AIM and MIA Modes
• M/A (manual priorit y): Autofocus can be instantly over-ridden by rotating
the l ens focus r ing
• AIM (A F priority) : As above, except that the focus ring must be rotated far -
ther be f ore autofocus is over-ridden. Choose th is opt i on to pl ace greater
dependence on autofocus
Autofocus with Manual Override
To use manual f ocus in autofocus mode·
ITJ Slide the lens focus - mode switch to AIM or MIA.
[I] Fo cus.
Whe n the camera is in autofocus mode, autofocus ca n be over-
ridden by
ro tating the lens focus ring whi le the sh utt er-re l ease
button is pressed halfway (or, if the camera is equipped with an
AF·ON button, while theAF- ON button is pressed) . To refocus using
autofocus,
press the shutter -re l ease button ha lfway or press the
AF
-ON button again
Before focusing, turn the camera on or resta rt the standby timer by pressing
t he sh utter-release button halfway. If the camera is off or the standby timer
has ex pired. focus cannot be ad j usted using the focus ring and rotating the
zoom ring will cause the subject to go ou t of focus. Choose longe r standby
times for optimal resul ts when using manua l focus
Users of 04-series, 03 - series, 081 0- ser i es, 0800-series, Of, 0700, 03()(}-series,
07200, 07100, 07{)()), or 05200 came r as sho uld note that if the standby
timer is allowed to exp ir e, the focus position wil l change when the time r is
restarted . Refocus before shooting . Longe r standby times are r ecommend -
ed in situations in which you may not re l ease the shutter i mmedia te ly after
focusing

Be f ore focusing, rota te the zoom ri ng to adjust the focal lengt h and frame
the photograph
• Depth of Field
Depth of field can be previewed using the camera's depth - of-field preview feature.
•Aperture
Aperture is adjusted using camera controls . The fr ame rate may drop at some
apertures.
• Built-in Flash Units
o When using the built-in flash on came r as equipped with a bu il t- in flash
u nit, remove the lens hood to prevent vignetting
• T he focal lengths at which built-i n flash units can be used vary with the
camera; see the camera manual. Peripheral i ll umina t ion may drop if built -
in flash u nits are used at shor te r focal lengt hs .
• Vibration Reduction (VR)
Vibra t ion reduc t ion (VR) red u ces blur caused by camera shake, a llowing
shutter speeds up to 4.5 stops slower th an wou ld otherwise be the case,
increas i ng the range of shutter spee ds availa b le. The effects ofVR on s hu tter
speed are meas u red in NORMA L mode according to Ca mera and I maging
P roducts A ssociation (CIPA) standards; FX - fo r ma t lenses are measured us-
ing FX - format dig i tal cameras, DX-formatlenses using OX-format cameras.
Zoom lenses are meas ur ed at maximum zoom
Using the Vibration Reduction Switch
• Select OFF to tu rn vibration reduction off.
•
Select NORMAL f~r enhanced vibration r~uction whe nph o-
tographing sta t ionary subJeCts. Vibrat1on reduc t iOn takes
effect when the shutter- r elease button is pressed ha l fway
• Select SPORT for photographing athletes and other subjects that
are moving rapidly and unpred i ctably. Vibration reduction tak es
effectwhentheshutter-releasebuttonispressedhalfway .
Using Vib ra tion Reduction: Notes
· When using vib r ation reduction, press t he shutter-release bu t ton halfway
and wait for the image in the viewfinder to stabilize before press i ng the
shutte r- release bu tt on t he rest of the way down
· Wh en vibrat i on reduction is active, the image int he viewfinder may jiggle
after the shuner is released Th is does n ot i ndicate a malfunction
· SPORT is recommended for pann i ng shots, although NORMAL is also supported.
· In NORMAL and SPOR T modes, vibrat i on reduction applies only to motio n
tha t is not part of a pan (if the camera is panned h orizontal l y, for example,
vibrat i on reduction will be applied only to vert i ca l shake)
o Do no tt urn the camera off or remove the lens while vibrat i on reduction is
in effect. If power to the lens is cu t whi le vib r at i on reduction is on, the lens
may ratt le when shaken. This is not a malfunction, and ca n be correc t ed
by reattaching the l ens and turn i ng the camera on
• If the camera is eq uip ped with abuilt-in flash, vibration r eduction will be
disabled while the flash charges.
- Vibration reduction is generally recommended when the camera is
mounted on a tripod, although you may prefer tot urn itoff depending on
shooting conditions and the type of tripod.
• We recommend enabling vibration reduction when us i ng a monopod.
• The Lens Hood
The l ens hoods pr otect the lens and block stray lig ht that would othe r wise
cause fla re or ghosting

When attaching or remov i ng the hood, hold it near the r symbol on its base
and avoid gripp i ng it too tightly . Vigne tti ng may occur if the hood is not correctly
attached . The hood can be reversed and mounted on the lens when not in use.
• Lens Care
·
The l ens returns to maximum aperture when r emoved from t he camera.
To protect the interior oft he lens, store it out of direct sunlight or rep l ace
the lens caps
• Always support the lens whe n holding the camera. Failure to observe this
precaution could damage the lens mount
• Do not pick up or hold the lens or came ra using only the l ens hood.

Should the rubber lens-mount gasket be damaged, cease use i mmedi -
ately and take the lens to a Nikon - author i zed service center for repair.
- Removing dust is normally sufficient to clean the glass surfaces of the
lens
- To remove smudges and fingerpr i nts, apply a small amount of et h anol or
lens cleaner to a soft, clean cotton clo th or l ens-cleaning tissue and cl ean
from the center outwards using a circula r motion, tak ing care not to leave
smears or touch the glass with your fingers.
o Never use organic so l vents such as paint th i nner or benze neto cl ean the
lens
- The lens hood or Ne utral Color (N () fil t ers can be used to protect the front
lens element
• Attach the front and rear caps before placing the lens in i ts case
• If t he lens will not be used for an ex t ended period, store it in a cool, dry
location to prevent mold and rust. Do n ot sto rein direct s unl igh t orwith
naphtha or camphor moth balls.
• Keep the l ens dry. Rust i ng of the internal mecha ni sm can cause irrepa-
rable damage
• Leaving the lens in extreme lyh ot loca ti ons could damage or warp pa r ts
made from reinforced plastic
· Rapid changes in t emperature may cause damaging condensation inside
and outside the lens . Befo re taki ng the lens from a warm to a cold environ-
ment or vi ce versa ,pl ace it in i ts case or a plas t ic bag to sl ow the change
in temperature.
