disconnect the bed from the mains electricity
power supply immediately. Ensure that no cables are trapped.
When raising/lowering the bed, be aware of any fixtures such as window sills, shelf units and electrical
power sockets which may obstruct the raising of the bed or cause damage to the fixtures. Re-position the
bed if necessary.
If moving the bed to a different location, always ensure that all bed functions are at their lowest position
and remember to remove the plug from the mains electricity power supply.
Release all brakes before moving the bed, otherwise damage may occur.
Never use the side-rails to push or pull the bed. Always use the head and foot boards.
With or without occupant, the bed should only be moved at slow speed and not pushed over a threshold
strip greater than 2cm in height.
Once the bed is re-sited, remember to re-apply the brakes.
All grub-screws and mechanical fixings should be checked regularly for tightness.
Use a damp cloth with normal household cleaners or warm soapy water to clean the bed. Do not use
cleaning agents containing ammonia, abrasives or strong solvents.
Mechanical cleaning, scouring, pressure hoses or automated cleaning will damage the bed.
All electrical actuators are fitted with maintenance-free, self-lubricating bearings and no attempt should
be made to oil or grease these parts.
A suitably qualified service engineer should check all electrical parts & cables and mechanical functions
for correct operation at least once every year.
Any unauthorised modifications, adjustments or alterations will invalidate the product warranty.
Repairs should only be carried out by a suitably qualified competent engineer.
This bed is classed as a ‘double insulated appliance’, although the supplied safety connector is not. If the
bed is used in commercial premises, customers should seek the advice of a qualified electrician regarding
PAT2 test recommendations.

SECTION ONE: FEATURES OF THE ROTA-PRO®BED
Use of other manufacturers’ products with our beds may take a bed/mattress combination out
of BS EN 60601-2-52 specification and may increase the entrapment risk. Neither Nexus DMS Ltd,
nor any of its employees, can take responsibility for any issues arising from use of such products.
FUNCTIONALITY
Rota-Pro has a number of electrically operated profiling functions –head rest, back rest, leg rest
and bed height are adjustable together with Fowler position knee-break. Similarly powered
functions raise the user from a lying position and rotate to a chair position to assist transfer from
the bed and re-entry from a standing position. Removable hand-rails provide additional support
during transfer. The functions are powered by linear actuators which are sealed and rely on
maintenance-free permanent lubrication. They are ingress protected to IP54 standard.
HAND CONTROL
Rota-Pro functions are operated using a hand control connected to the main controller via a spiral
cable. A description on the hand control face indicates which function each button operates. The
hand control is ingress protected to IP54 standard. All electrical functions are isolated from the
mains supply & operate at 24v DC low voltage.
SAFETY CONNECTOR
A 240V mains electrical ‘safety connector’ with a three pin UK plug at one end and a two pin in-line
plug at the other is supplied. This can reduce the likelihood of damage or injury if the bed is moved
before being unplugged from the mains power supply socket.
MATTRESS SUPPORT
The mattress support is constructed from metal mesh which allows the mattress to breathe and so
prolongs its life.
TIMBER WORK / CASTERS
The bed is supplied complete with timber ‘lift & lock’ side-rails and beech finish head and foot
boards. Each caster has a simple, individually foot operated brake.
Nexus brand accessories are designed to work in harmony with the moving parts of our beds and,
in conforming to BS EN 60601-2-52 Safety Standard, reduce the risk of entrapment.

SECTION THREE: SETUP
Each bed carries a CE Mark label which identifies the bed’s model and its unique Serial Number.
Where advice or spare parts are required, it is essential to quote the Serial Number, as this
enables us to match parts and advice to your particular bed.
The identification label, similar to the one in the
picture, is located on the metalwork of the bed
–usually on the scissor-lift chassis, on one of
the caster mounting struts at the head-end
adjacent to the to the point where the mains
electrical power supply cable enters the chassis.
DISPLAY OF THE CE MARK LABEL IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT –IT MUST NOT BE REMOVED OR COVERED.

POSITIONING THE BED IN THE ROOM
The bed should be positioned with adequate space at the side allowing the user to enter and exit
from standing with the bed in its chair position.
PLEASE NOTE:
Make sure the bed is positioned with adequate space on the non-access side as the back/head
section of the mattress support travels beyond the outer edge of the bed during the turning cycle.
If the bed is positioned with the non-access side too close to a wall, the back rest may hit the wall
during the turn.
FITTING AND REMOVING THE HAND-RAILS
Rota-Pro comes with two removable hand-rails, which provide added support for the user when
transferring to or from the bed in its chair position (see below). One or both hand-rails can be fitted
into brackets fixed on either side of the mattress support. The rails are identical and can be fitted
on either side of the bed.
To fit each hand-rail:
1. Ensure that the longer end of the hand-rail is
pointing towards the foot end of the bed.
2. Ensure the open, heads of the set screws (which
secure the hand-rails in place) are showing,
enabling them to be tightened using an Allen key.
3. Ensure the set screws are unscrewed sufficiently so
that they do not protrude too far inwards, as this
may prevent the rail from sliding into position.
4. There are two spring-loaded pins which hold the
rail in position. These must be pulled, and slightly-
turned to prevent them dropping back into place.
5. Once the rail is located in the bracket the spring-
loaded pins should be half-turned in the opposite
direction, and then released so they click back into
place to secure the hand-rail in position. The set
screws should only be tightened once the spring-
loaded pins are fully located.

FITTING THE LIFTING POLE

The lifting pole can be fitted into the sockets on either the left- or
right-hand-side of the mattress support, at the head end. Rotate the
pole until the locator-pin slots securely into the corresponding
groove in the socket. This prevents the pole from rotating and holds
it centrally above the user, ensuring it is securely positioned for use.
Hang the grab handle over the end of the pole between the two
vertical pins and adjust the strap to the required length.
When not in use, the lifting pole can be lifted slightly to free the locator-pin, allowing it to be
rotated out of the way. It must NOT bear any weight when in this position.
PLEASE NOTE:
•The lifting pole has a safe working load of 75 kg, and is not designed to support the user’s full
bodyweight. It is also not suitable for therapeutic purposes.
•Please check the grab handle and strap for wear or damage regularly, and replace any worn or
damaged parts immediately.
FITTING THE MATTRESS
To fit the mattress:
1. On each side of the mattress, near the centre, there is a black
fabric retaining loop. The loops are used to hold the mattress in
position when the bed profiles or transitions to the chair
position. The loops should be hooked over the metal anchor
bars on the mattress support directly beneath them.
2. Two Velcro straps are attached to the foot end of the mattress
support; the straps are used to hold the end of the mattress in
position during use. The straps should be positioned at 45
degrees over the top of the corners of the mattress, passed
through the triangular section of the mattress retaining bars on
the mattress support, folded back and secured with the Velcro.
3. The straps should be tensioned to the point where the
mattress is firmly secured in place but avoiding puckering the
mattress or the cover.
4. Next the small foot block should be installed, looping the small
Velcro straps on the underside of the block around the
mattress support beneath.
5. When the fitted sheet with sewn-in pillow case set is used, the
outer edge of the covers for the mattress and the foot block
are elasticated around the edge to hold them in place. Two tie
straps –one across the middle and one at the head end of the
sheet –give added security. The head-end tie strap should be
passed through the loop at the top edge of the sheet, before
being tied across the back of the mattress with a bow.
PLEASE NOTE:
•The Mattress should be fitted with the mattress platform flat (i.e. not profiled/in chair position).
•The Rota-Pro® graphic screen-printed on the mattress cover should face upwards and the
rounded corners should be positioned at the head end of the bed. This is a non-turn mattress
and as such will only fit correctly one way round.

APPLYING AND RELEASING THE BRAKES

Each caster has its own individually-operated brake. To apply each brake, push the brake lever
down with your foot. To release the brake, use the top of your foot to lift the spring-loaded lever
back up.
PLEASE NOTE:
•For safety reasons, the
brake on each caster
must be applied when
the bed is in use. The

USING THE HAND CONTROL
Profiling/repositioning:
The illustrated diagram overleaf indicates which bed
function is controlled by each set of lift/lower buttons.
It is easiest when adjusting your profile position in the
bed to start when lying down with the mattress support
in the flat position. Make the first adjustment using the
‘Head Rest’ buttons at the top of the hand control, next
use the ‘Back Lift’ buttons, and continue working down
the button pairs in order.
Reverse the order when taking the mattress support
back to flat, starting with ‘Leg Lift’, then ‘Knee Break’,
and so on.
The ‘Height’ buttons raise and lower the bed.
PLEASE NOTE:
When profiling the mattress support:
•‘Lift’ = left: pressing buttons on the left-hand side of the hand control will lift a function.
•‘Lower’ = right: pressing buttons on the right-hand side of the hand control will lower a function.
Using the chair function:
Pressing and holding the ‘Stand-out’
button will raise the mattress support
and rotate it to the stand (chair)
position on the pre-set side of the bed.
This enables the occupant to transfer
from the bed, using the hand-rails
where required for additional support.
When entering the bed and in the
sitting position, pressing and holding
the ‘Stand-in’ button will rotate the
mattress support from the stand (chair)
position and transfer the occupant to a
lying position in the bed.
Safety cut-
out button
If the bed has wooden side-rails, it will not rotate to the chair position unless
both sets of side-rails are fully lowered. There is a safety cut-out button
(micro-switch) underneath each set of side-rails which must be compressed
by the lowered rails before the bed will rotate (see picture).
If the bed beeps when pressing either the ‘Stand-in’ or ‘Stand-out’ buttons
and does not move, please check that the side-rails are fully lowered and
resting directly on the buttons.
WARNING
PLEASE NOTE:
It is important that the bed is fully rotated in or out until rotation stops before making adjustments
with the top 4 pairs of buttons on the hand control, if the rotation cycle is not fully completed
safety features may prevent the other functions from operating until the cycle is completed.

RAISING AND LOWERING THE SIDE-RAILS
PLEASE NOTE:
•For occupant safety, always ‘lift and lock’ (raise) the side-rails at the head-end first, and always
lower the side-rails at the foot-end first.
•To avoid damage and occupant distress, NEVER let go of the rails and allow them to drop.
To raise the side-rails:
Hold the upper side-rail at the head-end and slide up the channel until the
locating pin engages with a click. Repeat at the foot-end.
To lower the side-rails:
Hold the upper side-rail at the foot-end and lift slightly to ‘unlock’ the
release button on the side of the foot board. Press and hold the release
button and gently lower the side-rails until they rest on the stop at the
bottom of the track. Repeat at the head-end.
WARNING
If the bed has timber side-rails, safety cut-out buttons situated on the
chassis prevent possible injury or damage if an attempt is made to rotate
the mattress support to the chair position while the side-rails are in the
raised position. Unless both sets of side-rails are fully lowered to depress
the cut-out buttons the bed will not rotate to chair position. If there is an
audible ‘beep’ and the bed will not move when pressing the Stand ‘In’ or
‘Out’ buttons on the hand control check that the side-rails are lowered and
resting on the buttons.

GUIDANCE ON SAFE WORKING LOADS
SECTION FIVE: MAINTENANCE & TECHNICAL INFORMATION
PLEASE NOTE:
The Safe Working Load (left) must not be confused
with the Maximum User Weight (right).
In common with other manufacturers, we quote a Safe Working Load (SWL) for each of our beds
(please see Technical Data section). When a bed is tested to derive the safe working load, a static
load is evenly distributed over the whole surface of the product. Remember that when a bed is in
use, the load is rarely static or evenly distributed. Should a visitor sit down heavily on one side of
the bed, the shock load at that point will be extreme, the load will be uneven and the total
combined weight may exceed the Safe Working Load of the bed.
The Safe Working Load must take account not only of the weight of the user, but also of the
mattress, bed linen, and other items loaded onto the bed (e.g. a pump for an air-driven mattress)
during daily use. It is also important to consider any likely future weight gain by the bed user.
Typically:
•A mattress might weight 20kg
•An air-driven system could weigh as much as 30kg
•Two pillows weigh approximately 3kg
•Bed linen can weigh roughly 12kg
PLEASE NOTE:
The total weight of such items, together
with anything else placed on the bed, PLUS
the weight of the user must NEVER exceed
the stated Safe Working Load for the bed.
NEITHER NEXUS DMS LTD, NOR ANY OF ITS EMPLOYEES, CAN ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY
ISSUES ARISING FROM OVERLOADING A BED. SHOULD DAMAGE RESULT FROM SUCH ACTIONS,
ANY REPAIRS NECESSARY WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.

MATTRESS INTEGRITY AND CARE
If a mattress cover is damaged, bodily (or other) fluids can pass through and contaminate the inner
core, creating the potential for cross-infection. This is usually known as strike-through.
It is therefore recommended that a frequent inspection of mattress covers is undertaken to inspect
for damage, such as holes, cuts or tears. The inner core of the mattress should also be inspected for
signs of staining or contamination which may not be evident from external inspection.
Covers with surface contamination can be decontaminated using a damp cloth with normal
household cleaners or warm soapy water. Do not use cleaning agents containing ammonia,
abrasives or strong solvents.
Should damage to the cover occur, it should be disposed of safely and replaced. The inner core of
foam mattresses cannot be de-contaminated and should be disposed of safely and replaced.
